Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 2, dognapping is the featured crime. This is Going to the Dogs by Bonnar SpringDELIBERATIONMamie may have figured out what's going on but Evan definitely needs our help to unpack this dognapping caper for his grandfather, Gordon. Here are the suspects in the order we met them:Bonnie, the daily housekeeper with a dog of her ownLou, the down on his luck musician turned chauffeur and handy manPaul, the cousin with a checkered pastJanice Dobosh, the real estate agent who swears she had an appointmentABOUT Bonnar SpringBonnar Spring writes international thrillers and short stories with morally ambiguous protagonists. A nomad at heart, she hitchhiked across Europe at sixteen, joined the Peace Corps after college, and trekked to Machu Picchu for a significant birthday. Bonnar's short fiction has won both the AlBlanchard and Derringer Awards. She hosts the Crime Wave podcast, part of the Authors on the Air Radio Network.ABOUT DognappingDognapping has been a real thing for a long while. In Victorian times, organized gangs of dognappers stalked and stole pets from the wealthy, which wasn't categorized as a crime. The crime website Crime Reads has a story of poet Elizabeth Barrett's beloved dog Flush, who was dognapped three times. More recently, in February 2021, a dognapping turned vicious when the man walking Lady Gaga's three French Bulldogs was shot to acquire the dogs. One pup fled but the other two were captured and taken. The man, Ryan Fisher, was shot in the chest. He survived but lost a lung and, not to mention to psychological damage. Lady Gaga offered a $500,000, to questions asked reward and the dogs were returned two days later. But questions were asked and the apparent hero, Jennifer McBride, was arrested with four others and charged with attempted murder. James Jackson was sentenced to 21 years for the attempted murder of Fisher.McBride pled the charge down to receiving stolen property and was sentenced to two years' probation. But that wasn't enough for McBride, who then sued Lady Gaga for the $500,000 reward plus $1.5 mil in damages. Lady Gaga stood her ground and the judge sided with her, finding that McBride could not benefit from the wrongdoing but seeking to enforce the contract.https://crimereads.com/dognapping/https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-67003283WRAP UPThat wraps this episode of Mysteries to Die For. In today's episode we talk to mom Lindsay Bonnar about her home birth story. Lindsay planned a home birth for her first baby, but circumstances required a transfer to a birth center. Now pregnant with her second, Lindsay and her husband are planning a home birth again for the second round. Lindsay is another beautiful face of home birth, sharing her plans for home birth with her daughter that eventually shifted into a transfer to a birthing center. Now pregnant with baby number two, Lindsay is planning another home birth, a decision that we are totally inspired by and know others will be as well. For Lindsay, birth was the most spiritual experience of her life. And she talks about trusting herself and her body in such a way - it's an amazing example to women everywhere to empower themselves to choose in alignment with what's best for them. Another aspect of Lindsay's story that really resonated with me and Matthew was the role of her husband Kevin and how awesomely he showed up for the birth experience. Dads and birth partners, take notes from this one! You can learn more about Lindsay and the resources mentioned in the show below. In 2019, authorities in California searched the sea for Scottish tourist Kim Avis, who was last seen going for a swim. BBC journalist Myles Bonnar remembered Avis as an eccentric street vendor from his hometown. But American police believed Avis faked his disappearance to avoid criminal prosecution for sexual assault back in Scotland. An international manhunt failed to turn up the fugitive. But a thousand miles away, a Colorado woman was growing suspicious of her new friend with the indiscernible accent. In “Dead Man Running” from BBC Sounds, Bonnar recounts the search for Avis. It also does a deep dive into his life as a figure around town, the crimes he committed, and why it took years to bring him to justice.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "DEAD MAN RUNNING" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. Susan Bonnar is one heck of a lady! She started her career in the Royal Navy as an air traffic controller, but after twenty plus years, she left as her husband was also serving and she needed to be at home for her family. During her time in the Navy, she'd started making cards and wanted to do more of this when she left but realised that without a network, it was incredibly hard to reach an audience and sell. This led to the formation of a collaborative group, which developed over time to become the British Craft House... but it wasn't a linear journey. In fact, it was listening to Sir Tom Hunter at Theo Paphitis' SBS event a few years ago that kicked everything up a level, as Susan discusses on today's episode. And it's gone full circle... at Theo's event last week, Susan was a speaker on the main stage. And she was hugely inspiring and simply incredible. What a lady... you're going to love this one...

Linda Bonnar is a successful life coach and entrepreneur. She's also a former educator, and has built her services around both her experiences in the teaching profession, and her teenager years with mental health struggles in her hometown of Ballinasloe in County Galway in Ireland. During those fragile, formative years of her childhood she had the misfortune of being targeted by a clique of mean-spirited schoolgirls, which made her road to today all the more difficult. But she has used that hard journey to be of service to others, through her coaching and her business, Upstrive. We applaud her willingness to share her life story with us, and her focus on helping others. And she continues to work on her own mental health constantly, as we all should. We need to do a regular check-in with our feelings, she advises us strongly. We need to work hard at our own self-awareness. Have a listen, and you'll also learn the positive role horses have played in Linda's life. Horses (and a pony!) have been in Linda's life, and that of her family, for ever. And learn too of Linda's adventures as a teacher in Qatar and Dubai.Ballinasloe, by the way, is famous for its horse fair, where, legend has it, Napoleon himself bought a horse. IN THIS PODCAST:The importance of having a solid foundation of self-confidence How to improve self-worth and self-esteem Self-esteem in business Linda's three things to remember The importance of having a solid foundation of self-confidence Self-confidence and self-esteem are not only important for you to function well in life, but they are important because they provide you with a solid foundation of self-worth. [If our foundation is poor] anything else that we try and build on top of that foundation is incredibly unstable. Jobs, relationships, how we think of ourselves … our self-esteem, and self-confidence, if that foundation isn't solid, nothing else is going to stand on it. (Linda Bonnar) If you do not have self-esteem and struggle with confidence, you will struggle with upholding healthy relationships and boundaries because you can say no, accept a good partner, or take the job offer. Self-worth, which comes from having self-esteem and confidence, is crucial to you having a healthy, vital, and happy life. How to improve self-worth and self-esteem Knowing that you are a good person and you deserve to be treated with respect … starts with you. We teach people how we want to be treated often by how we treat ourselves. (Linda Bonnar) Improving your self-worth and self-esteem comes from you, and starts with you. You need to treat yourself with respect, compassion, and friendship to begin to feel worthy of accepting that from others. If you are in the habit of accepting negative behavior and poor emotional hygiene from those in your life, then you may think that is what you are worth, but that is not true. [Become] aware of the thoughts in your [head] and the feelings that [you] allow to run the show as well. Be mindful of the story [you] are telling yourself, what's that narrative that [you're] listening to on a day-to-day basis? (Linda Bonnar) Self-esteem in business If you notice that you are falling into the comparison trap, catch yourself. The more you become aware the more easily you can stop doing it. It is not only a comparison trap, but you are also then assuming the life of the other person you are comparing yourself to. Use the three Cs: Catch: catch yourself when you are having comparative thoughts and when your self-worth dips. Challenge: challenge the thought and force yourself to look at only the facts, and not to get swept away in assumptions. Change: change the thought by changing the question, “what is a more empowering way I can think about myself?” Linda's three things to remember 1 – Listen to hear: do not listen to reply, but rather listen to hear on a deeper level. 2 – Practice...
