Why is there such a disconnect between who we want to be and what we actually do? In this second of two conversations with Ger Jones of Vintage Church LA, John Mark and Ger discuss the practice of contemplation. John Mark argues that we overestimate the ability of willpower and insight to change us. Instead, he offers us three doorways into the practice of contemplation and practical suggestions for integrating this practice in our lives. You can read more in the expanded hardcover edition of John Mark's book God Has a Name, now available wherever books are sold.Key Scripture Passage: 2 Corinthians 3v18This podcast and its episodes are paid for by The Circle, our community of monthly givers. Here's the episode that was never supposed to happen: It Takes Two (1995). A departure from our Dualstar Entertainment Produced-Journey, this film starring the Olsen Twins is a throwback for the ages. Adri is joined by our White Man from our White Man's Corner, Seth to talk about the shenanigans two identical strangers get up to when their world is threatened by adoption to what amounts to be a workhouse (Amanda) and an evil stepmother (Allysa). They get into some prince and the pauper-like scenarios. Like in Billboard Dad (1998), the girls hatch a matchmaking plan that they hope will solve all their dilemmas. The lucky pair? Roger Callaway (Steve Guttenberg), a communications billionaire father to Allysa, and Diane (Kristie Alley, RIP), Amanda's case worker at the orphanage. Did this 1995 movie manage to charm us? Chronic illness can make your life feel filled with insurmountable obstacles. Pursuing your dreams, even in the face of health issues, may feel hopeless. But moving forward, even in small increments, you can accomplish great things. Just ask gold medalist Allysa Seely. Allysa grew up as a dancer and competitive athlete before health issues tried to sideline her. She spent three years advocating for herself as a teen and young adult, fighting to be listened to, before finally being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Chiari Malformation, Basilar Invagination, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and more. Allysa refused to let her diagnoses define her, and has become a two-time gold-medal winning paratriathlete at the 2016 and 2020 Paralympics. She shares how she's been able to compete at such a high level with multiple chronic illnesses, and opens up about her hard journey in college to get a diagnosis. Allysa confides that she used all her “you can't”s as fuel to move her forward in pursuit of her dream. She discusses her difficult decision about her amputation, and shares her tips for getting through hard days. Allysa's story, and how she turned challenge into triumph in her life, is inspiring and encouraging for everyone living with chronic illness. As Allysa shows, there really are no limits. She learned about triathlon and signed up for her first race a few weeks later. Seely was a member of the Arizona State University collegiate club triathlon team and a nationally ranked triathlete before her diagnosis. In 2010, Seely was diagnosed with Chiari II Malformation, basilar invagination, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which affect her brain, spine, and connective tissues. After her first surgery, she was back to competing seven weeks later at the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships with ASU. She made her debut as an elite paratriathlete in 2012, earning bronze at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships that year. Then in 2013, Seely had her left leg amputated below the knee due to complications and increased spasticity in her foot. That would move her into a new paratriathlon category — but she continued to thrive, winning five gold medals on the elite ITU circuit in 2014. She earned her first two world championship titles in 2015 and 2016. At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Seely made history by winning a gold medal in paratriathlon's debut as a Paralympic medal event. She also competed in track & field at the Rio Games, placing sixth in the 200m. That same year, she was a featured athlete in ESPN the Magazine's Body Issue. Seely has been dominant in the women's PTS2 division since Rio, earning silver at the 2017 World Championships and winning her third career world title in 2018 after an undefeated 2018 elite season. In July of 2019, Seely won an ESPY for Best Female Athlete with a Disability. She faced significant health challenges in late 2020 and early 2021, spending several months in the hospital with endocarditis, severe inflammation of the heart. She returned to full-time training in the spring, regaining her fitness in time to earn a silver medal at the Americas Triathlon Para Championships June 27 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, a key selection event for the Tokyo Games. She says her biggest inspiration in life is her grandma for pushing her to be a better athlete and human and to make the world around her better. She also credits her service dog Mowgli as being a great training and life partner. When she travels for competitions, Seely collects postcards and mini silver spoons from each location. Her favorite spoon is a hand-painted ceramic spoon from Estonia, and some of her favorite places that she has traveled to are Northern Ireland and Poland. She says her name is spelled “Allysa” because of a misspelling on her birth certificate, and of her biggest talents outside of triathlon is creating DIY projects. Welcome to the start of Paralympics month on the Triathlete Hour. The Paralympic Games start next week and after all the excitement in Tokyo we're ready to keep it going. Allysa Seely kicks things off today with her fascinating and inspiring story. After getting into triathlon while in college, she started experiencing symptoms that didn't make sense: extreme fatigue, passing out when standing up, an inability to walk. It took two years to finally get a diagnosis. And after surgery, she went back to Collegiate Club Nationals and became the first athlete with a disability to compete in the able-bodied race. Allysa talks to us about the challenges of invisible v. visible disabilities, how her amputation was a good thing, how she won gold in Rio at the debut of paratriathlon in the Games, and what the media frenzy was like after. Last year, months of life-threatening infections in her bloodstream again left doctors stumped and had her in and out of the hospital. Now, she's been panic training for Tokyo, but don't bet against her. More: A Day in the Life of Paralympic Triathlete Allysa Seely

Joining Laura on today’s episode is the incredibly inspiring American Paralympic champion, Allysa Seely. Diagnosed with a combination of brain, spinal and connectivity disorders which eventually led to the amputation of her left leg below the knee, Allysa responded by going on to become a 3-time World Champion and a Paralympic Gold Medalist. Despite the challenges presented by her ongoing medical concerns, Allysa continues to persevere, and is currently training with an eye to competing in the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2021. She also discusses the importance of her team, her unique nutrition necessities, her ESPN Body Issue experience, and how she is feeling these days since a recent stint in the hospital. Make no mistake, Allysa’s story is not solely about her diagnosis and the impact it has had upon her life. It is about having the steely resolve to recognize challenges, meet them head on, and go beyond simply overcoming them to actually using them as fuel to achieve even greater results, rendering Allysa Seely a truly inspiring example for everyone to follow not only in sport but in every aspect of life. Hopefully, next year’s going to be way better.” “We can’t change the cards we’re dealt, and so we just have to make the best of what we have…those who are able to cope with the changes and stay on track and stay motivated are the ones that are going to find the most success next summer.” “Although these few months have been hard, I don’t think it counts me out. With all triathlon racing in Canada cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Canadian PTO Professionals have joined together to create an event that will allow Canadian professional triathletes to engage in a non-drafting Olympic distance event and celebrate the resilience of the Canadian triathlon community. The swim will be a time trial done separately from the bike and run, then the athletes will start the bike/run in order of their swim finish according to how far back they were from the leader. In order to keep a Covid-safe environment, the entire Olympic distance bike and run will be enclosed in a subdivision that will allow for the select few spectators to see the fast-paced action. Interview with Dave Scott: Scott ran his first Ironman in 1980 and finished in 9:24:33, nearly 2 hours faster than the previous win, with ABC Wide World of Sports broadcasting the event from Kona for the first time. Scott's time and approach is widely considered to have changed the Ironman from a test of endurance to a race. Scott returned in 1982 and finished second. In 1983, Scott won in what was Mark Allen's first Ironman. In what would become a renowned rivalry, Scott would win three of the next four Ironmans over Allen. Scott has stated that he is most proud of his performance in 1994. Another second-place finish, Scott was 40 years old at the time so his race was considered to be a revolutionary feat. Two years later, Scott finished fifth overall. 2001 was his last foray into the Ironman. The 47-year-old Scott had back problems due to some last minute bike changes, which forced him out of the race. Ironwar In 1989, the rivalry between Scott and Allen reached a peak in what has alternately been called the "Ironwar" and "The Greatest Race Ever Run."[5] Scott has stated "I never focused my goals on Mark Allen or what I had to do in the swim or the bike compared to Mark Allen. Ultimately, the competition level sometimes dictated that. After many years of racing, in 1989, we had a very very close race. It seemed like we were bouncing off of one another. It was influenced by our competitive natures." Allen ultimately won with Scott placing second and both broke Scott’s course record. Endurance News: Mo Farah to participate in London Marathon as pacemaker If you need a pacemaker to help you pursue an Olympic qualifying time in the marathon, they couldn't come much better qualified than Britain's most celebrated track and field athlete, Mo Farah. That's the happy scenario for some of Britain's lesser lights who will have the 37-year-old leading them out around the streets of the capital in October's London Marathon. "The London Marathon has been so important to me since I was a schoolboy and when they asked me to do this I thought it would be great to help," British marathon record holder Farah, who finished third and fifth in 2018 and 2019 respectively, told the race's official website. "I am in good shape, I'll be in London that week, and it fits in with my training. I know just how special it is just to compete for your country at an Olympic Games, and it would be great to help other athletes achieve this." Moneyball At The Tour De France: How NTT Is Bringing Analytics To Pro Cycling NTT Pro Cycling does not have the financial might of the sport’s big guns, and over its four seasons on the UCI WorldTour, cycling’s elite-level competition, it has consistently finished towards the bottom end of the team rankings. Yet on Saturday in Nice, Africa’s first and only WorldTour team will be lining up for the 2020 Tour de France with a quiet sense of self-confidence. NTT has a card up the sleeve of its skin-tight, blue and black jersey. “With the information we have at our fingertips, we prepare better than anybody,” says Doug Ryder, NTT’s Team Manager. In collaboration with the Japanese tech giant that sponsors and lends its name to the team, Ryder and his colleagues have, over the past 18 months, developed an analytics-based methodology that has helped them recruit new riders, plan their season, and prepare meticulously for races. The new approach, they hope, will push South Africa-based NTT Pro Cycling to another level, both over the next three weeks in France and in the longer term. Cycling is already a stats-heavy sport, and there are pro teams that have used data in the recruitment process for several years, but Ryder says it is the way that NTT interprets and presents the available information that makes their method innovative. “We’ve always seen technology as an enabler,” Ryder states. “What NTT has done is take all of this information and create the most incredible dashboard which makes it easier for us to make better, more informed decisions. It’s like the Moneyball approach. We find the individuals that are overlooked in the system.” Cycling: Teams with two coronavirus cases in a week will be out of Tour, organisers say PARIS (Reuters) - Two positive coronavirus cases within a week for a Tour de France team will result in the outfit being kicked out of the event starting on Aug. 29, the race organisers said on Friday. “If a team has two positive cases or (members) with strong symptoms within a seven-day period, they will be out of the race,” Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) said in a statement to Reuters. Earlier, sports directors who will be on the event running until Sept. 20 confirmed a report by cycling website Velonews that the race would be over for teams who are found to have two infected members in their ranks. “The measure was announced to us at the Criterium du Dauphine,” one sports director, who declined to be named because he is not authorised to discuss the matter, told Reuters. What's New in the 303: Lookout Mountain Triathlon and the Historic Ties to Race Director, Paul Karlsson Paul Karlsson has had a huge impact on multisport in Colorado for years. Not only was he a founder of what became a very prestigious, national race, The Boulder Peak, he also has produced other races such as the Xterra Indian Peaks and the Lookout Triathlon. He has put on events all over the state including Evergreen and Aspen. Did you know that The Peak awarded Kona spots once upon a time? But Paul has impacted many lives through teaching Colorado history and now business classes at Arvada West High School. He coached the swim team at Columbine when the tragedy happened and had been signed up to do IRONMAN Lake Placid that year and because of the shooting, IRONMAN switched is entry to Kona to show support. He has coached swimming at various clubs in the Western metro area, including at Mt. Vernon Country Club, the host of the upcoming Lookout Triathlon. On today’s episode of Period Story podcast, I’m pleased to share the wonderful and very expansive conversation I had with Allysa Rochelle, the Vulnerability Queen and founder of TING. We talked about trauma and its effect on menstrual health, the vulnerability spectrum, why Black women need to embrace softness and of course, Rochelle shared the story of her first period.Rochelle says that after she got her first period, she kept it secret for 4 months. Eventually, pain become a big part of her period life and she learnt to just get on with it, which she says was part of the negative programming she had around her period quite early on.Listen to hear about the pivotal moment where Rochelle changed her perspective on the pain she was experiencing and the role trauma played in this.Rochelle talks about a light bulb moment when she realised that she had been ignoring her needs because she had always been in service to other people. She says that she had to get really still and ask herself: ‘what do you need? what are your needs?’We had a fascinating discussion about the stereotype of the strong Black woman and how important it is for Black women to embrace softness too and let themselves be vulnerable. Finally, we talked about Rochelle’s self-styled title, ‘The Vulnerability Queen’ and how important it is to lean into vulnerability in a very intentional way.Rochelle says that we need to hold space for ourselves and never ignore what we’re feeling. In this episode, we talk with Allysa and Joe Graves from Central City Church in Grandview Heights (OH). "Because in the process of networking, and trying to meet people who want to be a part of what you're doing, the majority of people you meet, in any business probably, don't want anything to do with it, right? And so you can't let that negativity drag you down, because that can be really discouraging. But then on the other hand, you have to keep going and finding those people who are interested and invest in there." "There is a lot of pressure to succeed. And there's not really a lot of room in our culture for failure, at whatever scale. And so when we feel like we're failing, there's not really room for that. And so we have to keep reminding ourselves that we're still new at this. And we're still trying to figure out what this looks like, in this neighborhood. And with these people." http://www.centralcity.co (www.centralcity.co) Thank you for downloading, listening and subscribing to Business Inspires, a TriVillage Chamber Partnership podcast, presented by The Village of Marble Cliff. For the final episode of season 2 of Vulnerable Podcast, I wanted to share an interview I did with Selina from Project Love earlier this year. I spoke about the sexual abuse I experienced, living in a cult as a child, being in a coma at 19 and all of the spiritual lessons I've gained on the way. Selina gave me the opportunity to tell my own story in its entirety for the first time in my life and it was such a simultaneously scary and liberating experience at the same time. Thank you so much Selina for creating the safe space for me to tell my story. x Link in Bio

This week's episode on the blog is a bit of a different one and a special one. I was joined by Allysa Rochelle, founder and host of the brilliant [Vulnerable Podcast](https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/vulnerable-podcast/id1244426082?mt=2) to talk about vulnerability and demonstrate it in action… I am such a huge fan of Rochelle's and of the powerful work she is doing with her podcast (and beyond). I have been so inspired and learnt so much from her and her guests from their deep dives into all sorts of topics from white supremacy, to hyper-masculinity to sex after trauma - conversations that all require serious vulnerability and openness. So I reached out to Rochelle a few months ago asking if she'd come on the _Project Love podcast_ to talk about vulnerability and why she started the _Vulnerable Podcast_. We met up and talked and she shared a little bit about her personal story and we arrived at the idea that she tell her story for the first time publically on the Project Love podcast, embracing and demonstrating vulnerability in action. And so that is what we did. As such it is quite a long podcast but I didn’t want to cut it down - I wanted Rochelle to be able to tell her story uncut. The most courageous thing any of us can do. So thank you for joining us to create the space for Rochelle’s story to be heard. And thank YOU Rochelle for having the courage and love to share it. x Selina Listen to Rochelle and her Vulnerable Podcast on [iTunes](https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/vulnerable-podcast/id1244426082?mt=2), [Soundcloud](https://soundcloud.com/projectlove/if-you-think-finding-love-is-mostly-down-to-fate-then-think-again#t=0:00) and follow her on Instagram @Vulnerablepodcast and @alyssarochelle

You Asked, We Answered! Transcript of the podcast Hello my name is Allysa and I am a student at Penn State Brandywine. Today I will be answering the question “What are the mental impacts of weather and climate disaster?”. First off, weather and climate disasters are like natural disasters. They are major adverse events resulting from a natural process of the earth and can include floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and natural processes of the earth. We hear about natural disasters often on the news or weather channels where they try to predict when a storm or something of the sort is coming our way and warn us, the people, to evacuate if they feel it’s going to really bad. Some natural disasters that made big news include The tsunami in Thailand in 2004 and hurricane Katrina that hit New Orleans hard in 2005. Natural disasters are something we can’t control but that can come quickly and shake our lives forever. People who are involved have most likely seen, experienced, and lost things that are unimaginable to us. First, people can experience shock immediately after. This reaction can be a combination of shock and denial. [1] This can last for a bit of time, maybe days or weeks. After that people usually have feelings of insecurity. Home is supposed to be a safe place and when that’s taken from you, it is hard to feel secure again. Some things that come from this feeling of insecurity are nightmares, anxiety, or extreme preparation in fear for the next storm. [2] With this anxiety and stress, posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD can follow. PTSD is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event. The symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety. [3] Other long-term issues that can come from these events are depression, issues with eating and obsessive compulsive disorder also known as OCD. Those whose homes were affected are not the only ones subject to these possible aftermath symptoms. It has been reported that many people who help clean up on scene or first responders experience many of these psychological symptoms as well. [4] A lot of first responders say that they can be haunted from the wounded people they saw and saved as well as all of those that they were unable to save. [5] Even though they were not there for the actual event, they’re the ones that come in right after it and can see some of the worst of it. So, we know how natural disasters can affect people, their homes, communities, and families. However it can also affect their relationships with people. Many of those who are victims of an event like this suffer with relationships at school, work, friendships, marriage, or struggle as a parent. [2] With this usually comes distrust, irritability, conflict, withdrawal, isolation, feelings of rejection or abandonment, judgment, or being over controlling. [6] Although all of these things mentioned are normal reactions to extreme stress like a natural disaster, there are times when those who are affected may need to seek help if certain symptoms do not go away. As we mentioned before, shock and disbelief are normal. People may have a hard time accepting the reality of what happened. There are ways to help reduce these feelings like staying away from media exposure and avoiding distressing images. [4] Watching these things can bring memories back that you’re trying to avoid. Another suggestion is to accept your feelings by mourning the losses and not forcing the healing process. [2] It may take a long time but by accepting your emotions it is easier to move on and reconnect with uncomfortable emotions with little or no stress and anxiety. It is also encouraged for people to reach out to others because, like I mentioned, it is easy to withdrawal from people after an event like this. If people surround themselves around others, especially those who have experienced the same event, you can work together to get through the problem and the results can be extremely positive. In fact, victims of Hurricane Katrina reported that the sense of community that was found in the aftermath of the hurricane was unbelievable. [7] They said it restored their faith and lifted their spirits having everyone work together to rebuild their homes and lives. Shifting gears here, I wanted to talk a little more about climate change and how it affects people. Something that has been talked about more often now than ever is seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder also known as SAD. Seasonal affective disorder is a mood disorder that affects an individual at the same time every year. For most, it occurs around September or October then the weather gets cooler and lasts until April or May. Between 60% and 90% of those who have this disorder, are women. Woman ages 15 to 55 are the most likely to develop seasonal depression. Interestingly enough, although people think that this disorder is based off of the temperature of the seasons, it really has to do with the sunlight, or lac there of. A new idea of light therapy has become popular in treating this disorder and has shown between a 50 and 80 percent chance of remission. [8] In conclusion, natural disasters have both short term and long term affects on people. They do affect everyone differently depending on how they handle stress and the person’s role they played in the event. There are warning signs to look for in victims of natural disasters. If you or someone you know has been through a traumatic event like this, and you think they need further help, there are many support groups around as well as counseling available. So that’s it for the question “what are the mental impacts of weather and climate disaster”. I hope you enjoyed and thanks for listening. My friend came to my apartment and let me ask her questions about cutting herself. It turns out, the problems went way deeper than the cuts did. She spent multiple stints in rehab facilities to try and overcome her problems with self abuse. See, cutting was just the beginning. She also had to deal with anorexia. It's a complex web.
