What if chasing your dreams and confronting your fears are two sides of the same coin? Join us on a journey through the intricate dance of art and fear. We unveil the tightrope artists walk between ambition and dread, sharing personal stories and insights on how external expectations and internal critics can often hijack our creative instincts. With a nod to Agnes Martin's studio rituals and Andrew Wyeth's secretive Helga series, we discuss how action and routine can triumph over fear, creating a safe space for authentic artistic expression. The creative process is often a battlefield between personal vision and external validation. We explore this tension and offer a roadmap for minimizing distractions in our tech-driven world. By examining Helen Frankenthaler's patience-first approach to art and the pitfalls of chasing trends, we illuminate the importance of following one's heart amidst the noise. Whether through the lens of cinema's slow storytelling or the raw truth in self-directed growth, the conversation highlights the significance of focusing on the art itself rather than fleeting social media approval. As we navigate the emotional highs and lows of the artistic journey, we celebrate the vital role of community and collaboration. Drawing inspiration from historical art movements and the camaraderie among fellow creators, we emphasize the power of artist friendships. Listen as we share how genuine relationships can inspire creativity and foster healthy competition. Our discussion also touches on the strategic use of social media, encouraging artists to journal their progression with intention, and reminding us that the joy of creation and problem-solving lies at the heart of every artist's path.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg
https://Art2Life.com - In this special throwback episode of Art2Life, we revisit one of our most beloved conversations with award-winning art critic Jerry Saltz. Making art is hard enough, but hearing from others whether it is good or not is especially so. Every artist I know already has, hard-wired within them, a pretty tough critic. I certainly do. So I never have been particularly drawn to listening to more of them. I know, of course, art criticism is essential in the art world. I get all that, but truthfully, I have always been a little leery of outside criticism in case it made me stop making art. It feels safer to hear more from those who are actually making art. They were the ones I thought whose voices mattered. At least for me. But today you are going to meet an art critic. But not the kind I imagined. Not at all. His name is Jerry Saltz. He is the Pulitzer Prize-winning, senior art critic and columnist for New York Magazine. He has a bajillion followers on Instagram and is a New York Times bestselling author. He also cares a ton about art and especially artists. Which isn't surprising because he was one. He switched mid-career because, ironically, his inner critic wouldn't leave him alone, and it all became too much. Jerry is whip-smart, funny, and at times, daringly truthful. But this is what I love about him: he just tells the truth. Or rather his truth. That is rare these days. Jerry is the artist's art critic. He is so on our side and wants nothing more for us than to simply stay together and above all else, to keep making our art. In this episode of The Craft, Carter and Colby discuss one of their favorite creative books, Austin Kleon's Steal Like an Artist. They explore the book's central concept: the importance and freedom of creating within an artistic tradition and community (i.e. stealing!). As Picasso said and Kleon notes, "Art is theft." They discuss multiple topics within the book such as exploring your craft's genealogy, acknowledging the lifestyle of a project, and developing a habit of patient work. Good morning everybody! Thank you for tuning in. I'm your host, Dean Booty. Today we have a book review and it is called "Steal Like an Artist" by Austin Kleon. An inspiring guide to creativity in the digital age, Steal Like an Artist presents ten transformative principles that will help readers discover their artistic side and build a more creative life. Nothing is original, so embrace influence, school yourself through the work of others, remix, and reimagine to discover your own path. Follow interests wherever they take you—what feels like a hobby may turn into your life's work. Forget the old cliché about writing what you know: Instead, write the book you want to read, make the movie you want to watch. And finally, stay Smart, stay out of debt, and risk being boring in the everyday world so that you have the space to be wild and daring in your imagination and your work. Hope you like this episode. “I never thought I would be an abstract artist. I have found that the catalyst for abstract art is internal. I stopped searching for subjects to paint and looked within and discovered an infinite universe.” Artist Michelle Sakhai believes and trusts in the energy of the creative spirit as a healing force on the earth. Michelle conveys this valuable message of healing through her art and her words in this compilation of her recent body of abstract paintings. Sakhai's extensive world travels, which began at an early age, and her mixed heritage have shaped her as an artist. With both Persian and Japanese roots, Michelle's art derives influences from both cultures. Michelle Sakhai received a Bachelor of Arts degree with high honors from Hofstra University. She went on to receive her Masters in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. She has studied in Venice, Italy, and at d'Arts Plastique I Disseny in Barcelona, Spain with the School of Visual Arts. Michelle also traveled to France to study at the Marchutz Academy of Fine Art in Aix en Provence. Sakhai currently works and resides in New York City while continuing to travel the world. Nik Cartwright joins us this week as we feed an AI 100's of pickup artist books and let it write it's own.
In Part 2 of Nick's interview with Enrique Chagoya, they do a deep dive into his art. They discuss the history of the codex book format, dating back to pre-columbian times, and why it's a relevant format for Chagoya's art. If you recall, it was a lithographic codex that was vandalized in Loveland, Colorado, and we recounted the entire incident in Part 1 of this interview. We go on to talk about appropriation and specifically artists who create art on top of other artists' work. Chagoya calls prints unique multiples, which implies they possess a similar aura like that of unique works of art. The artist shares how he maintains work-life balance, why meditation helps his daily life, and how he keeps going with a busy teaching and art career.

How to Self-Publish an Artist Book
Illustrator and designer Kingsley Nebechi joins me to discuss the release of his debut artist book, the wonderful post-apocalyptic illustrated Tribe Hunters. Kingsley’s fascinating journey involved a move from his native Italy to London at the age of fourteen and he’ll tell us all about the challenges he faced, possessing only a very basic grasp of the English language before thriving and embracing the sink or swim nature of the English high school and the cultural differences. We recount our first meetings through Twitter, when Kingsley came across my angry blog and we connected because whilst my freelance lifestyle ramblings resonated with him, he feared it was getting to me a little too much! We find out why Kingsley’s mother’s notepad doodles during phone calls influenced him during childhood and became subtle foundations in the beautiful patterns seen throughout Tribe Hunters. He also tells us why thoughts become things if you believe in the work you’re doing and work hard, how he landed a job with his dream client and favourite creative agency I Love Dust following a degree in Portsmouth and why London’s Liverpool Street being so busy isn’t such a bad thing if you use it creatively! Kingsley Nebechi’s story shows us why life’s challenges and changes can instil a fierce resolve and work ethic and details a fantastic example of self-publishing success that anyone with aspirations of comic book work, character design or storytelling must hear. http://kingsleynebechi.co.uk - Kingsley official http://twitter.com/kingsleynebechi - Kingsley’s Twitter http://instagram.com/kingsleynebechi - Kingsley’s Instagram http://ilovedust.com - iLoveDust

From England with Love, İsmail Saray is the culmination of a comprehensive, two-year research comprising an intensive archival process and an in-depth collaboration with the artist. This long-overdue survey began with the process of assembling and securing the complete archive of the artist, as well as unearthing various artworks kept by Saray's fellow artists. In collaboration with Saray, SALT has reproduced several lost works and assembled an archive of materials related to his practice. Interviews with artists, collaborators, as well as friends' and students' of Saray have been conducted in an attempt to shape an oral history for further research.
