I couldn't be more excited to share this episode with you! Ryan Shelton has been on the top of my guest wish list since I started Pass Around the Smile. His episode on the Imperfects Podcast on Shame, Jealousy and Purpose changed my life. And today, I hope this episode can have a similar effect on my beautiful community!Ryan and I have a very open, casual, yet vulnerable conversation about the struggles we have both faced within the film and television industry. We dive into everything from rejection and competition, to the emotional resilience it takes to keep going ~ and the tough inner dialogue that shows up when we feel like we've failed. Ryan is so generous in sharing his thoughts ~ which I know will help my Smilie's feel understood on many different levels. We also chat about how our goals can shift over time, and how doing the inner work can reveal that the big milestone we were chasing may not actually be what brings us happiness. Often, we place so much pressure on one “peak moment” that we forget to celebrate the beautiful things happening in between. This episode is a powerful reminder that joy, success, and fulfilment aren't reserved for some far-off finish line ~ they're available to us now, in the everyday.A BIT ABOUT RYAN: Ryan Shelton is a writer, actor, comedian, producer and podcast host who somehow manages to keep heart at the centre of everything he does. From Rove Live to We Can Be Heroes, to writing for award-winning shows with Hamish and Andy, his creative work has shaped some of Australia's most iconic entertainment. But it's his honest, vulnerable work on The Imperfects podcast that's creating a deeper kind of impact ~ helping people feel seen, heard, and understood. I know, because one episode in particular changed my life.Listen to Ryan's episode on The Imperfects on Shame, Jealousy and Purpose here. Meeting Sean Gunn, Daniel Logan, & Vivien Lyra Blair! Superman, Star Wars, Marvel, DC & MORE! Greg Alba hosts a high-energy panel at MultiCon featuring Sean Gunn (Maxwell Lord Superman: Legacy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Creature Commandos), Daniel Logan (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars), and Vivien Lyra Blair (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bird Box, We Can Be Heroes). The conversation kicks off with a celebration of fandoms—Marvel, DC, and Star Wars—and quickly dives into exclusive updates and heartfelt stories. Sean Gunn discusses his role in Superman: Legacy, his work as Rocket Raccoon's on-set reference, and reflects on working with his brother, James Gunn, while teasing the rumor of him playing Maxwell Lord in Superman. Daniel Logan shares insights into growing up as young Boba Fett, voicing the character in The Clone Wars, and his hopes of returning to Star Wars. He dives into the evolution of Boba's identity and his personal bond with Temuera Morrison. Vivien Lyra Blair talks about playing young Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi, the possibility of a teenage Leia series, and how her martial arts background influenced her stunt-heavy roles in We Can Be Heroes and Obi-Wan Kenobi. She also shares hilarious stories about internet rumors surrounding her non-existent "brother" and her five cats. The panel takes fun turns, from debates on Skeleton Crew being more Goonies or Stranger Things to Sean's deep dive into mocap acting and his approach to portraying quirky characters like Weasel and Rocket Raccoon. The trio also reflects on fatherhood, mentorship, and the evolving dynamics of Hollywood franchises. MultiCon brought together some incredible talent, including Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay & Silent Bob), Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead), Rob Liefeld (Deadpool), Straw Hat Goofy (TikTok's Movie Guy), Yuri Lowenthal (Spider-Man 2), Seth Green (Family Guy, Robot Chicken), Tara Platt (Naruto), Isaac Robinson-Smith (Transformers: EarthSpark), Michael Cudlitz (The Walking Dead), Khary Payton (Teen Titans Go!, The Walking Dead), Scott Gimple (The Walking Dead), Kel Mitchell (Kenan & Kel), Monique Coleman (High School Musical), KayCee Stroh (High School Musical), Shar Jackson (Moesha), and Jason Carl (Vampire: The Masquerade), along with Dungeons & Dragons legends. This week's BEHIND THE LENS is all about action and fun thanks to our exclusive interviews with directors SCOTT WAUGH and ROBERT RODRIGUEZ as we take a look at the latest additions to two beloved franchises – EXPEND4BLES and SPY KIDS ARMAGEDDON! First up, take a listen to my exclusive interview with director SCOTT WAUGH talking all things EXPEND4BLES! A lot of talking about the action, martial arts, stunt work, and explosions…lots of explosions… not to mention the fun of the franchise and this latest addition. And how about an inverted motorcycle jump atop an "aircraft carrier"? A real wow moment to be sure. And yes folks, EXPEND4BLES really is a rock 'em, shock 'em, blow 'em all to hell thrill ride! Then it's all about family fun as in this exclusive interview with director/editor/cinematographer/co-writer ROBERT RODRIGUEZ talking about his new film, SPY KIDS ARMAGEDDON. A film for families made by a family, Robert talks about working with his son Racer Max in writing the script and developing its themes while his son Rebel does the music on the film (as he did with "We Can Be Heroes"), and all of the Rodriguez kids worked on developing the actual video game which is at the center of the film, not to mention kicked in ideas for the costuming. (And yes! You can buy the video game.) It's a real family affair of fun and adventure! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
With the Writers Guild of America strike underway, the plight of television writers—especially their treatment in the age of streaming and artificial intelligence—is garnering new, and overdue, attention. Matt and Sam are joined by two friends of the podcast, Will Arbery and Dorothy Fortenberry, who write for major television shows: Will is a writer for HBO's Succession, and Dorothy for Apple TV+'s Extrapolations. They discuss how they write about political topics and themes, such as rightwing political candidates or the effects of climate change, in these fraught times, when the demands of good art can seem in tension with a simplistic and moralistic culture. Also discussed: parents, children, and families, now and in the coming climate crisis; how and whether people can change; and, of course, the WGA strike and why it matters.Sources Cited:Michael Schulman, "Why Are TV Writers So Miserable," The New Yorker, Apr 29, 2023Alex Press, "TV Writers Say They're Striking to Stop the Destruction of Their Profession," Jacobin, May 3, 2023.Sam Adler-Bell, "Succession's Repetition Compulsion," The Nation, Nov 10, 2021.Pope Francis, Laudato si' (“On Care for Our Common Home”), May 2015Listen to previous Know Your Enemy episodes with these guests:"We Can Be Heroes" (w/ Will Arbery), November 11, 2019"Suburban Woman" (w/ Dorothy Fortenberry), October 29, 2020"Living at the End of Our World" (w/ Daniel Sherrell & Dorothy Fortenberry), September 2, 2021...and don't forget to subscribe to Know Your Enemy on Patreon for access to all of our bonus episodes!

Today I talk with Taylor Duerr. Taylor is a Professional Boxer, and throughout his life he has battled addiction. Taylor grew up in 10 Mile Michigan, right outside of Detroit. If you've seen the movie 8 Mile with Eminem, you have a good idea about what 10 Mile is like. The documentary “We Can Be Heroes” is centered around Taylor, boxing, and the fight against addiction. The filmmaker Michael Ramsdell had this to say about Taylor and the film; “Commonly people think of addicts as weak, or as lazy, or they don't care about anybody else, or they can't handle the tough part of life,” Ramsdell says, but Duerr cuts through all of those misconceptions. The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are reconsidering whether or not it's actually worth it to ever watch another Woody Allen movie, especially after they talk about the painful experience that is 1993's light-hearted "Manhattan Murder Mystery. They also discuss Christopher Nolan's "Insomnia" remake from 2002, a much much better movie experience. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 355 includes: -R.I.P. Anne Heche and director Wolfgang Peterson. -"Secret Headquarters" makes "We Can Be Heroes" look better. -"Bullet Train" is a movie that knows exactly what it wants. -Switch the Pitch -- "Manhattan Murder Mystery" / "Insomnia" -The guys discuss Woody Allen's "quirky" mystery and their general distaste for the man and his sense of comedy, and then praise the 2002 Christopher Nolan "Insomnia" thriller as an example of what Hollywood filmmaking can be with the right people and vision. After, they pitch a project combining both elements that will be better than "Manhattan Murder Mystery" for sure.

For this episode I chose a classic David Bowie song for the title. Again if you hadn't noticed....all the episode titles are either song lyrics or titles. Considering this episode contains the first two race reports, We Can Be Heroes seemed like an appropriate title. Even more so since one of the lyrics is "I wish you could swim. like dolphins could swim" and one of these races was very much in the rain. We have another edition of Mailbag for this episode as well so we have a really big shoe! I'm certain Ed Sullivan never really said that but it sounds good! Enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/james-daly6/message
When Taylor Duerr first stepped onto the professional fight scene, he was already kind of a big deal. Not just because of his size, because of his heart. He's had plenty of nicknames in his career and Duerr, a former cruiserweight champion is the star of a newly released documentary, "We Can Be Heroes." Taylor joins the guys just before the launch of the film and the "Machine Gun" fires on about some of the cool stuff that happens when promoting a movie, his true love for his family and opens up about the real struggles he's faced as a recovering addict. Yea, you read that right, one of the Detroit's biggest and baddest fighters faces more than opponents in the ring. He carries a monkey on his back too. And he made a movie about it. You'll have to download the episode to hear more... but if you like stories about work ethic and comeback kids, let this dude inspire you. We also talk about Naruto... and the psychological meanings behind key plot elements of the entire show. Believe it, cause it's true.
