Today's Guest President of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, Connie was educated at Johns Hopkins and New York University, she obtained her PhD in 2004 from Lynn University to have a bigger voice for family caregivers. Connie never expected her doctoral research to uncover the high prevalence of family health situations and concomitant caregiving with detrimental academic effects upon children in Palm Beach County. Her broad background in healthcare and dedication to diminishing caregiver isolation and struggles led to the 1998 establishment of what is now the American Association for Caregiving Youth. It includes the Caregiving Youth Project, the first US program to support the hidden population of child caregivers. Her dream is for all family caregivers to be honored and respected but especially youth for their contributions to family and to society; no child in the US should have to drop out of school because he or she has to care for a family member. In June of 2009, Connie was awarded a lifetime Ashoka Fellowship and in October 2009 she became one of 10 Purpose Prize winners, a national endeavor honoring persons over 60 years of age who initiated an innovative solution for social change. In September 2010 The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association presented her with The Distinguished Alumna Award. In 2011 AACY won the Palm Beach County Medical Society's Heroes in Medicine Award for Community Outreach and later that year Connie was named a Woman of Grace by Bethesda Hospital Foundation. During May 2012 she was named a CNN Hero and in September was one the Top Ten Heroes for 2012. https://aacy.org/ About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California. In this wrap-up episode, we discussed the "Caregiving Youth Hidden in Plain Sight" special series, a collaboration between JJ and Natalie and My Care Friends CEO Todd Keitz and Katie Seymour (VP of Programming and Community). We were all amazed at how eye-opening it was to learn about the challenges faced by young people caring for family members with disabilities or illnesses. We highlighted the wisdom and resilience shown by many of the youth caregivers featured while acknowledging the need to support those struggling. In this episode, we underscored the vital role of policies, programs, and community coordination in identifying and assisting youth caregivers, drawing inspiration from successful initiatives in the UK. We stressed the ongoing need to raise awareness and provide resources to connect youth caregivers with the support they need. We urged our listeners to visit the podcast's website, where they can access the full series and contact information for the various organizations featured. We aim to create a centralized hub of information, empowering and assisting this often-overlooked population. We also discussed the hidden nature of many caregiving programs and the challenge of self-identification among youth caregivers. We discussed ways to help overlooked youth, including a broader focus beyond the US, and the significance of awareness within the community, including schools and teachers. A hidden population of children serve as caregivers for family members who are chronically ill, elderly, disabled or injured. Left out of the systems that support adult caregivers, these youths often sacrifice their education, health, well-being, and childhoods. Connie Siskowski, founder and president of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, and Dr. Julie Belkowitz, a pediatrician at the University of Miami School of Medicine talk with Dr. Josh Sharfstein about these young people and the enormous responsibilities they take on, and what is needed to help support them so they can thrive. All Home Care Matters was honored to welcome Todd "TJ" Keitz as guest to the show. Todd has been a lifelong social good evangelist! He has woven community engagement and social impact into his life since he was a teenager volunteering in senior living centers. Over decades, he has created inter-generational programs to build bridges within families and communities, volunteered as a “hugger” for Special Olympics, developed business curriculum for high schools, taught in inner-city schools for Junior Achievement, been a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and worked in the healthcare industry – consulting with major employers, hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies, and other entities. Further, he's also proud of the work he did consulting in the 2000s with the South Korean government related to technology companies. Through all of this, Todd became even more driven to translate his personal ethos on a much larger scale within his professional life. In 2012, he co-founded and served as CEO of Stock4Good, to make the process infinity easier for individuals to donate stock of publicly held companies to 501(c)3 organizations. In 2018, he relocated to Florida to become primary caregiver and patient advocate for his mom and dad – each with life threatening diseases. During those experiences, Todd saw first-hand the many challenges all caregivers and patient advocates face. That led him to create My Care Friends, a unique, new website for caregivers and patient advocates to connect and support each other. Additionally, Todd currently serves on the National Advisory Council of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, which brings greater awareness to the needs of over 5.4 million caregiving youth in the U.S. He also sits on the board of SayAh! - a nonprofit focused on improving health literacy across the U.S. About My Care Friends: My Care Friends TM was born out of caregiving and advocacy experiences that the founder/CEO, Todd Keitz, has had throughout his life. This started at nine years old for his uncle and continued 20 years later for his sister after a horrific car accident. Over the following decade, he helped his mom care/advocate for his grandparents before they passed, and since 2018 he has been primary caregiver and advocate for her and his dad who have been battling life threatening diseases. Considering the depth of all that, combined with Todd's business experiences over decades in and with the healthcare industry, it's apparent where the passion and mission for My Care Friends comes from! That mission is two-fold: 1) To enable caregivers and patient advocates to meaningfully and easily connect in a safe online community, with others in similar roles – so they are “seen”, “heard” and “understood.” Whether communicating about a caregiving, patient advocacy, or personal interest topic, My Care Friends provides many ways for community members to Connect. Share. Support.TM 2) To provide online and offline educational programs and resources, which puts forth robust and relevant content that gives caregivers and patient advocates information and tools to be more knowledgeable, confident, and effective in their roles. My Care Friends encourages all caregivers, patients advocates, loved ones and patients themselves to create a FREE account at www.mycarefriends.com to Connect. Share. Support. each other and to stay informed about offline programming!

Connie Siskowski, R.N., Ph.D., and a CNN Hero award recipient, works to help the millions of children who go home to be essential caregivers, and who therefore have special caring needs, miss a lot of normal adolescence, and so absolutely require help and acknowledgement. She started the American Association of Caregiving Youth to face this task. The efforts include integration with local schools, of social workers that go into the homes, getting laws to address the funding needs, that some states can remove and place the caregiving children into foster care, etc. But in particular is the focus to help these children not to feel alone, frustrated, etc. This is too quiet a reality for many children.

Episode 23 offers a look at three "home grown" non-profits. Each was the result of residents seeing a need and taking the initiative to address it, head-on. Donna Biase and her friend (and co-founder) Debbie Ellman were two PTA presidents who embarked on a middle school community service project. After meeting several adolescents from a shelter who had aged out of foster care, they realized there was a critical need for mentoring and support and so was born Best Foot Forward. Connie Siskowski had a similar epiphany as she realized thousands of children in Plam Beach County become the caregivers for an adult in their family. Those responsibilities would be difficult enough for adults but for children trying to do their school work, the burden can be overwhelming. Dr Siskowski founded American Association of Caregiving Youth to create a support network for these families. Finally, the idea that many children in our community do not have a safe, clean, and appropriate place to rest their heads at night was eye-opening for Suzy Broad. She recognized the need for kids to have adequate rest to start the day refreshed and ready for school. She founded Sweet Dream Makers. In five short years, she has helped over 4600 families, distributing almost 10,000 beds! These three women, and their legion of volunteers and supporters, are making a difference in South Palm Beach County.

The Agewyz Podcast is on a summer break and will be back with all new episodes starting September 14th. Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy this popular rebroadcast: We often think of caregiving as something only adults do, but in the US there are at least 1.3 million youth caregivers (ages 8 to 18), many of them forced to drop out of school to provide care to a family member. That's what happened when a surgical error left Feylyn Lewis' mother in need of 24/7 care. Feylyn was just eleven years old at the time and her parents were divorced, so her 18-year old brother left college to care for their mother and even took a job to pay the mortgage. In today's show, Feylyn talks about her brother's sacrifice on behalf of their family and what it was like to grow up with a mom who needed constant care. Currently in England completing a PhD focused on identity development in young adult caregivers between the ages of 18 and 25, Feylyn also shares some of her research results and tells us how support for youth caregivers in the UK differs from support in the US. In this Episode Dr. Connie Siskowski, founder of the American Association for Caregiving Youth awakens us to the reality that 1.4 million children in this country sacrifice their education, health, well-being and childhood to provide care for family members who are ill, injured, aging or have disabilities. Isolated, often facing tasks and medical responsibilities that would challenge adults, these children are often invisible to schools and communities. Dr. Siskowski, who was recognized as one of the CNN's Top Ten Heroes in 2012 offers a powerful answer. In the back and forth with host, Suzanne Phillips, she shares her personal history and the motivation for developing The American Association for Caregiving Youth, which includes “The Caregiving Youth Project.” She is joined by the professional interdisciplinary team of this project, Dr. Anne Faraone, Kim Fort LMSW and Cara Zimmerman MSW who share their roles in making the lives of child caregivers possible, healthy and hopeful.
Dr. Connie Siskowski founded the Florida-based American Association of Caregiving Youth to meet the needs of eight to eighteen-year-olds who sacrifice their health, education and childhoods to care for relatives or household members who are ill, disabled or elderly, or battling other conditions such as substance abuse. In this episode, Connie talks about how caring for her grandfather as a child affected her own adolescence, the history of the AACY and its programs and services aimed at students and their families. She also explains how the economy and changing structure of the family is affecting youth caregivers and why this demographic—estimated at 1.4 million in the US—is often overlooked in conversations about care. Feylyn Lewis is a millennial from Nashville, Tennessee who's doing her PhD thesis on identity development in young adult caregivers in the US and UK. She has firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by this often overlooked group: when she was eleven years old, complications from a surgery left her mother—a former nurse—with a physical disability and Feylyn's brother left college to become mom's full-time caregiver. In today's episode Feylyn talks about what it was like growing up with a mother who needed 24/7 care, her brother's incredible sacrifice on behalf of their family and how young adult caregivers can be supported through the transition into adulthood.
