This week's episode of In The Circle is unlike any other because, for the first time, I'm sharing my personal story of recovery. It's a journey filled with struggle, revelation, and transformation—one that has shaped every part of who I am today. Recovery is never a straight line, and looking back, I see how each moment, each fall, and each breakthrough led me here.My path began long before I took my first drink or drug. Addiction, I believe, is rooted in childhood, in the ways we learn to cope, seek approval, or escape discomfort. And when addiction took hold, it pulled me into a cycle that felt impossible to break.I hit rock bottom not once, but three times—two of them while in recovery. Sobriety wasn't a simple fix; it was the beginning of an even deeper struggle. The 12 steps became both a guide and a mirror, forcing me to confront parts of myself I wanted to avoid. But it was in these moments—facing my pain head-on—that true healing began. And then, I found something that changed everything. Yoga and the wisdom of my teacher, Guru Prem, opened a door to a new way of being. Recovery became more than just staying sober; it became a path to real freedom. Today, I share this journey in the hopes that it sparks something in you—because we all have our own paths to walk, and healing is always possible. In this week's episode of In The Circle, I'm joined by Miriam who poses a deeply relevant inquiry: How Can I Stay Grounded When The World Feels So Uncertain? How do I navigate interactions with others amidst heightened emotions and uncertainty in the world? In a time when truth feels elusive and perspectives shift depending on the source, the power of discernment has never been more crucial. In times of upheaval, we must hold space for both grief and gratitude, recognizing that being present with what is allows us to respond rather than react. As we face societal shifts, including political change, it's essential to remain anchored in the present. Beyond affiliations and opinions, our true alignment is with the here and now—a practice that calls for awareness, balance, and intentional action. How do we hold space for others while protecting our own peace? How do we discern what to take in and what to let go? Let's explore these questions together and uncover the practices that help us navigate uncertain times with clarity and compassion.Tommy Discusses:Staying grounded amid uncertaintyMaintaining a balance when interacting with the outside worldThe practice of yoga and meditationResponding vs reactingWould you like to be a guest on the In The Circle Podcast? In this week's episode of In The Circle, we're joined by John, who poses one of humanity's most timeless questions: What is happiness? In recovery, we often hear about being “happy, joyous, and free,” the ultimate state achieved through the transformative work of recovery. But what does that truly mean?John's question invites us to explore the essence of happiness and its distinction from contentment. This conversation sets the stage for an important teaching known as the Seven Steps to Happiness. This powerful framework begins and ends in unexpected places, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of joy and fulfillment. This teaching illuminates a pathway to happiness and a profound state of contentment, reminding us that these states are attainable through conscious choice. In this week's episode of In The Circle, I'm thrilled to dive into an incredibly meaningful topic that impacts each of us — our relationship with food. Alyssa joins us with an inquiry about something fundamental to the human experience - How Can I Move Beyond Addictive Patterns with Food? Food has a powerful impact on how we feel, think, and interact in the world. It affects our energy, our mood, and even the way we show up in relationships. For those of us on the recovery path, it can be difficult to fully surrender to the principle that every compulsive bite blocks our connection to spirit. It's such a powerful question because, in one way or another, it touches us all.Together, we're going to examine what it means to truly honor our bodies and spirits through our relationship with food — an exploration I believe is at the heart of recovery and personal growth.Tommy Discusses:Strategies to change your relationship with foodThe 12-hour food windowWhy moving our bodies is so important How emotions affect our eating habits and patternsWould you like to be a guest on the In The Circle Podcast? On this week's episode of In The Circle, we welcome Stuart, who is celebrating one year of sobriety from long-term cannabis use. Stuart's success stands as a beacon of hope for those struggling to let go of cannabis, showing that recovery and thriving are possible. In this episode, he asks a question many of us can relate to: how can I break free from negative thinking patterns? How can we shift from negative thinking to a more realistic and positive outlook? The recovery journey can sometimes feel overwhelming, and it is not uncommon to occasionally feel stuck in old thinking and behavior patterns. By cultivating self-awareness and challenging those limiting beliefs, we can gradually move from a mindset of negativity to one that embraces possibility. It takes effort and intention, but every step forward opens the door to new perspectives and greater mental clarity. On this week's episode of In The Circle, we're diving into another powerful inquiry from someone who traveled with me to one of our Recovery 2.0 retreats in England. Today's guest, Perry, asks: How can I push through my resistance to change? During our England retreat, we discussed something I call resistance training. When I mention resistance training, I'm talking about engaging in activities that naturally bring up our own resistance. I'm referring to – the voice that says, "I'll do it tomorrow." The practice of resistance training is about purposefully doing those things that challenge us, allowing us to break through that resistance and emerge stronger. In Recovery 2.0, we emphasize this training to help us become our best selves. Perry also asks me about the practices I personally use to overcome my resistance and show up fully in life. Through this episode, we'll explore the mind, body, and spirit, and discuss ways we can all set up the conditions to blow through our resistance to the things we know are good for us. This, I believe, is key to finding daily fulfillment and moving forward on what I call the path of discovery. On this week's episode of In The Circle, we are truly blessed to have Linda, an elder, joining us. When I say "elder," I'm referring not just to age, but to the wisdom and humility gained over time. Linda brings us such a powerful inquiry when she asks: What does conscious recovery look like as we grow older? This deeply humbles me. It's a profound inquiry from someone with so much life experience in recovery, reminding us all that the journey continues no matter where we are.As we age and approach the last chapter of our lives, there can be uncertainty and frustration about how we can maximize the time we have left.In this episode, we explore what it means to be an elder, to age with dignity and power, and to find fulfillment every single day. This conversation is vital for anyone who wants to grow old consciously and live with purpose.Tommy Discusses:The power of living in the energy of gratitudeDealing with regret in longer-term recoveryFinding grace at every ageWhat does it mean to age with dignity and consciousness?Would you like to be a guest on the In The Circle Podcast? On this week's episode of In The Circle, we're joined by Mariana, who brings us an impactful inquiry: How Can I Maintain Healthy Boundaries While Being of Service in Recovery? We often read in spiritual scriptures that we are meant to give without expectation. Yet, as humans in relationships, we recognize that boundaries are essential, especially in recovery. Spiritual and religious teachings often compare service to an express train for personal and spiritual growth. While giving and serving are fundamental aspects of recovery, it's important to understand that setting healthy boundaries not only prevents burnout but also allows us to continue giving sustainably.I often say that ‘service is where the action is', but what does it truly mean to be of service? How can we differentiate between serving authentically and serving in a codependent way? In this episode, we'll dive deep into what it means to be of service and explore how to help others without giving too much of yourself away. Tommy Discusses:Being of service in the present momentGiving from a place of wholeness and authenticity without losing yourselfCreating healthy boundaries What it truly means to be of serviceHelping others while letting go of the outcome Would you like to be a guest on the In The Circle Podcast? On this week's episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Rosie, who brings a relevant and powerful inquiry for our consideration: How can I quickly regulate my emotions and ground myself, so I don't get lost in the story my mind creates? This is a deeply relevant inquiry—who hasn't found themselves trapped by the narratives they carry in their mind? It's all too common to become our own biggest triggers, getting swept away by our thoughts and emotions.Recovery, however, is more than abstinence. It's about moving beyond the limiting stories that keep us stuck and discovering new ways of thinking that empower us. It's the process of letting go of old, unhelpful stories and embracing ones that enhance our connection to truth, power, love, and life itself.By rewriting our stories, we can open the door to deeper healing and a more authentic, fulfilling existence.Tommy Discusses:How to disrupt negative emotionsHow to reframe the narratives that keep you stuckYour thoughts hold no power over youHow the mind and breath are connectedYou are not your thoughts and emotionsWould you like to be a guest on the In The Circle Podcast? On this week's episode of In The Circle, we're joined by Elaine, who draws our attention to one of the most challenging scenarios in all of addiction: What steps can parents take to support their grown child in addiction recovery? How do I remain silent when my child continues to make bad choices? I don't want to enable them. I don't know how to support them. What can I do? This inquiry will bring up important questions about how to position oneself to be of maximum use to a person who is struggling with active addiction. This is one of those inquiries that will resound across the recovery community globally. On this week's episode of In The Circle, we have Kathy bringing a very unique yet relevant inquiry that requires a bit of unpacking. Kathy inquires: what is the difference between being an introvert and isolating? Kathy wrote to us and said, “I usually hear that human beings are hardwired for connection and that we are social creatures. I do not believe it to be true for every human being - it isn't true for me.” As we go down the path of this inquiry, we'll learn that Kathy has been introverted most of her life and that her family was not necessarily comfortable with that. We explore what it means to find solitude, the importance of cultivating a relationship with oneself, and how that relationship compares in importance and in necessity with the relationships with those around us.This inquiry brings up a lot of questions about the difference between being an introvert and self-isolation. The unfortunate reality is that sexual and physical abuse are very present in our world. Donna's inquiry gives us an opportunity to explore healing from these deep, formative wounds.I believe that healing is always possible. On this week's episode of In The Circle, Galen brings to light the addictive nature of procrastination when he inquires: How Can I Overcome The Hidden Addiction Of Procrastination? When we actively avoid things we need to do and even things we may want to do, it erodes our confidence and compels us to take some action to relieve ourselves of the negative emotions that ensue. I look at procrastination as one of the four aggravations. Negative thinking, self-doubt, procrastination, and resentment. It is a pattern of belief and behavior that truly gets in the way of a person's happiness. This brings the concept of addiction to everyone's doorstep. On this week's episode of In The Circle, Nicole is here with us bringing an inquiry about what I call the real gateway drug. Of course, I'm speaking about sugar. Nicole asks: Am I addicted to sugar? Should I abstain completely or is there a place of moderation? Now, I believe that addressing one's relationship with food and sugar in particular is a central part of recovery for everyone. In Nicole's case, she let go of alcohol several years ago and wants to take her recovery journey to the next level by addressing her relationship with food. I've seen countless people stuck in the frequency of addiction because they stay in old addictive patterns when it comes to food. This is one of the most important inquiries when it comes to true recovery as we need to be present in our minds and bodies to address the underlying reasons for our food cravings.
