Dr. Sandie Morgan is joined by Ambassador John Cotton Richmond as the two discuss the 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report. John Cotton Richmond Ambassador Richmond is an attorney and diplomat focused on ethical business, human rights, democracy, and rule of law. He served in the country's highest position dedicated to combating human trafficking as a U.S. Ambassador where he led U.S. foreign policy in the global fight for freedom. As a Partner at Dentons, Ambassador Richmond helps companies keep their supply chains and workforces free of human trafficking. He was named one of the federal “Prosecutors of the Year,” after a decade successfully trying complex police misconduct, cross-burning, neo-Nazi hate crimes, forced labor, and sex trafficking cases across the country. Ambassador Richmond is a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, frequent expert for the United Nations, and frequent speaker on justice, freedom, leadership, faith, and vocation. Key Points The TIP Report evaluates 188 countries on their anti-trafficking efforts, including prosecution, protection, and prevention, and ranks them based on their progress compared to previous years. The rankings influence U.S. foreign policy, with tier three countries facing sanctions. Victim identification has improved with 133,943 victims identified this year, but this number represents less than 0.5% of estimated global victims. The TIP Report notes a rise in identified labor trafficking victims (31% of the total), highlighting a shift from primarily sex trafficking cases. The report does not specify industries, but labor trafficking occurs in various sectors, including domestic work and agriculture. Although prosecutions have slightly increased to 18,074, they are still below previous highs. Convictions remain significantly lower compared to past years, indicating insufficient accountability for traffickers. Despite regulations, victim identification remains low due to unfunded or underfunded mandates. Improved funding and strategic resource allocation are necessary to increase victim identification and support. The TIP Report emphasizes both the challenges and opportunities technology presents in combating trafficking. It also highlights the importance of including survivors in anti-trafficking efforts, recognizing their unique perspectives and contributions to the fight against trafficking. In the second episode of Color of Publishing, we focus on publishing perspectives from and about the United States with Elizabeth Méndez Berry (One World Books) and Porscha Burke (Random House). Host Bhakti Shringarpure engages the two experts in a wide-ranging conversation about book acquisitions, editorial processes, taste and culture-making, equity, and structural racism as it impacts the publishing industry and the book market. Méndez Berry and Burke speak openly about what brought them to publishing and the challenges they encountered in the industry with regards to race as well as gender. PEN America's scathing report Reading Between the Lines: Race, Equity, and Book Publishing has “found deep and persistent obstacles to bringing more titles by authors of color to commercial success” and that 95% of books published in the United States from 1950 to 2018 were written by white authors. Employees as well as senior level positions in the publishing industry remain disproportionately white. Méndez Berry and Burke take listeners through the many invisible stages of book production (acquisitions, book deals, editorial, cover design, promotions, distribution and marketing) and the obstacles encountered by writers of color at every stage. Méndez Berry cautions that when “we primarily publish books by white authors, the number of stories that we're avoiding or suppressing is significant.” Burke speaks about her career as service-oriented in order to transform publishing and create space for diverse authors and diverse stories. Elizabeth Méndez Berry is Vice President and Executive Editor of One World, an imprint of Random House in New York. She is an award-winning writer and editor who writes about culture, gender, criminal justice and politics, and has also co-founded several philanthropic institutes. Porscha Burke has revolutionized publishing in her fifteen years at Random House. She has worked with authors such as Maya Angelou and Reverend Amy Butler, and has led the publication of new editions of The Autobiography of Malcolm X and The Black Book that were originally edited by Toni Morrison. She received her MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College, where she currently teaches book proposal writing.

On October 17th 2022, PEN America published a report titled “Reading Between the Lines: Race, Equity and Book Publishing” with the goal to expose and explore the fact that the publishing industry has “entered a moment of moral urgency about the persistent lack of racial and ethnic diversity among employees and authors.” In our three-part series focused on this crisis in publishing, we debrief listeners on this report and gather perspectives from publishing professionals in the United States (Elizabeth Méndez Berry & Porsche Burke) and the United Kingdom (Margaret Busby & Ellah P. Wakatama). In this episode, Bhakti Shringarpure and Suchitra Vijayan break down the PEN America report section by section while also revealing the industry's problematic practices and bad habits through their own experiences. The report is divided into 5 parts. The first section offers a snapshot of the transitions taking place in the industry, and the crisis around racism and diversity exposed and expressed due to the uprisings for Black lives that began in 2020. The second section addresses the lack of diversity among the staff, editors and executives in the publishing world which then limits the types of books being acquired, produced and sold. In this long section, there are shocking revelations about hostile work environments, reported micro-aggressions, and the practice of typecasting editors and authors of color. The third section tackles pervasive prejudices such as “diverse books don't sell” or that certain communities of color “don't read” or the notion that one book per community of color is “enough.” Writers of color are trapped because they “are not only damned if they tell stories that white gatekeepers wrongly believe they've already read—they're also damned if they don't tell stereotypical stories that white publishers actually have already read and expect.” The fourth and fifth sections deal with questions of sales, marketing and promotion practices that continually disadvantage authors of color. Ranger Christopher Gwinn will examine the story of the battle, the myths and legends that still hover over its rocky slopes, and detail how Little Round Top became a “vision place of souls.” Sun. Jan. 22  - The Great Reunion of 1913 John Heiser, Historian In the summer of 1913, Pennsylvania invited thousands of Union and Confederate veterans to come to Gettysburg to observe and celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, what many considered to be the "High Water Mark the Rebellion". The response from veterans of the Blue and Gray was overwhelming - over 54,000 old soldiers journeyed to a battlefield skillfully transformed by a government commission into a memorial park, where the armies of both North and South would forever be memorialized. Critics scoffed that old enemies could never get along, the divisions that caused the war in 1861 having not been forgotten. But America was changing at home and abroad and those who chose to ignore this commemoration were surprised at its outcome. Was this "Great Reunion" finally the signal of national reunification so many had hoped for fifty years after the final shot had been fired? Sat. Feb. 5 – What the Ground Lay Bare: Archeology at Little Round Top and Devils Den Erik Kreusch, Gettysburg National Miliary Park Gettysburg National Military Park has been rehabilitating both the Devil's Den as well as the Little Round Top. Archeologists have been conducting metal detector sweeps of areas where ground disturbance was anticipated. The archeological findings have the potential to shed light on the activities of individuals during and immediately following the fight. The program will highlight some of the current findings. This coupled with firsthand narrative accounts allows the park to enhance our understanding and interpretation. Sat. Feb. 11 – “First in '61:" Nicholas "Nick" Biddle and Pennsylvania's Forgotten First Defenders   John Hoptak, Gettysburg National Military Park On the evening of April 18, 1861, less than 72 hours after the surrender of Fort Sumter and President Abraham Lincoln's subsequent call-to-arms, the very first Northern volunteer soldiers arrived in the nation's beleaguered capital. Although long overshadowed in history by the more famous 6th Massachusetts Infantry, these soldiers composed the ranks of five companies of Pennsylvania militia who later became known as the "First Defenders." Attacked by a pro-secessionist/pro-Confederate mob in Baltimore on their journey south to Washington, these First Defenders shed some of the very first blood of what would become the country's bloodiest conflict. Included among those injured was Nicholas "Nick" Biddle, a sixty-five-year-old African American man who had escaped from slavery, and who now wore the uniform of one of the Pennsylvaniacompanies. Since 2013, Christopher has been leading an undergraduate research endeavor called "The Virtual Lincoln Project," in which he and his students are creating a digital photo-real Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. His lecture Placing the Platform: Using 3D Technology to Pinpoint Lincoln at Gettysburg explores Christopher's digital research that has led him to determine where Lincoln was actually standing when he delivered the Gettysburg Address. Sat. Feb. 25 – A Crusade for Peace--Eisenhower and the Korean War Daniel Vermilya, Eisenhower National Historic Site 70 Years ago, Dwight D. Eisenhower ascended to the presidency at a time of great unrest and conflict. Nowhere was that conflict greater than in the Korean peninsula, where Americans had been fighting and dying by the thousands for several years. Join Eisenhower NHS Ranger Dan Vermilya to explore Eisenhower's crusade for peace in Korea, America's forgotten war. This program will provide special Gettysburg connections to the Korean War by highlighting stories in Gettysburg National Cemetery, and will also feature the newest addition to the Eisenhower NHS museum collection, the parka that President-Elect Eisenhower wore during his visit to Korea in December 1952. Feb 26 – Gettysburg and the Civil War: From County Seat to National Symbol Barbara Sanders, Gettysburg National Military Park Residents of Gettysburg and Adams County were not just passive observers of the 1863 battle.  Its citizens included men who fought on both sides of the conflict, women who took in or traveled to the wounded after the battle, African Americans who dug the graves for the dead, and generations who worked to support the community from its modest time as county seat of government, to the site of a major battle, host of veterans' reunions, and creation of a National Park.  Stories of its most noteworthy townspeople will illuminate this ever- changing community as a microcosm of a nation moving forward from immense conflict to create a universal symbol of freedom, sacrifice, equality and democracy.
