Inequality reporter Stephanie Convery returns on a trip with Liz and Ben into the world of banking, high finance and monetary theory in Terry Pratchett's thirty-sixth Discworld novel, 2007's Making Money. The Ankh-Morpork Post Office is running very smoothly - which has left Moist von Lipwig, reformed con-man and Postmaster General, at a loose end. But he resists the Patrician's offer of a new job revitalising the Royal Mint and Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork. The bank's current owner is a Mark 1 Feisty Old Lady who knows her rich family are out to get her - and her little dog, too. But despite Moist's best attempts to not get involved, both dog and bank wind up in his care - putting him in the sights of the Lavish family, and especially Vetinari-obsessed Cosmo Lavish. Meanwhile, manager of the Golem Trust (and Moist's fiancée) Adora Belle Dearheart is digging up something ancient out on the desert. And Moist's past is about to catch up with him... Just a few novels after debuting in Going Postal, Moist von Lipwig is back! Making Money is about the nature of money, but also about the thrill of the chase, grappling with one's inner nature, and obsession. Aside from Gladys the Golem, Moist and Adora Belle bring few of their previous supporting cast along for the ride; instead we meet a new cast including Mr Bent, the Lavishes, another Igor, the Post-Mortem Communications Department of Unseen University, and the very good boy Mr Fusspot. Does this live up to the promise of Going Postal? Could Moist be in other Discworld books in disguise - and if so, as who? Did you guess Mr Bent's secret? And if you had a Glooper, what would you use it to change in the world of money? No purchase necessary to join the conversation for this episode; just email us or use the hashtag #Pratchat80 on social media. Stephanie Convery (she/her) is is a writer and author. Previously the Deputy Culture Editor for The Guardian Australia, she's now their dedicated inequality reporter. Stephanie's first book, After the Count: The Death of Davey Browne, was published in March 2020 by Penguin Books. (We suspect it won't be her last.) You can follow Stephanie on Twitter at @gingerandhoney, and find her work at Guardian Australia. Her previous appearances on Pratchat were for #Pratchat2, “Murdering a Curry” (about Mort), and #Pratchat42, “Truth, the Printing Press, and Every -ing” (about The Truth). You'll find full notes and errata for this episode on our website...though not just yet. Watch out for it soon! In the meantime, the newly recovered story in A Stroke of the Pen is “Arnold, the Bominable Snowman” (we've not yet found it online). Also, here's the free Quickstart for the Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork roleplaying game; it's also available via DriveThruRPG. The Kickstarter launches on 15 October. Those three upcoming Discworld plays in Australia are The Fifth Elephant from Brisbane Arts Theatre from 19 October; Maskerade by Sporadic Productions in Adelaide from 30 October; and Guards! Guards! from Roleystone Theatre in Perth from 22 November. Next episode we're continuing our Moist streak (sorry) with the (so far) latest Discworld board game: Clacks! In a revealing and candid episode to open Season 6, Chris Abraham embarks on an introspective journey into the heart of his life's experiences and unique worldview. Starting with an exploration of his potential 'aphantasia,' he delves into how this unusual trait—being unable to voluntarily produce visual images—shaped his illustrious career in photography and subsequently molded his profound way of perceiving the world. The episode takes an intricate turn as Chris unearths layers of his personal attractions, with a particularly keen interest in hairstyles. From the appeal of blunt bobs, the allure of long bangs, to the aversion of certain bang styles, Chris's affections serve as a fascinating window into the intricacies of human attraction. He warmly humorizes the topic, sharing amusing anecdotes of others claiming he could be swayed by even a mop donning a bob wig. Digging deeper, Chris touches on past relationships and their enduring impressions on his psyche, notably with Stephanie Austin. Their deep connection, untimely separation, and the lingering lack of closure form a poignant narrative core that listeners will find both relatable and emotionally resonant. But the episode doesn't stop there. Chris navigates the multifaceted world of 'wokeness,' dissecting its significance in contemporary culture. He emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting signifiers—visual or behavioral cues that offer insight into someone's identity or beliefs—in today's rapidly changing social landscape. This leads to a broader discussion about societal progress and the paramount importance of empathy and understanding in our interactions. As the conversation unfolds, Chris brings up his knowledge from studying fields as diverse as film theory, deconstructionism, and Marxist feminist theory. These academic backgrounds offer listeners a theoretical framework to further understand his perspectives on subjects like the 'male gaze.' To conclude, Chris muses on how his unique way of seeing has shaped his interactions, from understanding societal signifiers to adapting his approach based on them. His emphasis on being present, observing without preconceived projections, and truly seeing what's in front of him serves as a resonant lesson for listeners in this fast-paced age of distraction. Aphantasia: A condition where one cannot voluntarily produce visual images in their mind. Wokeness: Originating from the African-American community, this term has evolved to signify a heightened awareness about social injustices, especially those centered around race. Signifiers: Symbols or indicators used to signify something beyond their immediate meaning. Male Gaze: A term from feminist theory describing the depiction of women and the world from a masculine, often heterosexual, perspective. Sigma Male: A term used in sociosexual hierarchy to describe men who prefer to live outside the hierarchy rather than climb to the top. These men are self-sufficient and choose their own path rather than being outwardly dominant. Post-Modernist Theory: An intellectual stance or mode of discourse defined by an attitude of skepticism toward what it describes as the grand narratives and ideologies of modernism. Deconstructionism: A method of literary and philosophical analysis that questions the fundamental conceptual distinctions in the text, by means of which ambiguity and multiple meanings arise. Marxist Feminist Theory: An ideological standpoint that uses Marxist theory to understand the capitalist sources of the oppression of women. Lesbian Signifiers: Observable elements, often culturally or community specific, that might indicate a lesbian identity or affiliation. Pronouns: Words that replace nouns in order to prevent repetition or specify a certain perspective. In the context of gender identity, people use pronouns to convey their gender identity, such as "he/him," "she/her," or "they/them." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/support

Some mornings you wake up and you look at social media first thing.  You might see friends in their pictures in the VIP popping bottles in the club.  They're on vacation in exotic places.  Having fun.  Eating food.  Taking adventures out in the wilderness.  This leaves you feeling like you're losing in life because you're not doing great, or living your best life.  You can't believe the highlight reels of other people. They have problems just like you.  Chances are, they're only sharing something they did and documented 6 months before hand.  I know those people.  They take a few trips and head back to work in the office, strapped to the desk, but no one wants to see highlight reels with people strapped to desks.  Most of what you see on social media is fake.  I know because I know some of those people.  I know because the days I've posted awesome things about my life be it, a new car, a win at work, a win with my family, there may have been something in the background happeninig I don't share with the world.  Everyone does it.  So, let this be a message for you to help you with your mental health........ Don't Believe the highlight reels.  Do you.  Live your life.  Share all of it.  Tell stories.  Share lessons.  Experiences.  You'll find you'll have more people engaging for raw vulnerability based in truth, instead of the fantasy of the highlight reels.  #RiseAbove  HOW TO GET INVOLVED:  This planet is based on an algorithm and with every positive action, there is an adverse reaction.  Ryan Stewman rose and overcame a life of addiction, imprisonment, divorce, and circumstances that would break the spirit of the average human being.  He went on to create a powerful network of winners and champions in life and business creating a movement quickly changing lives one day at a time.  Learn more at: www.JoinTheApex.com   Check out this show and previous killer episodes of the ReWire Podcast in Apple Podcasts.
