"I'd love to wake up in the morning and not think about it" In September 1961, over 150 Irish soldiers serving with the United Nations in the Congo were besieged by mercenaries while stationed in the town of Jadotville. Over the course of five days, the 'A' company survived ground and air attacks with little food, little water and ever depleting ammunition. After being forced to surrender, they were taken as prisoners of war for several weeks before being returned to camp where they continued their duties before returning to Ireland. Upon their return home, the Jadotville soldiers were dismissed as cowards and to date, have yet to receive Military Medals of Gallantry as recommended by their commander Pat Quinlan. The story was told in the 2016 Netflix film 'The Siege of Jadotville' which starred Jamie Dornan and reignited the push for recognition for the soldiers. In 2000, an oral history project was undertaken by Irish Life and Lore www.irishlifeandlore.com on the Battle of Jadotville.  Some of the survivors of the battle were recorded for the project.  Between 1960 and 1964 the Irish Army forces were involved in a peacekeeping mission with the UN in the Congo.   On 13th September 1961, A Company 35th Platoon, numbering 152 men under the command of Kerryman, Comdt. Pat Quinlan, fought in a fierce battle which lasted 6 days and nights against the Katanganese Gendarmerie forces numbering between 2/3,000 troops.  Remarkably, no Irish soldier was killed. This podcast examines stage by stage the events as they unfolded, leading to a truce and a subsequent surrender.

John Dorney interviews Declan Power, whose book on the siege was recently adapted for the screen in a Netflix movie. The engagement took place during the United Nations intervention in the Katanga conflict in Congo-Léopoldville, in Central Africa. "A" Company, 35th Battalion (UN service) of the Irish Army ONUC contingent was attacked by Katanga Gendarmerie troops loyal to the Katangese Prime Minister Moise Tshombe. The lightly armed Irish soldiers, besieged in Jadotville (modern Likasi), resisted Katangese assaults for six days as a relief force of Irish and Swedish troops unsuccessfully attempted to reach the Irish.
