Welcome to this Mad in America podcast. My name is Robert Whitaker, and I'm happy today to have the pleasure of speaking with Joanna Moncrieff. Dr. Moncrieff is a psychiatrist who works in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. She is a Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College, London. In 1990 she co-founded the Critical Psychiatry Network, which today has about 400 psychiatrist members, about two-thirds of whom are in the United Kingdom. From my perspective, the Critical Psychiatry Network has been at the forefront of making a broad critique of the disease model of care. Without this network, I don't think that critique would be anywhere near as prominent or as sophisticated as it is today. Dr. Moncrieff is a prolific researcher and writer. Her books include De-Medicalizing Misery, The Bitterest Pills: The Troubling Story of Antipsychotic Drugs, and The Myth of the Chemical Cure. Her latest book is titled Chemically Imbalanced: The Making and Unmaking of the Serotonin Myth. This book in many ways is a follow-up to her 2022 paper which looked at the serotonin story and concluded that there was no good evidence that a serotonergic deficiency was a primary cause of depression. Commercialized psychiatric and psychological knowledge encourages us to think of ourselves primarily as consumers and promotes a set of values that suggest some of us have minds or brains that should be ‘fixed' with particular products or services. These neoliberal values have led to a great deal of institutional corruption and also has been exported beyond the western world across the globe. Many researchers, clinicians and activists have rallied together to fight against medicalized global mental health initiatives which promote a narrow westernized notion of wellness and defined how treatment should look, often at the expense of local healing practices and without the participation of people with lived experience. GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Robert Whitaker is the author of five books, three of which delve into the history of psychiatry. In 2010, his work "Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness" received the U.S. Investigative Reporters and Editors book award for best investigative journalism. Before transitioning to writing books, he served as a science reporter at the Albany Times Union newspaper in New York for several years. Whitaker is also the founder of madinamerica.com, a website featuring research news and blogs contributed by an international group of writers focused on "rethinking psychiatry." GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Scott Schara, host of Deprogramming With Grace's Dad, realized he had been programmed to believe a litany of things that weren't true after the medical murder of his daughter Grace. Grace Schara, a beautiful 19 year old with Down syndrome died on October 13, 2021 in a hospital after being given a lethal combination of meds. On the final day of Grace's life, after the doctor proclaimed how well Grace was doing, he unilaterally labeled Grace as DNR before administering a combination of IV sedatives and narcotics over a short timeframe that no one could survive, especially if already in respiratory distress, as Grace was. After extensive research and an investigation into the hospital's COVID protocols and financial incentives, Scott Schara determined that the hospital had decided that Grace Schara was worth more dead than alive to them, noting that the hospital recorded COVID-19 pneumonia “as the second cause of death in order for the hospital to receive the killing bonus from the government.” The tragic experience opened Scott Schara's eyes to reality that so much of what we have been programmed to believe isn't so. His podcast is aimed at helping others deprogram themselves, by opening their eyes and hearts to the truth.
