A counter-protest supporting democracy is planned to go head-to-head with a rally led by Brian Tamaki's Freedoms & Rights Coalition in Auckland this weekend. Counter protest organiser Mark Graham said it was a spur of the moment decision to show up and "save the nation's democracy". "The coalition and Brian Tamaki are not calling for freedom and rights, they want things to be done the way they want. That's just selfish. "He is throwing a tantrum because he is not getting what he wants. This is not democratic." Graham said their group was building in numbers since last night's decision to head to Auckland Domain on Saturday. "It is an important issue for us. We do not like what the coalition is doing, it is just not right. "We hope more people will show up to save our nation's democracy." Police have confirmed they are in talks with organisers of this weekend's anti-Government protest in and around Auckland Domain, which organisers threaten will be "impactive". A police spokesperson said they were discussing potential routes and plans with the group. "Police recognise the lawful right to protest. We also recognise the rights of the public to go about their lawful business. "We will monitor and respond to the situation accordingly to ensure public safety and to make sure any disruption to the public is kept to a minimum." A call has been made on social media for people who oppose the anti-government sentiments to gather as a counter-protest, with some saying they would block motorway entrances to prevent any attempt by demonstrators to disrupt traffic. The rights coalition stormed the Southern Motorway last month. The group, led by Destiny Church's Brian Tamaki, are calling Saturday morning's protest a "Kiwi Patriots Day and March". The group revealed it was also planning a major demonstration at Parliament grounds in a few weeks Details of this weekend's march route have not yet been shared with the public. It has said it would not be the same as the previous protest but would be "impactive". Newmarket Business Association chief executive Mark Knoff-Thomas said it hoped the protesters would respect the business owners' right to trade. "The last one caused major disruptions to our trade. We saw an immediate impact as Newmarket was cut off from the public so shoppers could not come in. "Saturday's our busiest day and in these times we need all the business we can get." Bishop Brian Tamaki led group plans to host a 'Kiwi Patriots Day and March' at Auckland Domain on Saturday morning. Photo / Brett Phibbs Auckland Council says it has concerns about potential health risks posed by the event and protestors desecrating consecrated ground around the area of the Cenotaph and Court of Honour. Director of customer and community services Dr Claudia Wyss said the proposed activity could result in "damage to the Domain, interruption of public enjoyment, prevent access to the Auckland Museum, and disrupt scheduled sporting activities". And given the high level of Covid-19 in the community, there were health risks. "It is important to note that the proposed activities require prior approval from the council, and that an application for the relevant event permit and other associated trading permits has not yet been received. "Events and activities held in a public place without prior approval can result in enforcement action." The council had written to the organisers making their position clear, Wyss said. "We are in touch with the police and will support them in any action they deem necessary on the day to prevent a breach of the law or damage to public property." The group claims the upcoming march will be an "opportunity to unite freedom fighters across the North Island and rally the public for the coming events ahead". A similar demonstration is also planned for Christchurch the following weekend. Police yesterday said they were still making inquiries about the last month's protest, and no charges had been laid. - Akula Sharma, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Francesca Rudkin: Auckland is fractious after this past week

The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2021 2:34

It's been an interesting week in Level 3. ‘Fractious' would be the way I'd describe Auckland at present - we're ever so gently pulling apart at the seams. This week I've heard of teenagers catching up with their mates at the park, kids having sleep-overs, friends going on walks together. Being in level 3 and double vaccinated some bubbles are growing faster than they should. In other neighbourhoods though, where sub-clusters linger, there is still an urgency to get tested and vaccinated and many are clinging tightly to their bubbles as they've been asked to do. You never know what you're going to get when you venture outside. Some people smile and nod as they walk and run past you, others scowl at your proximity. Some scan their Covid tracer app, but many haven't switched into mandatory mode yet.  We've seen case numbers dip, then rise dramatically, sending kids into a panic - “are they going to take away our takeaways?” was the cry in our house on Wednesday. A day later, both the numbers and kids were calmer. We fluctuate between good news – a family was reunited this week, a ridiculous proposal for a cycleway across Auckland harbour was ditched, and finally 165,000 migrants can plan their lives – and bad news - stories of MIQ misery and the closure of one of Auckland's iconic restaurants. Euro's demise is a sign of what's to come. But while many of us are fraying in week 7 of lockdown, it has been confronting over recent days to watch a gang congregate for a funeral and Brian Tamaki lead his flock of around 2000 to the Auckland Domain in an anti-lockdown protest. For 18 months people have not been able to comfort, farewell or mourn their loved ones when they pass away during lockdown. It's one of the particularly cruel impacts of lockdown, but one that's been endured for the greater good.So watching a gang take to the street, or gather outside a cemetery, is flaunting the rules and infuriating; what concerns me just as much is what happened before and after the funeral - everyone home for a cuppa? The same could be said for Brian Tamaki's anti-lockdown protest yesterday at Auckland's Domain. A couple of thousand people turned up to hear Tamaki's message to the Government, which was "We've had a gutsful". I don't want to shock Tamaki, but we've all had a gutsful and the government is well aware of our lockdown fatigue. Only days from now the government will decide whether Auckland changes alert levels. Publicity stunts like this don't add to the conversation, they only put at risk the chances of us moving down levels. Painful as it is, we need to ride out the next few days at least, keep the vaccination rates up, and look forward at a summer of much fewer restrictions. Let's hope a few don't ruin it for us all.

Was it a vigil, a political rally - or both?Speeches calling out racism, colonialism and white supremacy at an Auckland vigil for victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks had some attendees leaving early, saying it was "too soon" for such discussions. But organisers and speakers have defended what some called a "political" tone of the Jummah Remembrance vigil held at Auckland Domain on Friday, saying they were "hard truths" Aotearoa needed to address.Thousands attended the vigil, where official speakers strongly challenged the rallying cry that last week's atrocity that killed 50 Muslim worshippers and injured dozens more was "not us".Muslim and tāngata whenua speakers covered experiences of everyday racism and violence they face, and spoke to New Zealand's white settler history and colonial violence.Sharon Hawke, of Ngāti Whātua Orakei, said hatred existed in New Zealand."White hatred is its foundation."She spoke of atrocities committed against Māori throughout New Zealand's history, including at Parihaka, and even Okahu Bay in Auckland in the 1950s, where the Auckland Council burned down her hapū's village.Israa Falah of the Auckland Muslim community said the Christchurch massacre was the result of the normalisation of xenophobia.People should call out racism when they saw it, she said.Zainab Mussa attended the vigil with her two young children but they left early partly because of the "uncomfortable tone"."Even being non Pākehā, I did feel uncomfortable at times with the continued mentions of white extremism and white terrorism."While she said she understood the need for a conversation about racism and white supremacy, she felt a week after the attacks was too soon."I think there was too much mention of 'white' and colonial times. To me that wasn't a remembrance of the victims and not the way to push for unity."Another attendee said they left early because they wanted the vigil to be more focused on the victims."No one disagrees the conversations need to be had, just not last night."That vigil was important to Aucklanders. It was important to me, to collectively show respect and love to the victims and the Muslim community, to weep quietly at the insanity and savagery of it, to be human and together in that response."Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson, who also spoke at the vigil, said rather than it being "too soon" it was actually "too late" to be having these conversations."People are already dead, it is too late."A lot of people wanted to separate what happened in Christchurch from politics, but if we have any hope of truly honouring those who passed we need to listen to our Muslim, Māori, Pacific and migrant communities, all saying this is not just about a violent shooter, but about everyday racism."She said she was "optimistic" though, as even though some people left early, most said it was more about timing."I know that it felt like such hard truths for many. I know this is uncomfortable. I am optimistic because I hear most of you who left in protest, saying it was more about timing."These were the voices from the front line of everything we need to heal."This view also appeared to resonate with many Pākehā who attended the vigil.Activist Ricardo Mendendez-March says he understands why people may have been uncomfortable, but he told The Weekend Collective that he felt the tone was respectful. "The people who have been meeting the political call are from the Muslim community, who for too many years have been warning the government that they've been under attack, that they feel the police haven't taken their concerns seriously." He says that politics have to change to prevent another attack from happening.Mendendez-March says he does not believe that the disgruntled voices reflected a majority of voices. He is attending a rally today that has been organised in wake of the protests Auckland man Jake Law said he stayed until the end, and as Pākehā he needed to listen to the voices...

Auckland is built between a couple of large harbours in the north of New Zealand's North Island. The iconic Sky Tower In the centre has great views of the Viaduct Harbour home to many superyachts and filled with brilliant bars and cafes. The city's oldest park, Auckland Domain is based around an extinct volcano and the city maintains many of its historical Auckland buildings among the contraction of many new skyscrapers and apartment buildings.

Kim Allan is a New Zealand-based ultra marathon runner. At the age of 47 on 22 November 2012 she attempted to complete a 500 km Ultra marathon with no sleep around the Sri Chimnoy Peace Mile at Auckland Domain, raising money for the New Zealand spinal trust and the Catwalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust but she only managed 385.8 km. However that wasn't the end of the story. Allan followed up at the International Association of Ultra runners (IAU) 24 Hour World Championship in the Netherlands on 11 & 12 May 2013 by accomplishing 203.919 km in the 24 hour period, then in December 2013 Allan ran for 86 hours, 11 minutes and 9 seconds without sleeping.  In that run she broke the previous women's world record of running without sleep (which was 486 kilometers) reaching 500 kilometers.  She was running to support the New Zealand Spinal Trust.  In this interview Lisa talks to Kim about overcoming obstacles, pushing the limits physically and mentally and what you gain when you face your fears, fight through the suffering and go for your goals. This incredible lady has much to teach us and you will leave inspired and challenged to achieve more no matter what your dream is and to never give up.
