California Cruise in Düsseldorf, offered in short- and long-wheelbase forms with 79 kWh and 86 kWh batteries respectively, sleeping accommodation for two, and first deliveries due in early 2027 from €60,761 (about $70,800). Standard kit includes the Interior Style and Comfort Packages plus the PowerSocket vehicle-to-load adapter, which delivers 2 kW continuous and 3.6 kW peak power, while California Mode keeps USB ports live and air conditioning running at sleeping temperature for up to 48 hours depending on charge and outside conditions.MERCEDES-AMG CLA 45 IS A DIFFERENT BEASTThe electric Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 saloon is on sale in the UK at £66,750 (about $90,660), matching the outgoing petrol car's price and undercutting the plug-in hybrid C63 by £34,000 for comparable output, with the Shooting Brake £1000 more and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N its nearest rival at £65,800. Three Yasa axial-flux motors produce 671bhp for a 3.0sec 0-62mph time in the 2.3-tonne saloon, with claimed ranges of 416 and 398 miles, 330kW charging giving 10-80% in 22 minutes, a rear-axle drift mode, and deliveries starting next year.51% OF U.S. CONSUMERS WOULD CONSIDER A CHINA-MADE VEHICLEA Dave Cantin Group market outlook report found 51% of U.S. consumers would consider a China-made vehicle despite Chinese brands not being sold there, with willingness at 77% among under-35s versus 36% among those 55 and older, driven by affordability as average transaction prices sit near $50,000 and monthly payments run far above five-year-ago levels. Chinese brands have taken roughly 10% share in Europe and Mexico in under five years, a pace that took Japanese and Korean makers nearly two decades, and the resulting collapse in established automakers' China business, combined with the EV unwind and tariffs, is already reshaping product and production decisions with direct consequences for U.S. dealers.ELECTRIFIED MODELS FILL JULY'S FASTEST-SELLING USED-CAR TOP 10For the first time since Autotrader UK began tracking the data, no petrol or diesel model appeared in July's 10 fastest-selling used cars, with eight BEVs and two hybrids from MG and Toyota filling the list, led by the hybrid MG ZS at 13 days, the Kia Niro at 15 and the Tesla Model 3 at 17. A year earlier BEVs held only four of the ten places, and July's slowest-selling used models were entirely petrol and diesel, with no BEV among them.TERRA CHARGE PLANS 2,500 NACS POINTS IN JAPANJapan's Terra Charge will begin adding NACS charging from 2028 at commercial sites, major transport routes and hotels, targeting 2,500 points by the end of 2033 and studying a NACS-based AC charger for hotels and apartment blocks, though no specifications or timeline have been disclosed. The move responds partly to Tesla driver demand reported by Nikkei Asia, but with only 1,323 registered NACS points against roughly 68,000 charging points nationally, most on CHAdeMO, and a government goal of 300,000 points by 2030, NACS will add connector variety rather than displace the incumbent standard.DCBEL PLATFORM ADOPTED IN THREE V2X PILOTSDcbel's bidirectional charging platform has been selected for three V2X pilots — California's REDWDS scheme, a PG&E programme and a MassCEC demonstration — offering drivers and fleets equipment funding, lower bills and payments of up to $3,200 per vehicle per year for exporting energy to the grid. The economics depend on vehicle-to-grid export, yet customers have so far opted for vehicle-to-home installations, dcbel had shipped nothing under the programmes at the time of reporting, and most jurisdictions still prohibit grid export altogether.KGM RAISES MUSSO EV AWD TOWING RATINGKGM has lifted the all-wheel-drive Musso EV dual-cab ute's braked towing rating from 1,800kg to 2,300kg, exceeding the 2,000kg rating of Toyota's AWD electric Hilux. The revision undercuts the claim made by former prime minister Scott Morrison during the 2019 Australian election that EVs could not tow a trailer or boat to a camping spot, an argument that became part of the climate culture war, though what any BEV can tow still rests on the rating its manufacturer assigns.PSW WINS ESTONIA FERRY MCS CONTRACTNorway's PSW Power & Automation will equip Estonia's Virtsu–Kuivastu route with a Megawatt Charging System of two charging points at each end, each rated up to 5 MW on a 1,500-volt architecture, to recharge the country's new battery-electric ferry during port stops before its scheduled completion by the end of 2028. The ferry will carry 380 passengers and either 110 cars or eight lorries, making it smaller than the incumbent Piret and Toll, while the charging system will also be open to other compatible vessels, drawing on PSW's Nordic record of more than 250 MW of shore power and over 100 MWh of battery storage.WAYMO SAYS L2 IS INSUFFICIENT FOR L4Waymo has published 10 AI lessons drawn from over 200 million fully autonomous miles, arguing that incrementally improving a Level 2 driver-assistance system is a "false summit" that cannot safely reach Level 4, because neither billions of simulated miles nor millions of supervised miles replicate operating without a human backup. The company, which runs more than 500,000 paid driverless rides a week and targets a million by year-end, uses camera, lidar and radar redundancy and warns against black-box end-to-end networks, in contrast to Tesla's camera-only Tesla Vision, its end-to-end Full Self-Driving versions 14 and 15, and an Austin robotaxi service that has logged 380,000 unsupervised miles.

Charging availability remained the top barrier at 46%, though concerns around cost and charging time all eased year on year.HONDA SWINGS TO LOSS AS HYBRID STRATEGY HARDENSHonda posted its first operating loss since going public in 1957, recording a ¥414.3 billion ($2.6 billion) operating loss for the fiscal year ended March 2026, driven by ¥1.57 trillion in EV-related write-offs. CEO Toshihiro Mibe abandoned the 2040 combustion-free target and pivoted to 15 new hybrid models through 2030, with two prototypes — a fastback sedan and a red crossover — unveiled in Tokyo on May 14.SLATE AUTO PLANS 392 MICHIGAN JOBSSlate Auto plans to add 392 jobs and invest $10.4 million at its Troy, Michigan headquarters over five years, nearly doubling its Michigan workforce ahead of its low-cost electric pickup launch later in 2026. The Bezos-backed company, now led by CEO Peter Faricy following a leadership change in March, will focus new roles on engineering, design, and R&D, with positions starting at $43 per hour.TOYOTA HILUX ADDS EV FOR 2026Toyota will launch the ninth-generation Hilux in 2026 with both a fully electric and a diesel version, with the electric model reaching UK customers first in June in Icon (£52,845 after grant) and Invincible (£55,695 after grant) trims. Both electric variants qualify for the UK government's £5,000 plug-in van grant and come in a Double Cab body style, with a two-seat commercial conversion to follow later in 2026.VAUXHALL MATCHES EV AND DIESEL VAN PRICESVauxhall has achieved finance and lease price parity between the electric and diesel versions of its Combo and Vivaro vans, with the Combo Electric available from £305 per month and the Vivaro Electric from £335 per month — both matching their diesel equivalents on 36-month, 10,000-mile terms. The parity has been extended to the Astra and Frontera passenger cars as part of a wider brand strategy to remove the cost barrier to electrification.TRATON RAISES €850 MILLION FOR EV DRIVEVolkswagen-majority-owned Traton Group has raised €850 million to accelerate battery-electric drivetrain development across MAN, Scania, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus. Battery-electric vehicle sales across the group grew to 1.4% of total sales in Q1 2026, up from 0.9% in Q1 2025, with MAN and Scania both expanding their electric lineups.RENAULT CLAIMS EDGE OVER CHINESE RIVALSRenault CEO François Provost claimed the group's European manufacturing efficiency surpasses Chinese rivals, while acknowledging it still uses Chinese supply chains and a China development centre to bring new models to market in under 24 months. With French and European plants running at 85% capacity and momentum from models like the electric Renault 5, Renault is deepening ties with Nissan — both holding 15% stakes in each other — while Nissan's CEO signalled desire for a closer partnership.BYD ATTO 2 DM-I PRICED FOR UKBYD has confirmed UK pricing for the Atto 2 DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV, with orders opening 2 June 2026 and first deliveries in August. The Active trim starts at £26,995 with a 7.8kWh battery and 24 miles of EV range, while the Boost costs £29,995 with an 18kWh battery and up to 55 miles of EV range.OMODA-JAECOO MAKES A FAST UK STARTJaecoo and Omoda launched in the UK in March 2025 with immediate impact — the Jaecoo 7 became that month's best-selling car, and by year-end over 26,000 units had sold, making it the fourth most popular retail car in the UK. The brand reached a 1.4% UK market share, ahead of Seat and Suzuki, built on Range Rover Evoque-inspired styling, competitive pricing, and strong dealer incentives.POLESTAR SAYS FUEL SHOCK DRIVES EV DEMANDPolestar CEO Michael Lohscheller said "pump anxiety" has overtaken "range anxiety" as the key driver of EV consideration, with WTI and Brent crude up 50% since late February due to disruption at the Strait of Hormuz. Polestar is seeing rising demand for both new and used EVs as a result, though eroding US tax incentives and broader cost pressures continue to make the American market challenging.

This week on Oil & Whiskey, we sit down with Jasmine Green, better known as @six_four_stout.If you've seen her work, you already know. Some of the cleanest metal shaping and fabrication out there right now, all coming out of a shed in Australia.Jasmine walks us through how it all started, from getting into mini trucks with her first Hilux to building her now well-known Toyota Stout. What began as a simple project quickly turned into something much bigger, pushing her skills in metal shaping, design, and fabrication further than expected. We get into her process, learning as she goes, figuring things out without everything planned, and the mindset it takes to tackle builds at this level. A lot of the work you see is not mapped out ahead of time. It's built piece by piece through creativity and problem solving.
In our fortieth deployment of BungleTech, Michael and I take a trip to Japan as we dive into a brian cache of Japanese BattleTech releases recently unearthed by members of the community in our primary topic segment and ask ourselves the question: is this even BattleTech or have we wandered into some Tetatae adjacent alternative BattleTech timeline? Repaying debt, buying new farm machinery, splashing out on a holiday or even purchasing a classic Hilux. Those are some of the ways Fonterra's farmer-shareholders plan to spend Tuesday's major capital return. Farmers have received an average $400,000 each for their share of the sale of the company's consumer brands to French company Lactalis. Anna Sargent reports.
We got your feedback, so there's more VAN TALK this week - with the KIA option coming soon! Plus Subaru has new EVs coming and even TOYOTA has gone EV on the HILUX!! Pigs can fly!

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1241: CarMax leans on price cuts and marketing to spark sales, Toyota takes its iconic Hilux electric in Europe, and Walmart keeps scaling drone delivery as demand grows.CarMax is shifting back to fundamentals as sales and earnings continue to slide. The company will cut prices, trim costs, and increase marketing to regain momentum heading into 2026.Q3 results saw unit sales down 8% and earnings down 50% year-over-year.CarMax will use targeted price cuts to spark demand, not blanket reductions. The company is lowering margins while boosting marketing to drive traffic.SG&A will be cut by $150M annually despite increased ad spend.“Our average selling prices have drifted upward and appear to be less attractive to customers,” said Interim CEO David McCreight.Toyota just electrified one of its most important global trucks. Hello all! Dan here. I did not have time to listen to the show as a new father, but I'm sure John made a barn burner of an episode. As for me, I'll be back next week to talk about my venture into fatherhood. In our thirty fifth deployment of BungleTech my spheroid co-host Michael and I dive into the psyche, or perhaps psychosis, of Jamie Wolf as we take a look at his annotated version of the Art of War, we pause for a moment and discuss the variety of pronunciation mistakes we are making on a regular basis in our Rule Mistake Discovery segment, and then we wrap it all up by reading a sample chapter from the book we just discussed. Our Honourable Patreon SupportersMechWarriors: Canaan McKenna, Ed Magilton, HeyZeus, Lorian Sunrider, Malathis, MetalEd, Phil Raider Roby, Slurski LispersTechnicians: Blunderdome, Chris Cannon, DarkTremere, Dire Situation, Keflyn, Klint, Matthew Hopper, ML8211, TheRock3393, ZemerBondspersons: Arbriar, Fiddler, Fullmetal Gundam, G, Hilux, Itswhatevan, Offensive Titan, Rob Carpenter, Rob Prescott, William BeckerSegment Start TimesExtraordinary Proclamation - 1:10Podcast Primary Topic - 4:48Rule Check Discovery -49:07 Stories of the Inner Sphere - 1:11:49BungleTech LinksBungleTech Discord Homebase Under BungleTech -> https://discord.gg/ahe6QdCPfgBungleTech Email -> BungleTech@outlook.comBungleTech Global Campaign Initiative Document Repository - > https://www.patreon.com/posts/global-campaign-125155370BungleTech Patreon - > https://www.patreon.com/BungleTechBungleTech Podcast Game Mode Collection - > https://1drv.ms/f/s!AiU1hP8RhYzUn5FwSg7PaYnHbJvm7QBungleTech Twitter/X -> BungleTechTweetOther Important LinksKSAGG VI Information and Registration -> https://tabletop.events/conventions/ksagg-vi
In our 34th episode of BungleTech my spheroid co-host Michael start by sharing some exciting updates in our Extraordinary Proclamation Segment, before we question the widely held belief that "BattleTech hasn't changed that much since its origin." as we do a rule by rule comparison of BattleTech Second Edition and the 8th printing of the BattleMech Manual in our general topic segment, and then in our Stories of the Inner Sphere segment we break away from tradition and share a variety of the bad 'Mech articles I have had the honour of recording for SARNA!Our Honourable Patreon SupportersMechWarriors: Canaan McKenna, Ed Magilton, HeyZeus, Lorian Sunrider, Malathis, MetalEd, Phil Raider Roby, Slurski LispersTechnicians: Blunderdome, Chris Cannon, DarkTremere, Dire Situation, Keflyn, Klint, Matthew Hopper, ML8211, Seth WhiteFox, ZemerBondspersons: Arbriar, Fiddler, Fullmetal Gundam, G, Hilux, Itswhatevan, Offensive Titan, Rob Carpenter, Rob Prescott, William BeckerSegment Start TimesExtraordinary Proclamation - 1:20Podcast Primary Topic - 5:45Stories of the Inner Sphere - Rakshasa (1:05:28) Raider (1:17:35) Targe (1:29:21)BungleTech LinksBungleTech Discord Homebase Under BungleTech -> https://discord.gg/ahe6QdCPfgBungleTech Email -> BungleTech@outlook.comBungleTech Global Campaign Initiative Document Repository -> https://www.patreon.com/posts/global-campaign-125155370BungleTech Patreon -> https://www.patreon.com/BungleTechBungleTech Podcast Game Mode Collection - > https://1drv.ms/f/s!AiU1hP8RhYzUn5FwSg7PaYnHbJvm7QBungleTech Twitter/X -> BungleTechTweetSpecial LinksBattleTech Edition Comparison Analysis -> https://1drv.ms/x/c/d48c8511ff843525/EYf-Lfwy1qtIjchU3w9553YBQfGRZwvO4tz--lgjNZdmCQ?e=KmwCX9BattleTech Playtest Information -> https://battletech.com/playtest-battletech/Crab-Back 2025 -> https://www.extra-life.org/teams/72322KSAGG VI Information and Registration -> https://tabletop.events/conventions/ksagg-viSARNA Bad 'Mechs - > https://www.sarna.net/news/
In April of 2024, a group of aid workers were killed by Israeli Defense Forces while bringing food to Central Gaza. The IDF had alleged that its military analysts had identified a gunman on top of one of the trucks carrying supplies, suggesting it was a military vehicle, not an aid vehicle. In the online debate following the event, a familiar trope popped up: arguing over whether one of the aid trucks a Toyota Hilux. The reason? In military conflict around the globe, the Hilux is a familiar character. Whether you're a U.S. designated terrorist group, a "freedom fighter," or someone else involved in direct armed conflict, you probably know about the Hilux. Endless Thread wanted to know why, and how, this happened. So we took a journey beyond America's commercial pickup truck identity to understand why beyond our borders, the Hilux is the truck of choice.
