Last week, our Jack Layton Journalism for Change fellow Eleanor Wand shared a piece on rabble.ca which examined the Ontario government's decision to move forward with plans to close 10 of its 19 supervised consumption and treatment sites, despite a report from the auditor general criticizing the decision for lack of planning and consultation. In the piece, she explained that experts and advocates argue that the decision to close these sites – which have been shown to reduce harm and save lives – will worsen the opioid crisis and increase public health and safety risks. Today, Wand sits down with Dr. Alexander Caudarella, the CEO from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) and family physician, to talk about the benefits and misconceptions of supervised consumption sites and how whole communities must work together to discover what feels safe for all. About our guest Dr. Alexander Caudarella is a bilingual family physician with specialty training in substance use health issues. As a leader and clinician, he brings years of collaborative substance use healthcare experience to CCSA from his work across the country. Previously, Alexander served as the medical director of substance use services (SUS) at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, and lead SUS physician with Inner City Health Associates. In his work as a researcher and clinician he frequently advised public health officials on issues related to substance use health. As one of the key leaders of the Toronto Opioid Overdose Action Network, Alexander coordinated the implementation of in-hospital substance use components and developed a regional system to access rapid expert support. He has served as a substance use consultant and clinician for the Government of Nunavut. For more than a decade, Alexander worked on Indigenous-lead programs in Canada and abroad aimed at building capacity, decreasing stigma and building local workforces. He joined CCSA as Chief Executive Officer in August 2022. Through CCSA's work with national and international partners, Alexander wants people in Canada to understand the scope of substance use health and the solutions they can put in place in their communities. He passionately believes that collaboration across sectors is essential in improving the health and well-being of people who use drugs and alcohol. "Migration is movement. It may be escape or connected with ambition and dreams. We selected ‘019 Amazing Grace' because of its connection with the uplift of the spirit. This was our starting point. The end of the field recording repeats ‘closing down sale' and this prompted a vision of closed borders. The juxtaposition of being uplifted and closed down reflected the journey that we often find ourselves on as we migrate from one part of life to another. "We collected our own sound recordings to weave into the original. This included The Kimberleys' live performance of ‘Old England' at the Islington Folk Club (permission granted to use this extract). Rowing around Derwent Water allowed us access to the sound of oars hitting water and conjured up images of those travelling across water to find a better place. A further recording of a street musician singing has been woven into the track to further lift the spirit of the traveller. "We may find ourselves isolated. We may need uplifting. We may need a fresh start. Our final piece reflects that whilst the world may be closing in around us, we must lift our spirits and continue the journey." Amazing Grace in Peckham reimagined by Caroline Grimshaw and Stephen Mugford. Part of the Migration Sounds project, the world's first collection of the sounds of human migration. While the number of pubs in Ireland has been diminishing over the past 15 years, the cause is usually put down to drink driving laws, price increases and a change in culture. But, is the housing crisis to blame too? Joining Seán to discuss is Mark Keenan, Property Editor for the Irish Independent, who has been writing about this.

A saturated reward scheme market is likely to blame for Flybuys' demise. About 90 jobs will be lost when the scheme and its parent company Loyalty NZ close down at the end of the year. Members can still earn Flybuys points until October 31 and have until December 31 to redeem them. Retail and marketing expert Juanita Neville-Te Rito told Mike Hosking that most partners of the scheme will just set up their own reward system now. She says it'll be better for customers who want to be rewarded and recognised, rather than given points. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I have bittersweet news: I am (lovingly) closing down my podcast and business! "Lovingly" - because I have LOVED working on this project, serving my career coaching clients, and meeting my listeners and followers over the last 3+ years! I am PROUD of this body of work and it will continue to exist on the internet to help more people in the future. In this final episode, I explain the rationale behind this personal decision and how I made it. I talk about how my core values have changed, the key questions I asked myself when I made this decision, the "warning signs" that helped me understand that it was time for a change, and why I am ready to divest myself from grind & hustle culture.
