Defiance is often thought as a negative trait, but as our guest on this podcast explains, it can actually be a positive force both in the workplace and in our lives generally. Dr. Sunita Sah, a professor at Cornell and an organizational psychologist, is the author of “Defy: The Power of No in a World that Demands Yes,” published earlier this year.Sah's book explores why people say yes and go along at work and in other relationships in their lives, even when they want to say no. In this conversation, she explains how most people are conditioned to see defiance as a negative trait. Instead, she argues, defiance based on deeply held values can be a positive. She discusses how to evaluate a situation where you may want to defy, how we need to train ourselves to see defiance in a different light and why it is so difficult to make that transition. Sah also addressed defiance in the legislative workplace and the complications that can arise in a complex hierarchy. Sah also explained that while defying is not risk free, going along when you know you should object carries its own hazards.Sah will conduct a webinar on May 5 at noon MT as part of this year's NCSL Legislative Staff Week. What if defiance wasn't about rebellion—but about staying true to yourself when the pressure to comply is real?In this episode, Dr. Sunita Sah challenges everything we've been taught about obedience and reframes defiance as a skill—one we can practice, refine, and use to show up with integrity. This conversation will shift how you think about discomfort, doubt, and that gut feeling you've been trained to ignore.Because sometimes the boldest move isn't saying yes—it's knowing when (and how) to say no.Thrive Global Article:Sunita Sah Is Redefining Defiance—and It's aSkill We All NeedAbout Our Guest:Dr. Sunita Sah investigates what makes us comply.

Mâlik (r.a.), Resûlullâh (s.a.v.)'in: “Allâh Teâlâ arz ve semâlara konuşma izni verse onlar Ramazân orucunu tutanları elbette cennetle müjdelerlerdi.” buyurduğunu rivâyet etmiştir. (Sahîh-i Müslim) İbn-i Mâce (r.âleyh) Ebû Umâme (r.a.)'den rivâyet ettiği bir hadîs-i şerîfte Resûlullâh (s.a.v.) Hazretleri: “Bayram gecelerini ibâdetle geçiren kimsenin kalbi, kalblerin öldüğü günde ölmez.” buyurmuşlardır. (el-Heytemî) (M. Zihni Efendi, Ni'met-i İslâm,s.510)
Sahîh-i Buhârî'de, Ebû Hüreyre'nin (r.a.) bildirdiği hadîs-i şerîf de Nebî (s.a.v.) buyurdu: “Kadir gecesini, inanarak ve sevâbını bekliyerek ihya edenin geçmiş bütün günâhlarını Allâhü Te'âlâ mağfiret eder.” Ebî Kâ'b buyurdu ki, Kur'ân-ı Kerîm'i Muhammed (s.a.v.)'e gönderen Allâhü Te'âlâ'ya yemîn ederim ki, Kadir gecesi, Ramazan-ı Şerîf'in yirmiyedinci gecesidir. Yemininde istisna eylemedi. Nereden biliyorsun? dediler. Resûlullâh (s.a.v.)'in haber verdiği alâmetlerden deyip: “O gecenin sabahı, güneş, tas gibi görünür, parlamaz” buyurdu. Kadir gecesi, Ramazan-ı Şerîf'in yirmiyedinci gecesidir. Nebî (s.a.v.) bu gece şöyle duâ edilmesini tavsiye etmişlerdir: “Allâhümme inneke afüvvün tühıbbül afve fa'füannî” (Allâh'ım! Sen afvedersin; afvetmeyi seversin günahlarımı affet!) diye duâ et.” Kadir gecesinin günü de, fazîlette gecesi gibidir. (Muhammed Rebhâmî, Riyâdün Nâsihîn,s.211-213)
What if the greatest act of courage in our modern world that demands ‘yes' is simply learning how to say ‘no'?In this episode, Niall sits down with Dr. Sunita Sah, an organizational psychologist, former physician, and author of Defy, whose groundbreaking research explores the psychology of compliance, ethical resistance, and decision-making under pressure. Together, they dive into the forces that shape our willingness to conform, from the Milgram Experiment to the silent pressures in society. They discuss why saying ‘no' is one of the most powerful skills we can develop, how cultural and social conditioning make defiance so difficult, and why compliance is fueling the erosion of democracy and our response to global crises. Most importantly, Dr. Sah shares practical strategies to break free from the invisible chains of expectation and reclaim our ability to stand up for what's right. For more mindfulness content check out Niall's Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/niallbreslinFollow Niall on IG @bressie, TikTok @niallbreslin, FB @whereismymindpodcast and Twitter @nbrez and visit his website: www.niallbreslin.com.If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally or feeling hopeless, it's important to talk to someone about it now. How do you stay true to your values when the world pushes you to conform? Sharon McMahon is joined by award-winning Cornell professor Dr. Sunita Sah to talk about her new book, “DEFY: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes.” Dr. Sah breaks down why we feel pressured to comply—and says real defiance isn't about rebellion, but about standing up for what you believe, even when it's uncomfortable. After listening to this discussion, even the most obedient people pleasers will be able to say no. Bu mektûb, şeyh Behâeddîn-i Serhendîye yazılmışdır. Hz. Ali ra.
Whether it's declining an invitation, disagreeing with a boss or questioning a doctor, why is it so hard for us to say “no?” In her new book, Cornell organizational psychologist Dr. Sunita Sah draws on behavioral science to look at the pressure we feel to comply and explains why acts of defiance should be seen as expressions of our values. Sah's new book is “Defy: The Power of No In A World That Demands Yes.” When do you struggle to say no? http://www.sunitasah.com Guests: Dr. Sunita Sah, author, physician-turned-organizational psychologist, Cornell University; Her new book is ‘Defy: The Power of No In A World That Demands Yes'.
#574: What would you do if someone in authority told you to do something that felt wrong? Most of us like to think we'd speak up, push back, stand our ground. But research tells a very different story. In fact, when Yale researchers conducted a famous experiment in the 1960s, they found that 65% of people would administer what they believed to be deadly electric shocks to another human being... simply because someone in a lab coat told them to. Today's guest has spent over 15 years studying why humans comply with authority - even when every fiber of our being is screaming that we shouldn't. And when it comes to our money, this tendency to comply with authority figures - from financial advisors to real estate agents to car salespeople - can cost us dearly. Dr. Sunita Sah began her career as a physician in the UK's National Health Service. During one particularly exhausting period as a junior doctor, she agreed to meet with a financial advisor who had contacted her at work. That meeting sparked questions that would shape the rest of her career: Why did she feel pressured to trust this advisor, even after learning he had a conflict of interest? Today, she's a tenured professor at Cornell University, where her groundbreaking research on compliance and influence has been featured in The New York Times and Scientific American. She's advised government agencies, served on the National Commission on Forensic Science, and helps leaders understand the psychology behind why we say "yes" when we really want to say "no." Whether you're meeting with a financial advisor, negotiating the price of a home, or discussing rates with a contractor, understanding the psychology of compliance could save you thousands of dollars - and help you make better financial decisions. Today's conversation isn't just about psychology - it's about protecting your wealth by learning when and how to say "no." Our families, schools, and workplaces often train us to comply: taking on additional work when asked, agreeing with the group's consensus, and going along to get along with our bosses and colleagues. So, even when we're told to "think different" and "embrace conflict," we often hold ourselves back. But when individuals learn to say no more often, it can have huge benefits for their careers and organizations, says Dr. Sunita Sah. A psychologist and professor at Cornell's SC Johnson College of Business, she shares a research-backed framework for evaluating whether to comply or defy at work and offers advice on how to do both more effectively. Sah is author of the book Defy: The Power of No In a World That Demands Yes.
In this episode, we explore the nature of taking a stand. Our guest, Dr. Sunita Sah (author of Defy), a professor at Cornell University and an organizational psychologist, joins us to delve deep into the concept of defiance. Dr. Sah proposes a new definition of defiance—acting in alignment with your true values when there is pressure to do otherwise. She reveals insights from her research that suggests most of us are conditioned from an early age to comply and how this conditioning affects our ability to act on our values. We also discuss the five stages of defiance that individuals go through as they act according to their principles. Dr. Sah emphasizes the importance of explicitly knowing and writing down our values to ensure that our actions align with them. Key Learnings:Defiance Redefined: Defiance is not about rebellion but about acting in alignment with your true values, despite external pressures.Conditioned Compliance: From a young age, we are conditioned to comply and this affects our ability to act in alignment with our values.Insinuation Anxiety: We often hesitate to speak up or correct others because we fear insinuating that they are wrong or unethical.Stages of Defiance: The five stages—tension, acknowledgment, escalation, threat of non-compliance, and act of defiance—help us understand the process of standing up to pressure.Value Clarity: Knowing and explicitly writing down our values can help reduce stress and align our actions with our principles.Get full interviews, daily episodes, and more at DailyCreative.app.Mentioned in this episode:NEW BOOK! From our choices to our looks, biology to identity, marriage to motherhood, careers to caregiving—women are often handed two options: defy or conform. But what if defying expectations isn't about rebellion for rebellion's sake? What if it's about trusting yourself enough to say no when the world demands yes? In this episode of This Is Woman's Work, we're talking about how to defy expectations with the brilliant Dr. Sunita Sah. Dr. Sah is an award-winning professor at Cornell University, an expert in organizational psychology, and a leading researcher on influence, authority, compliance, and defiance. Her new book, DEFY: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes, is a rallying cry for ending submissive behavior and living authentically. This conversation isn't about being difficult—it's about being true to yourself. Whether you're standing up to societal pressures, breaking free of outdated norms, or simply giving yourself permission to live authentically, this episode will inspire you to rewrite the rules and embrace the power of no. As women, we're often taught to conform, but Dr. Sah shows us why defying expectations isn't just an act of resistance—it's an act of self-preservation and growth.

On this episode of Health Gig, Doro and Tricia welcome Sah D'Simone, a trauma-informed spiritual teacher, to discuss grief through the story of his mother's end-of-life care. Sah explores the profound impact of facing mortality and embracing connection, highlighting how disconnection from our bodies and avoidance of death-related conversations lead to emotional isolation, with far-reaching consequences for individuals and society. By confronting our fear of death and prioritizing authentic, vulnerable relationships, we can live more fully, embracing all emotions—positive and negative. Sah also delves into the transformative power of vulnerability and unconditional love, noting that these qualities can significantly impact how we experience both life and death. Drawing on his own experiences and spiritual practices, he advocates for rituals of unburdening to help individuals resolve lingering emotional conflicts. He points to the widespread issue of loneliness, especially in the elderly, and highlights the distressing reality of many people dying alone or disconnected from their loved ones. Ultimately, Sah encourages a deeper connection to our bodies, our emotions, and each other, noting that how we live directly shapes how we die, and that genuine connection is essential for both living a meaningful life and facing death with grace.

November is kind of a sad month, isn't it? Yet--even as the days shorten and the temperatures drop--it doesn't have to be so melancholy. For ancient Celtic people and the Ireland of yore, the month of November is the start of the Celtic new year, which began on October 31st. The Celts called it Samhain (pronounced Sah-win). The Celtic day also began at sundown instead of at sunrise. So, Samhain commenced at twilight on October 31st. Picture it in your mind: as the last sun of the year slipped beneath the horizon, the old year was seen to die. At the same time, out of the darkness, a new year was born. Celts celebrated with feasting, dancing, fortune telling and divination by reading apple skins and hazelnuts (representing wisdom in Celtic culture). And of course, fires. Large bonfires sprung up everywhere only to be doused at midnight, plunging the Celtic world into darkness. The fires were then re-lit from a great ceremonial bonfire at Tlaghtgha in County Meath. The High King's fire at Tara was lit first and then, in a sort of domino effect, the blazes moved out across the country until every hearth glowed anew. These fires were lit for warmth and to ward off the evil spirits residing in the darkness. Perhaps they were also a beacon of hope in the pre-electricity darkness and a symbol of the eventual return of the light. Let's focus on this last bit. As we are plunged into the darkness of winter, we are also that much closer to spring. Out in nature, as you walk with me in Tuscany, the leaves are falling, the frost has arrived, and nature is preparing itself for the inevitable. For Celts, November's full moon was the Seed Fall Moon, honoring the moment in which seeds drifted from dying plants to the humid ground. The moment in which the earth received them and embraced them, keeping them safe until spring. So as you walk in nature with me today, take time to reflect on what should lie sallow, and what should burst forth with new life come spring. We live in an increasingly self-focused society, which only exacerbates the loneliness that plagues modern life. According to my guest Sah D'Simone, we are not meant to be alone; it is side by side with others where true wisdom flourishes. He's here to tell us why connection is a fundamental piece of a deep spiritual practice, and how to connect with others authentically. Sah D'Simone is a spiritual revolutionary, mystic, artist, award-winning filmmaker, and bestselling author. He is well-known for hosting the top-rated Spiritually Sassy Show podcast and creating the Somatic Activated Healing (SAH) Method™. His trauma-informed approach is informed by his grassroots work in orphanages, homeless shelters, and rehab centers in Indonesia, Nepal, India, and the US. Sah uses his method to support Cedars Sinai Hospital as a member of their Spiritual Care Chaplain intern team. In this interview, Sah draws on his insights and tools to introduce a new way to transform the way we relate to others by releasing an “us vs. them” mindset, cultivating radical compassion, and creatively transforming our struggles into opportunities for awakening. In this way, we can deepen our friendships, build community, and heal the world.

Evolutionary psychologist, Doug Lisle, PhD discusses listener questions with host, Nathan Gershfeld. In today's show, we discuss the following listener questions about evolutionary mismatch at work, academia, and retirement. 1. I was on straight energy conservation mode for years at work. Putting in minimum effort and getting poor performance reviews. I hated it but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to get my motivation on board. Then I listened to you for years and over time bits of the pieces of the puzzle started coming together. Ultimately, I realized what I really wanted was the feeling of being productively occupied. To feel productively occupied though my brain needed to feel that it was generating real value in the world and get feedback that the value generated was indeed “real”. That is all to say I could never put a finger on the impact of my efforts in my corporate job. Does this mean the corporate world just isn't for me? Or do I just need to zero in on what I directly impact in my current position and focus on that? Have you ever heard of people getting their mind/ motivation on board after 8 years of something? 2. I am a Master's student in Psychology based in Germany, and I am planning to write my thesis on the topic of evolutionary mismatch in the workplace. My aim is to measure this mismatch using a questionnaire and then correlate it with hypothesized outcomes such as job satisfaction and mental health. I believe there may be connections between mismatch and phenomena such as burnout, as well as job satisfaction. This could potentially explain why some individuals prefer to work in small startups despite the objective drawbacks. However, I am encountering resistance from my professors, as they argue that the concept of “mismatch” is subjective and cannot be empirically measured, given that we cannot accurately determine the working conditions during the hunter-gatherer era. As such, they suggest that my thesis could be dismissed as a “just-so” story. I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to address this issue in my thesis. 3. Can you discuss the lack of goals once one is an empty nester? I am 61 and have many hobbies, i have volunteered so much I am having trouble finding anything that I can get excited about. I was a SAH mom and no grandchildren yet but not really interested in the grandchildren daycare duties if and when they present themselves. Post pandemic everything has slowed way down and it feels like reinventing the wheel for the hundredth time. My husband is still working for about 1 more year but we don't have many common interests. I am coming off of 7 years of being the power of attorney and executor for my aunt who had dementia and passed then subsequently handling the estate with many beneficiaries who are not interested in any kind of support or help so thank goodness I am almost finished with those nearly full time complicated estate duties which utilized my skills well but was very stressful. Now I am just tired of all the working for free but advancing to nowhere. I am very self motivated but wow, the future looks very mundane. Can you suggest some action steps to get going again?
