Join us for an exploration of art and materials in this interview Nathan Terborg, recorded at his solo exhibition at Galerie Benjamin Eck in Munich. Nathan skillfully transforms found objects into thought-provoking art pieces. Discover how his early experiences in his grandfather's woodshop influenced his artistic journey, leading him away from traditional painting towards an immersive sculptural practice. Nathan dives into the essence of experimentation, stressing how the relationship between artist and materials is foundational to creating meaningful work. Nathan's approach of curiosity and discovery emphasizes that artistic freedom resides in the acceptance of imperfection and the willingness to explore beyond the surface. The conversation also highlights the importance of communication through art, with Nathan referencing the impactful words of Louise Bourgeois. This insight showcases the intrinsic value of art as an unspoken language that connects both the creator and observer. By drawing from personal anecdotes and professional insights, Nathan inspires listeners to reconsider their interactions with materials and art forms. As he encourages audiences to engage with sculptures tactually, he elucidates the transformative potential hidden within the discarded. We dive into the artist's struggle and the high cost of idealism, emphasizing the need for lifelong learning and self-education beyond the structured confines of art school. Uncover how embracing curiosity and self-education can prevent stagnation and nurture continuous artistic growth. As artists, are we just chasing shadows, or is there more to be gleaned from completed artworks? We explore the dynamic between artists and critics, sparking a debate on the utility of viewing finished works. By drawing insights from figures like Jerry Saltz, we discuss the contrasting views where artists see art as an ever-evolving process while critics often view it as a fixed entity. Henry James's questions for evaluating art prompt us to reflect on the value and impact of artistic pursuits, urging artists to break free from traditional constraints and embrace the uncertainty that fuels true innovation and autonomy. Finally, we delve into the divine spark that drives creativity, encouraging artists to trust their instincts and make bold conceptual leaps. This journey requires leaving behind comfort zones to pursue greater expression, as exemplified by historical movements that challenged norms. Ainsley Burrows: Multidisciplinary Artist from Kingston, JamaicaIn this episode, I sit down with Ainsley Burrows, a multidisciplinary artist originally from Kingston, Jamaica, and now based in Baltimore. Ainsley's groundbreaking methodologies, including NeoChaos and Raktism, have established him as a powerful voice in abstract art. During our conversation, Ainsley shared how he channels untold stories and emotions through various mediums—poetry, music, performance, and painting. Starting his journey as a self-taught artist in 2009, he began working with acrylics and developed his unique visual language through dedicated practice and research. Ainsley's artistic roots lie in his success as a poet and novelist, and his literary foundation continues to influence his abstract works. He fully immersed himself in painting during the pandemic, leading to his first solo exhibition in 2022. His work has since been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and is held in several private collections. The Third Future: A Self-Portrait - Ainsley Burrows Solo ExhibitionPart of the Peak Artists Exhibition Series at The Top Of The World Observation Level's Gallery In The Sky, "The Third Future: A Self-Portrait" features Burrows' latest body of work. This exhibition, which opened on September 12 and runs through November 18, explores the concept of the 'Third Future,' a limitless realm of creative possibility where Burrows captures the essence of his experiences through abstract portraiture. The exhibition reflects his belief that art can serve as a voice for those who are often overlooked or silenced, advocating for the 'small man' and those who rarely find representation in high spaces. What if the pandemic was the catalyst for uncovering hidden talents? Join me as I sit down with Tom Delamater, an extraordinary abstract artist who discovered his passion for painting during these tumultuous times. Tom shares how his father's legacy as a skilled draftsman and illustrator shaped his artistic vision, and how his experience in publication design and advertising sharpened his eye for color, balance, and composition. Get ready to be inspired by Tom's journey from creating a simple housewarming gift to becoming the featured artist at my new studio this September.Imagine finding solace in art during a prolonged business trip. That's exactly what happened to Tom in the spring of 2021. Trapped in a hotel room, he channeled his energy into painting, inspired by Jackson Pollock's abstract expressionism. With no formal training and only basic supplies from Walmart, he created 50 paintings in just a few months. This personal story highlights the power of embracing new challenges without fear of failure and encourages others to begin their own artistic journeys, no matter their starting point. In this heartfelt episode, we explore the serendipitous nature of artistic discovery and the enduring influence of family legacies. From the accidental innovation of a drip technique to Tom's father's unwavering dedication to his craft, we discuss how unforeseen events and familial inspiration can shape an artist's path. Tom's touching narrative about his father's resilience in the face of rejection serves as a powerful reminder to honor our roots and pursue our passions with unrelenting determination. What happens when an artist's "unit" of work is rooted in "trouble"? Join us as we explore this fascinating concept through the insights of Amy Sillman, uncovered in an enlightening Art21 episode. We dive into the gripping narrative of how tension and contradiction can be both a hurdle and a muse, shaping the creative grammar that artists use to articulate their vision. By reflecting on Sillman's methodology and the wisdom of experienced artists, we uncover the power of understanding and defining our own unique artistic foundations.Have you ever thought about the intimate relationship between an artist and their materials? Our journey continues as we traverse the dynamic landscape of artistic mediums, from the smell of fresh paint to the thrill of finding the perfect object in a thrift store. We emphasize the importance of experimentation, pushing boundaries, and feeling the materials in your hands. Like relationships tested through trials and imperfections, the artist's connection to their mediums evolves, leading to unexpected innovations and a renewed passion for creation. Can embracing imperfections in your work actually propel you forward? We wrap up by reflecting on the significance of documentation and the evolution of one's artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from unconventional tools and the stories of transforming unsold pieces, we highlight the beauty of unpredictable art-making. His heart lies within the animal kingdom and our consumption of their environments, which impacts him deeply and the psychology of this is a reflection of this. The podcast discusses his series of polar bear portraits from the 2021 series The King without a Kingdom and how Per captures emotional response through his selection of material and media.  His approach to a reductive painting style enables the characterisation of his chosen animal to be simplified within the composition which  provides an emotional intensity in his painting. Current works from the To The Ark series are exhibited at the Nordic Art Agency gallery during the Summer Exhibition and a solo exhibition of Per Ekros's painting will be held in the gallery from September 21st - November 16th 2024.

Her oil paintings address the tension of urban landscape and the natural world. Inspired by frequent walks through various trails and open spaces in California, her work reveals her observations of the changes and dynamics of nature in the face of the ongoing climate crisis. Engaging notions of abstraction, her work references the surrounding landscape using atmospheric color shifts, fragmented imagery and multiple viewpoints to suggest the ideas of flux, change and instability in the environment. Marie taught painting and color theory at CSULB for 30 years, where she developed an Advanced Studies in Color class.June is a recipient of the COLA Fellowship, the Guggenheim and the California Community Foundation, Fellowship for Visual Artists.  June uses abstract painting to explore how color, repetition, movement, and balance can serve as conduits to spiritual contemplation and interpersonal connection to her African-American roots. Exploring the psychological construct of skin color or tone through pattern and abstract painting has proven to be a revealing gesture and these ideas are explored in her two ongoing series: the Energy Wheel Paintings inspired by her meditation practice and her Flag Paintings, which explore the alignment of multiple identities such as race, nationality, gender, or political leanings.  June's public art works include a Venetian glass mosaic at the Metro Pacific Station in Long Beach Influences: Marie has two main influences: first, the New York abstract school where her formalist abstract artist teachers were students of the pivotal figure in Abstract Expressionism, Hans Hoffman. That experience that has always remained with her. Second, were her teachers Elmer Bishoff and Joan Brown at Berkeley, members of the "second generation" of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. Marie always loved the California painting of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and the landscape expanse.June's influences include Varnette Honeywood, Romare Beardon, Jacob Lawrence, Charles White, David Hockney and Alma Thomas. Another influence was the 1976 LACMA show ‘Two Centuries of Black American Art.' These works had a profound, formative impact upon June. Other inspiration/explorations have drawn from cultural and African American historical references, sacred geometry and very recently, the Benin emblem of the river leaf.Find more information at: www.mariethibeault.com  and www.luisdejesus.com/artists/june-edm

Have you ever watched an artist wrestle with their inner demons as they try to capture something ethereal on the canvas? It's this very struggle between ego and insecurity that we unravel in our latest episode, where we uncover how artists balance confidence with vulnerability. We discuss the critical role of ego—not as a symbol of arrogance but as a beacon of assurance—and how this impacts an artist's interaction with the art world. Join us and a panel of artists as we share candid experiences of wrestling with self-doubt, all while boldly owning the title of 'artist' with pride and authenticity. This episode also peels back the layers of complex emotions tied to visibility and recognition in the art world. Imagine the double-edged sword of yearning for acclaim, while simultaneously standing naked to public critique—it's a vulnerability we all know too well, but one that can lead to growth. We navigate the art of celebrating personal achievements, leaning on the strength of a supportive community, and managing the green-eyed monster of jealousy with grace. Our guests open up about the transformative power of encouragement and how fostering connectivity elevates not just individual artists, but the entire creative ecosystem. Finally, we take you on a journey to the seclusion and inspiration of artist residencies like Pooch Cove, where the environment shapes spirit and practice. Through personal stories, we reflect on how spaces like these can catalyze profound shifts in artistic perspectives, illustrated by our own encounters with the vastness of nature and a community that feels like an instant family. What does it mean when a piece of art “has it”? When you hear people say, “I get it”? To someone who doesn't understand abstract art, it can feel like everyone else is speaking a language you don't — but I'm here to break down what makes abstract art great. The truth is, abstract art is about so much more than technique and skill. They're important, sure, but there's something much greater at play. It all comes down to doing the inside work before you get to work on the canvas. It's about sharing the message that only you can share!  That's what can make abstract art speak directly to people — even when there's nothing “physical” represented on the canvas. But how can you, as an artist, tap into your most-important message and share it on a canvas? That's what I'll be talking about in this episode,  Make sure to subscribe to this podcast so you don't miss a thing! And don't forget to come hang with me on Instagram @jodie_king_. If you haven't discovered the music from Austin Meade, this podcast should intrigue you to listen.  The Texas native has established himself as a story-driven songwriter whose latest album Abstract Art of an Unstable Mind showcases his work.  Blackout is Austin Meade's single that debuted on the Rock 30 late 2023.  According to Austin, the inspiration came to him after attending a Jelly Roll showcase.  He received the VIP treatment and and as he put it, "I'm having a good time until I'm not."  With a passion for cinematic narratives, the video pays homage to the film Fight Club.  I met Austin Meade at The Haute Spot in Cedar Park, TX several months ago.  Austin's Dad made sure that the meeting happened as he has been very influential in helping expand the awareness of his brand and music.  Austin will share some great stories on the powerful influence his father has had on him since day one!

There's nothing quick and easy about abstract expressionist art.  We MUST avoid falling into the trap of thinking that our most honest art can come in “5 minutes or less.” This isn't a hot and ready pizza — this is FINE art.  Still, staring at a blank canvas can get frustrating. But that rut may be because you're making one of the 10 mistakes I'm sharing in this episode. While major summer festival announcements are coming in fast and furious, I dig deep into the Roadcase Vault and dream of warm summer days with four previously unreleased in-person interviews I did at last year's Lollapalooza 2023 featured on this week's episode.First up is Texas rocker and legendary road dog Austin Meade who is now a new Dad, having welcomed his son into the world shortly after I spoke to him, and is just coming off a major North American Fall tour in support of Dirty Honey. His most recent album, Abstract Art of an Unstable Mind, sets a high bar for creative exploration in the rock genre.Next, I had a super fun conversation with Chicago-native Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer. Having begun her journey in pursuit of a career in dentistry, Deanna explains to me how she quickly discovered that the straight route was just not for her. Solo gigs quickly became a full band effort and Deanna talks to me about her personal and quirky lyrical style in full display on Sincere Engineer's latest album, Cheap Grills. In the third slot, I talk to Danny Davis of Husbands who is no stranger to change. Recently, he parted ways with his longtime collaborator and bandmate, Will Norton, quit his job as a software engineer to pursue music full-time, and moved to Costa Rica. Danny talks to me about how happy he is to have managed to create a new life for himself while doing what he loves. Husbands' latest album, Cuatro, is a testament to the power of change and the pitfalls therein.Lastly, I spoke to Axel Ellis, Hunter Olshefke, and Sal Defilippis of Ax and the Hatchetmen. These young Chicago-natives are  Lollapalooza rookies and talk to me about what that means having grown up fans of their massive hometown festival. Exciting things are yet to come for this enthusiastic and tight-knit group as they continue to turn on their fans with their infectious energy. For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Phantom Electric Ghost Interviews Joanna Barbolla: Self-published Author, Artist, Designer, Corporate Executive, Educator Tell us about your new book DIVULGE D'VINO Biography Self-published Author, Artist, Designer, Corporate Executive and now Educator specializing in Elementary Education, my journey has been a plethora of learning, creativity and self-discovery. After working in NYC's Corporate America for 30 years, as a single NYer, Covid hit and destroyed my career, so I decided to relocate to Florida for a fresh start and and a second career in teaching. While both rewarding and challenging, I never gave up on my first love of WINE & ART ! I've been a self-taught Abstract Expressionist for nearly 15 years and found painting to be the most calming and creative hobby a woman can have! After creating hundreds of paintings, I designed a course in Art Therapy for students of all ages to use different forms of artistic expression to help explore and transform feelings, thoughts and ideas, as well as process emotional issues to facilitate healing and well-being. This type of painting was my ultimate practice in self-care. I wanted to give back to my readers and introduce them to my Art Therapy images in DIVULGE D'VINO so they may experience the wonderful health benefits of painting and creating art as I did for several years... I also spent several years in the wine business in NYC and attended many trade events, tastings and classes. My experience left me with an abundance of knowledge of wines from around the globe and I needed to share my newly acquired wine wisdom with the world...and that's when I started my weekly wine blog DIVULGE D'VINO! My readers loved it and found it to be wonderful tidbits of information on wines and food pairings and an incredible escape from the mundane....And how can you have a wonderful full-bodied glass of red without picking up your palette knife and start creating..?!! This was exactly how DIVULGE D'VINO was born! A sensually charged, passionate and sizzling page turner filled with emotions and gusto by bringing together the very best of both worlds, luscious WINES & unique one-of-a-kind ABSTRACT ART !
