It is an area of regal beauty with golden sandy beaches, medieval castles, the largest concentration of championship links golf courses in the world, gourmet restaurants and fabulous coastal and upland walks. In this first Episode, we start in the town of Musselburgh where the Romans left their mark in the first century, to Carbery Hill, the battleground where Mary Queen of Scots lost her Crown. We will see the site of the battle of Prestonpans and hear the true story of how the battle unfolded from Dr Arran Johnston, the Director of Scottish Battlefields. We will pass through Longniddry and hear about Gosford House, a fabulous mansion in the centre of a 5000 acre estate. Then, onto my own village of Aberlady, where Robert Clark, the General Manager of the newly refurbished boutique hotel, the Leddie, will give us his take on the area. From there to the wonderful village of Gullane, voted one of the best places to live in the United Kingdom. With lovely restaurants, cafes, art galleries, ice cream parlours, three golf courses and a wonderful mile-long golden sandy beach, what is there not to love. Andy was heavily influenced in his coaching by some of our previous guests on the podcast such as Garret Kramer, Dicken Bettinger and Sam Jarman who have all built on the work of Sydney Banks exploring the ideas of the Three Principles A lot of what Andy says may well challenge a lot of our existing beliefs especially about our constant need to try to FIX our thinking or to try to get into a perfect mental state to play golf Why trying to ‘fix' the mind often just stirs it up more Knowing WHERE your experience actually comes from How to get back to the TASK at hand When your thinking settles down INSIGHTS appear To get a copy of the new ‘Lost Art of Putting' video program go to www.themindfactor.com To claim your 20% discount put in the Brain Booster code of TLA20 To join us for a special two days at Archerfield with our ‘Lost Art Golf School” 13th -14th August go to www.themindfactor.com

It is wonderful to welcome back onto the Brain Booster my very good friend Gary Nicol, co-author of the best-selling ‘Lost Art of Golf' series. We had as usual a wonderful conversation particularly about our Lost Art schools at Archerfield  We discussed the concept of our RELATIONSHIP to the game of golf  What do we really want from the game?  How we can become a little more SELF LESS and a less SELFISH  Why becoming a great playing partner may actually unlock your own performance.  Why the outcome of a golf shot should never determine your self worth  The biggest myths around consistency How the Trackman numbers tell us what does and doesn't change much in a swing What we should be aiming to influence and WHERE we need to place our ATTENTION We have lots of what I call ‘surface conversations' about golf such as how can I hit it further, score lower, get handicaps down but what about going to a bit deeper level and finding out what REALLY matters to you when you play. How can you get the very most out of this fleeting opportunity called LIFE Is that a conversation REALLY worth having ? It is great to welcome onto the show mental skills and golf coach Trevor Jones to explore a different way of dealing with the thoughts and sensations that can hold such sway over us.  He has a fascinating story to tell as both a player and a coach at a very high level. We discussed how many of the existing models of trying to ‘control' thoughts and just use visualisation techniques proved so ineffective.  How many time have you hit bad shots when you feel GOOD and conversely we have all hit good shots when we are feeling BAD  The psychological flexibility model  Acceptance and Commitment Training Instead of trying to control thoughts and feelings understand how YOU are NOT your thoughts Why it is a myth to think you have to ‘feel good' to play good The way our brain just ‘pumps' out thought  Why we should give our brain a name!!  How you can ‘diffuse' from your thinking  The way out of the matrix  The importance of VALUES based behaviour  How we can move towards what we REALLY value  OPEN  AWARE  ENGAGED   ‘Trevor won the Welsh National Championship in 2008, and played full time professional golf for the next 3 years, yet he struggled when applying traditional sport psychology to himself. After discovering ACT (Acceptance and commitment training) in 2012, Trevor immersed himself in the theory and practice, his research being guided by some of the best in the field. A decade later, Trevor now works for the US based Aware Performance Group, helping college golfers improve their Psychological Flexibility. Trevor also mentors two Sport Psychologists, works privately with up and coming junior golfers, and runs a golf coaching business as a PGA professional. His book ‘Get out of your mind and into your game – how to build Psychological Flexibility on the fairways and beyond' is due for release later this year.'     Social media for Trevor is @mind_your_golf    To book your place at Archerfield for the ‘Lost Art School' go to www.themindfactor.com

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by Performance coach and author Peter Arnott He was co author with Graeme McDowall and Ian Renshaw of the wonderful book ‘A Constraints Led Approach to Golf Coaching' Now with Ian Renshaw he has put together a fantastic learning program called ‘Swing it like Tiger' As we discuss during our time together the program is not really about any positions in Tiger's swing. It is much more about the LEARNING process that he employed to become one of the greatest of all time. We discuss How Tiger spent most of his early development on the golf course with coach Rudy Duran How he learned to create shots Created shots names and how this can help commitment Setting up ‘cues' to trigger his body into action The concept of ‘Tiger Par' and how YOU can apply that to your game successfully Building effective learning environments Situational training The influence of his father Earl Woods who had a background in the Special Forces How Tiger used his visual sense to enhance his learning The Number one SKILL to develop to become a better player How you can ‘tune in' to the golf club so much more Building a repertoire of SHOTS Giving the shots a name to cue your body So much of Peters work is around transferring your training into play How you can use technology more efficiently to transfer your learning? How better training can make you a more adaptable golfer? How can you best apply these ideas to your short game skills Peter also has some wonderful research from Scottish European Tour players about the pitfalls of incorrect training that is not SPECIFIC to what you require as a Tour Player A really great session Peter shared so many wonderful insights to really get you thinking about the way you apply yourself to becoming the player you want to be To find out more about Peter Arnott go to https://www.peterarnottgolf.com To find out more about the program go to www.swingitliketiger.com To book your Mind Factor workshop go to www.themindfactor.com To join us on the Mindfulness Retreat at Archerfield contact us at https://themindfactor.net/contact/

Former Ryder Cup Captain and winner of the USPGA Championship in 1983 Hal shared some wonderful and honest insights into his game, his development and his view on the modern game. Going back to the PGA Championship in 1983 On the back nine on Sunday Hal had his hero Jack Nicklaus chasing him down. He had a number of consecutive bogeys and by his own admission the thought of being labelled a ‘choker' came into his mind. Yet when it REALLY mattered Hal was able to summon an inner strength to get the job done. He explains HOW Hal talks about the key influences in his career The coaching of Jimmy Ballard The mentorship of the great Byron Nelson The conversations they had and how one single insight gave Hal the ability to hit the final tee shot to win his major at Riviera The experience of being a Ryder Cup Captain The reaction of certain players The pairing of Tiger and Phil How they responded The fall out from being on the losing team The questions and the opinions from other people How the defeat affected Hal for a LONG time afterwards and how he had to rekindle his love of the game Hal was also very candid about his relationship with his father What they would change if they had their time again The mistakes that can be made and more importantly what to do about them Such wise words of advice that is so valuable for any parent of a promising junior player A really informative session from a top player To find out more about Hal and his coaching academy Go to www.halsuttongolf.com To reserve your place on the Mindfulness Retreat at Archerfield go to:  https://themindfactor.net/mindfulness-lost-art-event-at-the-exclusive-archerfield-links Find out more about The Mind Factor here: www.themindfactor.com To book your Mind Factor workshop at YOUR club or facility go to https://themindfactor.net/workshops/breakthrough/

It is exciting to announce that we have just finished the final book in the ‘Lost Art' trilogy. The Lost Art of the Short Game will be available in the autumn so it seemed a really good idea to get back onto the Brain Booster fellow author Gary Nicol. Gary has a wealth of experience in coaching from his time on the European Tour working with some of the best players in the world to his current position of coaching from one of the most beautiful golfing locations on earth Archerfield in Scotland We have both been greatly touched by the feedback we have received from the two previous books, The Lost Art of Putting and the Lost Art of Playing golf. It seems we have been able to connect a number of golfers back to the source of the joy of creating shots and putts. Creating shots and putts in YOUR way as opposed to a prescribed method engineered by someone else. On today's show we dive a bit deeper into all things Lost Art What have we actually LOST? More importantly how do we FIND it again? How we lost connection with the real heart and soul of the game Looking more specifically at the SHORT GAME We had the great honour to have the legend of wedges Bob Vokey write the introduction for us to the book. He stressed the importance of knowing what the club in your hand is meant to do and HOW to use it. Gary describes this perfectly This simple understanding will make a BIG difference in your ability to go out and CREATE some great short game shots We look into the role of imagination The often over looked aspect of the game A great session with Gary his wisdom and practical common sense always shine through in his words To find out more about the books go to www.thelostartofgolf.com To find out more about Gary Nicol go to www.performanceprinciples.co.uk To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach go to www.themindfactor.com

Mitch and Matt then compare turbo kits for their 4x4's, and we establish that Joel and Joseph don't know jack about offroading.   Today we are joined by one of the most forward thinking coaches in the UK Oli Morton. Oli is based up at the wonderful Archerfield Links where I have spent many happy days myself. We discuss his own evolution as a golf coach and his developing interest in the holistic approach to the game. Oli has been heavily influenced by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriot at Vision 54 and his own sense of what could be possible in the future shines through his approach to coaching. Oli uses the GEARS system up at Archerfield which is state of the art analysis of how your body is moving during the golf swing. If you get the chance to go to Archerfield then visiting Oli is a MUST Are you trying to make moves in your swing that your body just cannot support? Are you really aware of your own movement patterns? What are some of the most ineffective movement patterns that will hold back your game? Where do you need to have your attention in your swing to get the best out of your practice time? Is it better to make changes in your game with an IMPLICIT approach? In effect you get change without trying to consciously make changes Why Oli believes that we should not have swing ‘thoughts’ but swing ‘feels’ The need to get out on the golf course to train effectively What does a really good training session look like? What are the future developments for a great coach to embrace? We had a really wide ranging and fun chat and I am sure you will really benefit from spending this quality time with Oli For more details of Oli Morton and the programmes he offers go to www.archerfieldgolfclub.com   He is on Twitter @changethegame54   Have you got YOUR Breakthrough Program yet?
