The Christmas show will include 78 performances from November 5 through December 30. Brandon Martin, President and CEO of the American Music Theatre says the show is written, built, and produced entirely in house with a team of artists and creatives. “This is a special show, and I think they all are, quite honestly. But we're so excited for this one. You know, each year is very different and is kind of redesigned and rebuilt and created from the ground up. This year is really kind of a nod to the nostalgia of Christmas and a lot of the traditions that so many families hold dear. It takes place in a town square, which is just cynically stunning with a lot of hustle and bustle, some last-minute shopping, some festivities, tree lighting transitions into a grand cathedral for some of the sacred aspects of our show. Of course, there's quite a bit of merriment with some elves and Santa as well for the for the kids of all ages, church choir. But a real kind of family. And community vibe around this one that focuses a lot on that tradition.” The show features 55 singers, dancers, musicians, and youth performances from across the country. Auditions occur throughout the year with on-site rehearsals that begins as early as September. “In fact, we've been working in earnest on this particular show since January of this year. So, yeah, and even a little bit before then really in terms of the design aspects of it. Casting begins typically in the spring with a cast finalized and selected going into the summer. Rehearsals begin in September. And yes, we've been well underway for the past month or so with our cast all here in Lancaster rehearsing together. And yeah, we're coming up on it. We've got about a week to go.”      Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Renowned African American tenor and educator Jonathan Walker-VanKuren continues to leave an indelible mark on the world of music, both on stage and in the classroom. With a diverse repertoire spanning jazz, musical theatre, art song, and opera, Walker-VanKuren has captivated audiences with his powerful voice and versatile performances. Currently serving as Assistant Professor of Voice and Artist Teacher of Studio Voice and Music Theatre at Lebanon Valley College, Walker-VanKuren balances his teaching duties with a busy schedule of recitals and operatic performances. His influence extends far beyond the college walls, as evidenced by the success of his students who have gone on to pursue music at prestigious institutions such as Texas A&M, Michigan State University, and Belmont University. Recent highlights from Walker-VanKuren's performing career include his roles as Thamar in Opera Southwest's revival production of "Ali Baba," as well as captivating portrayals of the Witch in "Hansel and Gretel," Don Jose in "La tragédie de Carmen," Fenton in "Falstaff," Nelson in "Porgy and Bess," and Beppe in "Il Pagliacci." And in a testament to Lebanon Valley College's commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, the Music Theatre department is set to host a sensory-friendly performance of "Tuck Everlasting" on Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m. in Leedy Theatre inside the Allan W. Mund College Center. This initiative aims to provide a welcoming environment for individuals with sensory needs or other social, cognitive, and/or physical challenges, allowing them to enjoy the magic of live theatre. What To Expect: Audiences attending the sensory-friendly performance can expect several modifications to enhance their experience, including keeping the lights dimmed throughout the show, reducing overall sound levels, and eliminating potentially overwhelming elements such as strobe lights and intense sound effects. Additionally, the cast and crew will adjust their interactions with the audience to ensure a comfortable atmosphere for all attendees. To further support guests, a staffed quiet area will be available in the lobby for those who may need a break during the performance. Audience members are also encouraged to bring their own comfort objects and support items to personalize their experience and make the most of this unique theatrical event. Through his dedication to both his craft and his students, Jonathan Walker-VanKuren continues to inspire and uplift aspiring musicians while fostering a culture of inclusivity and accessibility in the performing arts. As the curtain rises on this sensory-friendly performance, it serves as a shining example of the transformative power of music and the boundless potential for artistic expression to unite and uplift us all.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Host Luisa Lyons chats with Doug Reside, curator of the Billy Rose Theatre Division at the New York Public Library and author of Fixing the Musical: How Technology Shaped the Broadway Repertory, which looks at how the musicals that we remember, and the ones that are  the most performed, are the musicals that were able to use the technologies of their time such as cast recordings, sheet music, and video, to document and share the work with those who would never see the original production on stage.Doug shares his background in English and Computer Science, the challenges of preserving theatre history and the challenges of digital preservation, and we dive into his book Fixing the Musical and the fascinating history behind filming Broadway for public distribution, what needs to happen to make film recordings as ubiquitous as cast recordings, and how you can access the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive at the New York Public Library! Doug Reside is the Curator of the Billy Rose Theatre Division at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and manages all aspects of the division's collections and public services. He joined NYPL in 2011 first as the digital curator for the performing arts before assuming his current position in 2014. Prior to joining NYPL, Reside served on the directorial staff of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities at the University of Maryland. In this special crossover episode, host Luisa Lyons chats with Ebony Vines and Pamela Shandrow of the Theatre Geeks Anonymous podcast. Join us as we nerd out about musical theatre and take a look at three short-running Broadway musicals that were all filmed live: At the Drop of a Hat (1962) starring British comedy duo Flanders and Swann, Show Girl (1961) starring Carol Channing, and Allegiance (2017) starring George Takei, Telly Leung, and Lea Salonga.Guest BiosEbony Vines is a writer, director, producer and the co-host of Theatre Geeks Anonymous. Ebony's love of musical theatre was passed down from her late Mother who loved to watch musical movies with her daughter while grading her students' homework. After a long conversation with her friend Pamela about growing up a theater geek, obsessively listening to cast recordings and also loving true crime, they created the podcast Theatre Geeks Anonymous. At a very young age, Pamela Shandrow knew she wanted to be an actress. It was at 10 years old, when she watched the PBS version of Into The Woods with Bernadette Peters, that she decided her future would be in musical theatre! Since then she's performed in numerable regional shows, but is most proud of her work in the Broadway National Tours of Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked, as ensemble/Carlotta US and ensemble/Madame Morrible US respectively.Show LinksTheatre Geeks Anonymous At the Drop of a Hat Show Girl AllegianceSupport the showFilmed Live Musicals is where musicals come home. Teruyo & Lennox are theatre artists in cult recovery, currently hard at work on a musical inspired by their personal experiences in a shamanic cult. They explore what it's like to break away from high-demand influence, while offering a socio-political deconstruction of the colonial headspace that informs it. Music from the play's soundtrack is woven throughout this powerful conversation, which touches upon a whole helluva lot in an hour. Teruyo & Lennox describe how crafting a musical - both in storyline and soundtrack - enables them to give greater voice and vehicle to the trauma they've experienced. Teruyo shares: how their upbringing and mixed-racial identity primed them to 'cult hop' and spend sixteen years in devotion to their last cult; how the so-called 'Freedom Convoy' in January 2022 was the final straw that inspired them break free; and how their own internalized white supremacy kept them 'in' the cult and separate-from their Japanese heritage for most of their life. Lennox opens up about their own early in life conditioning, Baptist summer camps, and time spent in a coercive and controlling relationship prior to joining the shamanic cult the musical is based on. They invite us to challenge our collective hyper-fixation on narcissistic cult leaders, turning our attention instead toward understanding why it is that the 'spells' cultic leaders cast over us work so damn well. Music brings dimension to this conversation, as we dive even deeper into what it might actually mean to decolonize the work of cult recovery. How are our cult experiences microcosms of systemic oppression? And why is anti-colonial, anti-racism work so essential and relevant to holistic cult recovery? Teruyo & Lennox apply their neurodivergent artistry to these questions, and it results in what is perhaps this pod's most unique and sound-rich conversation to date.Teruyo (they/them) is a racialized queer, neurodiverse, non-binary theatre artist, anti-oppression activist and academic. Teruyo's encounter with cults and the aftermath of manipulative mind games have fueled their drive to delve into healing and reclaiming identity through anti-colonial and anti-racist cult recovery. Through their academic research and the creation and production of original plays and musical theatre, they aspire to amplify the marginalized voices of the global majority, foster socio-political change, and cultivate trauma-informed artistry.Lennox (they/them) is a neurodiverse, non-binary, queer theatre artist. They've endured the clutches of multiple cults, ranging from religious and spiritual to white supremacy. Ditching society's expectations and cultural boundaries, they've fully embraced their love for writing musicals, giving toxic masculinity the finger. Their creative outlet? Crafting badass socio-political musical stories that resonate with their true calling. They're rewriting the rules and reclaiming their rightful place behind the instruments.Guest Vocalists: Aleyah Erin Lennon & Carter HickeySupport the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content.
