This WAIA Wednesday, the inspiring and incredibly thoughtful curator Olivia Miller discusses de Kooning's 'slashed' women, opportunities and challenges of working in a smaller city, the inspirational significance of women-led art organizations, the contextual power of a museum, the return to craft and fiber arts in this age of AI, and an artist's original intentions versus the ever-changing meaning of their work itself. Olivia Miller is the Interim Director and Curator at the University of Arizona Museum of Art (UAMA) where she has worked since 2012, curating or co-curating more than 30 exhibitions. She has contributed scholarship for exhibition catalogues and regularly presents her research at academic conferences. As an arts educator, she has taught at the University of Arizona's Humanities Seminars Program, the Arizona State Prison Complex, Osher Life-Long Learning Institute, and Pima Community College. Her most recent exhibition is Restored: The Return of Woman-Ochre, which traces the incredible story of Willem de Kooning's stolen, recovered, and recently conserved painting. She is currently co-curating a solo exhibition of Diné weaver and painter, Marlowe Katoney, which is supported by a grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art and will open at UAMA in October, 2023.

At the end of the show a question from Jim Anderson. Recommendations: Stuart: Beckham With never-before-seen footage, this docuseries follows David Beckham's meteoric rise from humble beginnings to global football stardom. https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81223488 Paddy: Cassius X Exploring the life of Cassius Clay as he undergoes his spiritual transformation as well as examining the evolution of his amazing boxing skills, this landmark film is structured around the early years of his boxing career between 1959 and 1964 when he turned professional and pursued his dream of becoming World Heavyweight Champion. From his first contact with the Nation of Islam to the moment when he is given the name Muhammad Ali, we reveal the events in America that would shape his beliefs and examine the figures such as Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X who would become his spiritual advisors. Featuring interviews with people with a direct connection to these moments in Ali's life, Cassius X: Becoming Ali examines the influences on Ali's awakenings with regard to owning his own identity - the Nation of Islam, integration vs. separation, and the thoughts and perspectives and beliefs he adopts. It is Ali's origin story - the definitive observation of the emergence of a hero https://www.screen.scot/film-in-scotland/made-in-scotland/film/cassius-x-becoming-ali The Thief Collector In 1985, Willem de Kooning's "Woman-Ochre," one of the most valuable paintings of the 20th century, was cut from its frame at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. 32 years later, the painting was found hanging in a New Mexico home. https://www.amazon.co.uk/placeholder_title/dp/B0B8HVPLRH Shona: Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World: Signed Edition (Hardback) What if you woke up one morning and found you'd acquired a double? Someone almost like you, and yet not you at all? When Naomi Klein discovered that a woman who shared her first name, but had radically different, harmful views, was getting chronically mistaken for her, it seemed too ridiculous to take seriously. Then suddenly it wasn't. She started to find herself grappling with a distorted sense of reality, becoming obsessed with reading the threats on social media, the endlessly scrolling insults from the followers of her doppelganger. Why had her shadowy other gone down such an extreme path? Why was identity – all we have to meet the world – so unstable? To find out, Klein decided to follow her double into a bizarre, uncanny mirror world: one of conspiracy theories, anti-vaxxers and demagogue hucksters, where soft-focus wellness influencers make common cause with fire-breathing far right propagandists (all in the name of protecting ‘the children'). In doing so, she lifts the lid on our own culture during this surreal moment in history, as we turn ourselves into polished virtual brands, publicly shame our enemies, watch as deep fakes proliferate and whole nations flip from democracy to something far more sinister. This is a book for our age and for all of us; a deadly serious dark comedy which invites us to view our reflections in the looking glass. It's for anyone who has lost hours down an internet rabbit hole, who wonders why our politics has become so fatally warped, and who wants a way out of our collective vertigo and back to fighting for what really matters. https://www.waterstones.com/book/doppelganger/naomi-klein/2928377214036

Allison Otto's so unbelievable it has to be true documentary, THE THIEF COLLECTOR, follows the brazen broad daylight theft of renown artist Willem de Kooning's landmark painting “Woman-Ochre,” in 1985. Considered to be one of the most valuable paintings of the 20th century, it vanished into the Arizona desert after being cut from its frame at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. Thirty-Two years later, the $160 million painting was found hanging in the home of Jerry and Rita Alter in rural New Mexico. THE THIEF COLLECTOR takes a deep look at how, and why, this mild-mannered couple pulled off one of the greatest art heists of a generation, exploring the complicated dynamics of family, the contours of criminality, and just how far people will go to weave their own grandiose narratives. Featuring Glenn Howerton (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Sarah Minnich (Army of the Dead) in the “heist re-enactment”. Director Allison Otto (The Love Bigs) stops by to talk about how she came to the project, following the wildly improbable story of retired school teachers and avid world travelers led her to New Mexico and a cryptic book, written by Jerry Alter that hints at multiple art heists and even more disturbing activities that the couple may have engaged in. What do we see when we look at our society through the lens of cultural institutions? How can we widen the lens to be more inclusive and reflective of the lived experiences of all in our communities? Chelsea Farrar and Russ Toomey join us for this conversation about 'Mapping Q', a community/university collaboration between LGBTQ youth, community organizations, and the University of Arizona Museum of Art (UAMA) to create safe and welcoming spaces for LGBTQ youth through artmaking while providing youth with the language, tools and voice to overcome societal discrimination and stigma, and expand LGBTQ artist representation in the art museum. The result is beautiful expression, and an invitation to expand our vision of ways of being. About Chelsea Farrar: Chelsea is the Curator of Community Engagement at the University of Arizona Museum of Art, and the creator of 'Mapping Q'. She has more than ten years' experience in teaching in museums, college, and K-12 classrooms. Her work with community engagement through the arts has included several award-winning community programs and exhibitions involving LGBTQ-youth, military families, and adults with disabilities. About Russ Toomey: Russ is Professor of Family Studies and Human Development in the Norton School of Human Ecology at the University of Arizona. He conducts research on the processes by which sexual and gender minority youth thrive and are resilient despite the oppressive barriers and challenges they encounter in society. His research identifies both the individual-level mechanisms (e.g., coping, activism) and systems-level policies (e.g., inclusive school policies) that reduce the impacts of discrimination and contribute to optimal health, well-being, and educational outcomes. I had Norah Diedrich on today, and she is going to be our new executive director running the Tucson Museum of Art, which we're very excited about. She's an interesting lady who has followed a unique and interesting path, as so many guests on this podcast have. When she was first involved with art, she thought she would be a fine artist. At one point she was showing her photographs in galleries, but ultimately found the path she has been following for most of her life, which was through the museum world.Fast forward to today and Norah's been the executive director of the Newport Art Museum in Newport, Rhode Island, for almost eight years. Now she's going to move to the Southwest and she's very excited about the potential and about what she can add to the museum. She understands just how important the diversification of a museum is, as well as the impact the interpretation of the art museum can have on the community.I'm very excited to welcome her to Tucson. This was an interesting and uniquely Art Dealer Diaries conversation about her journey and what we're going to get to expect from Norah Diedrich.

“I had heard the tale and knew what to expect, but it was by far the most damaged painting I had seen. When it arrived, it came into the studio and the damage was almost all that you could see.” In 2017 Willem de Kooning's painting Woman-Ochre returned to the University of Arizona Museum of Art (UAMA) more than 30 years after it had been stolen off the gallery walls. Because the theft and subsequent treatment of the work had caused significant damage, the UAMA enlisted the Getty Museum and Getty Conservation Institute to help repair the painting. When the work arrived at the Getty in 2019, the damage was so extreme that it was all paintings conservator Laura Rivers could see; prominent cracks and flaking paint obscured the artwork itself. Rivers worked alongside her colleague Douglas MacLennan, a conservation scientist who used advanced analytic methods like X-ray fluorescence and microfade testing to inform their conservation work. The results of their multi-year collaboration are finally on view in the exhibition Conserving de Kooning: Theft and Recovery. In this episode, Getty Museum conservator Laura Rivers and Getty Conservation Institute scientist Douglas MacLennan discuss their work conserving Woman-Ochre, which is on display at the Getty Center through August 28, 2022. He's had a lot of different jobs throughout his life, and when I say jobs I mean they were all museum or nonprofits type jobs.Mike has done great work for the likes of the Heard Museum, Museum of Northern Arizona, the Muhammad Ali Museum (an institution that he helped start in Louisville, Kentucky), and Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West. The last one is a fantastic museum and it's where I met Mike. I encourage people to go to it as I really believe in it and personally, I support it. Mike brought that museum to the forefront of the Western art museum scene and did a great deal to develop the museum in its infancy. Mike doesn't like to take credit for a lot of these things, but he is the impetus. It is an undeniable fact that he was a major player for many an institution, in Arizona especially. Not to mention he's met unique and interesting people along the way, like Sandra Day O'Connor and Muhammad Ali.I think you'll find this podcast very fascinating, especially if you've been to any of the museums that Mike was involved in forming/leading - or if you just enjoy museums in general. “We hear the security guards talking to one another on the walkie-talkie, saying that there's a man on the line saying that he has a stolen painting. And I wish somebody could've seen us, because we just stopped our conversation and Jill's eyes got big, and she said, ‘Oh, my gosh, are we gonna remember this moment for the rest of our lives.'” On the day after Thanksgiving in 1985, two thieves casually entered the University of Arizona Museum of Art (UAMA). They strolled out minutes later with Willem de Kooning's painting Woman-Ochre. Without security cameras or solid leads, the trail to find the stolen painting quickly went cold. In 2017, however, the artwork turned up in an unlikely place: a small antique shop in Silver City, New Mexico. After more than 30 years, the work was finally returned to the UAMA, but it was badly damaged, due to the way it was torn from its frame during the heist and how it was subsequently stored and handled. The UAMA turned to the Getty Museum and Conservation Institute to help conserve the painting. In this episode, UAMA curator of exhibitions Olivia Miller and Getty Museum senior conservator of paintings Ulrich Birkmaier discuss Woman-Ochre's theft, recovery, and conservation, as well as its place in de Kooning's oeuvre and the UAMA's collection. The treatment is still in progress, and the restored artwork is scheduled to be on view at the Getty Center from June 7 to August 28, 2022. She also built high-end spec homes and sold them in San Francisco but really found her calling in being an abstract painter. We get a different sensibility of somebody who's painting - not from a realistic standpoint - but a nonobjective one. I think anyone who likes art, whether it's traditional or contemporary, can take something away from this podcast about how you can find success and have a very successful career as an abstract painter. Critical yet humorous, Schmid’s work is luxuriantly colored, exquisitely wrought, and iconographically rich. Her prints quote from Europe’s Medieval and Renaissance print precedents, the medium’s traditions of social satire and arch political caricature (including Breugel, Hogarth, Goya and Daumier), contemporary journalism and sociology, feminist scholarship, graphic novels and various strains of popular culture – visual, musical and literary. Densely packed with symbols and language, the work traces the distant past to the immediate present with a wry humor that carries the sharp poke of contemporary critique. Sept. 18, 2008.

The resulting scientific and art historical research have unlocked 500-year-old secrets about the altarpiece’s creation and realization.

"Jenny Schmid: The Vistas of Gender Utopia," was an exhibition at the University of Arizona Museum of Art marking this exciting emerging printmaker’s first comprehensive solo museum presentation and monograph publication. Schmid’s “Gender Utopia” project explores notions of gender and liberty through images that fuse Old Master print precedents with a hip contemporary sensibility. Sept. 2008.

The University of Arizona Museum of Art welcomedAndrew Schulz, art history professor from the University of Oregon. Schulz, author of "Goya's Caprichos, Aesthetics, Perception and the Body," gave a lecture on Goya's Los Caprichos in conjunction with "Goya's Mastery in Prints: Los Caprichos," an exhibition currently on view at UAMA. By examining Goya’s Los Caprichos within the context of the artist's career and the intellectual climate of late 18th-century Spain, this lecture will consider how the artist’s contemporaries would have understood the print series and explore how we might understand it today.
