Yogi Aaron's journey in the yoga world began in the mid-1990s, a time when the practice was gaining traction globally. Practicing alongside notable individuals like Wade Morrison and witnessing the rise of brands such as Lululemon, Yogi Aaron has seen the yoga community evolve over the years. He takes pride in Lululemon's international success, particularly given its Canadian roots. Born into a "hippy dippy" family, Aaron's early years were steeped in alternative spiritual practices, including time spent at a spiritual healing center in Vancouver. This background clashed with his Christian evangelical upbringing, creating an internal conflict that would later shape his approach to yoga and spirituality. Challenges and Transformations As Aaron aged, he noticed his body tightening and saw yoga as a solution for maintaining mobility. Initially, his practice focused on physical stretching and hardcore power yoga. However, a pivotal moment came when Wade Morrison commented that Aaron lacked true practice. This critique pushed Aaron to seek a deeper understanding and more profound guidance in yoga. Aaron's yoga practice not only improved his physical flexibility but also enhanced his mental focus, helping him manage his attention deficit disorder. His formative years at a boys' boarding school in Alberta, filled with outdoor activities, had taught him the importance of managing his energy effectively. Despite early improvements, Aaron faced worsening back problems due to incorrect adjustments and stretching practices in yoga. These injuries led him to delve deeper into yoga beyond physical postures, exploring its spiritual dimensions.  He studied with various influential yoga teachers, including Rod Stryker, Rajmani Tigunait, and Alan Finger, embracing the deeper, spiritual aspects of yoga. This journey took him beyond physical poses to a greater understanding of energy management and enlightenment. Innovations in Yoga Practice Aaron's commitment to yoga, despite significant injuries, led him to question traditional practices and seek new understanding. He discovered muscle activation techniques, which provided profound insights into biomechanics and muscle function. This newfound knowledge transformed his approach to yoga, shifting the focus from traditional stretching and alignment practices to proper body mechanics and muscle activation. Recognizing the need to challenge misconceptions in the yoga world, Aaron began to understand his body's pain and stiffness, particularly in his hamstrings. This exploration led him to integrate muscle activation techniques into yoga, aiming to replace traditional stretching with muscle activation.  Aaron discovered that muscle tightness, such as in the hamstrings, is a protective mechanism due to other muscles not contracting properly. True mobility and stability, he realized, come from muscles contracting and shortening correctly, not lengthening. To bring this biomechanical awareness into yoga, Aaron developed the A.Y.A.M.A. (Applied Yoga Anatomy and Muscle Activation) method. His teachings emphasize the importance of proper body mechanics and muscle activation for true mobility and stability. About Sherry Shaban: Montreal-based podcaster, YouTuber and fitness and life coach, Sherry Shaban, is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified Athletic Therapist, an Osteopath, and the Director of Fitness for Rock Thomas's M1 Mastermind. With over 20 years of experience in her specialty, Sherry has dedicated her life to helping thousands of people transform their Athletic identity to become who they are meant to be through a unique anti-diet, self loving, simple approach. Sherry believes that our physical body is the direct reflection of our internal environment and that transformation happens from the inside out. Sherry's passion of helping others through their own health & wellness transformation journey stems from her own trials and tribulations: at the tender age of 16, Sherry was hit by a car, and the outcome of that accident nearly left her paralyzed. She underwent her first back surgery one month before her 17th birthday.  The second surgery in 2012 came at a time when she was just opening her first CrossFit gym in Montreal.  She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where she discovered she was just 2 millimeters away from paralysis. Through private coaching, her signature online coaching programs, "Making Peace with Food" and "Advanced PowHer", her YouTube workouts and podcast, Sherry works with a diverse population of Athletes - from beginners to professionals athletes.  She believes that we all have an obstacle - whether it be a struggle with injury, weight, past traumas or limiting beliefs.  “Overcoming the obstacle first starts with changing our belief systems,” she says. “If we think we can't, then we will always be right.” Sherry has been featured on various podcast shows such as Stop Stretching with Yogi Aaron, Leader's Lab with Ken Eslick, The Wellness Hour with Dr Amy Novotny, and Mission Matters. What We Discuss In This Episode: Sherry shares her powerful journey where for the first few years of being a gym owner, she felt like a phony. She was frustrated with herself, disappointed and angry for being a “victim” of her circumstances, unable to demonstrate a single squat.  But her turning point towards recovery came from understanding that one of the central elements to transformation is to let go of debilitating and self-limiting thoughts, and to begin to rewrite a new story. Sherry has made it her life mission to help others do the same: releasing self-doubt, create a new belief system and athletic identity, and become the person they are always meant to be. Sherry refers to her clients as “Athletes,” helping them unplug from diet culture and exercise-punishment, and step into a new relationship with their body, mind and environment.  She helps her Athletes view food as fuel for performance, recovery and transformation and their training as a lifestyle ritual that becomes a basis of the Athletic mindset. We discuss “Fat Loss 101”, which is a big thing for women in perimenopause, even postmenopausal. Mindset definitely plays a role. Sherry loves this topic as she's often asked, “How do you eat? How do you count your calories? What are your macros? Or what are your what is your exercise?” Sherry is an intuitive eater, an intuitive mover, and an intuitive exerciser. When we're focused on diet, and especially if we're following an app or we're following a particular handout that our nutritionist gave us, we're bypassing the body's natural intuitive cues as to when we should eat, how much we should eat, and when we should stop eating. In North America and in Western societies where we have the most abundance of foods, and we have the most abundance and information -- and the most abundance of different types of diet, it's interesting that we're the ones struggling the most with disease. We're the ones who are struggling the most with overweight and with health. Why is that? Because we are so confused. Fat Loss 101 has to start with releasing diets because diets don't work. What does work, though, is starting to add habits that align with your lifestyle that you can find them sustainable over time. With a diet mentality, we usually have the mindset of, “Oh, I can't have cake this week, because I'm on a diet,” or  you go to a barbecue, and it's “I can't have that glass of wine, or I can't have a  second helping of food because I'm sticking to the macros on my app.” Whenever we say the word can't in our mind, what we're really saying is that we want it, but we're not allowing ourselves to have it.  So, ditch diets & start to incorporate habits that are sustainable. Sherry says one of the best habits, that is really the gift that keeps on giving, is walking. All you need is a pair of shoes, you go outside, you connect with nature, you disconnect with the electronics, everything else at home. And as you're walking as you're moving, it is such a low intensity movement, that it's not going to stress the joints, and it's going to just give you pleasure. We also talk about hormones – the two most important hormones relating to weight are insulin and cortisol. Sherry shares what they are, what they do, and the impact on our lives if they're out of balance. Also, when we're stressed, it's hard to fall asleep, or when we've watched a movie or watch news that's extremely disturbing, it starts to impact the rest of our day and gets in the way of our sleep. When we sacrifice our sleep, and we don't get proper rest and restful sleep, what ends up happening is we start to deeply even imbalanced the hormones and start on that vicious cycle of cravings and hunger. I love when new information comes in to challenge my teachings or the current narrative in my mind and Yogi Aaron is just that kind of guy. Aaron has spent 30 plus years studying the ancient teachings of yoga as well as modern and scientific practices that promote pain-free living on all levels of self — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Through this journey, Aaron has developed a new philosophy of practicing yoga called Applied Yoga Anatomy Muscle Activation. This practice teaches us to stop stretching, because stretching may be causing more problems than it is helping. So how do we integrate this new information, as a teacher and as a practitioner? That's where the real journey happens. How can you take potentially contradictory knowledge to what you have been taught and practicing, to see how, or if, you can integrate it into your practice? In todays exchange, Aaron talks to us about why stretching is bad for you and how we can shift the paradigm of stretching in yoga to focus more on the activation of the agonist or contracting muscle, rather than the lengthening of the antagonist or muscle that is being lengthened. For decades, we have been conditioned to take stretching as a critical part of yoga. But what if stretching is the main culprit to our pain? Do you ever notice that even when we've stretched the pain out as we are often told, it always seems to come back. And stretching is often recommended as a way to relieve muscle and joint tension. However, it might not be doing your body the justice it needs. Stretching has been shown to increase the risk of injuries, specifically those involving the hip or lower back. Today we are debunking that myth and learning that all that stretching is actually hurting us! After 20+ years of asking, seeking, exploring, studying, experimenting, Yogi Aaron can confidently say, he's found many answers, but more important than that, he discovered a simple and effective technique to alleviate pain! And how often have lazy hip flexor stretches every provided long-term relief? EXACTLY MY POINT! Tight hip flexors have been blamed for low back pain for far too long. "Stretch your psoas" they say. But it just doesn't work! Your back pain or sciatica continues! This is because stretching your hip flexors or psoas for low back pain is often a huge waste of time. A tight muscle is a weak muscle and many people do not strengthen their hip flexors at all. This leaves you stretching a weak muscle hoping it will change, but it never does and your pain persists. Strengthening your hips and improving your function will however change the tightness of your hips and possibly improve the way your low back or sciatica feels. So in this video I show you why "tight hip flexors" is a joke of a diagnosis, and what you can do instead to actually get results!

Episode 6 - “Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.”   As we discussed in previous episodes, stretching is actually hurting your body. By passively lengthening your muscles, you are breaking the connection the brain has to that muscle, disrupting the neuromuscular connection. When you think about it, stretching is the exact opposite of enhancing or improving muscle function.   In terms of yoga postures, there are three poses at the top of the list that you should never do. But there is one (probably your favorite one) that is literally ruining your body. Why? Because you are overstretching. And once again, overstretching can cause you serious problems in the long term.    In this episode of STOP Stretching! you will gain a deeper understanding of why stretching is not good for you, what happens if the muscle is overstretched, and what yoga postures you should avoid to keep your body healthy in the long term. You will understand the reason behind the destruction of these asanas and how to modify them for good. Does stretching have a time and place…yes, my argument is that as adults we should spend more time building the strength required to have full range of motion then if we do stretch we'll be set up for success.
