It was at GenCon many years ago when GenCon was in Milwaukee and the Safehouse was the place to be.At the time all I knew was that Call of Cthulhu was a horror roleplaying game. The idea sounded cool and the game fit into my schedule so why not.I had a blast.It truly was a wonderful game that fundamentally changed many of my thoughts around table top roleplaying. It wasn't just swords and sorcery, there were other worlds out there to be explored.After the game I realized that Call of Cthulhu wasn't just a neat game. It was based on an entire world created by author H.P. Lovecraft. I had copies of “At the Mountains of Madness” and “The Shadow of Innsmouth” in my hands by the end of the week.I think that is where my love of games that come from Intellectual Properties or IPs came from.What's an IP you ask? Well simply put it is a creation of the mind typically found in inventions, literature, film, or any other medium that a person can apply for a patent, trademark, copyright, etc.While D&D was built on the backs of Tolkien's middle earth and Howard's Conan it wasn't specifically set in that world. Traveller leaned heavily into the old Sci-Fi serials like Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Dumarest of Terra, but it was its own thing. As far as I can tell Call of Cthulhu is the first roleplaying game truly built on an IP.But it wasn't the last.Star Wars, Star Trek, Middle Earth Role Playing, Marvel Superhero's, DC Adventures and James Bond 007 all followed quickly. Today as I glance at my gaming bookshelf, I notice a trend.Games based on IP's.From Aliens to Farscape, From the One Ring to Monster Hunter International, From Blade Runner to Star Trek, from Star Wars to The Expanse and from Conan to James Bond. I love the IPs.In this week's episode Mike, Christina and I are going to talk about Intellectual Property Games. We will also be taking your questions! Michael Jan Friedman is the author of nearly 70 books of fiction and non-fiction, about half of them set somewhere in the wilds of the Star Trek universe. In 1992 Friedman wrote Reunion, the first Star Trek: The Next Generation hardcover, which introduced the crew of the Stargazer, Captain Jean-Luc Picard's first command. Over the years, the popularity of Reunion has spawned a number of Stargazer stories in both prose and comic book formats, including a six-novel original series. Friedman has also written for the Aliens, Predator, Wolf Man, Lois and Clark, DC Super Hero, Marvel Super Hero, and Wishbone licensed book universes. Eleven of his book titles, including the autobiography Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Ghost Hunting (written with SciFi's Ghost Hunters), have appeared on the prestigious New York Times primary bestseller list, and his novel adaptation of the Batman & Robin movie was for a time the #1 bestselling book in Poland (really). Friedman has worked at one time or another in network and cable television, radio, business magazines, and the comic book industry, in the process producing scripts for nearly 180 comic stories. Among his comic book credits is the Darkstars series from DC Comics, which he created with artist Larry Stroman, and the Outlaws limited series, which he created with artist Luke McDonnell. He also co-wrote the story for the acclaimed second-season Star Trek: Voyager episode “Resistance,” which guest-starred Joel Grey. Dentists and Dental Labs work together to make kids smile, one of the happiest, most beautiful moments in the world. This holiday season we're furthing the cause by partnering with the community on a Holiday Toy Drive for the kids at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee! We want to show our appreciation to all the dentists, technicians, and members of the community, and this is one small way we can give back. (Details below) Donations will be collected from Dec 2 through Dec 9 at our office and other locations in Greater Milwaukee. Toys will be delivered to Children's Hospital in the afternoon on December 9, 2022. (Keep scrolling for more info) The Why: Helping the kids is a cause that's near and dear to many of our team members because, similar to how dentists and dental technicians help to create wonderful smiles every day, there's nothing like seeing a kid smile. Oftentimes kids will be in the hospital and the families will be saddled with medical bills, making it hard to afford gifts for the holidays. This is our opportunity to help and do something that will make the children smile. A few notes from the hospital: All donations must be brand new and in the original packaging (not gift wrapped). Kindly keep things to a grab-and-go-size that's about 12 inches or smaller. The only hand-made items they accept are knit hats for toddler and above, in addition to fleece blankets. What does the hospital need? Right now they need items for infants. Rattles, teethers, and blankets. They also needs books. They go through 10,000+ books a year so they welcome books for all reading levels and ages. Legos, Stuffed Animals, and Marvel Superhero toys are also in demand.
