UFC 283 was a rough night for Brazil. In the first half of this week's episode we discuss the results of that show, including big wins for new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jamahal Hill, and new unified UFC Flyweight Champion Brandon Moreno. Plus the retirements of legendary fighters Shogun Rua and Glover Teixiera. In the second half of the show we dig deeper into Francis Ngannou's free agency now that he's told his side of the story, and while we didn't actually watch it, we do gawk at how poorly Dana White's Power Slap seems to be doing so far. Finally, in our Hammer History segment we look back 500 episodes to mid-February 2013, and Ronda Rousey's UFC debut at UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche. .You can find us Wednesday nights at 6:30pm on CFMU 93.3 FM, and online at http://www.thehammermma.com, The Itunes Store, Stitcher, MMAPodcast.com, Player.FM, or find @SteveJeffery on Twitter
The first UFC pay-per-view card of 2023 is upon us! With just three days until the UFC makes its highly-anticipated return to Brazil, welterweight Neil Magny and lightweight Terrance McKinney join Matt and Jim via Zoom from their hotels in Rio de Janeiro for today's episode of UFC Unfiltered. While previewing his fight against fifth-ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns, Magny looks back on his three previous fights in Rio to share what it's like as an American fighting a Brazilian in front of an incredibly rowdy and supportive collection of hometown fans. Magny talks about his military service before ultimately wrapping up the interview by explaining how his conditioning level has him prepared to win Saturday's fight and set up a fight against Belal Muhammad after that. Then, Terrance McKinney joins the show ahead of his fight against Brazilian lightweight Ismael Bonfim on the early prelims. Eager to fight outside of the United States for the first time in his career, McKinney outlines his goals for 2023, which include fighting several times in the year and ultimately breaking into the lightweight top ten. He then opens up about how living on a military base in Germany, dominating on the Washington high school wrestling scene, and surviving a near-death experience have shaped him into the man he is today. The guys wrap up the show by going up and down Saturday's UFC 283 card for final predictions.

It's the last show of the year, the guys pull out their gifts, Eddie's gonna watch Jordan sing, and UFC 282 ended with controversy and disappointment. Paddy Pimblett was gifted a decision and there is STILL no light heavyweight champ. Judging didn't ruin Bellator 289, though (but not for lack of trying). Raufeon Stots defeated Danny Sabatello, Liz Carmouche defended her title and left no doubt, and Patchy Mix choked out Magomed Magomedov. In boxing, Bud Crawford got a KO, Teofimo Lopez squeaked-out a split decision, Manny Pacquiao beat up a YouTuber, and Monster Inoue retained his undisputed bantamweight title. In What's Up With That, the guys cover a big March 2023 in the UFC that includes trips to London & San Antonio, the retirement of Shogun Rua, and BKFC free agency. The UFC holds their last card of the year Saturday, with Jared Cannonier taking on Sean Strickland in the main event of what could turn into a pretty good card. Bellator & RIZIN meet on New Year's Eve to close-out the year, featuring Patricio Pitbull, AJ McKee, Juan Archuleta, Kyoji Horiguchi, and John Dodson. Not much big boxing before the guys come back, but Gervonta Davis faces Hector Garcia in the first week of January. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#IR #Covid #NBA #UFC274 #Phoenix #Boxing We both came into this podcast at less than 100% and sick and hurt. This was the first podcast in three weeks. It turned out to be pretty good podcast episode even though both participants have ailments that rendered them much less than 100%. We started talking about the semi-finals in both NBA conferences as three of the series are tied at two games each. The third series between Golden State and Memphis was just getting underway as we were finishing the episode. Big comebacks from 2 games to nothing down by Philly tying their matchup with Miami. The Dallas Mavericks deadlocked their series at two with the top seeded Phoenix Suns. The Boston Celtics took a big win in game four of their battle with the Milwaukee Bucks to knot it up at two games apiece as we were recording this podcast. Our conversation shifted to the UFC 274 and the good, bad and the ugly of this weekends card in Phoenix, Arizona. Jason wanted to get the ugly out of the way off the start. The co-main event was a terrible fight with no entertainment value to speak of. Rose Namajunas came in as the Champion of the Women's Strawweight division and was trying to avenge a defeat to Carla Esparza 8 years prior. It was an absolute no show by Rose and almost the same for Esparza who recaptured the belt after losing it 2,612 days before. The next longest days between title reigns was Frank Mir who went 1,234 days in between. It was ugly and not worth our time. Speaking of ugly the fight between two old guys in Ovince St Preux and Shogun Rua seemed to make you question if both guys still had enough to continue fighting in the UFC it was ugly. We discussed the good with big wins by Charles Olivera and Michael Chandler who both currently occupy the lightweight division. The bad was that even though Charles Olivera was the champ of the weight class and won he walked out of the cage without the belt because he missed weight and now the title is vacant. The other good and one of the highlights of the night is the announcement of Daniel Cormier getting a Hall of Fame spot and it led to tears and for once a speechless DC. At the same time the UFC was holding their card the boxing world had their top pound for pound fighter on the planet moving up in weight and taking on the champ at Light Heavyweight. Canelo Alvarez came into this bout with a 57-1-2 record and was considered the best boxer in the world. Dmitri Bivol put his belts on the line and tried to preserve his undefeated record that sat at 19-0. Canelo was the much smaller fighter and it was too much for him but was a huge upset in the combat sports universe. It looks like a trilogy fight between him and Triple G will now have to wait and it looks like a rematch clause will be invoked. This fight sent shockwaves through the world of boxing and will be interesting to see a rematch in the near future. Shaun and Chuck recap a busy weekend in combat sports, including Paul Felder and Dan Hooker going to war in the UFC Auckland main event and Tyson Fury's dominant victory over Deontay Wilder in what was likely the biggest moment of Saturday night's slate. First, the guys discuss Dan Hooker's razor-thin decision over Paul Felder, how they had the fight scored, if this win vaults "The Hangman" into a new tier in the UFC Lightweight division, whether we've seen the last of Paul Felder, who hinted at possible retirement following the loss, and how the idea of a “robbery” is starting to lose all meaning because of the MMA Twitter commentariat. Plus, undercard highlights and a record-breaking streak for Angela “Overkill” Hill. Then, the guys talk about Tyson Fury's incredible performance on Saturday night, the magnitude of the event being heightened by the pageantry of both fighters' walkouts, and why potentially the MMA media favored Fury heading into the bout while boxing pundits largely went with Wilder. Plus, a special shoutout to the “Oxfighter” Khaos Williams, who gave The Man and the MITH exclusive insight into his awesome nickname, recently announced fights like Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jojo Calderwood, Chris Weidman vs. Jack Hermansson, Shogun Rua vs. Lil' Nog 3, and thoughts on Josh Fabia's bizarre interviews last week, including one conducted by The Athletic MMA's own Josh Gross.
