Yngvild Kaspersen, Toni McCann and Dani Moreno are professional trail athletes for Adidas Terrex and respectively CCC 2023 winner, OCC 2023 winner and third place finisher at OCC 2022. Yngvild, Toni and Dani are currently in Auburn for a short training camp on the Western States trails, so I thought it would be fun to catch up and see how they're doing, how their training is going, how they support each other, who's mostly in charge of cooking, who makes the best coffee, and much more. As endurance athletes, we don't always get to share our training with other people, but when we do, that's where the magic happens.  ____________________________ Follow @vert.run on IG Download our app and sign up to our training plans on vert.run You can send us a message with any questions for us or for our guests! https://anchor.fm/vertrun/message Francesco's links: Instagram | Twitter | Strava | Website

We traveled to Auburn CA to talk with Dan Macon, a Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor with the University of California Cooperative Extension about his own livestock operation and his utilization of Livestock Guardian Dogs. We sat down with Dan to learn about the need for these dogs, their training and their viability in livestock operations. We were also fortunate to visit Dan's flock of sheep and meet the two dogs, Elko and Dillon, who spend their lives as an integral part of the heard preventing predation from coyotes, mountain lions, feral dogs and even bears. Livestock Guardian Dogs live with their herd day and night. In fact they often prefer the company of their herd to the company of humans.

In this episode of the First 99 Gear Review, co-host Mike Turner sits down with our very own Greg Larkin to chat about winter cross training activities. It’s the New Year, and the time to start planning our race and training schedules. But many of us have found over the years it’s essential to take time off and let the body heal. Balancing staying fit, letting the body heal, and staying sane is the key to years of healthy adventures. In this two-part series we discuss off-season activities and related gear. During part 1 we dig into indoor activities and during part 2 we focus on outdoor winter activities.Greg’s dad started racing bikes in NH in his 40s and Greg, as a teenager, jumped right in. As a kid he also took up cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. He raced bikes for over 15 years, incorporating skiing in the winter when the roads were too icy to ride. His dad exposed him to his first indoor bike trainer called “rollers”. These required superb balance as both wheels were moving in sync and there was nothing holding up the bike. In the mid 80s, Greg acquired a RacerMate. This was a major upgrade and attached to the bike and generated resistance from a fan unit that rotated against the rear wheel while riding on a stand. After college in the late 80s, Greg moved to Boston and met a buddy who rowed crew for Tufts University. The crew team used an ergometer (erg for short) Concept2 rowing machine when not on the water to train. Typical Greg, it was not long before he signed up for the CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championships held in Boston. He ended up buying a Concept2 Model C that day and still pushes his limits on it. He’s never rowed on water, but the rowing machine provides a solid workout once some basic techniques have been learned. Then came that fateful summer day when the Dartmouth University Ski Team blew by him on a trail run, charging up some monster peak in the NH White Mountains. He was bit by the trail running bug. Greg moved to Auburn CA in 2014 and fell in love with the Endurance Capital of the World. Greg is currently cross training with the Concept2 Model C hooked up through the ErgData app on his iPhone and tethered to Strava. For indoor cycling, he is using a Saris M2 smart trainer for virtual group rides via the Zwift app. Greg currently rows and rides 2 to 3 times a week in his “off-season”. Tune into this episode of the First 99 Gear Review to get all the details on what to get, where to get it, and how little it will actually set you back. Please let us know your indoor setup is like, what is working, and what is not.RacerMate: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/03/going-old-school-using-bike-trainer.htmlSaris Smart Trainer: https://www.saris.com/catalog/smart-trainersZwift: https://www.zwift.com/Smart Trainers: https://www.competitivecyclist.com/Store/catalog/search.jsp?q=smart%20trainer&p=group_id%3AccCat100375&s=aTacx Smart Trainer: https://tacx.com/smart-bike-trainers/Concept2: https://www.concept2.com/news/what-ergConcept2 Training Guides: https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/training/plans-and-resourcesCRASH B: https://usSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/themile99interview)

Welcome to episode 82 of the Final Surge podcast with our guest this week Zach Cole. Zach has built a new website called HopDash.com which is helping connect runners to running locations and groups. It is a great way to find a group to run with when you travel, or maybe just to discover new running areas in your city.    You launched a new site called hop dash.com and I want to dig into it, but before we do that we like to introduce our listeners to our guests find out a little about who you are, if you could tell our listeners how you got started with running? College basketball player Started running with a morning group after college Continued to train  Joined track team You talk about how you started running with a few groups, HopDash your new site is about running with groups, so can you give us a background on the site? Discover running groups in your city or places you visit Traveled a lot and always looking for running clubs could join for a workout Running is more exciting when you can connect with people while doing it Do you find that groups are comprised of similar runners or are most groups varied in who is running with them? Most groups have good variety Most have some new runners and some more advanced   When I look at your HopDash and I click on one of the cities, let’s say Boston, on the right I see interesting places to run and then on the bottom I see a calendar and each day has a different set of runs and each of those runs dots in the upper corner, one green, two yellow, three orange dots what do those mean? Can be confusing, reworking that Intent to show how easy or difficult a given workout may be Assigning the difficulty is difficult because most groups have a wide variety on the same day How does it work, who updates the workouts? There is an input field where clubs can create their team and workouts Using a Google Sheets API Will be making it more scaleable in the future The interesting places to run, are they user-generated too? First few cities built from experience Now users submitting tips and ideas to be included As it builds out will make it searchable with filters How do I know if the group I am looking at is more casual vs more serious? When you read the descriptions of the clubs and workouts it gives you a lot of information on what to expect on that run External link to running clubs website to learn more about them You are relying on user feedback and people entering their information, so how do you see this growing? Contribute link at top of website Can add city and club and workouts Several cities being worked on right now  Who are some of the interesting people you have met while traveling? Ran in Vancouver with a group there In Boston last year ran with The November Project TrackSmith Group in Boston In NY this winter ran in the 'Bomb Cyclone' had classic NY character What is the hardest or most memorable place you ran? Last fall ran in Mammoth with Mammoth Track Club on a track at 7k feet Half marathon run up to 9k feet and swam in a freezing lake Tim Tollefson showed another trail run that was incredible Auburn CA during Western States and a trail run it was over 100 degrees, no shade, 2k feet of gain was the hardest run  We see training professional groups forming around the country, but also we see many local training groups and running communities. Why do you think these are growing? Something powerful in training with a group A routine helps grow individual and group success Fun to have other people to cheer for and be cheered on Investing in other people's success helps all involved Success keeps people going   Final Surge 5 questions in under a minute Favorite endurance/running book? - Once a Runner Current trainers you are wearing? - Challenger 3's Favorite race? - Santa Cruz to Capitola Wharf Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Burger and Beer Your favorite workout - 1600 repeats How to connect with you? - Hopdash:  - Zach on Twitter
