In August of 2017, a 22-year-old film student in Philadelphia was murdered after a night out. What started as a missing persons case quickly evolved into a murder investigation after her remains were found in a storage shed. And it was soon discovered that her killer had transported her body over 100 miles in a Lyft before disposing of her. This is the story of Jenna Burleigh. Welcome back to the podcast, Blake Brouillette! If you missed our previous conversation, check that out here!We talk about the services Christ in the City provides in the city of Denver. The purpose is twofold: to form missionaries, and to serve the poor in the chronically homeless. The hope is that this mission will expand beyond Denver into other communities in need!I share how "Blessing Bags", an idea Blake shared with me previously, has changed our family's life. We talk about what it means to see others not as strangers, but as someone who needs love. We also talk about the absolutely indispensable need for community as the basis of mission life (you can't serve strangers if you don't love the people you live with!) We also each share our experiences of thinking we could change the world, and being humbled by what we could learn from the poor. Blake shares some wisdom about finding your own Calcutta, and figuring out how to serve exactly where you are. If doing something about homelessness is on your heart, please donate to Christ in the City and help them serve and expand! Join Christ in the City on October 2nd for a Virtual Annual Celebration (check the website for details). Challenge from Blake: Look to your left. Look to your right. See who are the poor in your community, and find your own Calcutta! HEY YOU! Yep. You. Are you Pam Beesly, Kelly Kapoor, or Jim Halpert? Could you possibly be Dwight? No idea what I'm talking about? On Thanksgiving weekend, eight-year-old Rose and her mom Sherri delivered meals to a homeless encampment in Atlanta, GA. While there, several people asked if they had blankets so Rose and Sherri gave away the two blankets that they kept in the car for family outings. Then with tears in her eyes, Rose asked her mom if they could go and find more blankets. Months later, Sherri and Rose are still out there trying to help meet the needs of their unhoused neighbors. They now call their effort Blessing Bags of Warmth for the Homeless, and to date, they have helped over 1,000 homeless individuals in the Atlanta area. ----- Music for Helpful Humans is provided by the amazing K. Do what you can with what you have where you are. - Theodore Roosevelt As we wrapped up our 31-Day Kindness Campaign on November 13 (World Kindness Day), we were overwhelmed with the stories that came flooding in about the impact the campaign had on those who participated. We had over 20 pages of stories from people, so we asked some of them to share their stories with the world. What an amazing #ripplefromtheheartland we created – let’s keep it going, tribe! Join us as we talk about: What beautiful acts of kindness participants have done during our 31-Day Kindness Campaign. What words of guidance participants want to share with people who have also faced or are currently facing a difficult time in their life. Different acts of kindness they have done for strangers and how it has rippled throughout their own inner circles and beyond. How tapping into your talents and sharing it with others can do so much good for your community. Other acts of kindness you can participate in such as Blessing Bags to keep the wave going. Why being intentional about kindness is also self therapeutic. How Small Changes Big Shifts is getting geared up for our 40 Days of Gratitude Campaign
Welcome back my friends for Episode 26 of the Derate the Hate podcast. I am Wilk from WilksWorld.com and I am so grateful that you have taken the time to join us for this episode! It almost goes without saying, but as anyone who's turned on a television, radio or spent any time on social media knows, we are just a couple weeks away from one of the most contentious elections any of us have witnessed in our lifetimes. As most of our regular listeners know, I do my best to keep political issues out of this podcast, and this episode is no exception. What I am referring to is the chaos and degradation of our society that is resulting from tribalism based on peoples' political beliefs, driven by politicians and the media. What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? These two questions do a lot to drive our mission statement at the Derate the Hate podcast, Bettering the world, on attitude at a time. There are many obstacles that stand in the way for each of us as individuals. Being able to recognize those obstacles helps us to overcome them. Once you gain the understanding that many politicians, and those in the media have a vested interest in keeping us divided, mad &/or scared, things start to become much more clear when it comes to the world in which we live. We, as individuals, must not allow those in politics and the media to drive our emotions, to put a wedge between us, and to keep us cowering and waiting for the next bit of chaos or crisis. We must not allow the division and degradation of our society. Do not allow those who have a vested interest in division make the boundaries by which you live your life. #DerateTheHate Have you heard about a young many by the name of Jahkil Jackson and his Project I Am? This youngster has got something very special going on and our regular listeners know, I love a story where ordinary people are doing extraordinary things! I would have to say this young man far surpasses that criteria. At age 8, young Jahkil started Project I Am where he puts together "Blessing Bags" for the homeless and those who have fallen on hard times. You have to check out the podcast to hear more about this youngster and his charity. What a true hero and inspiration this now 12 year old young man is to so many.Again, I will ask you, what have you done today to make the world a better place? What have you done today to make your life a better life? Get out there, be kind to one another, be grateful for everything you've got, and remember, it's up to you to make each and every day the day that you want it to be!If you find anything you've heard here in our podcast beneficial, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter &/or subscribe to us wherever you may get your podcasts.
