In the latest episode of Business Inspires, we had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Eric Hutchison of Hutchison Consulting. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:• Employee engagement and satisfaction are at the forefront of organizational psychology, and a sense of belonging is a significant predictor of employee engagement, which is essential in this labor market.• Strategic planning and aligning employees and resources with an organization's vision and goals are crucial for growth and idea generation.• Understanding individuals' different problem-solving approaches is crucial in identifying what may work best for your organization.• Strategic planning is an ongoing process that should be top of mind regularly, and communication between employees, senior leadership, and entry-level workers is essential. When employees understand how their work contributes to the organization's overall goals, they are more likely to feel a sense of ownership and purpose. The benefits are engagement, productivity, and innovation. Some things businesses can do to align people with strategy include:• Involve all levels of employees in the strategic planning process. Including employees gives them a sense of ownership and helps them to understand how their job supports the mission and vision of the organization.• Communicate strategy clearly and consistently. When employees understand the plan, why it is essential, and how their job contributes, their role clarity can improve.• Reward employees for achieving strategic goals. Rewarding employees in a way that contributes to their motivation shows that you understand them, their work is valued, and their contributions make a difference.• Create a culture of continuous learning and development. Advancement helps employees to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies, which can help them to be more effective in their roles. These steps enable organizational leaders to create a sense of belonging and a successful business. Employees who feel part of something bigger than themselves are more likely to be engaged and productive. The result can be increased profits, customer satisfaction, and innovation.Interested in the free employee Experience Consultation Dr. Eric mentions in this podcast? My guest is Michael Fair, Jr. D.D.S. He and his wife, Dr. Hetal Vaidya, own the Arlington Dental Group practice. At https://uadentalgroup.com/ (Arlington Dental Group), they have assumed a new level of responsibility for their patients. They pride ourselves on Complete Health Dentistry to meet the oral wellness needs of your entire family. Dr. Fair dives a bit deeper into what they mean by Complete Health Dentistry. The mouth is the gateway to the body. You can't have a healthy body without a healthy mouth. Dr. Fair, Dr. Vaidya, and their staff educate their patients on this systemic link between the mouth and the body. They want their patients to understand that disease of the mouth raises their risk of other inflammatory diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. They don't just clean your teeth and fill your cavities; they pride themselves on helping their patients to achieve complete health and wellness in every aspect of their dental care. To run a successful business, you need resources, valuable connections and community recognition. I welcome https://www.polypay.com/about (Jamie Barlett), founder of https://www.polypay.com/ (PolyPay), to the podcast and back to Ohio! How does a company that started in another state, eventually decide to move to Columbus? How do you start networking, basically from scratch? Jamie talks about how SHE is doing it, and it starts with working with the TriVillage Chamber Partnership! PolyPay is a recognized woman-owned provider of merchant processing services based out of San Luis Obispo, California. The company opened its doors in 2013 and ever since then they have continued to grow their footprint throughout California and beyond to over 10 other states. Now Jamie Barlett, the founder of PolyPay, is moving back to Ohio, and I talk with her about why she chose Columbus. The merchant processing industry is rife with companies who put their monetary goals before the well being of their merchant. PolyPay will never do that. Jamie founded PolyPay to turn those previous negative images into positive ones. Her goal is to do the right thing, always with their merchant in mind. As they continue to grow their merchant base and their capabilities, Jamie ensures that will never change. To run a successful business, you need resources, valuable connections and community recognition. YOUTH SPORTS ARE IN NEED OF REINVENTION Team sports are a dress rehearsal for life. In fact, there is no better tool to teach kids the skills necessary to succeed in life than sports. Yet, something has gone terribly wrong. Youth sports have been hijacked by adults, and kids are literally losing out. Learn more about our youth sports leagues and the i9 Sports difference. Our mission is to Help Kids Succeed in Life Through Sports.® When parents register their child under the age of 15 for a youth sports program, we think the program should fit their lifestyle, not the other way around. Parents should have the right to expect that their child will get quality instruction and be given an equal opportunity to develop their skills to the best of their ability… but in a format that doesn't require the child and family to put everything else in their lives second. Families seeking a highly competitive format with a win-at-all-cost culture will not feel at home in our leagues. Our format is unabashedly recreational as we reclaim youth sports for the millions of kids across the nation who just want to play sports as they should be… fun. That's the i9 Sports difference. We find out more from Karen and Duane Gray from https://www.i9sports.com/franchises/387/columbus-grove-city-clintonville (i9 Sports, offering youth sports programs in Columbus, Grove City, Clintonville). "Feed Like You Give A Damn" This is the motto of Fangs & Fur owners Danielle and Anthony Santilli. Fangs & Fur features a raw-food diet for your pet. That's what nature intended for dogs and cats, Santilli says. Over the past century, the introduction of dry food meant most pets are being given carbohydrate-rich, low-moisture diets, Santilli said. Most of the dry food is 45% to 75% carbs, and that's causing all kinds of bad results, like obesity in our pets, tooth decay and a lot of gut issues.Fangs & Fur offers fresh-frozen pet food, as well as meat-based dry food. “We understand a raw-pet-food diet is not for everyone, so we do offer some healthier dry-food options,” Santilli says, including brands that do not use any synthetic material. “But I think you should include at least some raw, high-moisture food, even if it's just treats, to accompany your pet's main food.” The store also carries raw goat's milk and bone broth to use as meal toppers and to add moisture and nutrients to pets that eat dry food. The store's “raw bar” offers freeze-dried treats, including duck heads, necks and hearts; pig snouts and ears; and turkey necks. As they state on their website... Fangs & Fur is a local, independent, and owner-operated shop that is committed to providing the dogs and cats in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio with the best possible foods, supplements, and gear available. They are continuously striving to learn more about our pets' health and nutrition and they only provide products that they have feverishly researched and trust. They know that feeding your pet the best food out there may not be the easiest option nor the cheapest, but they are here to present you with the most up-to-date information and the best products so that you can rest assured that you are doing your best for your pet. Also, we're a little different... "Our small shop is not your typical pet food store. We don't carry unnecessary pet supplies like a lot of other shops do. We do not saturate our little space with products that we don't believe in and feel are unnecessary. Our goal is to have a place full of positive vibes that you and your pet feel comfortable in, even if that means just stoping in to say hi and grabbing a treat on your walk!" David welcomes back to the podcast Amber Wilson from Fabtique. We get an update on how the shop is surviving through the pandemic, and looking to celebrate 4 years in business in October 2020! Inspired by the desire to help women feel confident in their own style, Pat Barker and Amber Wilson opened Fabtique in 2016 at the Shops on Lane Avenue in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Longtime friends, they combined their love of fashion with their professional experiences — Amber managed several White House/Black Market stores for almost a decade and Pat owned a small business as well as served as marketing director for the Ohio Tourism office. Their passion, as well as that of Fabtique's team of amazing stylists, is to provide personal, honest customer service, and a variety of unique clothes that help women look and feel fantastic. We turn the podcast interview microphone in the direction of David Polakowski, TVCP Executive Director. You normally hear David interview the guests we ask to be on Business Inspires. But we thought it was time you get to know David better. We cover questions like... What were you thinking you would be doing with your life when you graduated high school? Where were you before Columbus, and what were you doing? What interested you when you saw the executive director position was available at the TVCP? How has the pandemic changed what you want to accomplish as ED of the TVCP? What kept you up at night during the shutdown? What surprised you the most during this shutdown period about the chamber and the chamber members? How is the chamber and its members better prepared if something like this would happen again? Plus a few other insightful questions that we hope will help you get to know David even better. We talk with Kip Morse, President and CEO of the https://www.bbb.org/centralohio/get-to-know-us/about-us/key-staff/ (Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio.) The BBB is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2020. The BBB has about 2 million consumers that visit the local website each year to find businesses that they can trust and find out about scams or bad business practices that might be happening in the community. The membership years ago changed to an accreditation, which is an evaluation based on standards. The BBB has a process to evaluate businesses on standards relative to their advertising practices in general and on the internet, their licensing, how they handle complaints, whether they were previously associated with a company that had problems. All this to set standards for how to build trust with the consumers. During the first weeks of the COVID-19 quarantine, there were collaborations with chambers, associations and some of the government agencies. The idea was that the BBB wanted to be able to drive the public quickly to the resources that they need. Since the pandemic shutdown, now moving forward, every small business is now a startup and has to think that way. The hustle and the grind. Every small business is in that world now. Businesses are really trying to hyper focus on where they can be most relevant and valuable, and have the biggest impact. You need to focus on, and really take a hard look at who your customer base is. Focus on them. Care for them. www.trustlocal.org Thank you for downloading, listening and subscribing to Business Inspires, a https://chamberpartnership.org/ (TriVillage Chamber Partnership) podcast, presented by http://marblecliff.org/ (The Village of Marble Cliff). We welcome George Cleary, Found and Owner and Aaron Enfinger, General Manager, of https://clearycompany.com/ (The Cleary Company). Now at just a year at their new location and showroom, we talk about how their 26 years in business helped them weather the COVID-19 pandemic. https://www.google.com/maps/dir//989+Old+Henderson+Rd,+Columbus,+OH+43220/@40.051288,-83.0483111,17z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x88388daf9abb98f7:0xd669bbb266af9c02!2m2!1d-83.0461224!2d40.051288 (The Cleary Company) was classified as an essential business. But they knew they had a huge responsibility in keeping their clients and field employees safe. This included lots of research on safety measures, and following the suggested state of Ohio guidelines. The office staff worked from home, as did the designers. Collaboration took place virtually, as did client presentations of the design work for approval. As we all were at home more, we all took notice of improvements we needed. And https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_Y8cvonI19jU-Onvbws6cw (The Cleary Company) are seeing home projects still on the rise, including outdoor projects. What did they learn during the pandemic? With the help of https://takeactionbusinesscoaching.actioncoach.com/ (Action Coach Columbus), they saw opportunities to fine tune services they were sending away. The https://discover.bath2bath.com/ (bath2BATH) division in one example. Joining us in this episode is Peg Buehrle and Michelle Calcasola from https://takeactionbusinesscoaching.actioncoach.com/ (ActionCOACH Columbus). We have Peg and Michelle on for this episode because of their insights on how they help businesses see opportunities, rather than doom and gloom, during economic downturns. The business community as a whole is experiencing this now during the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you effectively work from home? From the business perspective, it's about accountability. Employee perspective, it's about balance of work and family within your home. Recommendations for small businesses with employees working from home? Communicate frequently. Have small huddles daily. Small businesses need to stick to your vision and goals. Don't compare what we are going through now to the Great Recession. Plus, look for government relief resources available now. What is imperative right now is for business owners to focus on the future. From the "essential businesses" perspective, there is still cash flow, but is still a stressful time. You still have employees, but you have to keep them safe. Marketing tactics during this time? Has to be changed, your message has to shift. Can your business pivot in the short term to keep employees and cash flow coming? This is changing the way we look at our individual businesses. This is and can be an opportunity for your business. Why continue being a chamber member? You're not alone, it is community. Plus, there may be chamber resources at your fingertips that you never realized were as valuable as they are right now. Stay tuned through the end of the episode to hear about a special offer from ActionCOACH Columbus happening in early April 2020. The business raised $25,000 through Kickstarter in 2015 toward the expansion and spent last year shopping for space until it landed on the Edgehill spot near Grandview Yard. After kicking around a few possibilities Lindsay Remley and husband/co-owner/co-founder Alex Remley centered on Edgework Creative. She said the multiple meanings of edge – literal edge work that is done in the shop, pushing the edges, even the street name of Edgehill – felt like a natural fit.
