The Praktiseer Magistrate's Court, outside Burgersfort, in the Limpopo province is expected to heard the case against two suspected kingpins allegedly behind illegal mining after they were arrested for allegedly being in possession of chrome valued at over 20-million rand.  They are believed to be directors of an organization that deals in the illegal trade of minerals. The man is accused of killing Matenche after she was reported missing in 2019, and then disposing for her body in a pit toilet at the Nthame Primary School in Riba Cross, Burgersfort. Exams quality assurer Umalusi is "deeply concerned" about detected cases of group copying in last year's National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams involving 945 candidates, including 763 from KwaZulu-Natal and 164 from Mpumalanga. Approving the release of the 2023 NSC results in Pretoria on Monday, Umalusi CEO Dr Mafu Rakometsi said, according to reports submitted, these were cases where the candidates displayed common answers and, in some cases, the same wrong and right answers. The NSC results will be released on Friday, a day after the Independent Board of Examinations results. "These cases are not yet resolved because the numbers are still being verified." He said another area of concern related to printing errors or poor print quality in some of the question papers. "There was an omission of a subscript on the formula of an organic compound in Physical Sciences paper 2 in question 2.2 for 3 marks." He said the Physical Sciences paper 2 in North West had missing grid lines in question 3.5 for six marks. "The three Civil Technology specialisations (Civil Services, Construction and Woodworking) in both the English and Afrikaans versions had major printing errors in Limpopo. "The poor print quality in the Civil Services specialisation affected questions worth 60 marks in the English version and 62 marks in the Afrikaans version. "In Construction questions worth of 31 marks in the English version and 14 marks in Afrikaans were affected." He said the marks affected in the Woodworking specialisation were 22 and 26 for English and Afrikaans, respectively. He said besides the printing quality, the translation quality was also something that needs careful attention. "Due to poor quality of translation from English into Afrikaans, candidates could not respond to questions 3.2.5 and 3.2.6 worth 3 marks in the Afrikaans version of Geography paper 1. "To mitigate the possible impact of these errors on performance of candidates, the questions concerned were excluded from the marking process and the marks achieved upscaled using conversion tables." Rakometsi said it was "regrettable" that one of the questions in the Mathematical Literacy Paper 1 naively used the words "mandatory Palestine". "This was caused by the examiners and moderators being unaware of the political connotations of the words. Umalusi appreciates the fact that the DBE [Department of Basic Education] issued an apology in this regard." He also provided an update on progress made in connection with the problem of selling and buying of fake and/or fraudulent certificates. Since Umalusi's state of readiness briefing on the matric exams on 13 October 2023, 11 suspects were arrested by police, including seven in Burgersfort in Limpopo on 27 October and 13 December, and four in November. Rakometsi said the Hawks arrested an employee of the Department of Higher Education and Training on 11 December for fraudulently issuing a diploma certificate for cash. "The suspect has been charged with corruption and his court case has been postponed to 19 January 2024." Professor Yunus Ballim, chairperson of Umalusi's council, said the Department of Basic Education is required to block the results of all candidates implicated in irregularities, including the candidates who are implicated in the alleged acts of dishonesty pending the outcome of the DBE investigations and verification by Umalusi. "Umalusi is concerned about the recurring instances of printing and packaging errors in question papers and the ongoing practice of group copying. "The DBE is required to address the directives for compliance and improvement highlighted in the Quality Assurance of Assessment report and submit an improvement plan by 15 March 2024." Ballim said that the executive committee of council commended the DBE for conducting a successful examination on such a large scale. The police and South African Defence Force have seized chrome stockpiles estimated at R15-million at ga-Phasha village, outside Burgersfort in Limpopo. The operation was part of measures by authorities to rid the mineral-rich Sekhukhune district of illegal mining operations. Lethabo Exploration, which started out as an exploration company, has since transitioned into mining iron-ore in Limpopo, and has secured an offtake agreement. Lethabo is 100% South African black-owned and to date, it has been 100% self-funded, which means the company has no external debt-funding obligations, Lethabo Exploration CEO Mandy Malebe told the Junior Indaba this week. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) “Lethabo's truly a first of its kind, with its director and executive body being local people born and bred in rural Limpopo, in the district of Sekhukhune, and having mining rights for projects and greenfield exploration in Sekhukhune, which takes in the areas such as Steelpoort and Burgersfort. That's home and it's also home to our mining projects. “Being local people from Sekhukhune and mining in our home area, our commitment to the development that we want to see there is personal because of the background that we have and also being exposed to the poverty there,” Malebe said in a presentation covered by Mining Weekly. Lethabo is affiliated to Minerals Council South Africa, of which it has been a member since 2020, and Malebe serves as one of the deputy chairs of the Exploration and Junior Miners Leadership Forum on the Junior and Emerging Miners Desk. At last week's Minerals Council annual general meeting, Malebe was appointed as a council board member. It is also associated to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), where it participates in the entrepreneurial accelerator programme, sponsored by Minerals Council South Africa. This programme is designed to help businesses to access investors and capital, as well as access funding through the option of listing on the JSE, which is seen as essentially increasing South Africa's employment status as a nation and contributing to the economy. The social economy which is within Lethabo's immediate reach is that of Sekhukhune, where it holds mining rights for iron-ore, vanadium, chrome, platinum-group metals, titanium and andalusite. Its mining rights cover the farms Malekskraal, Waterkop and Mecklenburg, situated on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. For mining continuity, it has secured the mining rights on the farms Waterkop and Mecklenburg, which are neighbouring farms along the R37 provincial route, and mining rights for iron-ore and its byproducts at Malekskraal. The three farms together cover 8 370 ha. “As a self-funded company from inception to date, our progress and project development has been dependent solely on the success of other non-mining-related projects that we run and have used to provide capital. “This is extremely difficult and challenging, especially because mining requires such high volumes of cash injection, not to mention the costs incurred to outsource expert opinion through consultants, geologists and surveyors,” Malebe explained. Lethabo set out in 2007 when its first prospecting rights application was submitted to the Department of Minerals Resources and Energy (DMRE), finally executing its mining rights this year, “so that's after 16 years of being on the receiving end of bureaucracy, litigation, no-access to funding and limited access to markets. “As an emerging mining company, being black-owned and being women-led does not make us immune to the challenges that are common to the industry – access to markets, capital, human capital, and the DMRE's legitimate intervention at a regional level. We are too young a company to even comment on the access's real issues,” Malebe said. Malekskraal is the only site where site establishment has been done, the construction of a weighbridge has been competed and opencast mining operations has begun. A Grade 12 learner has been found dead with stab wounds during a school camp at the Ben Hlongwane high school, outside Mokopane in Limpopo. Philemon Nkomo's body was found in the early hours of yesterday morning (Sunday). He had been camping with other learners at the school to prepare for exams. In another incident, a Grade 12 who reportedly left a study camp without permission at Leagathoko Secondary School outside Burgersfort, drowned in a river. The first in-person listing of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange since Covid heard the African kudu horn serenade an opening bid of R6.90 a share for platinum group metals (PGMs) company Southern Palladium, which on Wednesday took its place on the JSE's main board as a secondary listing under the SDL code. It did so shortly after the JSE recounted its rousing journey from a mining tent 135 years ago to a trading pace that now averages 300 orders a second and 20 million orders a day. Community members, labour union mineworkers and investors closed ranks below the big screen after JSE CEO Dr Leila Fourie had expressed great excitement at being able to list Southern Palladium, which is chaired by seasoned PGM campaigner Terence Goodlace. Southern Palladium MD Johan Odendaal highlighted the newly listed company's tight arm-locking with the admirably persevering Bengwenya community, of the Steelpoort and Burgersfort area, which hosts one of the largest remaining shallow platinum deposits on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Bengwenyama-ya- Maswazi is a major partner with a 30% direct interest and further indirect ownership through a 12.3% shareholding in Southern Palladium. The timing of the tide-turning listing coincides with a world needing PGMs cleans up its act still further by transitioning to clean and green energy. Alicia Greenwood, the CEO of JSE Clear – the entity within the JSE group that is responsible for the risk management, clearing and settlement of all transactions in the equity, currency, interest rate and commodities derivatives markets – emphasised the JSE's deep liquidity – “which means that which means that a lot of people are interested in trading the companies on our exchange”. JSE trading operations manager Martin Koch spoke of exchange's trading engine literally functioning as fast as the speed of light and how the R6.90 a share orders for Southern Palladium were being sent across for the rest of the world at a maximum speed of 300 milliseconds. “We hope that listing on our main board is the beginning of another prosperous chapter in your company's history and that it serves as a springboard to your next phase. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial journey,” stated Fourie. “At the JSE, we remain very committed to creating an effective environment for companies such as Southern Palladium to raise capital and to grow,” Greenwood said at the event covered by Mining Weekly. While Koch conceded that the JSE was more technology orientated than it was in the tent back in the day, he remains adamant that its main function of facilitating the buying and selling of shares in the best possible manner continues to be firmly intact. “These are the celebrations that really get to the crux of what we do at the JSE,” said Greenwood, who added that the JSE tam had returned from last month's Investing in African Mining Indaba “so pumped up and excited by the level of debate and the plotting, planning and activities that the mining community has for its sector” – a sector that is responsible for the JSE coming into existence.. A 28 year old man accused in the rape and murder of a six year old girl has appeared in the Praktiseer magistrate's court outside Burgersfort in Limpopo. The accused, Levy Nangoma had his case postponed to February first next year. He allegedly lured the girl into his house, raped and strangled her to death. A group of protesting mining community, mostly women at Ga Mampa village near the old Sefateng Chrome Mine outside Burgersfort in Limpopo, have spent another night camping outside the mine. They are trying to stop trucks laden with chrome from leaving the mine. They're accusing the mine of failing to plough back to the community as per the social labour plan since 2014.  They accuse the mine for failing to compensate them for loss of land and relocating the cemetery. The council of the Fetakgomo-Tubatse local municipality has taken a resolution to purchase a privately owned civic centre building at a cost of 135 million rand. The property in Burgersfort is owned by Tubatse Properties. The municipality will pay 50 million rand deposit and a monthly instalment of nearly three-million rand for a period of three years. Meanwhile political parties and community structures are concerned about the high price of the building as they believe that the sales price has been inflated. Dis vernoem na Andries Potgieter en natuurlik Georgius Ohrig, twee historiese figure (uit die Voortrekkerdae) wie se verhouding tot dusver maar min aandag gekry het.Sekerlik herken jy, veral van jou skoolgeskiedenishandboek (al was dit die vervelige UGO- kurrikulum) of na 'n besoek by die Voortrekkermonument, wie Andries Potgieter was. Voortrekkerleier wat hare op sy tande moes hê met sy trekgemeenskap, hulle deur rivier, drif en veldslag gelei het om later verewig te word met die POT van Potchefstroom. Wie was Ohrig dan?Suid-Afrika is strategies vir enige besigheid in die wêreld. Die VOC het dit verstaan, dalk selfs die Guptas, maar in die vroeë 1800’s het ʼn Nederlandse handelaar, Georgius Gerardus Ohrig, ook besef dat dit wys sou wees om met die Voortrekkers in die binneland van Suid-Afrika handel te dryf. The families who have lost their relatives during petrol bomb disaster at Driekop near Burgersfort are living in anguish - as the remains of the deceased haven't been released. The families remain in mourning but don't know when will the burials be conducted. The deceased were burnt inside a bus which was petrol bombed. Five of the victims are locals and the other is a Lesotho national.

Anglo American has described the petrol bomb attack on a bus carrying mineworkers at Driekop outside Burgersfort in Limpopo as a senseless act. Six mineworkers were killed and 28 others injured. Mining companies, Anglo American Platinum and African Rainbow Minerals who have joint ownership of the mine. They have condemned the incident.
