South African company Aerobotics is using artificial intelligence (AI) to aid fruit and nut farmers in boosting their crop yields. Established nine years ago, Aerobotics is active in 18 countries, with the US being its biggest market. Their AI platform analyses over 1 million fruit images per month and has mapped over 600,000 acres of US farmland. CEO James Paterson, who grew up on a fruit farm, developed an interest in improving farming operations using data. The company's AI software analyses drone-captured images to detect individual fruits, predict crop yield and assist with planning, reducing time spent on tasks such as pest monitoring. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/message

TechCentral — In this episode of the podcast, Duncan McLeod interviews James Paterson, co-founder and CEO of Aerobotics, a Cape Town-based company that pairs drone and satellite imagery with artificial intelligence to help farmers improve their yields. Focused specifically on tree crops, Aerobotics can analyse individual trees, measure their health and whether anything is affecting them, advising farmers about potential problems and how to fix them. The business, which enjoys the backing of Nedbank, has plans to expand beyond South Africa and has already set up teams in the US states of Florida and California. In the podcast, Paterson explains how the company got its start, how the technology works and how it goes to market. Founded by Paterson and his business partner Benji Meltzer (who serves as chief technology officer), Aerobotics' software, Aeroview, allows tree-crop farmers to identify early-stage problems in their orchards. Used in conjunction with the Aerobotics’ Aeroview Scout App on their smartphone, farmers are able to locate problem areas on a tree-by-tree basis. Don't miss the interview.

My guest on the podcast is Tim Willis, CFO and Head of Growth at Aerobotics, an AI startup from South Africa. He’s charged with growing Aerobotics in non-core markets, as well as its global expansion efforts. He’s built his financial management expertise at both Deloitte and Uber, where he led its Analytics & Strategy Central Operations Team for the Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA). During this podcast interview we explore how technology can add significant value by augmenting farmers across the world to increase their yields, while becoming more efficient at the same time. We’ll also look into the wider value implications this can have across the supply chain, and how other, non-farming related industries, can be served uniquely as a by-product of the intelligence gained. Here are some of Tim’s quotes:Aerobotics effectively takes aerial images of mainly agricultural areas. We collect those images using drones and satellites and potentially even aeroplanes. Farmers have a real struggle in terms of managing their overall farm….…you're looking at farms that are hundreds of hectares big, and some farmers can't get through their entire farm in three days…If they don't have technology, they have to basically walk around or drive around their farm trying to identify areas that could be potentially mismanaged, and employ large scouting teams to work in their farm. With our technology, they're able to basically manage their farm from their office. If we look at the overall picture in the world, obviously food's going to be a scarce resource, and I don't think we're going to solve that by ourselves, but we're definitely going to be a player in the combination of solutions that solves that problem. By listening to this podcast you will learn three things:1) Why focusing on outcomes, not outputs is the secret to creating a sustainable business2) How focusing on just a thin slice of the market is key to dominate it profitably3) That less is always more – in other words you’ll always have 100 to 200 things you’d like or think you have to do with your software, but identifying the 10 that will truly move the needle is the most critical thing. In the tech industry there s always a "next big thing" on the horizon that s going to change everything. It happens so often there s a name for this syndrome. It s called "disruption." The next big disruption that everyone s talking about is driverless cars. While we don t know when a driverless car is actually going to pull up outside your house or whether anyone is going to have the courage to get in it the funny thing is that, thanks to a much quieter revolution, we already have pilotless planes. You probably won t be getting on a flight to New York on a pilotless plane any time soon, but Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAV s as they ve come to be known are hard at work on military and commercial flights. Here in Acadiana, DaCoda Bartles is at the forefront of the UAV industry. DaCoda s company, Aerobotics, is an aerial camera company. Aerobotics aircraft buzz around checking on everything from oil rigs in the gulf to wildlife in the swamp. There is one kind of car that will probably never be driverless. A race car. Motorsports wouldn t be quite the same if the driver was sitting at the side of the track, or even in another city, driving the car by remote control. Motorsports is one of the most popular, most costly, and most highly rewarded sports in the world because race car drivers are so highly skilled. And daring. Unlike most other sports, a race car driver s life is on the line every second. You can count the race car drivers in Acadiana on one hand. And you can count the female race car drivers on one finger. Her name is Sarah Montgomery. Sarah drives a Mazda MX5 Global Cup Car, and she s a race winning and award winning driver. On this edition of Out to Lunch, Aileen Bennett notes that DaCoda s aircraft hsa been unmanned by technology, but Sarah s race car has been unmanned by a woman.
