The other half of the brain

Neurons have long enjoyed a kind of rock star status. We think of them as the most fundamental units of the brain—the active cells at the heart of brain function and, ultimately, at the heart of behavior, learning, and more. But neurons are only part of the story—about half the story, it turns out. The other half of the brain is made up of cells called glia. Glia were long thought to be important structurally but not particularly exciting—basically stage-hands there to support the work of the neurons. But in recent decades, at least among neuroscientists, that view has faded. In our understanding of the brain, glia have gone from stage-hands to co-stars.   My guest today is Dr. Nicola Allen. Nicola is a molecular neuroscientist and Associate Professor at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. She and her lab study the role of glial cells—especially astrocytes—in brain function and dysfunction.   Here, Nicola and I talk about how our understanding and appreciation of glial cells has changed. We do a bit of Brain Cells 101, reviewing the main division between neurons and glia and then sketching the subtypes within each category. We discuss the different shapes and sizes of glial cells, as well as the different functions. Glia are an industrious bunch. They're involved in synapse formation and pruning, the production of myelin, the repair of injuries, and more. We also talk about how glial cells have been implicated in various forms of brain dysfunction, from neurodegeneration to neurodevelopmental syndromes. And how, as a result, these cells are attracting serious attention as a site for therapeutic intervention.   Well, it's that time of year again folks. Applications are now open for the 2025 Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute, or DISI. This is an intense program—highly interdisciplinary, highly international—for scholars and storytellers interested in all forms and facets of intelligence. If you like thinking about minds, if you like thinking about humans and animals and plants and AIs and collectives and ways they're alike and different—you would probably like DISI. For more info, check out disi.org—that's D-I-S-I dot org. Review of applications begins March 1st, so don't dally too too long.   Alright friends—on to my conversation with Dr. Nicola Allen. Enjoy!   Notes and links 3:00 – Correction: “glia” actually comes from the Greek—not the Latin—for “glue.” 3:30 – See this short primer on glia by Dr. Allen and Dr. Ben Barres. For a bit of the history of how glial cells were originally conceived, see this article on Ramón y Cajal's contributions to glia research. 10:00 – On the nascent field of “neuroimmunology,” see here. 14:00 – On the idea that “90% of brain cells are glia” see this article by (former guest) Suzana Herculano-Houzel. 18:00 – The root “oligo” in “oligodendrocyte” means “few” (and is thus the same as the “olig” in, e.g., “oligarchy"). It is not related to the “liga-” in “ligament.” 28:00 – On the idea that the glia-neuron ratio changes as brains grow more complex, see again the article by Dr. Herculano-Houzel. 30:00 – See Dr. Allen's paper on the idea of glia as “architects.” See also Dr. Allen's paper on the idea of glia as “sculptors.” 33:00 – See Dr. Allen's paper on the idea of the “tripartite synapse.” 42:00 – A recent paper reviewing the phenomenon of adult neurogenesis.  48:00 –  See Dr. Allen's recent review of the role of astrocytes in neurodegeneration. 51:30 – A recent article on the roles of APOE in Alzheimer's.   Recommendations Glia (2nd edition), edited by Beth Stevens, Kelly R. Bacteria uses a clever 1-2 punch to make it through our central nervous systems defenses. The way bacteria can get through the outer layers of the meninges relies on knowing exactly what how the brain will respond to infection. Painful headaches are a key part of meningitis, but that pain response is actually opening the door for a sneak attack. Understanding how bacterial infections get into the brain will help develop new treatment pathways for meningitis. When bacteria come under attack themselves, they use signalling pathways that we can learn from. By studying the way bacteria defend themselves we could find common tools to use to precisely regulate human cells. Felipe A. Pinho-Ribeiro, Liwen Deng, Dylan V. In this episode, Tiffany Garbutt from The Scientist's Creative Services team spoke with Samuel Marsh, a postdoctoral research fellow in the laboratory of Beth Stevens at Boston's Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, about how he uses single cell technology and spatial transcriptomics to better understand the role of microglia in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. I spoke with Beth Stevens on April 1, 2020. I met Beth at a podcast event called the Boiling Point. Beth shares with us about she developed Beth's Bike Light being inspired by a tragedy that affected a local cyclist named Ellen Watters and how her light will help drivers abide by the new law named Ellen's Law in New Brunswick Canada which helps drivers know what 1 meter distance is that is safe for drivers and cyclists to share the road. Beth's Bike Light StoryOur StoryOne night I was listening to the radio in my kitchen. A very interesting news story came on. Ellen Watters story. Ellen Watters was a professional cyclist from Sussex NB. In December of 2016 she was out for a training run. Sadly a driver did not see her. She was hit by the car and passed away. This caused much sadness in the cycling community. Ellen was known for her passion for the sport, and her contagious positive attitude. The cycling community then introduced a new law to parliament. Eventually it came to pass “Ellen’s law” . This states that motorist must give cyclist 1 meter on the road. Since starting this venture, I have met many incredible cyclists. All of them have one thing in common. They are all passionate about their sport. Cycling is very good for the environment, while also having many benefits on our physical and mental health. Still cyclist are limited to their passion, because they do not feel safe on the roads. This is a problem. Ellen’s story inspired me to make a change. Then I had an idea, what if cyclist gave drivers a visual aid on the road? If drivers had a visual, it could help prevent many accidents from happening.Around the time I had this idea, I had a project due in school. My task was to solve a real problem using science technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Then I had the idea that lit up my world forever (pun intended). What if I created a light that showed drivers how much room to give cyclist on the road? That way drivers would not have to guess. They would have an exact measurement. This could be a great STEM project idea! The next day, my dad and I took a trip to Princess Auto. Finally after many hours and one full roll of duck tape, The first ever prototype was created. Although it was our first light, we did not stop there.
