One viral video shows what appears to be four sharks swimming in a Jamaican hotel's pool as floodwaters allegedly brought on by Hurricane Melissa swamp the area. Another purportedly depicts Jamaica's Kingston airport completely ravaged by the storm. But neither of these events happened; they're just AI-generated misinformation circulating on social media as the storm churned across the Caribbean several weeks ago. These videos and others have racked up millions of views on social media platforms, including X, TikTok, and Instagram. Some of the clips appear to be spliced together or based on footage of old disasters. Others appear to be created entirely by AI video generators. "I am in so many WhatsApp groups, and I see all of these videos coming. Many of them are fake," said Jamaica's Education Minister Dana Morris Dixon. "And so we urge you to please listen to the official channels." Although it's common for hoax photos, videos, and misinformation to surface during natural disasters, they're usually debunked quickly. But videos generated by new artificial intelligence tools have taken the problem to a new level by making it easy to create and spread realistic clips. In this case, the content has been showing up in social media feeds alongside genuine footage shot by local residents and news organizations, sowing confusion among social media users. Experts noted that Hurricane Melissa is the first big natural disaster since OpenAI launched the latest version of its video generation tool Sora last September. "Now, with the rise of easily accessible and powerful tools like Sora, it has become even easier for bad actors to create and distribute highly convincing synthetic videos," said Sofia Rubinson, a senior editor at NewsGuard, which analyzes online misinformation. AI expert Henry Ajder said most of the hurricane deepfakes he's seen aren't inherently political. He suspects it's "much closer to more traditional kind of click-based content, which is to try and get engagement, to try and get clicks." This article was provided by The Associated Press.

OpenAI's latest AI video generator Sora 2 has gotten a lot of attention for its realistic creations. The tool is supposed to have guardrails to prevent creating videos based on misinformation. But new analysis from watchdog group Newsguard found that, when prompted, Sora 2 often generated videos based on lies, such as false claims having to do with election fraud in a foreign country or that a toddler was detained by immigration agents.Marketplace's Nova Safo spoke with Sofia Rubinson, senior editor at Newsguard, to learn more.

You might mistake a recent video released by the Department of Homeland Security for an action movie trailer. It shows Border Patrol agents in military fatigues entering an apartment building in South Shore and arresting people alleged to be connected to Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang. Reporting from WBEZ, the Chicago Sun-Times and other outlets confirm that U.S. citizens were detained for hours, some of them in handcuffs and zip ties. None of that was shown. In the Loop talks to Jim Warren with NewsGuard and security affairs expert Robert Pape of UChicago about whether or not the federal government's videos of immigration raids – such as the one in South Shore – amount to propaganda about Chicago crime and immigrants. McKenzie Sadeghi, NewsGuard's Editor for AI and Foreign Influence, joins Megan Lynch and rates AI Chatbots on their news accuracy.
Ghost turns his focus to Jules Kroll, the man once dubbed the “CIA of Wall Street.” The episode traces Kroll's rise from cleaning up corporate graft in New York to building Kroll Associates, a private intelligence powerhouse that hired ex-CIA and FBI operatives and shaped global investigations. Ghost unpacks Kroll's ties to NewsGuard, its role in blacklisting independent media, and how its lead investor funnelled money into firms like Flashpoint that work with the FBI to target so-called “domestic extremists.” The discussion connects Kroll to Robert Maxwell, one of the last people to meet with him before his death, and to 9/11, where his firm ran World Trade Center security after the 1993 bombing. Ghost also highlights how Kroll's reach extended into Russian asset hunts under Yeltsin, kleptocrat cases from Marcos to Baby Doc, and the creation of a corporate intelligence industry built on secrets. With references to Trump's pause on FCPA enforcement, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and the blurred lines between private intelligence and government psyops, this chapter reveals how deeply Jules Kroll's shadow runs through finance, geopolitics, and narrative warfare.
A growing concern among digital commentators is whether artificial intelligence is irreversibly distorting the internet. Once a conspiracy, dead internet theory now reflects widespread anxiety about AI-generated content and its impact on online authenticity. AI-written articles, spam-like social posts and misinformation have contributed to fears that human-created content is being overwhelmed. Alex Hern, AI writer at The Economist, explains how user behaviour mimicking algorithms helped the idea take root, while Isis Blachez from NewsGuard outlines how Russian-linked sites are laundering propaganda to influence AI outputs. Mark Graham, Director of the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive, describes how the organisation is adapting its efforts to preserve online content in a post-AI era. Christiane Amanpour, CNN's Chief International Anchor, reflects on changes to the news industry since she began reporting during the first Gulf War. From accusations of “fake news” by political leaders to the challenges of reporting on the Gaza conflict amid restrictions on access, she describes unprecedented pressures on international journalism. Amanpour also discusses her new foreign affairs podcast co-hosted with her ex-husband and former US diplomat James Rubin, The Ex Files. Presenter: Ros Atkins Producer: Lucy Wai Assistant Producer: Martha Owen

Welcome to in Reality, the podcast about truth, disinformation and the media. I'm your host Eric Schurenberg, a long-time journalist and media executive, now the founder of the Alliance for Trust in Media. On previous episodes, we discussed how you can distinguish between reliable news online and unreliable, story by story. An obvious shortcut is simply to only read or view stories from places that you know to be reliable in advance. But these days, how do you know who is reliable? Today's guest is long-time journalist, prolific media entrepreneur and author, Steven Brill, whose six-year-old company, NewsGuard, helps readers and advertisers identify trustworthy newsrooms, based on the newsrooms' adherence to sound journalistic practices. In addition to starting media brands like American Lawyer and Brill's Content, Brill has written numerous books on American culture—but the one that relates the most to NewsGuard is his most recent, the Death of Truth. Eric gets Brill's insights about how social media swamped truth with the unwitting help of respected advertisers and well-intentioned legislators; they talk about his proposed solutions to this mess; and also why non-partisan NewsGuard has suddenly, alarmingly, found itself in the crosshairs of the new Trump administration. It's hard to believe that when President Obama was elected, we barely had social media. In less than two decades, giant tech companies have completely changed how we interact with one another–and in doing so have fundamentally changed our perceptions of reality. In his new book “The Death of Truth” bestselling author Steven Brill, cofounder and co-CEO of NewsGuard, examines how this happened and how to recover from it.
John is joined by Steven Brill — founder of The American Lawyer, Court TV, and NewsGuard, and author of the new book The Death Of Truth — for a deep dive into the morass of fake news online. Steve discusses how and why the major social media platforms have turned into toxic, conspiracy-theory-spreading cesspools, and what might be done to fix it. He also assesses the Supreme Court's landmark decision this week on presidential immunity, the debasement of the court by Justices Alito and Thomas (both of whom Brill first met as fellow students at Yale Law School), and how SCOTUS has lost much of its legitimacy with the public in the past two decades.
