She wants people to know about Z Puppets Rosenschnoz's upcoming performances of “Tales of ᏓᎦᏏ Dagsi Turtle & ᏥᏍᏚ Jisdu Wabbit,” a time-traveling, Cherokee-language-learning puppetry adventure for ages 5 and up. Shows are Saturday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis. There are also upcoming performances at two libraries: April 26 at 10:30 a.m. at East Side Freedom Library in St. Paul and April 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Hosmer Library in Minneapolis. The show runs 45 minutes.Oogie Push described the show: It's a musical adventure that goes into Cherokee futurism, and it's just a really fun sort of sci-fi adventure. Dagsi Turtle and Jisdu Wabbit are racing through time and space to save Grandmother Turtle. So they hop aboard their Turtle Ship and travel across space and time. I find it amazing that they find a way to get to historical, important events in Cherokee history. So you visit Sequoyah and Ayoka when they are coming up with the Cherokee syllabary, for example.Chris Griffith, who is Cherokee and part of Z puppets Rosenshnoz, was an adult language learner of the Cherokee language, and so the language came to him in the form of song. And so he thought, How can I incorporate this into a puppet theater? And so he just started envisioning futurism, sci-fi, fantasy and just sort of like this hero's journey.— Oogie PushLaughter, identity and healing at the OrdwayTerri Thao of St. Paul loves the Funny Asian Women Kollective (FAWK), and she booked her tickets early to see The FAWK Hmong (+ Friends) Super Show this Saturday at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul. You know, Asian American women can be funny! My understanding about comedy is a lot of people talk about real life, right? They're making observations about things happening. And I think so many times in communities, you know, refugee communities, there's been a lot of strife but at the same time, we've used humor to cope with so much. I just think they're able to just offer a lens into that experience with some humor. Preston's looking forward to the launch of Mark Gustafson's new book “Sowing Seeds: The Minnesota Literary Renaissance & Robert Bly, 1958-1980.” The book explores how Minnesota became the literary hub it is today. Mark Gustafson will discuss his new book with poets Jim Lenfestey and Nor Hall at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis this Saturday, April 19 at 6 p.m. People are encouraged to pre-register here. Preston says people who arrive early can see a slide show of The Loft through the years. Preston shared why this history matters to him: I believe Robert Bly is one of the most consequential poets of the 20th century. And I'm not just saying that as a Minnesotan from western Minnesota who's very proud of our literary tradition, but I'm saying this as someone who has had the immense fortune of being able to grow up in a state that takes its arts and culture seriously. How do you get to a point in a state's culture to where that is seen as a civic good? It begins with poets. It begins with our creatives. And “Sowing Seeds'” is about the influence of one individual, by no means the only, famous writer from Minnesota, but from someone who is very intentional of wanting to go out and set a new course for American poetry.— Joshua Preston

Chris has a wealth of experience in the mining industry and previously served as the CEO of Gold Fields and also two major mining business, Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore. Now with Vedanta, he tells us more about the company and the demerger of its business into 6 separately listed companies. He also discusses the critical minerals space in general and the geo-politics impacting on the critical minerals industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vedanta Resources is planning to demerge into six separately listed companies, each focusing on specific commodities, which is expected to unlock substantial value. The base metals division of Vedanta, has significant growth plans, aiming to increase zinc and copper production to over a million tons each by 2030. Geopolitics is impacting the critical minerals industry, with countries like the US, Canada, and China focusing on securing critical mineral assets and investing in African mining projects. Vedanta's mines and processing plants are strategically located in favourable mining jurisdictions like South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, India, and the Middle East to capitalise on growth opportunities. Vedanta has made significant progress in ESG initiatives, ranking among the top three globally in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, showcasing their commitment to sustainability and responsible mining practices. BEST MOMENTS "I think the potential for Africa growth with the demand for critical minerals, and as we see the growth of the world needing growth in mining, you'll continue to see expansion of mining in Africa." "We've already seen 100% growth in the share price in this past year. I think as the demerger happens, which I think is one of the key things to watch for, I think that's all lined up to happen."  "The real jewel in the crown is the fact that KCM, the Konkola copper mines in Zambia, which has been sort of under government control for the past five years, we announced at the end of last year that we had reached agreement with government and now just needed to go through the regulatory approval process." In what is a transformational high point, Benford Mokoatle will run Gold Fields South Africa from January 1 when Martin Preece steps up as interim CEO following the sudden stepdown of Chris Griffith over the Yamana Gold transaction not succeeding. The Gold Fields South Africa executive VP position goes to Mokoatle for now as Preece – a 37-year industry veteran and a board member of the Minerals Council South Africa – leads the company until a full-time CEO is appointed. As VP South Deep, a de facto GM position, Mokoatle worked alongside Preece to send the once troubled South Deep gold mine into a new high production orbit. Mokoatle's assumption of the EVP Gold Fields South Africa mantle makes for the smoothest of baton changes – a smoothness that would be replicated should Preece – who has shot the lights out in everything he has tackled for Gold Fields so far – be appointed to the top job full time. Meanwhile, internal and external candidates will be considered as global executive search firms conduct a CEO search. Preece, who joined Gold Fields as an executive committee member six years ago, has full board support in his interim CEO role. He will work alongside CFO Paul Schmidt, a seasoned Gold Fields campaigner since 2008. In response to Mining Weekly during a media conference call, Preece expressed ultra-confidence in the team that will be running South Deep, Gold Fields' only remaining South Africa asset: “There's been a great team at South Deep for a number of years now,” he said. Griffith's step down will be effective from December 31. In thanking Griffith for the dedication he showed especially during the Yamana transaction, Gold Fields chairperson Yunus Suleman said: “We were all disappointed that the Yamana deal did not go through, as we felt it was a compelling deal which would have created a strong company and created value for all our shareholders.” In turn, Griffith thanked the board for the opportunity to lead Gold Fields. “The board and I agree that the company's strategy, including growing the value and quality of the portfolio, continues to be the right one, but we also felt that the Yamana setback should not be allowed to impede the company's strategy. So, as CEO, I felt that I should take responsibility and allow the company to move forward under new leadership, unencumbered by the Yamana transaction.” Said Preece: “Our focus remains on implementing our strategy and continuing to deliver operational excellence and sustainable growth. Disciplined capital allocation will remain a key focus for all our strategic decision-making as Gold Fields continues to implement its strategy.” Gold Fields' balance sheet remains healthy, providing the Johannesburg- and New York-listed gold mining company with significant flexibility to pursue its strategic objectives. The turnaround of South Deep has been sustained, with the mine performing well and on track to ramp up to around 380 000 oz over the next two to three years. Gold Fields is also focused on delivering the first gold at Salares Norte in Chile by the end of the second quarter of next year and then building up to full production in 2024.

South Africa-based Gold Fields will continue to execute on its strategy of improving the quality and value of its assets and, in time, will pursue other strategic opportunities, CEO Chris Griffith said on Wednesday. The JSE- and NYSE-listed company has walked away from its deal to buy Canadian miner Yamana Gold, after refusing to be dragged into a bidding war with rivals Agnico Eagle Mines and Pan American Silver, which offered $4.8-billion in cash and shares for Yamana. “We were not willing to compromise our prudent approach to capital allocation by getting into a bidding war – no matter how compelling the assets,” Griffith said. Speaking on a media call following the failed bid, he said Gold Fields was disappointed with the outcome, as the group believed that it had put forward a compelling deal, which would have led to a stronger company for both sets of shareholders. Although the acquisition of Yamana would have been a good way to execute on the group's growth strategy, Griffith stressed that it was “not the only and won't be the only” option available to the company. “We have a number of assets that are of interest to us as part of our due diligence process. We will now, in the same discipline process, consider those other options in time to come as part of our broader strategy,” he told journalists, but said that it was too early to comment on what exactly the next opportunity for Gold Fields may be. “The board has given us a clear direction to execute our strategy of improving the quality and value of our portfolio of assets and that is what we intend to do. The Gold Fields of today was built on disciplined M&A [mergers and acquisitions] and disciplined operations. We intend to maintain that discipline.” Griffith said he was confident that the board "100% had his back", when questioned about whether he felt his job was safe following the failed deal. The all-stock transaction, announced in May, has attracted criticism from some shareholders and resulted in Gold Fields' share price falling sharply. "We certainly feel no shame in saying that we evaluated a number of opportunities and that we decided to chase down what we thought was the best opportunity. The board and the management team collectively looked at all the options that were available to us and believe this was the best opportunity on the table. We are not apologetic about chasing down what we think is the best opportunity." The CEO also pushed back against a suggestion that the several months-long bidding process was a waste of time. "It certainly was not a waste of time, both in terms of strategy and actually also the landing of a $300-million breaking fee," Griffith said. Gold Fields will be receiving the break fee, which amounts to about R5.3-billion, in the coming days.. The group has not decided yet what it plans do with the cash, other than saying that it will form part of the normal capital allocation process. This could include paying cash back to shareholders, investing in future opportunities, or reducing debt. “All of those are great ways to return value to shareholders,” Griffith said. Commenting on the dividend policy that Gold Fields announced in July to sweeten its offer for Yamana, he said that the new policy of paying shareholders a dividend of 30% to 45% of normalised earning remained unchanged. However, the promise of a 45% payout for the 2023 dividend would fall away.

NYSE- and JSE-listed Gold Fields has generated an attributable profit of $510-million for the six months ended June 30, and declared an interim dividend of R3, or $0.18, apiece. This compares with an attributable profit of $387-million and a dividend of R2.10, or about $0.12 apiece, for the six months ended June 30, 2021. While attributable profit grew by 24% year-on-year, the interim dividend increased by 43% year-on-year. CEO Chris Griffith says that, although the period saw an operating environment dominated by elevated mining cost inflation, as a result of rising commodity and fuel prices, Gold Fields contained the rise in its all-in costs (AIC) to only 6% year-on-year, to $1 352/oz. The company operates nine mines across Australia, Peru, South Africa, Ghana and Chile, reporting attributable production of 1.2-million ounces of gold for the six months under review, compared with the 1.1-million ounces produced in the six months ended June 30, 2021, marking a 9% year-on-year increase. The 3% higher gold price this year helped the company to increase its normalised earnings by 16% to $498-million, or $0.56 apiece, compared with the prior interim period's normalised earnings of $431-million, or $0.49 apiece. The group also grew its adjusted free cash flow by 63% year-on-year to $293-million. Gold Fields managed to reduce its net debt by $120-million in the reporting period, with the net debt balance at the end of June standing at $851-million. The company leaves its cost guidance for the year unchanged at between $1 370/oz and $1 410/oz, excluding the Asanko operation, as higher-than-expected mining inflation is being offset by weaker exchange rates and higher-than-expected copper by-product credit. Gold Fields forecasts mining inflation reaching 10.9% by the end of the year. Attributable gold production guidance for the full-year remains at between 2.25-million and 2.29-million ounces, excluding the Asanko operation, which, if included, may see attributable gold production range between 2.31-million and 2.36-million ounces. Meanwhile, Gold Fields says its Salares Norte project, in Chile, is 77% complete, with construction progressing well. The company highlights that it has managed to keep the project on track through the challenges of the past two years, including Covid-19 and severe weather events; however, more severe weather events in recent months have resulted in marginal delays in the project timeline. Gold Fields estimates a three-month delay in the start of production, and, consequently, there may be a knock-on impact in the ramp-up to full production. The company hopes to start operating the mine in March next year, which should result in 200 000 oz of gold being produced in 2023. Should the mine only start operating at the end of April, however, it will produce closer to 165 000 oz for the year. The company spent $172-million on developing the project in the six months under review. The project capital expenditure (capex) is expected to be about 5% higher than the original guidance of $86-million, given the potential delay in production. Overall group capex increased by 20%, from $456-million in the prior half-year to $545-million in the reporting half-year. In South Africa, Gold Fields reported an increase of 28% in attributable gold production from the South Deep operation to 158 000 oz. Gold production at the Australian operations increased by 10% year-on-year to 527 400 oz, owing to higher grades of ore mined and processed at the Agnew, Granny Smith and Gruyere operations. Cerro Corona, in Peru, posted 31% higher interim production of 129 300 oz, mainly owing to higher grades of ore processed and higher recovery rates achieved. Attributable gold production from the West African operations, including Damang, Asanko and Tarkwa, came in 4% lower at 401 000 oz in the period under review, mainly owing to planned lower production from Damang and Asanko, the latter of which Gold Fields has a 45% stake in. Gold Fields lifts first-quarter output despite macroeconomic challenges

Despite facing various global challenges, JSE-listed gold miner Gold Fields achieved a 7% year-on-year increase in attributable equivalent gold production for the quarter ended March 31. While the 580 000 oz of gold produced in the quarter was 8% lower quarter-on-quarter, Gold Fields said it remained on track to achieve its full-year production guidance. The South Deep mine, in South Africa, produced 78 000 oz of gold in the first quarter – a 31% year-on-year increase. Production at Gold Fields' Ghana mines, however, decreased by 5% year-on-year to 210 000 oz. The Australian operations delivered a 10% year-on-year increase in output, at 258 000 oz, while the Cerro Corona mine, in Peru, produced 56 000 oz – a 21% year-on-year increase. CEO Chris Griffith said on May 5 that the first quarter had been a challenging start to the year from a macro perspective. “As we finally seemed to have overcome the worst of Covid‐19, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has had a material impact. [In addition to] the devastation caused by . . . war, the world is being plagued with heightened inflation, driven by high oil and gas prices and, more broadly, higher commodity prices. "While we expected the mining sector to be challenged by high inflation at the start of the year, the impact has been worse than initially expected,” he said. Griffith noted that high commodity prices had driven inflation in energy costs, logistics and consumables. However, the higher inflationary pressures were offset to some extent by higher‐than‐expected copper by‐product credit, he added. Consequently, Gold Fields would leave its full-year cost guidance unchanged. For 2022, attributable gold equivalent production, excluding the Asanko mine, in Ghana, is expected to be between 2.25-million and 2.29-million ounces, compared with the 2.25-million ounces produced in 2021. Asanko is an equity accounted joint venture between precious metals producer Galiano Gold and Gold Fields. Including Asanko, however, attributable gold equivalent production is expected to be between 2.29-million and 2.34-million ounces. All-in-sustaining costs for the full-year are expected to be between $1 140/oz and $1 180/oz, with all-in costs (AIC) expected to be between $1 370/oz and $1 410/oz. If the large project capital expenditure taking place at the Salares Norte project, in Chile, is excluded, AIC are expected to be between $1 230/oz and $1 270/oz. RENEWABLE ENERGY In terms of Gold Fields renewable energy efforts, Griffith noted that the South Deep mine's 50 MW solar plant, in Gauteng, was on track for commissioning in the third quarter of the year, with installation of the 101 000 solar panels proceeding. Nearly 240 people have been employed in the construction phase of the project, with black economic empowerment contractors carrying out most of the work. After President Cyril Ramaphosa announced last year that the licensing exemption for distributed generation would increase to 100 MW, South Deep applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for approval to increase its solar project output capacity to 60 MW. South Deep obtained approval from Nersa in March. Year-to-date expenditure on the plant amounted to R164-million, with the full-year expenditure expected to reach R554-million. Total expenditure to build and commission the plant is estimated at about R700-million. Griffith said the construction of the plant was currently 9% behind plan, owing to global supply constraints and the need to secure shipping slots. However, he noted that the team remained confident that the plant would still come online in August to supply electricity as planned. Meanwhile, at the Gruyere mine in Australia, the construction of a 12 MW solar plant and a 4.4 MW battery storage facility has been completed with the system now being performance tested and ramping up for commissioning, scheduled for June. Gruyere is a 50:50 joint venture between gold production companies Gold Road and Gruyere...

Neil McKay was 15 when he heard two men speaking in Dakota for the first time. His family was attending a relative's wake, the men were standing at the door as McKay walked by. “They were speaking this very, very beautiful and enchanting language.” McKay, a tribal member from the Spirit Lake community in North Dakota, instructs students in the Dakota language at the University of Minnesota. He remembers hearing his language the same year his interest in music suddenly sparked. He was at a friend's home watching a video of Robert Smith from the Cure playing guitar. It looked like the guitar his father owned. “My dad said my grandma could hear a song once, pick up a guitar and fingerpick it. And that's something that I wish I could do,” McKay said. McKay became classically trained in guitar. He learned to meld his interest in the Dakota language and music over time. And he said his work as a musician has helped him to understand how he learns. “The best way that I learned language is to visit in, listen,” McKay said. ”I use my ears a lot,” McKay said. For decades, Indigenous language speakers have been part of a larger movement for cultural revitalization for tribal communities in Minnesota and across the U.S. As the movement grows so does the need to engage language learners in new ways. 'Grandmother gets stronger' Chris Griffith and Shari Aronson are co-founders of Z Puppets Rosenschnoz, a puppet theater in Minneapolis. For the past four years, they have been performing “Say It! Sing It! Play It! In Cherokee.” Click to watch “We describe it as a musical adventure into the Cherokee language with a turtle and a rabbit, and Grandmother Turtle has slipped and turned upside down,” said Aronson, “and every time they say, or share, or sing a Cherokee sound or word, Grandmother gets stronger.” Griffith said the same metaphor might apply to all endangered languages, “I broaden it out so that the idea of there's many different grandmothers out there, and there's many different endangered languages out there. And so when you see a turtle that's on its back, it needs some help to get it back on its feet.” Gallery Nicole Neri for MPR News Creative directors and founders of Z Puppets, Chris Griffith and Shari Aronson teach Cherokee words in their play. Though he has performed in puppet shows for more than two decades, Griffith hadn't thought of himself as a musician until he picked up his ukulele and began making music for the play. “Songs started falling out of me, almost literally falling out,” he said. “And I could put the concepts of the Cherokee language that I was learning into a song.” “People will come up to us and say, thank you in Cherokee, wado, and people will sing the songs afterward. So it has that stickiness which is really important for revitalization,” Aronson added. Teaching through illustration Another artist and educator says his elders inspired his work. That moment of everyone coming together, master speakers, second language learners, artists. And it's trying to create this beautiful thing, this very necessary thing, in this world of language revitalization,” Ballinger said. Years ago, Ballinger was inspired by Steve Premo, a fellow artist, when he was taking his first Ojibwe language class in high school. “And Steve had these dynamic ink drawings that coincided with Ojibwe phrases. It had a very much a comic book dynamic, like approach to the line weights, the confidence and just throwing down those lines,” he said. Ballinger aims to inspire that same interest in young learners who read his books. “I saw through the immersion movement, folks wanted to get rid of all English. So how do you convey a meaning …? You do it through imagery, you do it through form.” Related reporting Discussion Teaching kids Indigenous language and culture In Focus Sustainability in Indian Country Teaching Ojibwe Mille Lacs launches Rosetta Stone program What should we report on next? St. Paul poet and performance artist Hawona Sullivan Janzen has loved Ananya Dance Theatre ever since she watched them through a glass window this summer. The dancers performed inside their University Avenue studio but the audience was seated on the sidewalk outside while traffic and light rail trains rushed nearby. She remains moved by the experience. Sullivan Janzen is planning to see Ananya Dance Theatre's new show “Dastak: I Wish You Me” indoors this weekend. The dance performance is a collaboration with playwright Sharon Bridgforth and cellist Spirit McIntyre. Ananya is a contemporary dance theater company focused on global social justice. “Dastak” contemplates migration and loss through “four elemental journeys,” according to the dance company's website. The Farsi term for knockings, dastak refers to the idea that global social injustice prompts a knocking at your door. Ananya Dance Theatre's show “Dastak: I Wish You Me” is Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9 p.m. at The O'Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University in St. Paul. The theater requires masks as well as proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the performance. Teaching artist Maria Asp loves Z Puppets Rosenschnoz's web series, “Say it, Sing it, Play it!”  The three-part series is a hybrid of live-action, puppetry, animation and song, and is in Cherokee. Designed for ages 3 and up, the show follows best friends Turtle and Wabbit as they travel in their spaceship, unlocking clues to help save Grandma Turtle. Asp called it a delightful series whose pacing and repetition make it easy for all ages to learn some words in Cherokee. It was created by Chris Griffith, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation, as a way to answer a 2019 state of emergency call to keep the Cherokee language from being lost. The show stars Griffith and Shari Aronson and is directed by Anishinabe artist Julie Boada. The digital show streams through the Ordway Theater's website for the month of November.  Tribal members of any nation, as well as Native American schools or organizations, may sign up to see the show for free. This new body ventures into textiles, using canvas and heavy plastic combined with embroidery and rivets to create a tension in each piece that invites viewers to look closer. Schleisman loves the vibrant colors of the pieces. “It's like you're having this private conversation that Lisa has created with these forms,” said Schleisman. “Dear Diary” runs through Nov. 18, both in-person and online, with a closing reception on the final evening.

As Broker/Owner of MS Lending, Michelle Dugan has become a champion for veterans and an advocate for building community. As an active member of VettedVA, a veteran education group, Michelle protects military veterans from predatory business practices and helps them get the home of their dreams. She originates in the same town where she grew up and went to school. That intrinsic knowledge helps set her apart from retail banks and has positioned her as a trusted mortgage advisor. Within the broker channel, she is an active member of multiple wholesale mortgage groups where she shares her knowledge and expertise to help elevate the broker channel.  Michelle joined the real estate world in 2001 when she worked as a paralegal for a real estate attorney. At the time, she wanted to go to law school and practice real estate law herself. While working as a paralegal, she got her Broker's license so she could originate on the side. Not long after getting her license, she had her first child and deferred her law school plans. She joined the mortgage industry full-time in 2007 and never looked back. After years of working for Brokers, and a short stint on the retail side, she opened her own brokerage in 2019.  Starting out in the industry, Michelle only did a few VA loans a year. It wasn't until she went to a VA loan education session in person that she witnessed the passion that really motivated her to serve those who had served. Not long after, she met Chris Griffith before he started VettedVA. She immediately saw his passion and wanted to join his cause. She told him “Whatever you're doing, I want to be part of it because I know something good is going to come from it.” For Michelle, building community is incredibly important. She originates and runs her brokerage in the same town she grew up in. That community knowledge proved to be a major advantage for Michelle since she had built-in clients with friends and family and knew the wants and needs of the community better than retail banks. Michelle has also found and built a community within the broker channel. As an active member of AIME's Brokers Are Better and Women's Mortgage Network Facebook Groups, she adopts a “givers gain” mentality where she can share her knowledge with others while also learning from them. “I wouldn't be as successful as I am in the broker channel without Brokers Are Better,” Michelle said.  Michelle's parting advice: Lean into your community. Whether it's your local community or one you build with others in the industry, you serve to gain so much if you're actively engaged. Within BAB and WMN, there are so many knowledgeable brokers who are there to share their knowledge and help you succeed. Those groups have been a game-changer for Michelle and she credits them with helping her avoid burnout. JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Doing the ordinary tasks extraordinarily well is the current short-term tactic of platinum group metals (PGMs) mining company Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) under new CEO Natascha Viljoen, who is intent on stretching the company’s existing assets to their full capacity. “We don’t deserve the right to grow unless we know that the assets we have are absolutely optimised,” Viljoen said during a Coronation Fund Managers webinar, covered by Mining Weekly. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) In the last four months, going back to basics had produced rich returns, despite Covid, Viljoen emphasised under questioning from Coronation’s Pallavi Ambekar about where she would be taking the company in the next five to ten years. The best starting response to the question, she said, would be to give credit to her predecessor Chris Griffith and his team for having already strategically simplified what was a very complex business, during very challenging times of low commodity prices. Viljoen credited Griffith with turning the business around by reducing in all-in sustaining costs significantly and, in spite of fundamental business restructuring, increasing production. As there was no longer a need for hard decision-making and tree pruning, the opportunity now was to make sure that the assets in hand were stretched to their full capacity, she emphasised. What was needed now was to maximise the gains already made, something that was not strategic but very tactical and exemplified by drilling holes for blasting in the right place and at the right depth. “People have that in their heads, but we haven’t institutionalised it and made it part of the DNA of the business. In the last four months, despite Covid, just by going back to basics, we’ve seen record productions month-on-month at our openpit Mogalakwena mine. “Going back to basics, first point, making it part of who we are and how we work, through our operating model, and then putting technology and digital as overlays in that to make sure that we don’t lose that capability again,” Viljoen said.

With no home to call their own with his parents when he was young, Scott's “fascination” with real estate, as his wife puts it, started. Scott retired after 26 years (2014) and started working towards doing real estate investing full time after he realized it's time to pursue another career that doesn't necessarily involve being away from his wife and kids. Tune in to this episode where Scott explains more on his journey throughout the years his career in real estate. He is also the first guest I've had on the show that talks about a lease option called Sandwich Lease Strategy and I've yet to try that! There are so many misconceptions among real estate agents about VA loans. Realtors, for the most part, lack the facts on how VA loans work, and far too often look down on buyers using VA loans because of these misconceptions. Our military veterans are being mistreated on the mortgage side, and then again when they start making offers to purchase homes. The purpose of this episode is twofold: 1) Educate Realtors about the ways that our veterans are being mistreated, overcharged, and discriminated against in the real estate and mortgage industry and 2) teach you how you can actually sell a bunch more homes each year by focusing more on serving our veterans. This week, Chris Griffith, prominent mortgage broker and founder of Vetted VA, joins us to shine some light on why real estate agents have it all wrong about VA loans, and how veterans are actually being screwed by supposed "veteran-friendly" lenders. Every real estate agent within the sound of my voice should hear this episode, and share it with every other agent they know. By educating yourself on the topic, you'll not only be able to help right some wrongs, but sell more homes by becoming a true veteran advocate.Episode Sponsor: Easy Agent ProClick Here to Get MY Website w/ 1 Month Free + Free CRM NEW! I mean, I'm normal enough I guess; I am a sinner saved by grace, I have an amazing wife of nearly 11 years, 3 beautiful daughters, a dog, and a cat. All far more than I deserve. I'm kind of an awkward guy; but in a semi-funny, helpful way (does that make sense?) I Grew up in a small town in north Texas the son of a Home Builder. We were pretty broke growing up, but we didn't know it and there was plenty of Love. Divorce rocked our family when I was 12, and I quickly learned the value of a dollar. Work was always my preferred state of being, unfortunately, and I still struggle to find a balance to this day. I'm self-employed with 3 employees, we Homeschool our 3 daughters, and we are part owners of several businesses. Busy. 8 years in the Marine Corps ended a little early with a retirement that took me 2 years to bounce back from mentally because I just wasn't ready. I landed on a foot, did a quick break-fall, and the family was up and functioning again within 24 months. It was hard. I learned a new trade to apply to an old Love, and now I am in my hometown, the owner of a fairly successful Mortgage Brokerage, and have amassed a sizable real estate investment portfolio with Single Family, and Multi-Family properties. The name of my company is Debt Does Deals, and I show the every day Joe how to achieve their biggest opportunities in Real Estate, in the most financially sound and risk adverse manners. - Not as Sexy as being a Marine I suppose, but I help people, so I'm cool with it.
