The latest leg of our flight through entirety comes to a gentle landing this week, but before we all head off to collect our luggage, all seven of us take the opportunity to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat in one last retrospective. Notes and links Thank you to those of you who sent us questions: Kate Orman, Doctor What and General Witchfinders. In our discussion of Sleep No More, Brendan reaches for the name of Bethany Black's love interest in the episode, but goes slightly astray. The name he's after is Chopra, played by the astoundingly beautiful Neet Mohan. In Episode 2 of Flight Through Entirety, Richard famously compares Hartnell's performance style to Marlene Dietrich's. This week, he bookends that beautifully with a comparison of Peter Capaldi's style to Maggie Smith's, particularly her Oscar-winning performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Richard alludes to this story from 2015, in which a team consisting of Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss came third in a Doctor Who pub trivia competition at a Doctor Who convention in Sydney. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll abandon you for a few years, leaving you with only a couple of Flight Through Entirety-style Doctor Who podcasts to keep you entertained in the meantime. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. Now that Flight Through Entirety is taking a break, you should all go and subscribe to 500 Year Diary, our latest new Doctor Who podcast, in which we go back through the history of the show and examine new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early in 2024, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season, The Second Coming, early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire recently released our hot take on Ncuti Gatwa's second Christmas Special (and Steven Moffat's ninth), Joy to the World. And we'll be back again in 2025 to talk about Season 2. Last week, The Three-Handed Game released their first Christmas Special, discussing the 1966 Avengers episode Too Many Christmas Trees, in which Steed's weird Christmas nightmares start to become reality. The boys will be back in 2025 for the third episode in their triptych The Pop Explosion. Maximum Power is back at last with its long-awaited coverage of the 1981 season of Blakes 7. Last weekend we released our discussion on the season's controversial second episode — Power. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we watched a notoriously silly early episode of Deep Space Nine, the widely reviled but never forgotten Move Along Home. Thank you very much for listening: we'll see you again in a few years. And on all of our other podcasts, of course.

Top comedian, writer and actor Bethany Black was the first kid in her school to get into Red Dwarf. She spread the word and soon everyone was into it. So, you can expect a lifetime of wisdom and enthusiasm! We have an interesting chat about how the show relates to the Alternative Comedy movement and other sitcoms of the time. Bethany reveals how her favourite characters influenced the way she lived and dressed as a kid (spoiler: not Rimmer). And her recasting idea opens the door to a deep insight into the characters…and what they reveal about different aspects of human nature. Series 4 episode 6, Meltdown, was one of Bethany's favourites back in the day. What does she think about it now? It's so much fun! We discuss Risk and how it affects the psyche. Rimmer's military madness. How well the cultural references and jokes have aged. And how much joy the lookalikes bring to the character mix. Stand-up comedy and chat from triple-threat Rosie Jones. She's disabled, gay and northern. But she's not a great example of any of these communities and she's tired of being asked to speak on their behalf. This week, Rosie looks at gender with help from comedian Bethany Black. Society has moved on since the 1990s, and Bethany has had a unique perspective on the change in attitudes to men, women and everything between. Recorded in a live comedy club, prepare to be shocked and disappointed by Rosie's lack of respect for your expectations. Produced by Richard Melvin A Dabster production for BBC Radio 4

Comic Cuts - The Panel Show

Hi, I'm Kev F and I'm here to tell you about Comic Cuts The Panel Show, your new favourite podcast about comics.Every week I get two guests to bring a panel from a comic into the show. We try and guess where it's from, then we talk comics. Sometimes we get nerdy and knowledgable, and you learn a lot about comics you've probably never heard of, and more often we get inspired by what we see and the conversation goes off at wild tangents. My guests so far have included comic creators like Brian Bolland, Rachel Smith of Quarantine Comix, Metaphrog, Jessica Martin, Julius Zebra's Gary Northfield, The Beano's Nigel Auchterlounie, Laura Howell, Rianne Rowlands & Nigel Parkinson, manga artists like Sonia Leong & Laura Watton, Comics Laureate Hannah Berry, Psycho Gran's David Leach, Resident Alien creator Peter Hogan,  and loads of comedians including Bethany Black, Will Hodgson, Paul Kerensa, Iszi Lawrence, Doug Segal, Ashley Storrie, Juliet Burton, Juliette Myers, Susan Murray, Bennett Arron.  I've had The Secret History of Hollywood's Adam Roche, and legendary singer songwriter Dean Friedman - and the guest list grows every week. And the comics they've brought in have ranged from Marvel and DC to The Bunty and The Eagle, from Robert Crumb to Viz, from brand new webcomics to obscure manga, indy to classic, and all points in-between. There are so many comics out there, and so much love for them.So listen in, have fun guessing what comics we're looking at, and enjoy the conversation with this stellar cast of guests, in a show that - did I mention - is only half an hour long?Subscribe to Comic Cuts The Panel Show, wherever you get your podcasts, and we'll see you every Friday. Expect the unexpected.

Comic Cuts - The Panel Show

Resident Alien co-creator Peter Hogan and comedian & actor Bethany Black share with us panels from a 1960s comic from a surprising creator, and one of the most fun superheroes of the 2020s. The conversation takes us from Pete Townshend's Eel Pie Island to behind the scenes on Doctor Who via five decades of comics, TV, and music. With additional material by Alan Smithee.See the images from all episodes here at kevfcomicartist.com (they're also in the episode artwork).Every episode, the guests reveal a panel from a comic, we try and guess where it's from, then we chat about it. Half an hour later hopefully we've learned something, or just shown off and had fun along the way.If you've enjoyed this, why not buy us a virtual coffee Kev F's Ko-Fi page.Your host, and series creator, is Kev F Sutherland, writer and artist for Beano, Marvel, Oink, Viz, and most recently author and artist of graphic novels based on Shakespeare. kevfcomicartist.com

In this episode, Shana and Daniel do a whirlwind discussion of the last four episodes of Series 9, focusing on the death and resurrection of Clara (spoiler alert!) and Moffat's treatment of grief. Also the return of Ashildr, authoritarianism and collateral damage, and deterministic systems.  Main Topic: Sleep No More, Face the Raven, Heaven Sent, and Hell Bent. Sheep Go to Heaven. Completely irrelevant. Gatiss and whimsy. Bethany Black. Not puzzleboxy. Nancy Kress. Found footage. "That's not how subduction zones work." Face the Raven. The Doctor and young black men. Harry Potter. Non-queer Me. Sexual dimorphism. The weight of Clara's death. A response to Journey's End. Moffat proving his feminist bonafides. Leaving the show. Refugees and the Men in Black. Restructuring. The wall of diamond. Leaving Heaven Sent exactly as he came in. The Perfect Companion. A brief digression on fan response to Clara's tits. Authoritarian Me. "Jenna Oswald." The longest time between beginning and end of an episode ever. Overkill. Groundhog Day. Doctor/Me equivalence. Sisyphus without existentialism. "Story on rails." Secret Honor. Philip Glass. Grief porn and torture porn. Poker chips. Doctor Who as a Western. Fanboy Daniel. Dropping social meaning for the personal. Clara versus Amy. Clara versus Charlie. The Hybrid and MacGuffin. Me as a representation of human history. Shana hasn't seen Brain of Morbius. Gender among Time Lords. The Doctor shoots a guy in the face. Clara vs. Tasha Yar. Overstuffed but undercooked. Jenna Coleman's legacy. Looking forward to the Christmas special. Next week: Planet of the Ood.  Links Sheep Go To Heaven.  Web of Queer: No More Mind.  Beggars in Spain. On this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the 9th episode of series 9, Sleep No More, and the Sixth Doctor classic story, Mindwarp. For our Sleep No More review, we discussed the diverse cast of characters on the show, including 474, the character played by Bethany Black. What did we think of her role, and how the other characters in the story treated her? Did we like the idea of the Morpheus pods and how did we think the narrative held up as a whole? For our Classic review, we continue the Trial of a Timelord series with Mindwarp. Court scenes, a Brian Blessed debut, and corporate slug overlords fill out the story, but how full was it? Did we believe the Doctor was really affected by the machine? And what do we think of Peri’s storyline? Time Stamps:00:00 Intro00:47 Sleep No More review32:31 Mindwarp review We love feedback!
