Shoot us a Text.Episode #1241: CarMax leans on price cuts and marketing to spark sales, Toyota takes its iconic Hilux electric in Europe, and Walmart keeps scaling drone delivery as demand grows.CarMax is shifting back to fundamentals as sales and earnings continue to slide. The company will cut prices, trim costs, and increase marketing to regain momentum heading into 2026.Q3 results saw unit sales down 8% and earnings down 50% year-over-year.CarMax will use targeted price cuts to spark demand, not blanket reductions. The company is lowering margins while boosting marketing to drive traffic.SG&A will be cut by $150M annually despite increased ad spend.“Our average selling prices have drifted upward and appear to be less attractive to customers,” said Interim CEO David McCreight.Toyota just electrified one of its most important global trucks. The Hilux made its first European appearance as a full EV, signaling Toyota's pickup electrification push—just not for North American buyers.Toyota debuted the Hilux BEV at the Brussels Motor Show, and uses a 59.2 kWh battery, offering up to 160 miles WLTP range, or 236 miles in city driving. With AWD and 473 Nm of torque, it can tow 1.6 tons and haul over 1,500 lbs, keeping its work-truck credibility.Europe gets the Hilux BEV in April, but the truck isn't sold in the U.S.—and Toyota isn't signaling that will change.Alphabet-owned Wing is dramatically expanding its on-demand drone partnership with Walmart, signaling that flying groceries and meds are becoming a real part of everyday commerce.Wing will expand drone delivery to 150 more Walmart stores, building on pilots in Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta.Wing's top 25% of customers order three times per week, mostly groceries like eggs, ground beef, produce, and snacks.Once complete, Wing will operate from 270+ Walmart locations, reaching roughly 10% of the U.S. population.Walmart remains Wing's primary commercial partner, even as the company continues testing larger drones capable of carrying five-pound payloads.Wing's new chief business officer Heather Rivera: “Volume is definitely powering our flywheel.”Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Warehouses have not changed much in 20 to 30 years, and even when businesses look modern from the outside, the reality behind the scenes is often chaos, spreadsheets, and a heap of decisions operators never expected to be making. In this episode, we sit down with Rob O'Dea from ShelfBot to unpack the real industry blockers that stop warehouses from taking the first step into automation, including fear of massive projects, over-engineered solutions, and the “consultant trap” of trying to solve 100% of the problem all at once. We talk about:Why complexity and integration risk (hello, SAP) can kill projects before they start The 80/20 mindset, and why chasing the last 20% can explode cost and complexity The human reality of picking, including the 10 to 15 km a day many pickers walk The hidden costs and safety risks people miss, including fire suppression and lithium-ion concerns If you're a manufacturer, 3PL, or e-commerce operator trying to scale without betting the business on a mega-project, this is a practical conversation about where to start, what to avoid, and how to reduce the fear factor.

In our thirtieth deployment of BungleTech, my spheroid self Michael will be running the show because my clanner co-host Nathan is away this month. But fortunately I am joined by our friend and frequent opponent Paul! A talented and well-traveled demo-agent who knows a thing or two about what it's like bringing new players into the game, and more importantly what kinds of bungles they make! Paul also shares with us a story of extremely rapid immolation on the battlefield and I will read a clip of the coolest ‘Mech jockey in the Old West. In this very patriotic episode, we're repping our home states and going head-to-head to settle once and for all: which Malaysian state reigns supreme? Is PJ just overpriced cafes and traffic? In April of 2024, a group of aid workers were killed by Israeli Defense Forces while bringing food to Central Gaza. The IDF had alleged that its military analysts had identified a gunman on top of one of the trucks carrying supplies, suggesting it was a military vehicle, not an aid vehicle. In the online debate following the event, a familiar trope popped up: arguing over whether one of the aid trucks a Toyota Hilux. The reason? In military conflict around the globe, the Hilux is a familiar character. Whether you're a U.S. designated terrorist group, a "freedom fighter," or someone else involved in direct armed conflict, you probably know about the Hilux. Endless Thread wanted to know why, and how, this happened. So we took a journey beyond America's commercial pickup truck identity to understand why beyond our borders, the Hilux is the truck of choice. What's the deal with diesel tuning? Is it really that different? Yes… But also no.This week Matt Smith of Just Autos joins us to discuss all things diesel tuning — operating principles, combustion temperature, reflash options, and a whole lot more.Use JUST50 to get $50 off HPA's Diesel Tuning Starter Package: https://hpcdmy.co/dieselstarterbJust Autos, based out of Queensland, Australia, specialises in diesel performance tuning — but perhaps not the platforms you're more familiar with. Matt has gone down the Japanese diesel path — specifically Toyota's Hilux, Prado, and Landcruiser platforms. These workhorses are common on Aussie roads, and Matt is at the very forefront of developing their stout Toyota diesel motors to get the absolute best performance from them. In this conversation, Matt tells us how he got into the business, and how it's changed and improved to become the very professional outfit it is today. We then jump into the real meat and potatoes of this episode — a very deep dive into the world of diesel engines and tuning. Matt takes the time to really go through how a diesel engine operates and how that differs from a petrol engine, as well as why we need fuel pulses, the general dos and don'ts of diesel tuning, controlling combustion temperatures, and the usefulness (or not) of exhaust gas temperature sensors in a diesel application. Matt is a great communicator and manages to get tech heavy without leaving the real world, so if you've always wanted to better understand diesel technology and how to get the absolute most performance out of it, this episode is a great place to start.Follow Matt here:IG: @justautosmechanicalFB: Just AutosYT: Just Autos MechanicalTKTK: justautosWWW: justdieselperfomance.com.auDon't forget, you can use JUST50 to get $50 off HPA's Diesel Tuning Starter Package: https://hpcdmy.co/dieselstarterbTimestamps:0:00 The Dos and Don'ts of Diesel Tuning.3:41 How did you become interested in cars?10:57 Are we losing key mechanical skills these days?15:30 What drove you towards the diesel world?22:48 How does a diesel engine work?26:15 Diesel engine timing.29:16 What is pilot injection for in a diesel engine?32:36 Diesel fuelling and tuning.40:12 EGTs on a diesel engine.50:47 Common rail diesel fuel pressure.54:19 Diesel fuel system failures.
