The tradition of telling hunting stories goes back to some of the earliest discovered cave drawings known to man. While the medium for telling these stories has changed over millennia, stories of the hunt are how we share and connect with something that is so fundamentally human. Whether it's the tales of the hunt, the misadventures, our passions for the pursuit or our love of wildlife and wild places, sharing the story is how we connect to something that awakens the soul. On this episode of the Turkey Call All Access Podcast, the NWTF's Paul Campbell sits down with Brent Rogers, Doc Weddle and Michael Simpson to revisit the Bottomland Book Club seminar from the 2024 NWTF Convention and Sport Show and talk turkey history, literature, hunting and more!

Anglers know that many fish species depend on the structure that trees provide. Habitat, such as standing timber, blow downs, snags, and cypress trees are popular places to fish in lakes and streams. But what about when the river leaves the riverbed and enters the bottomland forest? It turns out that this “flooded forest” habitat is critical for many fish species. Most lowland rivers used to seasonally flood into the surrounding forests, which could remain inundated for months at a time. These areas were important to spawning, early life history, and feeding ecology of many important fish species. Today, many rivers have lost this connection due to river regulation for navigation and flood control, with consequence for many river species that depended on flooded forests. In this episode, Wes discusses the value of flooded forests and ways we can improve our highly regulated rivers with Dr. Sandra Correa. Do you have questions or comments? Follow the Fish University Facebook community and chat with Wes or suggest future episodes!

Chris and Brent talk about a project that Chris did back in 2015. Although his farm was producing great deer numbers and some quality bucks, Chris felt like it was lacking in cover nesting habitat. Listen as he talks about the process of identifying the right area and taking on a project that would seem counter intuitive to most hunters and landowner, especially almost a decade ago.
Not every consultation is created equal. Recently we travel to North Mississippi to work a bottom land floodplain forest property. These sites always have their challenges but we were in for a exciting spin on managing Bottomland forest this week. After spending several hours on the property, we were stumped the time being. Understanding the function of a property is critical to then making quality recommendations, but the function of this farm was way out of sorts. We break down how we approached this challenging farm and determined how to best strategize access and plan. We stuck to the Land andLegacy habitat management principles and these guiding principles revealed the next best steps. Not every farm is going to be clear, cut, and dry. This farm requires extra attention to detail to realize its full potential. It also requires a landowner to be humble and work with Creation in their pursuit of reaching their goals.

Episode 4: In this episode, we take our first look at modern agriculture on this Flyway. Timber companies in North Louisiana and Eastern Arkansas, like we’ve seen before, clear cut trees all the way off the landscape here, but this time they put something ...entirely different in its place. We’ll get a rare glimpse inside the forgotten forests that covered this place before farm country was farm country. We’ll meet the farm families who became the custodians of a new land of soy and corn. And discover how farming’s evolution into yet another one of America’s billion dollar industries has taken a different kind of toll on community in the heartland. To learn more about the project, visit www.voicesofaflyway.com/explore to start exploring our 6 interactive story maps that feature more of the stories, photos, and videos of the project! Funded by an Explorer grant from National Geographic, our team - a soundscape recordist, an audio producer, and a wildlife photographer - traveled from the Louisiana coastline to the Boundary Waters of Minnesota with the 2019 spring songbird migration. We visited six at-risk ecosystems along the route to uncover: 1. Why each of these delicate ecosystems is so critical to bird migration. 2. The infinite ways that people living in these areas share connections to the natural world. 3. What stands to be lost as these ecosystems vanish?

Adam Crews listens to Mike Higman ramble about hunting for over an hour. OK, not really, but something like that. The truth is, we had some things fall through with some deer and turkey hunting experts and wanted to cover some interesting topics and get a little deeper into what makes us tick as hunters. If you think Mike & Adam are interesting, you’ll love it. If you think they are better hosts when keeping their mouths shut, see you in episode 36.
