Is universal expansion slowing? What is the Bubble Universe Theory? Will we control AI, or will AI control us? In this special Chuck GPT episode of The LIUniverse, we answer questions from the Annual Global Summit in Erie, Pennsylvania where Dr. Charles Liu gave a talk on “2050 - The Future of Humanity.” To help ask those questions, Chuck and co-host Allen Liu welcome Stacey Severn, our Social Media Manager/Community Director; and physics student Eleanor Adams, our first intern. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, suggested by Stacey: the recent discovery of one of the most distant and earliest known galaxies observed, existing just 570 million years after the Big Bang. It's got a supermassive black hole 20 times the mass of ours and was found via gravitational lensing by the Canadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS) using the James Webb Space Telescope. Then it's time for the main event. Eleanor reads the first Erie audience question from William W., age 13, who asks, “In Bubble Universe Theory, is the force splitting universes apart the same force causing the expansion of the universe, also known as dark energy?” Chuck explains Bubble Universe Theory, aka “Eternal Inflation,” and then how dark energy is different than the forces that cause expansion. Next question: “Have you seen the latest research from South Korea stating universal expansion is actually slowing, thus reducing greatly the amount of dark matter? If it's correct, what are the implications?” Chuck explains the current state of research around the issue, starting with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey at the Kitt Peak National Observatory telescope. DESI gave indications of a change in the amount of dark energy being produced; this new study raises questions about how we measure the expansion of the universe using type 1a Supernova. Next question: “What percentage of our global warming does science attribute to man-created activities vs. a natural progression? Even though the world is getting warmer, wouldn't it be worse if the temperature were getting colder?” Chuck looks at the natural progression of the increase of carbon dioxide and compares it with the larger and more rapid increase in CO2 levels since the Industrial Revolution began. As to whether warming or cooling is better, Allen says that while it's a question of magnitude, neither extreme is desirable. Mark M's question is next: “Will we achieve control or effective management of AI, or will it control, or even define, our daily lives? Allen, whose book on AI is coming out soon, says the answer is far from clear cut. He explains that while there are many efforts to ensure we maintain control, there's no guarantee that we'll succeed. Next question from Erie: “How do we prepare our young children to be successful in the Age of AI?” Eleanor talks about how, like social media, you can't stop or avoid AI, but also, like social media, parents can give their children the tools to help them use it. Next: “Many advanced countries have declining populations, while third world countries are gaining population. How do we get tomorrow's scientific leaders from third world education systems?” Chuck says the best way to ensure an ongoing stream of scientific leaders is for advanced countries to continue to welcome immigrants, while Allen points out it is also important to improve the educational systems and opportunities for research in those third world countries. Stacey reminds us about the impact the internet is having on this issue. With time running out, we squeeze in one last question from Erie: “How can the average person influence science policy in a positive direction?” Our consensus answer: people need to participate, speak out, and support others when they do, too. V tej zgodbi mladenič porabi ves denar da reši psa, mačka in kačona pred smrtjo. Oče ga zaradi tega izžene, a živali mu ostanejo zveste. Kačon razkrije, da je sin radže in mladeniča povabi v čudežno deželo, kjer ga čaka nagrada za njegovo dobroto. Tatjana Ažman letos praznuje trideset let ustvarjanja v SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana, kjer je leta 2015 prejela naziv priznane dramaturginje za področje opere in baleta. Je osebnost številnih teatroloških vlog, saj gledališče raziskuje in soustvarja v najrazličnejših dimenzijah. Njeno delo povezuje teorijo, dramatiko, pedagoško delo in kulturno diplomacijo, spremljajo pa ga razgledanost, predanost in mednarodna prepoznavnost. V prvem delu oddaje smo se z gostjo pogovarjali o njeni dramaturški poti in delu v matični operni hiši pa tudi nalogah in poslanstvu dramaturginje.

Tudi letos so arheološka najdišča po Ljubljani razkrila nekaj skrivnosti, ki so bile pokrite s stoletji in tisočletji nenehnih sprememb in preureditev v krajinah podzemlja, površja in podnebja. Tako so arheologi med izkopavanji na arheološkem najdišču ob Centru Janez Levca naleteli na nenavaden pokop odraslega moškega, ki ga je usoda dohitela v zadnjih izdihljajih zadnjega stoletja pred začetkom našega štetja. Identifikacija skeleta s presenetljivimi pridatki iz obdobja zgodovinskega preloma arheologe spravlja v zadrego, saj bi mu radi določili socialni status, ga umestili med staroselce, Kelte, prišleke ali popotnike, najbolj pa jih zanima, kdo je bil pokojnik, zakaj je moški umrl in kako se je to zgodilo. Ne glede na to, s kašnimi izzivi se ubadajo poznavalci življenj minulih svetov, pa je enigmatična najdba našla prostor v Zakladnici Mestnega muzeja Ljubljana, v kateri bo še nekaj časa na ogled razstava Usoda neznanca s Prul. Zavod za gozdove Slovenije vsako leto podeli priznanja za najbolj skrbne lastnike gozdov. Letos je prejemnik tega priznanja tudi Nadškofija Ljubljana. V oddaji je bil z nami Franc Pogačnik, upravnik gozdov Nadškofije Ljubljana. Z njim smo se pogovarjali o izzivih in načrtih pri gospodarjenju.

Ste se kdaj vprašali, zakaj kruh sčasoma otrdi, piškoti pa postanejo mehki? In zakaj se nikoli ne dogovorijo za menjavo vlog? V prazničnem uredništvu Radiovednih so zaradi ene same uganke odložili kekse in odhiteli na teren. Grafični bienale Ljubljana, ki je ob nastanku leta 1955 Ljubljano postavil na svetovni zemljevid, pozneje pa se je dolgo soočal s težavami, pogosto povezujemo s politiko gibanja neuvrščenih. Jugoslavija je veljala za nekakšen most med Zahodom in Vzhodom, likovna umetnost pa je bila v očeh odločevalcev priročen vzvod mehke diplomacije. Med razlogi za uspeh pa sta še odločitev soustanoviteljev Zorana Kržišnika in Božidarja Jakca za grafiko kot bolj prenosljiv in demokratičen medij, ki je bil tedaj v skokovitem razvoju, ter Kržišnikovo spretno mreženje. A to je bilo v veliki meri usmerjeno na Zahod, kar je ob ideji neuvrščenosti kot vmesne poti nekoliko presenetljivo. Da je zgodovina bienala bolj kompleksna, kot si morda mislimo, priča zbornik 70 let Grafičnega bienala Ljubljana, ki sta ga uredila Nevenka Šivavec in Gregor Dražil. Ta je v pogovoru razprl pogled v zgodbo bienala – med drugim tudi v dolgo zgodovino težav, ki so leta 2001 vodile v spremembo pristopa in uvedbo kuratorskega principa.

Iz cerkve Vseh svetih v župniji Ljubljana-Sveti križ neposredno prenašamo slovesno polnočno sveto mašo. Mašuje župnik Peter Možina. Pri maši sodeluje Mešani pevski zbor pod vodstvom Nine Novec in Jakova Reiča.

Konec novembra je minilo 50 let od odprtja glavne stavbe Kliničnega centra Ljubljana, ki se je pozneje preimenoval v Univerzitetni klinični center Ljubljana. Danes je med največjimi bolnišnicami v srednji Evropi z izjemnimi medicinskimi dosežki. Zdaj ga prenavljajo in dograjujejo, skupna vrednost del je 250 milijonov evrov. Toda po drugi strani pomanjkanje kadra, predvsem negovalnega, hromi delo. O izzivih naše največje bolnišnice v tokratnem ponovljenem Studiu ob 17.00. Gostje: dr. Danes v oddaji predstavljamo koncert z naslovom Pesmi norosti, s katerim se je sklenila letošnja sezona cikla Harmonia Concertans – Stara glasba na Novem trgu. V Ljubljani smo spremljali festival Forum nove glasbe, v Novi Gorici pa 10. mednarodno tekmovanje klasičnega saksofona SAXGO25. V Mariboru so uprizorili opero Razcvet Vita Žuraja, v SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana pa je premiero doživel balet Slika Doriana Graya. Obiskali smo tudi koncert pri Gospe Sveti na Avstrijskem Koroškem in koncert Orkestrskega cikla Narodnega doma Maribor, kjer je prvič gostoval Simfonični orkester Zahodnonemškega radia iz Kölna. Poročamo tudi o dogajanju na ljubljanski Akademiji za glasbo, kjer je potekal mednarodni simpozij z naslovom Glasba za spodbujanje zdravja in blagostanja.

Prehranska podpora in prehranska terapija morata biti skrbno premišljeni, slediti morata strokovnim smernicam in temeljiti na posameznikovih izvidih. Danes je zadnji dan, ko lahko stanovalci domov za starejše oddajo soglasje za prevedbo v nov sistem dolgotrajne oskrbe. S ponedeljkom namreč začenja veljati pravica do dolgotrajne oskrbe v domovih. Domovi za starejše soglasja oddajajo na vstopno točko na Center za socialno delo Ljubljana, kjer bodo izvedli prevedbo za vseh skoraj 20 tisoč stanovalcev domov. Natančnih podatkov, koliko so jih prejeli, še nimajo, saj soglasja prihajajo ves čas. Menijo pa, da jih je več kot 17 tisoč in da se bo večina odločila za prevedbo v nov sistem. V tega bodo vstopili, ko bodo v domu za starejše podpisali še osebni načrt. Nekaj drugih poudarkov oddaje: - Novi vladni ukrepi zaostrujejo nadzor nad bolniškimi odsotnostmi, morali pa bi se ukvarjati z razlogi zanje, menij sindikati - Premier Golob in nemški kancler Merz na srečanju v Nemčiji za pravičen mir v Ukrajini. - V povezavi s smrtonosnim požarom, ki je zajel sedem stolpnic v Hongkongu, prijeli več ljudi. - Nagrado Maruše Krese za najboljše kratke zgodbe leta na knjižnem sejmu prejela Ana Svetel.

Do deset odstotkov otrok ima težave z branjem. Te težave vplivajo tudi na slabšo uspešnost pri vseh šolskih predmetih. Pri blažje izraženih težavah je otrok v šoli manj uspešen, a še izpolnjuje minimalne standarde znanja. Kako torej pomagati otrokom z učnimi težavami? Kako prepričati najmlajše, da bi izboljšali branje, in na kakšen način jim približati svet literature? Oktober je mesec požarne varnosti, v katerem gasilci in gasilke ozaveščajo o pomenu preprečevanja požara in ravnanja ob požaru. These two areas together form some sort of fire engineering method, which I strongly believe will be an important part of our profession in the future. Today I got to sit down with Dr. Pascale Vacca from UPC to unpack a practical, end-to-end framework for wildland–urban interface risk that engineers can use today, which she has shared in her keynote at the ESFSS Conference in Ljubljana earlier this year. From mapping hazard, exposure, and vulnerability across scales to chaining wildfire spread outputs into building-focused simulations, we show how careful modeling turns uncertainty into a plan communities can fund and maintain.We begin with risk assessment that respects terrain, fuels, and construction typologies, then translate FARSITE's rate of spread and fireline intensity into FDS boundary conditions to test real weaknesses—like heat flux and breakage in large glazed facades. The case study in Barcelona grounds it all: what happens when wind pushes a fast front toward a community center, and which retrofits move the needle? Noncombustible shutters, smarter venting, and defensible spacing emerge as high-ROI fixes, while fuel breaks and fuel treatments reduce intensity so crews can act. Along the way, we tackle data resolution, moisture, and weather selection—how to choose between worst case and representative scenarios and why that choice matters for policy and budgets.Preparedness and recovery complete the cycle. Annual maintenance keeps gains from eroding as vegetation regrows; community preparedness days build habits and trust; and a homeowner app scores parcel risk to make decisions concrete. On the response side, precomputed scenarios and quick wildfire modeling inform shelter-in-place versus evacuation, aligning engineering insight with operational realities. We also confront limits: validation gaps, ember exposure, and the fact that risk is never zero. Obrambni izdatki nikakor nočejo z jedilnika, kar pomeni, da še kako vplivajo nanj. Zato o Parlamentarni skupščini Nata, ki jo je gostila Ljubljana. Podrobnosti, tudi ustreznejša poročanja o dogodku, najdete v običajnih medijih, kot analitična avantgarda pa se spoprimimo z eno samo mislijo generalnega sekretarja. Takole je sporočil članicam in njihovim državljanom: "3,5 odstotka BDP potrebujemo, da bomo ohranili Atlantik, Arktiko, Evropo in ZDA varne." Takole je rekel – in kdo smo mi, da bi dvomili o njegovih besedah. Ali namenih, če smo že pri tem. Ampak samo zaradi informativne vloge nacionalnega medija razčistimo nekaj dilem … Da ohranimo omenjene pokrajine varne, pomeni, da jih obranimo pred sovražnikom. Sovražnik, tako generalni sekretar, ima očitno velike apetite po Atlantiku, Arktiki, Evropi in ZDA. Za varnost teh področij, območij in držav bo šel naš denar. Slovenci nismo naivni, predvsem pa ne brezglavo razsipni, da ne bi poskusili nekaj prišparati … Pod dva odstotka, kot dajemo zdaj, se zdi sprejemljivo, tako da moramo samo nekoliko oklestiti pri treh ali štirih postavkah, pa spustimo odstotke do današnje vrednosti. Šparovnost je lepa čednost in na prvi pogled se zdi, da bi najlažje prišparali pri Arktiki. Pustimo vnemar, da pri pešajočem javnem šolstvu zadnje generacije volivcev ne ločijo več natančno med Arktiko in Antarktiko – po podobni analogiji, kot se mešata Iran in Irak. In bi se verjetno Slovenija in Slovaška, če po naključju ne bi živeli v eni od obeh. Kakorkoli. Arktika se zdi zelo zelo oddaljena, ampak kot članica Nata smo zavezani braniti vse, kar brani Nato. Zdaj: morski levi, tjulnji in nekaj Eskimov se zdijo za slovenski braniteljski potencial precej abstraktna zadeva, ampak glede prihrankov se moramo vprašati, kdo je na Arktiki resnični sovražnik. Če vprašaš tam gori, koga se resnično ves čas in najbolj bojijo, ti bodo vsi odgovorili – se pravi tjulnji, polarne lisice, arktični zajci in Eskimi – da severnega medveda. Severni medved je največji plenilec na Arktiki in če Rutte misli z ohranjanjem arktične varnosti na Ruse in njihove apetite, se moti. Vsako živo bitje na daljnem severu se enega polarnega medveda boji bolj, kot se boji stotih Rusov. Če smo že pri tem … Sicer ne vemo zagotovo, ampak rajtamo, da se tudi Rusi sami bojijo polarnih medvedov. Za ohranitev Arktike varne bi se morali slovenski obrambni strokovnjaki, pa vojska, si mislimo, odpraviti na jago severnih medvedov. Kar pa se zdi problematično, ker ne zmoremo upleniti niti domačih rjavih, ki po Rakitni strašijo prebivalce; če pa jih že dobimo pred cevi, se oglasi kakšna civilna iniciativa. Se pravi, da moramo nemudoma pojasniti gospodu generalnemu sekretarju, da smo Slovenci za varovanje Arktike čisto neprimerni in da bi vsled tega prispevali le tri odstotke BDP. Svojo polovico odstotka odstopimo nekomu, ki ima z mrazom in ledom večje veselje. Dancem, recimo. Potem gremo naprej. Tu so Američani. Se pravi, da se moramo s tremi odstotki potruditi, da bodo ostali varni tudi Američani. V tej državi je situacija še bolj zapletena, kot je to na skrajnem severu. Kot vemo, so največji sovražniki Američanov in njihove varnosti Američani sami. Američani imajo s pobijanjem Američanov veliko veselje in letne številke mrtvih gredo v tisoče. Slovenci pa, kot veleva dobra vzgoja, se v prepire drugih ne vtikamo radi. Vsaj ne z odstotki. Pa še nekaj je. Z Melanijo, ki je kljub posavski provenienci mentalno očitno najbolj stabilen del družine Trump, za varnost Amerike naredimo več kot nekatere druge članice Nata. Tako nam lahko na račun Amerike Rutte ponovno zmanjša prispevek za pol odstotka. In smo že na 2,5. Atlantik bomo branili z vsemi silami. Slovenci radi hodimo na morje. Država bo prispevala vsa plovila, ki so ji na razpolago. Policija policijski čoln, vojska vojaško ladjo, Narodni muzej pa koliščarski deblak. Namesto po jadranskih obalah se bomo razmestili po atlantskih in namesto "Večeras je naša fešta" prepevali "Jutri gremo v napad!" Vse ostalo bo ostalo enako. Tako pridemo do Evrope in njene varnosti. Ki jo je treba ohraniti z vsem, kar imamo. Parlamentarna skupščina Nata je bila v Ljubljani o tem jasna. Evropo bomo branili z orožjem in z obrambnimi izdatki. O tem ni dvoma. Kot kaže, jo branimo in jo bomo branili pred Rusi. Nekoliko manj je jasno, kako jo bomo obranili pred domačimi norci. Oziroma, če citiramo slavnega Rusa: "Glave nas bodo stali bedaki v lastnih vrstah."

We sit down with Adela Hîncu, historian and editor of the volume Texts and Contexts from the History of Feminism and Women's Rights East Central Europe, Second Half of the Twentieth Century (2024) to discuss feminist thought in post World War 2 socialist East Central Europe.Book description:A compendium of one hundred sources, preceded by a short author's bio and an introduction, this volume offers an English language selection of the most representative texts on feminism and women's rights from East Central Europe between the end of the Second World War and the early 1990s. While communist era is the primary focus, the interwar years and the post-1989 transition period also receive attention. All texts are new translations from the original.The book is organised around themes instead of countries; the similarities and differences between nations are nevertheless pointed out. The editors consider women not only in their local context, but also in conjunction with other systems of thought—including shared agendas with socialism, liberalism, nationalism, and even eugenics.The choice of texts seeks to demonstrate how feminism as political thought was shaped and organised in the region. A national and international champion herself, by the time she was a teenager, she coached and choreographed dancers from her family's studio, Bolero, to new heights and world titles. Meanwhile, she built her professional resume and impressive reputation across Europe and the world. Soon enough, Nika moved to Los Angeles, California to further pursue her dreams. It was not long before she had worked with the likes of Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, and appeared on mainstream televised award shows such as the MTV Video Music Awards, the Latin Grammys, X-Factor, and more. All the while, Nika continued to fulfill her passion for education, teaching often sold out classes to dancers at Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles, and touring the country and world teaching master classes, both individually, and with elite dance convention programs. She is currently on faculty at Jump dance convention. Nika's choreography can be seen on prime time television shows such as Fox TV's So You Think You Can Dance and The Masked Singer, CBS's Come Dance With Me, and more, and in both live and virtual arenas across the world - to name only two of many, Nika choreographed for Taiwanese “Queen of C-Pop” Jolin Cai's Ugly Beauty World Tour in 2019 and J. The pavilions represent Plečnik's unique interpretations of the 'Primitive Hut' as an architectural form.
