Your entire body is connected. The way each joint moves and how strong each is matters. One of the biggest mistakes I see people making as a physical therapist is only focusing on the painful joint. For example, when dealing with knee pain- most people only do localized exercises for the knee- ignoring the rest of the body. In order to be successful in pain relief, strength and mobility- you have to focus on the big picture. Think arthritis means the end of an active life? Think again! In this episode, Dr. Andrew Fix is joined by Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, a physical therapist specializing in osteoarthritis. Dr. Kuhn, founder of Keep the Adventure Alive, sheds light on common misconceptions about arthritis and shares valuable insights into its effective management. Dr. Kuhn's expertise in osteoarthritis stems from her observations in home care physical therapy, where she noticed a widespread belief that surgery was the only solution for arthritis. She emphasizes that arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis, is more than just joint pain and stiffness and that diagnosis should consider more than just x-rays or MRIs.  The episode explores the significant impact of language on the mindset and treatment outcomes for people with arthritis. Dr. Kuhn encourages individuals to seek out accurate information and take an active role in managing their condition. Dr. Fix and Dr. Kuhn delve into the importance of lifestyle factors in controlling arthritis. They discuss the effectiveness of targeted exercises, including single-leg strength and power training, and the benefits of varied exercise routines for the body's adaptation and health. The conversation also covers the roles of nutrition, sleep, and mindset in arthritis management. Dr. Kuhn advises focusing on whole, natural foods and limiting processed sugars, and highlights the importance of being well-informed about arthritis for making empowered health decisions. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to understand arthritis better and learn practical ways to manage and prevent the condition. It emphasizes a holistic approach, blending movement, nutrition, sleep, and a positive mindset, to not only manage arthritis but also promote overall health and well-being.   Quotes: • “You can absolutely prevent the progression of the condition, which is another myth that a lot of people don't understand. This idea of bone on bone is one of those things that can send people down a black hole of symptoms. And it can send people down a black hole of thoughts. Like, okay, it basically insinuates there's nothing you can do. And a lot of times, unfortunately, healthcare providers, healthcare professionals are further cementing this idea.” (12:18 | Dr. Alyssa Kuhn) • “Your body needs to move in different ways. You have to incorporate moving sideways, moving backwards, moving in different directions to challenge muscles differently. Your joints need support on all sides.” (34:05 | Dr. Alyssa Kuhn)  • “If you're not making progress with pain relief, it's looking at four basic things. There are more but these are probably four of the main ones. Food is one of them and what you're regularly eating. Movement is another and we've talked about that extensively. Sleep is the third one. And really just your overall mindset, we can kind of encompass that with the stress or anxiety that you're experiencing. It really just comes down to your thoughts and just your mental headspace.” (41:51 | Dr. Alyssa Kuhn) Links Connect with Dr. Alyssa Kuhn: Website: https://keeptheadventurealive.com/jumpstart  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adventurealive/  Movemate Award-Winning Active Standing Board https://www.letsmovemate.com/drandrewfix Exclusive Promo Code: DRA15       15% off the price!   Flux Footwear Coupon Code: drandrewfix https://flux.rfrl.co/2g988  10% off   HYDRAGUN

If you are feeling stuck or spinning your wheels without success with pain relief- I'm glad you're here. One of the biggest challenges I see in osteoarthritis care is actually understanding what causes your pain because this is the gateway to finding solutions. Pain can be triggered by inflammation but there are many things that contribute to inflammation. Instead of searching for the best supplements, trying every pain relief cream out there, and even trying every exercise program- it's so important to understand what is contributing to YOUR pain. This specific plan is mapped out inside the Arthritis Adventure Blueprint.//Adventuring with Osteoarthritis Resources:Kicking off your Own Arthritis Adventure:If you are ready to begin your own journey to overcoming osteoarthritis, you've come to the right place!Join my online course, The Arthritis Adventure Blueprint, which gives you a step by step plan on how to make your active lifestyle possible again without being limited by joint pain.Learn more by clicking hereI also offer one on one virtual and in person (in Utah) coaching services, schedule a free call with me to learn more by going here.Free Arthritis Resources:Where to Start: Knee Arthritis GuideWhere to Start: Hip Arthritis GuideFollow me on social media: > My website> Join my Private Facebook Group> Follow me on Instagram> Subscribe to my YouTube channel

When the body breaks down, many people turn to surgery searching for what they believe will be a permanent fix. Often, what the body really needs is the chance to heal through diet, lifestyle change, and therapy. Dr. Alyssa Kuhn is the founder of Keep the Adventure Alive based in Salt Lake City Utah. She's on a mission to educate people around the globe on osteoarthritis pain reduction and prevention through diet and movement. When Alyssa started working in an independent living facility, she was inspired by the residents who were very active. This affirmed that osteoarthritis didn't have to be a life of pain, isolation, and immobility. She saw this firsthand when her 50-year-old client living with debilitating osteoarthritis could finally do a stair jump after months of therapy. In this episode, Jen talks to Alyssa about osteoarthritis misinformation online and healing chronic pain through diet and therapy. Maybe some of the people around them, but what if we could pull this out and now start to educate the globe, educate so many more people.” ~ @kuhnalyssa_dpt [23:06] - “I do want to highlight the fact that the common denominator through all of this is consistency. And I know that you probably preach this too with food that you have to be consistent. You have to dedicate yourself to it. The problem is, I think a lot of people give up too early. And they give up right before this breakthrough. So we have to think of it in small wins.” ~  @kuhnalyssa_dpt Links  Alyssa Kuhn LinkedIn Alyssa Kuhn Twitter Alyssa Kuhn Instagram Keep the Adventure Alive Move Well Age Well Connect with our host Jen on Instagram Jen on Facebook Wake Up and Read the Labels! When's the last time you had an adventure?  When is the last time you did something challenging and exciting?  When is the last time that you went exploring?  When's the last time you took a risk, or did something bold?  Many of us lose our sense of adventure as we grow older.  Perhaps we have aches and pains that we didn't have as a younger person, which inhibits us from adventuring.  My guest today is fond of saying that adventure has no age limit and has dedicated her life to helping older men and women overcome aches and pains associated with arthritis, so they can live the adventurous lives of their dreams. My guest today is Dr. Alyssa Kuhn.  Alyssa is a physical therapist, author, arthritis specialist, and founder of Keep the Adventure Alive, where her mission is to educate people that adventure is still possible with arthritis and that surgery is not inevitable! She is revolutionizing the way people think and feel about osteoarthritis.  In this episode Alyssa discusses the different types of arthritis and their causes, as well as the “conventional wisdom” that suggests people with arthritis need to give up movement and resign themselves to a sedentary lifetime of managing pain through medication and potential surgeries.  Alyssa then shares how there is hope for arthritis sufferers, and that adventure is not only possible, but recommended. You can connect with Alyssa in the following ways:Instagram – @adventurealiveYouTube Chanel - www.youtube.com/alyssaadventurealiveBook - Move Well Age Well: How to Rock the Later Years with Fitness and MindsetFacebook Group - www.facebook.com/groups/adventurealiveWebsite – www.keeptheadventurealive.comEmail - alyssa@keeptheadventurealive.com
