When Sophia Catania learned that there would be a massive invasion of cicadas in the Chicago area, she was thrilled. That's because she turns cicadas into jewelry. In 2020, Catania began taking walks “as a way to stay sane” during the pandemic, she said. Her casual walks soon turned into nature walks while she looked for and observed bugs. One day, she began picking up bug carcasses and taking them home. Host - Jon HansenReporters - Iridian Fierro, Crystal PaulRead More Here Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

During the pandemic lockdown, we had a chance to talk online with Mexican American indigenous visual artist and designer Ivan Vazquez. Using art as a weapon Ivan's work portrays resilience by embracing and trusting community to help and guide him on his childhood journey growing up in Chicago. His work has allowed him to grieve the loss of best friends (Luis Trueba , Lino Diaz, Juan Zapata, and Daniel Aragon)and positively deal with trauma. His goal is to share his way of healing to others struggling. Ivan's has been featured in sponsored shows/charity and community events ranging from the Jordan Brand, Don Julio Tequila, Mountain Dew, Red Bull Music Academy, The NBA, Pepsi co. ,season 4 and 5 of “The Chi” on showtime, Howard brown health, broadway youth center and Toyota. Using art as a weapon Ivan Vazquez's work continues to evolve and grow finding better ways to serve the community. Come take a look into the past, present, and most importantly the future with visuals from Ivan Vazquez's budding collection "Aztec boys n the hood ". Ivan's website: https://www.ivanvazquezart.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thechicagolago/ ARTIST STATEMENT "I lost a few brothers due to the senseless violence Chicago is known for. I stored it away for over 15 years until I came across a 8th grade photo of them and had a epiphany . My art became the way I finally grieved and at the same time heal" its my way to pay tribute to them. My mission is to empower/educate youth with positive and relate-able alternative lifestyles. The representation of Chicago and hip hop culture in my work reflects the need for positive outlets , unity, love and positivity. My paintings are a reflection of how it feels and looks growing up in Chicago. The beauty and brutality the city is known for. My art embodies the four seasons and the need for balance in a city where if you don't stay grounded you get swept away. My subjects are often very young and don the masks of Aztec/Zulu and indigenous warriors and gods. The characters represent modern day warriors and ancestors we call on for strength and to summon spiritual powers. The visuals are meant to empower, unify, inspire and educate . There is a darkness in my work as well as a sense of serenity, promise, and light. My goal is to preserve and contribute to the culture and represent the mis and underrepresented." This remarkable Episode #6 of Sex in the Pews commences with Glenn and Owen engaged in a discussion of the difference between what generally attracts women to men and vice versa. That segued into a bit of debate between the guys about the “sacredness” of sex. It ain’t boring. Then Jaclyn Moore, the Chicago Artist and Businesswoman, returns to the Pews. Jaclyn reiterated her struggles during a 23 year old sexless marriage. She also tells how she finally achieved orgasm at age 48. It involved a field trip with concerned friends to Lovers’ Lane, a Chicago area boutique for erotica and adult merchandise. Find out how that shopping spree changed her life and entered into her divorce proceedings. Plus, there is so much more revealed including topics like, “squirting”, “road sex”, “ménage trois” and what Jaclyn did more than six times during her marriage of 23 years (while she was having sex with her husband only six times). This not-to–miss podcast is funny, real, raw, provocative and optimistic! ENJOY!
Welcome to the Love Chicago Women podcast! In our first episode, I interview local Chicago artist, Gloria I. Rivera, to learn what has inspired her art and conversely, how her art has inspired her and many others. Born and raised on the southside of Chicago, Gloria has been influenced by the city her entire life. Having faced several challenges in her earlier years, primarily fighting self-doubt and fear, she discovered that visual art was a way for her to process, heal, and share her lessons with others. The creation of each piece forced her to reflect on herself and the struggle that inspired each revelation and triumph. Through her art, she has found peace, passion, and unconditional self love...and on this episode she shares some advice on the power in loving ourselves and how to tap into that valuable energy that surrounds us. You can find Gloria on Instagram: @gloriairiveraart and @godiesartlife . This podcast is hosted by Negeen Masghati (IG: @negeenmasghati)
