Hark! The stories behind our favorite Christmas carols

To kick off the fourth season of “Hark! The stories behind our favorite Christmas carols” we're embarking on an adventure to learn about an American-born carol that features some classic nativity characters—figures that, though very familiar to us, we know little about. It's a Christmas song that begins on a plodding, somber note and erupts into a thrilling epiphany. We're exploring “We Three Kings.” To help us understand who the magi were—at least from the perspective of Matthew's Gospel— host Maggi Van Dorn invites Eric Vanden Eykel, author of The Magi: Who They Are, How They've Been Remembered, and Why They Still Fascinate and Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Ferrum College. The magi's gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh have long been viewed as symbolic of Jesus' kingship, divinity and humanity, but how were these two herbs used in antiquity? Maggi learns about their earliest uses from Emiliana Patrick, a fourth year doctoral student in Classical Chinese Medicine at Daoist Traditions College in Asheville, North Carolina. To trace the star the magi followed, Maggi turns to the director of the Vatican's observatory, Guy Consolmagno, S.J., a Jesuit brother.  Finally, to better appreciate the musical genius of the carol's composition, she speaks with ContraForce, a folk metal band known for their eclectic range of musical styles at contra dances, who specially created an instrumental rendition of “We Three Kings,”specially for “Hark!,” that is woven throughout the episode. The music featured in this episode is courtesy of ContraForce, Michael Logozar, Cynthia Boener, Dante Bucci, the Lee siblings of the Seasons band, Jeff Black and Lotos Nile Music. I'm excited to have our first Chinese medicine practitioner, Toby Daly, on the show. That he chose to talk about dan shen—one of my favorite herbs to grow in a garden and perhaps one of the herbs that I have been growing the longest—just added to my delight! If you don't already know dan shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), I'm confident you'll love it, too, by the end of this episode. To give you a sneak peek, dan shen can help to:► Cool and calm irritability► Ease chronic pain► Support the heart and pericardium► and moreAll this while having the additional distinction of being the lead player in a whole herb formula that's just been approved in the U.S. to go to Stage Four clinical trials. (That's big, folks!) And, as if that wasn't enough, dan shen is absolutely gorgeous, with brilliant, large purple flowers that are beloved by pollinators of all sorts, including bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.Any which way you look at it, there's an abundance to enjoy and appreciate about dan shen! By the end of this episode, you'll know:► Why Chinese medicine (and, of course, clinical herbalism) always starts with the patient, not with the herbs► What does it mean to “move the blood” and why is that important?► How does dan shen compare and contrast to hawthorn?► The role of humility and collaboration in herbalism► How to make a tincture with dan shen that supports the heart and the liver, the two major emotional systems in the body from a Chinese medicine perspective (be sure to download your recipe card!)Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “We can never say something is good or bad. We always have to say, ‘For who? What's the constitution? What's going on with them right now? When? What's the season or the climatic factors that's going on?' We can never answer ‘Is this a good herb or bad herb?'”For those who don't already know Toby, he received his undergraduate degree in Food Science from the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. He began studying Chinese medicine in 1997 with Sunim Doam, a Korean monk trained in the Saam tradition. He earned his master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2002 upon completion of training at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco and Chengdu University in China.During his four years of training in San Francisco, he interned with the prominent acupuncturist Dr. Angela Wu and learned to apply the lofty theories he was studying in school into the pragmatic setting of a busy clinic. In 2013, he developed the Chinese Nutritional Strategies app to provide digital access to the wealth of Chinese dietary wisdom. In 2016, proving that some people never learn, he completed a PhD in Classical Chinese Medicine under the guidance of 88th generation Daoist priest Jeffery Yuen. In 2021, he developed the Chinese Medical Characters app to enable direct access to foundational Chinese medical terms and concepts. He lectures internationally and in April 2023 he published his first book, An Introduction to Chinese Medicine: A Patient's Guide to Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Nutrition & More.I didn't know Toby prior to this episode and I really enjoyed getting to know him. I think that like me, you'll find him to be very sweet, endearing and super knowledgeable. He didn't even bat an eye when I interrupted him to talk about Tori Amos, so big score in my book. Your Wild Mind - The North + Protectors

This week, I'm going to be referencing one of my fave models of the human psyche, proposed by Bill Plotkin. It's really good medicine for many of the individual and societal challenges we are undergoing. In his book, Wild Mind: A Field Guide to the Human Psyche, Bill describes a nature-based map of the human psyche, using it to emphasize what can be right about us humans and where we can go wrong. Its basic premise is that our minds have amazing resources, untapped potential, and limitless depth - the extent of which we may not even be aware of.  Those “potentials” of our psyche are called the four facets of the self, the four dimensions of our innate home wholeness. Our innate Buddha nature, as I see it. Healing involves incorporating all parts of ourselves again. The goal in this work with our Wild Mind is to fully integrate all aspects of us - the whole of our multifaceted minds - and commit ourselves to our purpose so we can better serve our people. This helps us feel fulfilled, purposeful, and have a deep sense of belonging. The approach that's used here incorporates the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. Each has various qualities similar to those found in nature relating to these directions (and I've found they also correlate to elements we see in Classical Chinese Medicine and other constitutional and elemental-based traditions like Ayurveda). I can't cover all the facets in one pod, so this week, we're going to start with the North. It's described as the Nurturing Generative Adult. Examples of this are how you felt when you've cared for someone close to you (a parent, a pet, a kid, yourself). You might have noticed how good it felt to do so, and what an honor it was to do it. It also relates to when you feel satisfaction from bringing something from an idea to reality - an inspiration into a piece of art, a song, a book, a poem, an invention… It also means taking care of the things around you instead of disregarding and disrespecting them. We tap into our inherent wisdom, and cultivate discernment to accompany this wholeheartedness.  Being a grown-ass adult. When we are in conscious awareness of our Nurturing Adult, we're able to accept things about other people and do a whole lot less judging. We're less attached to things. We've created conditions for ourselves - and others - to heal, change, and mature. The integrated North is amazing, and I could go on and on about it, but what about when we're out of whack? I know most of us want to know how to fix it when shit ain't right. The way the wounded Nother shows up can be described in a few subpersonalities that create a false sense of safety and belonging. One way is our Inner Critic: How we shit-talk, shame, doubt, and talk down to ourselves from something we might want to take a risk for, closing us off to our greater possibilities and capacities. This is the most common one I see people asking about in coaching. We also might be encouraged to forego our dreams and needs to be useful to others - perhaps while also having power over them (people pleasers, enablers, co-dependent relationships etc). We may do our best to be indispensable to someone because we secretly fear that no one else would want to be with us.  There are many subpersonalities, and you can listent to the pod for more, but those two are some of the more common ones we dive into. All of these subs serve the purpose of keeping us safe - protecting us. Bill calls them the Loyal Soldiers. What they all have in common is to get us to act small, either by not expressing ourselves fully, or not embodying our potential, so that we have a sense of security and belonging in the world… even if we never actually feel like we belong. Their intention is good, and we have a false sense of security and safety, but at the expense of an authentic life. Most subpersonalities form in early childhood in response to physical, psychological, or social woundings. They exist to minimize the chance of more pain and suffering, but at a certain point in our personal development, their strategies get in the way of our growth way more than they provide a true sense of safety and belonging. Whatever the strategy, the Loyal Soldier's adamant about this: if you're forced to choose, it's better to be suppressed or inauthentic than kicked out of the community or emotionally devastated. Because what we think that would really feel like is death. Our truest Self knows there are options - for me I sought out therapy and coaching and this work with Bill and other Soul work - but when we're stuck in the wounded North, we might see only options like extreme buffering, or addiction or suicide, which is, in essence, turning the pain onto ourselves. So how can we cultivate a healthy relationship with this aspect of ourselves? We can start by connecting with our Loyal Soldiers. You'll hear the story of the Loyal Soldiers of Japan in the podcast, but we follow the same path that worked so well for them // We thank our Loyal Soldiers for their service. Maybe write a letter or recall all the specific incidents when they saved us. // Then, after thanking them and helping them feel loved and appreciated, we can also remind them that the war is over - AND that we have more resources now than we did “back then.” // Finally, we can give them another job. Perhaps we can call into awareness the ways they can apply discernment and protect us from real threats like potentially abusive partners and manipulative or toxic work environments. This piece is important because they are a part of us and won't just disappear. // We can also get important support from the facet of the Self in the opposite direction of the sub in question). In this case, it would be the South… but you'll have to check out next week's episode to learn more there!  In this episode you'll learn: // What it means to embody our Wild Mind and welcome ALL parts of our complex being (even the parts we don't like as much)// What it looks like when our “North” is balanced… and when we're out of whack// What our “Loyal Soldiers” are and how to integrate them in a healthy way// How we can cultivate genuine safety and a sense of belonging instead of the false sense that keeps us playing small Resources:// Episode 68: Integrity - Living Your Truth // Episode 82: How to Live in Polarity // Episode 139: Nature and Reconnecting // Wild Mind, by Bill Plotkin // If you're new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. NOTE : In the originally uploaded version of this podcast I made a minor error in the dates on the Gregorian calendar associated with the Triple Burner. It was corrected and reuploaded on 12/2/22).This is the second podcast in a 13 part series that will be released one per month. In the last episode, Eric provided a basic introduction to the Chinese medicine concept of organ systems. If you've not listened to it yet, and are new to Chinese medicine, you should go back and listen to that first. The Triple Burner is a unique organ system not fully tethered to a recognizable biomedical organ system, which is one of the reasons we've started with it. But the primary reason is that the time of the release of this podcast - between November and December 7 - is "Triple burner time" on the Chinese medicine organ clock. So, get cozy with a cup of tea and your favorite blanket, and dive into a little Chinese medicine geekery with Eric. You may also want to look at our Classical Chinese Medicine library page, which is being updated weekly with new information, to dig into some of these concepts. That page contains a lot of general information, but also a link to the special Triple Burner section of the site, which will contain more information on the symbols and concepts discussed in this podcast. If you have any questions or comments, head to our main podcast page and use the contact form to reach us.

This is Dr. Neal Sivula. I'm a veterinarian and owner of Dancing Paws Animal Wellness Center, a holistic veterinary practice located in beautiful Richfield, Ohio. Today I'll answer the question- "I love acupuncture for myself, can I get it for my pet?" Of course, you can! The basic acupuncture certification program for Veterinarians in the United States is a post-graduate course, usually around 200 hours in length. We learn Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture point locations, case management, and in some courses, students study herbal medicine as well. Some courses only teach TCM, others teach a combination of TCM and Medical Acupuncture, and some teach Medical Acupuncture exclusively. All courses offer a certification examination upon completion of the course and most require internship hours with a certified doctor and the submission of a few case reports to verify that the candidate can think logically through an acupuncture case.  Like our human acupuncture colleagues, the basic training is only the start of our journey in acupuncture. Our certifications require that we participate in approved continuing education courses in acupuncture. These range in topic from refresher courses on basic acupuncture theory all the way to instruction in other techniques like the Balance Method or Scalp Acupuncture, or in other philosophies like Classical Chinese Medicine. Certification is just a jumping off point for every acupuncturist I know, continual education makes us better acupuncturists.  Once trained, veterinarians use acupuncture in all sorts of ways in their practice. I am fortunate in that I am able to limit my practice to holistic medicine, while other doctors may offer acupuncture as something that they provide alongside their allopathic services. So how should one find an acupuncturist for their pet? That can be a little complicated, as we don't have a centralized database for all veterinary acupuncturists. Resources that provide practitioner location services include the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, Chi University, Curacore Academy, the Canine Rehabilitation Institute, and the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies. Of course, doctors that are seeking acupuncture patients will have that service listed on their practice websites as well.  If you're interested in hearing more about holistic veterinary medicine, I host “The Integrative Veterinarian" podcast where I have conversations with veterinarians and discuss their training and their lives as holistic practitioners. Acupuncture is as powerful in our animal friends as it is in humans, so don't forget to consider acupuncture when thinking about your pet's health!  Thanks for listening and be sure to tune in next week for the next Essential Point.  https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA ) Mentioned in this episode: https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA )

Today is the first of many podcasts to come, where we take a monograph-style deep dive into herbs and blends within the SuperFeast apothecary. Being 30 days of JING- and being our star foundation blend, it felt fitting to start with the JING blend.  In dialogue with Sophia- a long-time SuperFeast team member, stellar human being, and herb educator, Mason discusses the process of developing the JING blend, its beautiful balance of Yin/Yang herbs, and why it's an essential foundational blend for most people. We use the term foundational because the JING blend specifically focuses on servicing blood, core energy, libido, bones, marrow, longevity, brain capacity, youthfulness, buoyancy, and general hormonal regulation. In short, it's the blend to go to when you start to feel exhaustion and fatigue settling within your system. In this episode, Mason talks in depth about Jing essence- the driving force, resilience, and momentum that allows us to meet life with optimal capacity and stay grounded through the most challenging and animated times. As with everything we do at SuperFeast, the intention of evolving towards elderhood with grace and ease is bound to our Jing essence- our ability to cultivate, store and use it wisely. Mason goes through the individual herbs within the JING blend detailing their herbal actions, why he incorporated them in the blend, and the organ systems they tonify and work through. It's one thing to take a herb/blend and see results as they permeate through the body- but to understand the herbal actions and grasp how they work within your system- while feeling that action and seeing results takes healing to another level. Mason also weaves in a few of the mystical lore-based Classical Chinese Medicine stories behind some of the individual herbs, taking us back to the magical roots of this revered ancient herbal system.   Mason and Sophia discuss: -Jing, Qi and Shen. -Jing and Lung function. -Jing and Spleen function. -Jing and Kidney function -Prenatal and postnatal Jing. -Herbal actions of the JING blend. -Signs of Jing depletion within the body.  -Why JING blend is great for menopause. -How JING blend stops premature ageing. -When to incorporate JING blend into your life. -JING testimonials that have transformed lives. -How the JING blend services the Kidneys and Lungs. -Sourcing regions and Di Dao for each of the herbs in JING blend. -JING blend; a great grounding-introductory product to the SuperFeast range.   Check Out The Transcript Here: https://www.superfeast.com.au/blogs/articles/jing-with-mason-ep-172

Nobody knows you better than you know yourself. In Qigong, a holistic classical Chinese approach to health and wellness, this idea is known as “the superior doctor” – and today's guest, healer and teacher Chris Shelton, tells us how we can each become our own superior doctor.  “We have a saying that the superior doctor is one that could prevent disease before disease sets in. The great thing about Qigong is that it creates an awareness within yourself to where you become your own superior doctor. So our big mission is self-empowerment.” Chris found Qigong after a difficult childhood, multiple heart attacks and a painful back injury that left him feeling hopeless. In this episode, he shares how classical Chinese medicine changed his mind, his outlook, and his life – and how it could change yours, too. “The style of Qigong that I teach is for your mental, emotional wellness, because according to classical Chinese medicine, the leading cause of death and disease besides poor diet is emotional trauma. And what's amazing is that when I see a patient in clinic, I have so many tools to diagnose or assess the situation. I could take their pulse. I could look at their tongue just like the acupuncturists, but one of the favorite things I like to do is look at a person's face. And every feature on a person's face tells me a story of how the person thinks – what kind of trauma that they've been through, their personality.” Chris also shares his journey as a healer, how he's seen people change their lives with Qigong and tai chi, where the body stores trauma and his message of hope.  “Even in the darkest hour, always hold onto that little glimmer of light because the light will always outshine the darkness. Don't get caught up into the negativity, look at the light and you be that beacon of light because in order to create change, you have to change yourself. And how do you change yourself? You change your paradigm for which you think. So in order for you to be that beacon and light, yes, educate yourself. Be aware of what's going on in the world, but be that beacon of light and be mindful over what you think.”   In This Episode (01:05) What Qigong and tai chi are  (03:31) Chris' story, his journey as a healer and how he became a tai chi master (08:20) Reducing stress and pain by tapping into your chi (12:31) Breathing through stored trauma (25:43) The root of pain (31:32) The hardest challenge Chris has overcome (36:54) Chris' message of hope   Guest Chris Shelton is a healer, teacher and Qigong master who has dedicated his life to helping people reduce stress and pain. He has worked with professional athletes, Special Olympics teams, and celebrities and thousands of others around the world.  Chris is the founder of Morning Crane Healing Arts Center in California, co-created The Qi Club and Qigong Teacher Training and is the author of “Qigong for Self-Refinement.”   Resources & Links 52 Weeks of Hope Visit my website  Subscribe to my Youtube Channel  Visit my Facebook page Follow me on Instagram Let's talk on Twitter!   Chris Shelton Training Facebook Twitter YouTube Instagram TikTok

Something new and much more personal for this Full Moon: You're about to hear me share a series of 3 of the most potent dreams of my life, and how they've been woven into my healing. There's the personal physical level, the ancestral, and the societal levels. There's a yurt at the sandy confluence of two rivers; a computer to reprogram; a devil prince; an invader and a martial arts master; a golden sword; and a poem about autoimmunity, hatred, and living “In the Time of Choice.” It's a full two hours!May this bring you some a-ha's of your own, a different perspective, or new questions to explore.I'm the guest in this conversation, hosted by my friend Steve Ernenwein, the dreamer in our recorded dream group (Episode 33). This is an episode of the podcast Steve hosts with JM DeBord, called The Dreams that Shape Us. They are breaking down the myth that “dreams don't mean anything” one powerful story at a time. I know if you're here, you probably don't think “dreams don't mean anything,” so for you their show is a delicious chance to hear individual people thoroughly share their powerful dreams, with original music and dreamy sounds by Steve in every episode. So after you listen to this, be sure to check out their podcast, The Dreams that Shape Us, for more. This is Episode 35 of The Dreamers' Den Podcast and the final one that will be released under this name. After a pause for some deep, slow breaths, quite a bit of website work, and a few exciting conversations, I will be back on the Full Moon in September and this podcast will show up in your feed under a new name:Turning Season. You'll be hearing conversations between me and all kinds of healers and changemakers of “The Great Turning” — which is a name for this enormous transition humanity is making toward life-sustaining societies. If you're feeling concerned (or beyond concerned!) about “the great unraveling,” this podcast will become your regular dose of active hope, heart-to-heart connection, expanded awareness of how much is being done already, and glimpse of what's possible. The first few conversations will be with dreamworkers whose contribution to the Great Turning includes their dreamwork. You'll hear from Ariella Daly again, about natural beekeeping, and bees as wisdom teachers. Matt Cochran will return to talk about men's work. I'll share more about my role as a Classical Chinese Medicine practitioner, parent, grower of food, and … host of Turning Season Podcast! With future guests I'll be diving into everything from circular economics to personal trauma healing; composting toilets to decolonization; art as activism to protecting thriving ecosystems; new technological innovations to pleasure as revolutionary…You get the idea.I'm also excited to talk with people who might not identify as a healer or a changemaker, an activist or a visionary, but are rising to their role in the Great Turning in the way they live their everyday lives. Raise your hand (or, better yet, leave a comment on the show notes, so I can see it too) if you've ever dreamt of a political figure you strongly dislike. When they showed up in dream-form, how did you engage with them? When dreamers have shared dreams of political figures who were the object of anger or disgust, I've seen transformative shifts in perspective unfold. In this episode, my guest Cythera Wilkerson (another acupuncturist and dreamworker! yes!) talks about, for example, dreaming of Trump, and discovering the connection between feelings toward him, and feelings from childhood. This type of realization is one of the things I value most about dreamwork, on the personal and the collective level: when we are more aware, more clear, and less clouded by reactivity or trauma, we're available to take more wise, heart-ful action in the world. I highlight that moment in this conversation because, in the very near future, I'm expanding this podcast to include much more than dreamwork. Along with dreamworkers, I'll be including guests doing all kinds of work that contribute to The Great Turning of human society toward a life-sustaining way of being on the planet. I share a little more about that in the intro to this episode, and there's much more to come. She has a Masters in Oriental Medicine and has been active in a dreamwork training through the Haden Institute that opened up a whole new world of healing. She practices in her beloved Appalachian mountains at Medicine of the Heart. Cythera honors the work of the divine feminine, which is subtle, body-focused, and slow. She feels that in our fast-paced society it is a space that we and our earth are desperately asking for us to honor. It's so fulfilling to connect with Cythera and her beautiful work, and I hope you'll be filled by this conversation too. My fellow acupuncturist, dreamworker, and NUNM grad Joseph Fiala joins me to talk about dreamwork in his clinical practice, in his personal life, and in nurturing the thoughts we choose to grow in the gardens of our minds. I remember his wife Emaline Gray telling me about a dream she'd had of an ear over Frankfort, Kentucky, and the name "The Light Clinic." More than 10 years later ("the algorithm" doing what it does best), Instagram suggested to me that I follow an account called "The Light Clinic." I recognized the name from Emaline's dream and, sure enough, the account was for the integrative health clinic in Frankfort that she and Joseph had founded just after graduating. Even better, I discovered that dreamwork has become a significant part of their practices, too.In this episode, Joseph and I talk about exploring dreams with our patients. Both of us engage in dreamwork during acupuncture appointments, often while doing "hands-on" work like CranioSacral Therapy. You'll also hear us talk about:- a big dream that connected Joseph's dreamwork training program, his Chinese Medicine practice, and his shift into more groundedness and embodiment- dreamwork as a transformational tool that complements what we practice with acupuncture and herbal medicine- "following" a dream in the physical body- using a Qigong practice of shaking to move the emotions that arise in dreams, and to help unwind long-held patterns- how I've seen Classical Chinese Medicine symbols of herbal formulas and the Five Elements in dreams- the importance of "ritual," or bringing the dream into the physical, external world by acting on it somehow (with an example dream from a friend, who acted on her dream by riding in an elevator...)- and the potency of pairing dreamwork with one more of Joseph's passions: thought training to intentionally cultivate the thoughts that support the way we want to feelClick Play to listen -- and then I'd love to hear from you.Any dreams come to mind?
