DAMN! They Were Good celebrates the careers of the most exciting and influential fighters in MMA history, and on the first episode of 2023, the MMA Fighting crew remembers the best of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua as he prepares for the final fight of his incredible career. Entering into MMA in 2002 as the little brother of Murilo "Ninja" Rua, Shogun quickly made a name for himself with one of the most legendary runs ever in 2005, winning the Pride Middleweight Grand Prix with career-defining performances against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem, and Ricardo Arona. Rua then joined the UFC in 2007 where after some initial struggles, he was able to capture the UFC light heavyweight title from Lyoto Machida, and he did all of this before turning 30 years old. The UFC is on a brief break once again, and that means the Depressed-us is back in action. And we've got some make up work to do from our last show, that featured an all-too-fun main event between Luke Rockhold and Paulo Costa. Fortunately we've solved that conundrum with another dive into one of our favorite bad MMA genres: other brothers. While we had intended to make this an all Alex Stiebling opponent theme week (he's fought Mark Hughes, Jason Guida, Murilo Rua, and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira), only two of those fights ended up being 'D-u' worthy. So we've decided to tackle an additional “other brothers" Depressed-us instead... these bouts feature the less notable, less talented, less famous siblings of some of MMA's favorite fighters. We're kicking things off with a bout between Ildemar Alcântara and Leandro Silva from 'UFC on Fuel TV: Nogueira vs. Werdum', at 6:04. This bout went to decision after three rounds. Then we're jumping to 'Jason Guida vs. Alex Stiebling' at WEC 22, at 32:58. This bout also went to decision after three rounds. And finally, we're wrapping the whole thing up with 'Mark Hughes vs. Alex Stiebling' at UFC 28, at 57:13. This bout went to decision after two rounds, which is how things rolled back then.As is usual, we're watching all of this week's fights on UFC Fight Pass. If you'd like to watch along with us, start each video from the beginning when Zane says “go.” If you're watching these fights on another platform, Connor will try and mark the start of round 1 so you can sync your video up to that.If you enjoy our shows, "heart" us here on SC, or "like" & share over or on your BE Presents Podcast platform of choice: * YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BloodyElbowPresents * Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bloody-elbow-presents/id984162015 * iHeartRadio: www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Blood…Presents-30639274 * Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/55S2dpKYVqndaPTUojkELm?si=oGGPZ4kESkWZigLNnEg1ug * Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/podcast/bloody-e…esents?refid=stp * TuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Sports--Recreation-Podcasts/Bloody-Elbow-Presents-p1190843/ * OverCast: overcast.fm/itunes984162015/bloody-elbow-presents * Player FM: player.fm/series/bloody-elbow-presents * & Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/b53e5086-2334-497c-82c0-24ddb5e0cfbb/Bloody-Elbow-Presents For previous episodes of the show, check out our playlists on any of our BE Presents channels. Sign up for ESPN+ and watch UFC Fight Night: ‘Whittaker vs. Till’ - #UFCFIGHTISLAND at: go.web.plus.espn.com/c/482924/56698…id=BloodyElbow This weeks’ UFC event on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi is massive. Not so much in profile or depth (although it’s got a lot of solid talent all up and down), but just in sheer size. With a planned 15 bouts there’s a serious chance this could be the longest fight card in UFC history. Atop it all, is a middleweight top contender’s bout between Darren Till and Robert Whittaker. Throw Alexander Gustafsson’s heavyweight debut, a Shogun Lil’ Nog trilogy bout, and another chance for Carla Esparza to play strawweight spoiler in the mix, and it should provide a good variety of fascinating action. How to breakdown the UFC cards with Complete Sports Media and our resident analyst Scott Holburn

This was a great breakdown of the UFC card from Abu Dhabi that had the main event featuring the Flyweight world title. It was a rematch between Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo that ended in controversial fashion the first time. The was no controversy this time as Figueiredo knocked Benavidez down three times and finally submitted him with a rear naked choke. There is finally a belt holder after Henry Cejudo vacated the belt in February of this year. There would have been a champion just over a week later if Figueiredo had not missed weight. He won the first matchup after the collided heads with an accidental head butt that rocked Benavidez. Joe lost concentration and got knocked out. With their being no belt holder the UFC decided to let them settle it again this past weekend. There were a lot of good fights on this card and it was fun to watch and breakdown. We also looked ahead to the last of the four consecutive cards on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, The Main event of this card UFC Fight Night 174 is a middleweight matchup between Robert Whittaker vs Darren Till. I think everyone agrees that this should be a great battle between two top contenders. There are also three legends of the sport on the card fall from Brazil. Shogun Rua, Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira are all fighting at this event. Enjoy the breakdown. Take Care, Love yah, Bye for now

The P to the P to the other P return with the third and final instalment of their PRIDE Fighting Championship retrospective! Daniel, George and David have for your delectation another tranche of fights that combines the equal parts classic brutality and shitty nonsense that characterised Japan's greatest ever MMA promotion. Along the way we discuss the relative merits of violent combat sports and Jools Holland's Hootenanny as New Year's entertainments, which Brazilian MMA fighters would combine to make the best football team (complete with tactical discussions!), savour the sweet return of Podcast Spirit Animal Yoji Anjo, and end with an ill-advised musical number which Statto has been bound by penalty of Burning Hammer never to repeat. Enjoy, and tune in next time, when we'll actually discuss wrestling, honest...
