Stop stretching before your run. You're not preventing injuries; you're draining the very power and spring your muscles need to perform at their best.Ever feel like your pre-run routine might be working against you? For decades, we've been told that stretching is the golden rule before hitting the pavement. In this episode, I dig into the surprising science that flips that script on its head. You'll learn why that static stretching ritual could be sapping your power, discover what you should be doing instead to wake up your muscles and nervous system, and get a clear, simple plan to transform how you prepare your body to run faster and feel better from the very first step.Key TakeawaysDitch the static stretch before your run. It doesn't prevent injuries and it makes you weaker. Switch to a dynamic warmup instead.Flexibility and mobility are not the same. Flexibility is passive stretching; mobility is active, controlled movement. Runners need mobility.Stretch after your run, not before. Your muscles are warm then, which is the right time to gently work on long-term flexibility.Timestamps[00:22] What You'll Learn[01:08] What Is Flexibility vs Mobility[02:16] Why We Started Stretching Pre Runs?[03:17] What Should You Do Instead of Static Stretching?[04:45] Use This to Warm Up the Smart Way[05:33] What About Post-Run Stretching?[07:44] What the Science Says[08:39] Why Runners Need Stiffness, Not Looseness[10:25] Use This to Warm Up SmarterLinks & Learnings

In this session, we address one of the most persistent myths in back pain recovery: the idea that pulling your knees to your chest or performing 'child's pose' is beneficial for relief. For those suffering from a herniated disc or sciatica, the lumbar spine often loses its natural lordosis (curve) due to chronic sitting and poor posture. We discuss why adding more flexion through 'stretching' only aggravates the injury by compressing the anterior portion of the disc and driving the nucleus backwards. Instead, we explore the science of spinal remodeling and the concept of 'creep'—how consistent, long-duration extension (using specific orthotics or simpler towel decompression) can actually help restore the spine's natural structure over time.We also dive into a wide-ranging Q&A covering the practicalities of rehabilitation versus hobbies. A key distinction is made between Reformer Pilates—which is an excellent hobby but lacks the progressive load required for true spinal strengthening—and a structured rehab programme. We also tackle questions regarding spinal surgery, specifically why 'pre-hab' is essential even if you are scheduled for an operation, and how to navigate daily challenges like lifting toddlers or managing travel without triggering a flare-up.Finally, we clarify the confusion surrounding core engagement. Many patients are taught to flatten their back (pelvic tilt) to engage their core, which violates the neutral spine principle. We explain how to use forced exhalation breathing to create a natural corset of stability without compromising spinal alignment, allowing you to move safely and build resilience for the long term.

Stretching isn't the best for tight hamstrings...❌Instead, strengthening the hamstrings can be effective in reducing both pain and tightness! Stretching may actually increase irritation to the muscle. Specific strengthening exercises can make your hamstrings feel flexible and mobile again. One of the main reasons muscles become tight is due to weakness. Your body then turns to tightening the muscle to achieve stability. This is why hamstring strengthening can be incredibly effective. Join Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist as she takes you through 4 hamstring strengthening exercises to reduce tightness, pain and injury. Choose one of these or all of them to start focusing on. The key is making sure the exercises feel good. Yogi Aaron's journey in the yoga world began in the mid-1990s, a time when the practice was gaining traction globally. Practicing alongside notable individuals like Wade Morrison and witnessing the rise of brands such as Lululemon, Yogi Aaron has seen the yoga community evolve over the years. He takes pride in Lululemon's international success, particularly given its Canadian roots. Born into a "hippy dippy" family, Aaron's early years were steeped in alternative spiritual practices, including time spent at a spiritual healing center in Vancouver. This background clashed with his Christian evangelical upbringing, creating an internal conflict that would later shape his approach to yoga and spirituality. Challenges and Transformations As Aaron aged, he noticed his body tightening and saw yoga as a solution for maintaining mobility. Initially, his practice focused on physical stretching and hardcore power yoga. However, a pivotal moment came when Wade Morrison commented that Aaron lacked true practice. This critique pushed Aaron to seek a deeper understanding and more profound guidance in yoga. Aaron's yoga practice not only improved his physical flexibility but also enhanced his mental focus, helping him manage his attention deficit disorder. His formative years at a boys' boarding school in Alberta, filled with outdoor activities, had taught him the importance of managing his energy effectively. Despite early improvements, Aaron faced worsening back problems due to incorrect adjustments and stretching practices in yoga. These injuries led him to delve deeper into yoga beyond physical postures, exploring its spiritual dimensions. He studied with various influential yoga teachers, including Rod Stryker, Rajmani Tigunait, and Alan Finger, embracing the deeper, spiritual aspects of yoga. This journey took him beyond physical poses to a greater understanding of energy management and enlightenment. Innovations in Yoga Practice Aaron's commitment to yoga, despite significant injuries, led him to question traditional practices and seek new understanding. He discovered muscle activation techniques, which provided profound insights into biomechanics and muscle function. This newfound knowledge transformed his approach to yoga, shifting the focus from traditional stretching and alignment practices to proper body mechanics and muscle activation. Recognizing the need to challenge misconceptions in the yoga world, Aaron began to understand his body's pain and stiffness, particularly in his hamstrings. This exploration led him to integrate muscle activation techniques into yoga, aiming to replace traditional stretching with muscle activation. Aaron discovered that muscle tightness, such as in the hamstrings, is a protective mechanism due to other muscles not contracting properly. True mobility and stability, he realized, come from muscles contracting and shortening correctly, not lengthening. To bring this biomechanical awareness into yoga, Aaron developed the A.Y.A.M.A. (Applied Yoga Anatomy and Muscle Activation) method. His teachings emphasize the importance of proper body mechanics and muscle activation for true mobility and stability. Aaron's Blue Osa Yoga Retreat & Spa serves as a sanctuary for yoga teachers, individual retreat-goers, and hosts his yoga teacher training sessions. To distance his yoga retreat from his previous naked men's yoga group, he rebranded himself from Aaron Star to Yogi Aaron. He leverages online platforms like YouTube and the Yogi Club to provide content and courses on becoming pain-free. Commitment to a Pain-Free Life A key message in Aaron's teachings is the importance of finding a real teacher who challenges and inspires growth. Despite facing resistance and skepticism from the yoga community due to his unconventional views on stretching, Aaron remains steadfast in his mission. His book "Stop Stretching" and his teachings aim to help people live pain-free lives. For those interested in exploring Yogi Aaron's innovative approach to yoga and mobility, his website, yogiaaron.com, serves as a comprehensive hub. Here, visitors can access his book, podcast, and free resources, including a "7 Days to Becoming Pain-Free" series. Aaron's commitment is clear: to help anyone who comes into his space live their best pain-free life. In this podcast, you will learn about: The emphasis of Yogi Aaron's A.Y.A.M.A. method on muscle activation and proper body mechanics over traditional stretching. The integration of physical flexibility, mental focus, and spiritual understanding in Aaron's journey, enhancing overall well-being and managing attention deficit disorder. The impact of significant injuries on Aaron's shift to muscle activation techniques, transforming his approach to yoga and mobility. Aaron's use of YouTube and the Yogi Club to provide courses like "7 Days to Becoming Pain-Free," aimed at helping people live pain-free lives. The focus of Aaron's trainings and retreats on proper biomechanics and muscle activation for achieving true mobility. And much more. Stop stretching your tight muscles for low back pain or sciatica! . Do you really need to stretch tight muscles if you have back pain or sciatica? Unlock the secrets to a life without chronic pain as Yogi Aron takes us on a journey through his revolutionary yoga approach. Gone are the days when stretching was hailed as the ultimate solution to muscle tightness. Instead, prepare to embrace muscle activation and strength as your new allies in the quest for a stable, pain-free existence. With insights from his eye-opening book "Stop Stretching," Yogi Aron shares his transformation from a sprightly teen to battling back pain at 45, leading him to debunk long-held stretching myths and offer an alternative path to well-being. Transform how you think about flexibility and dive into the practical tools for maintaining an active, healthy body with the YAMA method. Discover why muscle tightness often cries out for stabilization rather than elongation and how isometric exercises—like the underestimated power of the bridge and Superman poses—can correct compensations and prevent the dreaded hunched back of later years. Yogi Aron demonstrates that dedicating mere minutes each day to these simple exercises is more effective in fortifying your posture than hours spent in the gym, promising a future where chronic pain is no longer your constant companion. ⠀

In this video, we dive into three effective exercises designed to provide relief without exacerbating nerve tension or disc pressure. Let's break down each exercise: Dead Bug Core Exercise: We explore the power of maintaining a neutral spine during core engagement. This not only strengthens your core but also avoids unnecessary strain on the sciatic nerve and discs, making it a safe and effective exercise. Nerve Flossing Technique: Discover how gentle nerve flossing, done with a neutral spine, can alleviate sciatica discomfort. This technique ensures you're not inadvertently aggravating the nerve during stretches. Lumbar Extension Exercise: Learn an extension exercise that reduces pressure on the discs and provides relief for the sciatic nerve. This targeted approach addresses the root source of sciatica pain. Incorporate these exercises into your routine for a step towards a pain-free life. As with any new exercise program, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. Subscribe for more insights into maintaining a healthy and pain-free lifestyle.
Are you stretching and stretching only to feel nothing or make your sciatica worse? This technique may not be what you need in your recovery. We interview Yogi Aaron, a yoga instructor and teacher of the Muscle Activation technique. We discuss why muscles may feel tight, and some action steps to reduce tightness and improve pain without stretching. About Sherry Shaban: Montreal-based podcaster, YouTuber and fitness and life coach, Sherry Shaban, is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified Athletic Therapist, an Osteopath, and the Director of Fitness for Rock Thomas's M1 Mastermind. With over 20 years of experience in her specialty, Sherry has dedicated her life to helping thousands of people transform their Athletic identity to become who they are meant to be through a unique anti-diet, self loving, simple approach. Sherry believes that our physical body is the direct reflection of our internal environment and that transformation happens from the inside out. Sherry's passion of helping others through their own health & wellness transformation journey stems from her own trials and tribulations: at the tender age of 16, Sherry was hit by a car, and the outcome of that accident nearly left her paralyzed. She underwent her first back surgery one month before her 17th birthday. The second surgery in 2012 came at a time when she was just opening her first CrossFit gym in Montreal. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where she discovered she was just 2 millimeters away from paralysis. Through private coaching, her signature online coaching programs, "Making Peace with Food" and "Advanced PowHer", her YouTube workouts and podcast, Sherry works with a diverse population of Athletes - from beginners to professionals athletes. She believes that we all have an obstacle - whether it be a struggle with injury, weight, past traumas or limiting beliefs. “Overcoming the obstacle first starts with changing our belief systems,” she says. “If we think we can't, then we will always be right.” Sherry has been featured on various podcast shows such as Stop Stretching with Yogi Aaron, Leader's Lab with Ken Eslick, The Wellness Hour with Dr Amy Novotny, and Mission Matters. What We Discuss In This Episode: Sherry shares her powerful journey where for the first few years of being a gym owner, she felt like a phony. She was frustrated with herself, disappointed and angry for being a “victim” of her circumstances, unable to demonstrate a single squat. But her turning point towards recovery came from understanding that one of the central elements to transformation is to let go of debilitating and self-limiting thoughts, and to begin to rewrite a new story. Sherry has made it her life mission to help others do the same: releasing self-doubt, create a new belief system and athletic identity, and become the person they are always meant to be. Sherry refers to her clients as “Athletes,” helping them unplug from diet culture and exercise-punishment, and step into a new relationship with their body, mind and environment. She helps her Athletes view food as fuel for performance, recovery and transformation and their training as a lifestyle ritual that becomes a basis of the Athletic mindset. We discuss “Fat Loss 101”, which is a big thing for women in perimenopause, even postmenopausal. Mindset definitely plays a role. Sherry loves this topic as she's often asked, “How do you eat? How do you count your calories? What are your macros? Or what are your what is your exercise?” Sherry is an intuitive eater, an intuitive mover, and an intuitive exerciser. When we're focused on diet, and especially if we're following an app or we're following a particular handout that our nutritionist gave us, we're bypassing the body's natural intuitive cues as to when we should eat, how much we should eat, and when we should stop eating. In North America and in Western societies where we have the most abundance of foods, and we have the most abundance and information -- and the most abundance of different types of diet, it's interesting that we're the ones struggling the most with disease. We're the ones who are struggling the most with overweight and with health. Why is that? Because we are so confused. Fat Loss 101 has to start with releasing diets because diets don't work. What does work, though, is starting to add habits that align with your lifestyle that you can find them sustainable over time. With a diet mentality, we usually have the mindset of, “Oh, I can't have cake this week, because I'm on a diet,” or you go to a barbecue, and it's “I can't have that glass of wine, or I can't have a second helping of food because I'm sticking to the macros on my app.” Whenever we say the word can't in our mind, what we're really saying is that we want it, but we're not allowing ourselves to have it. So, ditch diets & start to incorporate habits that are sustainable. Sherry says one of the best habits, that is really the gift that keeps on giving, is walking. All you need is a pair of shoes, you go outside, you connect with nature, you disconnect with the electronics, everything else at home. And as you're walking as you're moving, it is such a low intensity movement, that it's not going to stress the joints, and it's going to just give you pleasure. We also talk about hormones – the two most important hormones relating to weight are insulin and cortisol. Sherry shares what they are, what they do, and the impact on our lives if they're out of balance. Also, when we're stressed, it's hard to fall asleep, or when we've watched a movie or watch news that's extremely disturbing, it starts to impact the rest of our day and gets in the way of our sleep. When we sacrifice our sleep, and we don't get proper rest and restful sleep, what ends up happening is we start to deeply even imbalanced the hormones and start on that vicious cycle of cravings and hunger. We touched on intermittent fasting – a huge topic in the health and wellness space right now -- and how we can receive benefits from intermittent fasting in as little as 12 hours. “The sky's the limit. Yogi Aaron is the co-Owner of Blue Osa Yoga Retreat & Spa in Costa Rica and is trailblazing a new path in the world of yoga by flipping the script. His teachings aim to help as many people as possible live a pain-free life so they can realize yoga's true intentions. He is the creator of the revolutionary approach to yoga — Applied Yoga Anatomy + Muscle Activation™ (AYAMA) and the online platform: The Yogi Club, host of the yoga podcast ‘Stop Stretching', author of ‘Autobiography of a Naked Yogi' and the forth-coming book ‘Stop Stretching! A New Yogic Approach To Master Your Body + Live Pain-Free'.Highlights:1. Stress, trauma and overuse are major contributors to pain2. A deep understanding of anatomy and muscle function results in being wary of stretching with the goal of being flexible 3. Pain can be exacerbated by stretching; stop stretching and use muscle activation instead (see the link below)4. Stretching lowers the proprioception between the brain and the muscle; AYAMA does the opposite5. Yoga is THE answer to so many human problems as it trains us that all the answers that we need are already within us6. The premise of yoga is twofold: 1) We all have a life purpose and 2) we often struggle living out this purpose because we get in our own way7. We are geniuses at creating our own suffering; yoga can relieve us from this suffering by awakening our potential and revealing our brilliance8. The practice of yoga doesn't have to require a lot of time; it can occur in a pause, a breath9. A key teaching in yoga is about stability – without mental stability, you can't focus your energy on your goals10. Stop Stretching! When we are in pain, we can't do anything in our lives. When we feel instability in our bodies, that instability ravages the mind. We can't focus on anything else because all we can think about is how to get rid of this pain. Our body is the vehicle that we live in throughout our life. If you wear out your body, where are you going to live? So where do we go from here? The last episode of STOP Stretching is about YOU - you will hear some AMAZING testimonials from students who have trained in AYAMA with me. They are regular people who are just like YOU. They love Yoga and had originally understood yoga to be all about flexibility and stretching. After spending some time learning with me and experiencing the profound effects of AYAMA on the body, their understanding of yoga, and safe movement has completely transformed! I will share some deeper insight into how AYAMA fits perfectly with the yoga paradigm, and if you practice yoga correctly, what you can possibly achieve. We will also wrap up the contents you have been learning over the past episodes and help you how you should practice yoga.
