UiOs menneskerettighetspris gikk i 2024 til Forgotten Children of War Association i Sarajevo.

Send us a Text Message. In 1949, 13 year old Pamela Smedley boarded a ship with 27 other girls from a Catholic orphanage in Britain. The nuns told them they were going on a day trip. The girls were excited, happy to be out in the world, on an adventure. According to Pamela, quote “We thought it would be like going to Scarborough for the day because we were so innocent and naive.” But they weren't going to Scarborough. They were going to Australia, for good. Four extremely difficult decades would pass before Pamela would return home to Britain and finally reunite with her family, her mother who had been waiting for her all those years, wondering. The girls on that ship were part of Britain's child migrant program which sent an estimated 150,000 children to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Rhodesia during the 19th and 20th centuries. The press at the time reported that these children were being sent to loving families, taken into homes, and raised in caring environments. But did you know, that was all a lie? Let's fix that. Sigle's out now "Necromanteum" and 'Death's Forgotten Children' which features Tom Barber of CHELSEA GRIN
Carnifex vocalist Scott Ian Lewis is our guest this week! We discuss their latest album Necromanteum, if he revisits the back catalog on a regular basis, the album fan's love that he isn't sold on, the therapy of heavy music for the band and fans, the importance of looking for a deeper meaning in all art, if he feels fan's are loyal to any streaming services, his thoughts on if film has lost the battle of being art, the honor code bands and fans have in the music industry not reflecting those that run it, companies with the most power continually running at a loss, and why unionizing the music industry may not be possible in modern times. Petar and Brandon discuss the whirlwind of Chris McMahon getting let go by Thy Art Is Murder, how he found out he was no longer in the band, certain peers like Ronnie Radke taking sides with him, and our thoughts on how the split was handled. HOW TO DEAL WITH ADULT CHILDREN DURING A DIVORCE. EP 99. HOST: Beverly Price, Divorce & Empowerment Coach GUEST: Linda Hershman, Licenced Marriage and Family Therapist SUMMARY: In the tumultuous process of divorce, our focus tends to gravitate toward the younger ones caught in the midst of it all, inadvertently sidelining the experiences of adult children, who can also be profoundly affected. Adult children are often unfairly perceived as resilient and self-reliant individuals capable of weathering any storm, a misconception that discredits their feelings and emotional experiences during their parents' separation. In this episode of Her Empowered Divorce, your Host, Beverly Price, talks to Linda Hershman, a returning guest who is a Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist and the author of Gray Divorce. They discuss this lesser-explored topic: gray divorce and its impact on older children and why acknowledging the vulnerability of adult children and providing them with the support they need is as crucial as safeguarding the interests of the younger ones.Divorce doesn't have to be a death sentence. With the right support and guidance, you can move through the process with knowledge, skills, and confidence. If you'd like to schedule a complimentary private consultation, reach out to Beverly at: https://beverly-price.as.me/Consultation. KEY TAKEAWAYS: What is the phenomenon of adult children and divorce? Divorce's impact on adult children is considered part of ambiguous losses. These are losses that are not recognized by society as losses and for which there is no community support. It's not simple for adult children of divorce (ACODs); they experience many losses, such as family traditions, financial losses, and broken promises, that may devastate them. Listen to them, ask them, validate their feelings, and encourage them to get their own support. Why is parent splitting when children are first going to college the worst time ever? Going to college is a transition time, and divorce impedes this transition. Children get stuck with one leg at school and the other at home and are constantly worrying about what is going on at home. What is the financial implication of divorce on ACODs? So many adult children organize their lives around their parents' promises, but they are broken by divorce and loss of childcare.Regardless of your child's age, don't put them in the middle of your divorce. Your children are your children, not your friends; do not lean on them for any support, get your own support system in place, and don't look to your adult children to parent you. NOTABLE QUOTES:People tend to assume that because ACODs are adults, they have their own lives, and they can understand what is happening and deal with it, but in reality, ACODs suffer very different and sometimes even worse losses in the divorce process than their younger counterparts. (Linda)Remember, even though they are adults, they will always be your children; don't lean on them as if they were your friends. Don't complain about the other spouses or make your children feel sorry for you that they become the parent-to-parent and fix you. (Beverly)The worst time for parents to split up is when their kids are first going off to college. Going...

Barri Cohen, Brian Logie and Face2Face host David Peck talk about Unloved: Huronia's Forgotten Children, trauma, empathy and love, “othering”, labels and woodcarving, oppression, institutions and junk science, capitalism and dehumanization and why it's so important to never forget. For more info head here and www.remembereveryname.comBlurb:Filmmaker Barri Cohen leads part detective story, part social history in UnLoved: Huronia's Forgotten Children as she uncovers the truth about Alfie and Louis, her two long-dead half-brothers. They were institutionalized at the Huronia Regional Centre in Orillia in the 1950s, with one brother unceremoniously buried in secret in an unmarked grave as a small child. Their lives were cut short, but their story stands as a microcosm of the immense tragedy of the western world's 20th century disastrous treatment of intellectually disabled children and youth - a question preoccupies the film: how do we allow ourselves to dehumanize the most vulnerable people in our care?UnLoved: Huronia's Forgotten Children is a heartbreaking yet redemptive work that moves outwards from a highly personal and painful family secret to an investigation of hidden, searing truths about an entire government-enabled system of institutional cruelty and ugliness against vulnerable children. Yet, humanity is hopefully restored by assembling community and survivor testimony, along with the filmmaker's insistence that these experiences be fully recognized and memorialized.About Barri:Barri Cohen is an award-winning writer, director, and producer whose career spans over 20 years of making independent documentaries and television series acrossa range of genres from lifestyle to comedy for general and specialty audiences in Canada and around the world. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Barri Cohen, Award-Winning Documentary Filmmaker, “UNLOVED - HURONIA'S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Barri Cohen, is an award-winning filmmaker, best known for documentaries focusing on health, mental health, environmental and social justice issues. Some of her best known works include her feature documentary entitled, “Toxic Trespass: Children's Health & The Environment”, “Toxic Beauty” and “Girls Night Out”. Her latest film adds to the recent revelations here in Canada, of brutal legacies of neglect, abuse, violence and the trauma inflicted on our most vulnerable citizens. We know about the tragic and horrendous plight of Indigenous children in residential schools. We've learned what's happened to many children at the hands of Catholic priests. We've heard about the treatment of elderly people isolated in nursing homes. And now, thanks to our guest, we're learning about the shameful and horrific treatment of disabled, institutionalized children, in her multi-award winning documentary entitled, “UNLOVED - HURONIA'S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN”. The movie takes us on an intensely personal journey of the filmmaker's quest to uncover the mystery of what happened to her 2 long-deceased, intellectually disabled half-brothers, who were rarely talked about, after they were institutionalized in the 1950's at a government run facility in Orillia, Ontario, first opened in 1876, and called the “Ontario Hospital School”. It was neither a hospital nor a school. In 1945, it was renamed the Huronia Regional Center, and it operated until it was finally closed in 2009, after having held captive, tens of thousands of vulnerable children and youth, who suffered dehumanizing treatment. That institution forms part of the immense tragedy of Canada's, and the 20th century's, disastrous treatment of intellectually disabled children. In the film we meet a number of survivors who speak frankly about the physical, emotional and sexual abuse and trauma they endured, and the landmark class action lawsuit they brought against the Ontario government, which was finally settled in 2013. The film, written and directed by our guest, will be televised in Canada on the CBC network on Sunday January 29, and will then be available on CBC GEM. Our guest was the co-chair and a founding member of the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival. She was the National Executive Chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada. And she's the former editor and publisher, and currently a columnist, at Point of View Magazine. And if that weren't enough, she's currently studying psychoanalysis. Imagine growing up in a time and a place where women are second class citizens, and sexuality is not only a taboo topic, but exposing the fact that you've been sexually active will get you socially ostracized, locked up and even possibly killed. Disparaged as "Japanese devils" and "half-breed," some children with Chinese mothers and Japanese fathers born during the Second Sino-Japanese war long looked to Japan as their true homeland. Learn about this largely unseen group of individuals, just a few of the countless children born of war who have dealt with extreme social and political adversities as well as persistent questions of self identity. Kanako Kuramitsu speaks to Satoko Naito to share her research on children born of consensual relationships between Chinese mothers and Japanese fathers during and after the Second Sino-Japanese war, particularly those who migrated to Japan after the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations in 1972. Her work highlights men and women who, while sharing the many hardships of other children born of war, stand out for their strong identification with their fathers and their paternal country. The participants of Dr. Kuramitsu's study underscore the far-reaching effects of military conflict while simultaneously reminding us of the complexity of each individual's life story. The animation film "Michiko," mentioned in the episode, is available to view here. Kanako Kuramitsu received her PhD from the University of Birmingham and is currently a visiting scholar at the Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS) at the University of Turku in Finland. Satoko Naito studies and teaches Japanese literature and film as a docent at CEAS and holds a PhD from Columbia University.
