This week, I'm joined by Pat Divilly, a breathwork facilitator and deep coach trained in body-based trauma release work - and with none other than Dr. Gabor Maté. Pat brings a grounded, powerful perspective on a topic many of us tend to avoid but absolutely need to explore - Shadow Work. In this transformative conversation, we explore: - The difference between your persona and your shadow - The benefits of doing shadow work and why it's so worth your time - How to begin practising shadow work in your own life - How to avoid getting lost in your shadows and instead use this work for healing and empowerment Pat also shares insights from his powerful book, “Shadow Work: A practical guide to embracing your shadow side, tackling shame and transforming pain into power.” This episode will open your eyes to what's really going on beneath the surface—and how that awareness can be the key to true transformation. Facing the parts of ourselves we avoid—our shame, fear, and self-doubt—can sometimes bring us out of darkness and into the light. Pat Divilly is a teacher, wellness coach, podcast host, breathwork facilitator, and the author of the national best-selling book Fit Mind. With over 15 years of experience in the wellness industry, Pat's journey began in the physical fitness space before evolving into a deep exploration of mental, emotional, and relational wellness.Driven by a passion for growth, healing, and connection, his mission is to create a more authentic and connected world—one where we all live with compassion, playfulness, and curiosity.Today, Pat leads transformative programs for men's health, offers corporate wellness workshops, and runs a six-month Breathwork Facilitator Training called Journey – The Breath. In today's conversation, we'll dive into one of the most essential aspects of his work: the shadow, in anticipation of the release of his upcoming book „Shadow Work“.In my own journey, I first encountered the concept of the shadow several years ago, a term popularized in Western culture by the renowned psychotherapist Carl Jung – and in our conversation today, Pat and I explore the origins of the shadow, how it's formed, and how we can bring awareness to it.We discuss:The unconscious behaviors and protective strategies we may be playing out, how to work with them, and how this awareness can transform how we relate to ourselves and others. How the shadow shows up in romantic relationshipsCommon emotions we often push into the shadow, such as shame, grief, and anger. We tackle the ever-present inner critic, which is so common for many men, and discuss how we can relate to it in a healthier way to live more freely and authentically. At the heart of this episode is the importance of shining light on the aspects of ourselves that are hidden and may be unconsciously dictating our lives—bringing them into awareness, and learning to be in right relationship with them.As I see it, this conversation serves as a masterclass on the shadow—understanding what it is, how we encounter it, and how we can integrate those disowned aspects of ourselves into our daily lives. This is a conversation you won't want to miss, and it's been an absolute pleasure for me to co-create with my new friend, Pat...—Connect with Pat DivillyWebsite: https://www.patdivilly.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/patdivillyRead Pat's Book "Fit Mind: 8 Weeks to Change Your Inner Soundtrack and Tune into Your Greatness": https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Mind-Change-Soundtrack-Greatness-ebook/dp/B09NFCM6BW?ref_=ast_author_dpPre-order Pat's upcoming Book "Shadow Work: A Practical Guide to Embracing your Shadow Side, Tackling Shame and Transforming Pain into Power: https://www.easons.com/shadow-work-pat-divilly-9781804581889?srsltid=AfmBOormQXHdyd4B31H3RnkQpYhIUJf197PmckeOViXSmU2-SWIWueiM&fbclid=PAY2xjawIWONFleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABpmTso9NEREyKF6j7LaX-OhGK2LsZHQnAw200GQzmc6dJ26rQW0-u9ME2KA_aem_hhbTp1_xARsLKz1fITOyHQ—Connect with Alex Lehmann:Website: https://www.alexlehmann.co/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexlehmann_Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@HeartofManPodcast/featuredListen to this conversation on Apple Podcasts and leave a review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heart-of-man/id1697289478Email: alexlehmanncoaching@gmail.comInterested in working with me 1:1? Pat Divilly has been involved in the wellness space for fifteen years, starting out in the fitness industry before moving into the areas of mental, emotional and relational wellness. At the core of his work I believe he teaches people on how to embrace who we are, all aspects of ourselves, the light the dark and really helps people digest complex frameworks into relative and practical tools that can manifest into our health and work performance. Today's conversation is with Pat Divilly, mentor, best selling author and podcast host. I was excited to have this discussion with Pat, who is someone I look up to and admire when it comes to emotional awareness and ability to articulate how and why he feels and thinks the way he does. This strikes me as a huge asset in the busy hectic lives we all lead in such a fast paced world. Pat shares with us much of his story, the big pivots and decisions he has made as well as the processes he has used to make these. Expect to learn about the 4 energies we can all manage, how to overcome overthinking, negative thoughts, recognise the shadow side of our personalities, and find more purpose in our lives. This is a deep conversation with lots of introspection and analysis, but also a number of actionable exercises we can employ ourselves to develop our own minds. Pat Divilly is one of Ireland's leading resilience and wellbeing coaches, a sought after corporate speaker and host of The Pat Divilly podcast. We've been friends for many years and for the last 5 have hosted the annual Momentum New Year kick off alongside Gerry Duffy. Pat runs meditation, journaling and personal development programs, retreats, mountain expeditions, and puts on hugely popular sell-out events in the personal development space. He's also in the process of finishing off his 4th book which will be published in December 2021, and we spend a bit of time getting into what it's about in our conversation today. There's so much I could have spoken to Pat about, but I decided to keep it fairly broad and talk about the subject of personal development. When we've realised that it's possible to work on ourselves, the next obvious question is 'how?' We explore this question and Pat being the natural teacher that he is, shares some real gems of wisdom right from the start of this podcast. I highly recommend checking out Pat's website https://www.patdivilly.com, and subscribing to The Pat Divilly Podcast for a weekly dose of inspiration! I hope that today's episode gives you a bit of a boost!
