It has been far, far too long since we've heard from Alix Jules on this show. I can't think of a more perfect guest to help us better understand the mayhem happening around the country right now.

Once upon a time, we thought artificial intelligence would be less racist than people. After all, machines are objective, right? Then we started teaching them how to think and made some discoveries of our own. When racism permeates our society and our IT infrastructure, how do we teach machines to do better than we do? This week, we spoke with Alix Jules about the point where technology, cognitive sciences, and sociology collide. On this episode I speak with Alix Jules about his journey of faith and humanism. We also talk about the state of politics in America as secular humanists who care about marginalized groups. At one point in the conversation Alix said, "we have a crisis of compassion" in this country and what we need to realize is that "we're all in this together."Alix is a writer, activist, and social commentator who typically discusses race, religion, and politics in culture. He’s been featured in Ebony Magazine, Time Magazine Online, and is a contributor to various books and articles on science, tech, and the impact of religion in the African American community. His activism includes building bridges for humans through discourse, and finding literal safe spaces for Nonbelievers, LGBT Youth, and recovery programs for survivors of abuse. He’s an academic nomad whose graduate studies range from Computing and Data interpretation from Columbia University and Northwestern - to challenging the ideas of the mind with studies in Psychology at Harvard. He activism involves him with many different non profit organizations, including Black Non-Believers, Center for Inquiry’s African American for Humanism, and the American Humanists Association’s Black Humanists Alliance. You can find Alix on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/alix331) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/alix.jules).To become a member of Life After God and access to the Life After God Facebook Group, please visit the Patreon page (http://www.patreon.com/lifeaftergod) and subscribe at the Member ($5/mo) level.

NOTE: This episode was recorded several weeks ago. In that time, Tracey has left the atheist community, and did so in a podcast where she mentioned Marissa by name. For the record, that was not for anything involving the person Tracey spoke about in her goodbye episode, it was for being there as a friend. And this episode was commiseration in difficulties we've had in the community, not calling out any specific person. Just needed to put that out there on the record since so much has changed since this was recorded. -Rissy Support this show at patreon.com/incitingincidentpodcastTickets to the live show in Chicago with Jenica Crail, Alix Jules, Stephanie Zvan, and Mandisa Thomas are available : https://tickets.vendini.com/ticketLine/ITL/?t=tix&e=672ec4caf511a4f94698e972e6a0535a&vqitq=508db975-cfd5-443c-8d66-8cfee8d3802e&vqitp=bac90e49-9894-4c22-993b-ea988a9ccff3&vqitts=1521072769&vqitc=vendini&vqite=itl&vqitrt=Safetynet&vqith=f95f8a2c5d83793903e17975a916003b&theme=mobileThis week, Rissy sits down with Tracey of Godless Mama Speaks for a hard conversation about the atheist community and a lot of the rhetoric as well as the positive aspects. Alright that was shameless alliteration, I admit it. But the truth is that outrage brigade member Alix Jules is here to speak on a wide array of issues and I think you'll find him as informative and entertaining as always! Other issues we touched on were raising atheist children, protesting, police reform and the Stoneman Douglas students using their privilege for good. Alix Jules is an activist and writer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, serving as President of the Board of Directors of the Fellowship of Freethought Dallas, President of Black Non-Believers of Dallas, as well as a national speaker on issues of intersectionality between race, religion, and gender. In this discussion, Alix and I talk about “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander, which methodically lays out the case that the kind of sub-caste intended by the architects of Jim Crow laws in the American South (carrying on the legacy of African slavery throughout the Americas) can be found today in the racial biases employed by law enforcement, political leaders, and public policy that brought about the War on Drugs as a proxy to target and diminish the cultural power of Black Americans.
Back for another great conversation is Alix Jules! This was originally going to be a follow up commentary but in speaking with Alix, it became clear that having him on would make for a much better episode! We discuss a Coates critique Twitter thread that got a lot of traction with the anti-feminist, anti-BLM factions but that I find quite off-base. Leave Thomas a voicemail! Welcome back to The Triple Po! I have returned from The Native American Slaughter Day break with another spectacular episode. On the pre-ramble, I talk about the travesty that is the #TaxScamBill. It is probably one of the most blatant giveaways to the the wealthy and corporations in American history, and it was passed with no debate and not even completely written when it was passed. It still requires reconciliation with the House to hammer out the final bill, and Democrats may be able to soften the blow a tad, but for the most part the middle class and poor of this country are getting royally screwed. So if you voted for Republican, hey, fuck you! On the palaver, I speak worth activist, blogger, speaker, and Zen master Alix Jules. We talk about the unique challenges the South faces in implementing change in both politics and social justice. Joining me on the show is Alix Jules! Alix is a super fascinating guy, and we talked for several hours, half of which is captured in today's episode. We definitely did not have the time to get to everything, or even a significant portion, but don't worry! We are already booked for another interview. In this iteration, we discuss his background, some of his activism, and he lends his perspectives to many of the ongoing themes of SIO lately! The 2016 U.S. presidential election has turned into something that wasn't supposed to be able to happen anymore. We're supposed to be past this kind of open racism, yet here we are. So much for living in a “post-racial” America. Alix Jules is a secular activist, writer, and sometimes co-host on Dogma Debate. He's also on the advisory council of American Humanist Association's Black Humanist Alliance. This week, he joins us to talk about the politics of racial resentment. We'll talk about Alix's visit to a Trump rally, but acknowledge that racial resentment reaches far beyond one party or candidate. We'll also discuss Alix's experience trying to talk about racial issues within the secular movement. Please be aware that the final segment of the show contains mention of a racial slur.

In his presentation “Breaking the Taboo of Atheism in Black Communities,” Leo Igwe said that “If there are people who should be religious and theistic today, it is not black people.”Yet black people are reputed to be the most religious people on earth, and the social stigma for the black atheist can be significant and often severe. As skeptics, how do we approach the issue of color in relation to non-belief? Should we strive to be “colorblind,” ignoring labels like black, white, etc? Or should color be acknowledged, embraced and even celebrated by those who accept the evolutionary explanation of our origins (aka: we are all Africans)?Tonight features a panel of very special guests: Jamila Bey: Director of Commnications for the Secular Student Alliance, Alix Jules, President of Black Nonbelievers of Dallas, and Bridgette Gaudette, Executive Director of the Florida Humanist Association. The show will respectfully approach a subject that is controversial, even considered taboo, and will hopefully provide education and resources for atheists of all colors and cultures.LINKS:DFW Coalition of Reason: http://www.dfwcor.orgBlack Nonbelievers Inc: http://blacknonbelievers.wordpress.comThe Gospel of Doubt: http://gospelofdoubt.netSecular Student Alliance: http://www.secularstudents.orgFlorida Humanist Association: http://www.floridahumanist.org
