Today's Episode The professional world is changing fast, and gone are the days of going to Kinko's to print out 20 copies of your resume on special paper you bought at Office Depot before mailing them off to potential employers. Now, businesses large and small use software called Applicant Tracking System (ATS), a form of artificial intelligence (AI) that scans resumes for keywords before they are reviewed by hiring managers. According to the Harvard Business School, 75% of resumes are rejected by ATS, with 88 to 94% of highly qualified applicants being rejected by the algorithm before a human lays eyes on them. About Dr. Castonguay Dr. Brittany Castonguay, owner and CEO of Strategic Human Resources & Innovations (SHRI), shares expert tips and tricks to understand how AI is being used by employers, and what you can do to beat the algorithms and land your dream job! He speaks on tours at conferences, civic organizations, senior communities, libraries, and much more around the country. He has given more than 600 presentations since launching his awareness campaign in 2016. Whether in Texas, Idaho, New York, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, or even closer to home, caregivers tell Marty that his message gives them encouragement and hope that they can manage their challenging situation. Marty's book, My Two Elaine's: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer's Caregiver, is a winning acclaim from caregivers across the country. It was rated as the number 11 best Alzheimer's book of all time by bookauthority.org and was named to the caring.com list of best caregiving books of both 2017 and 2018. Today's Guest President of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, Connie was educated at Johns Hopkins and New York University, she obtained her PhD in 2004 from Lynn University to have a bigger voice for family caregivers. Connie never expected her doctoral research to uncover the high prevalence of family health situations and concomitant caregiving with detrimental academic effects upon children in Palm Beach County. Her broad background in healthcare and dedication to diminishing caregiver isolation and struggles led to the 1998 establishment of what is now the American Association for Caregiving Youth. It includes the Caregiving Youth Project, the first US program to support the hidden population of child caregivers. Her dream is for all family caregivers to be honored and respected but especially youth for their contributions to family and to society; no child in the US should have to drop out of school because he or she has to care for a family member. In June of 2009, Connie was awarded a lifetime Ashoka Fellowship and in October 2009 she became one of 10 Purpose Prize winners, a national endeavor honoring persons over 60 years of age who initiated an innovative solution for social change. In September 2010 The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association presented her with The Distinguished Alumna Award. In 2011 AACY won the Palm Beach County Medical Society's Heroes in Medicine Award for Community Outreach and later that year Connie was named a Woman of Grace by Bethesda Hospital Foundation. During May 2012 she was named a CNN Hero and in September was one the Top Ten Heroes for 2012. https://aacy.org/ About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California. Today's Episode Dr. Raj is joined by Todd Keitz of the “Caregiving Insights” podcast to talk with father/daughter duo Alex and John about their joint adventures working together as EMTs in Connecticut. Today's Guest Alex is about to finish up her Neuroscience degree at Middlebury College with a minor in Theatre. During her time as a student, Alex took off a semester to work as a medical assistant at a local hospital in Vermont to help alleviate the staffing issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Outside of medicine, Alex performs with an improv comedy troupe and an acapella group on campus and has starred in the occasional short film. We often hear of a child following a parent's footsteps by going into the family business or going into the same line of work. That being said, it's probably less likely you've heard of a daughter or son becoming an EMT because their dad was an EMT - and following in her dad's footsteps she also became an EMT at the age of 16. John spent his professional career in advertising and marketing in the US and Europe, but always had an interest in medicine and first aid. It wasn't until his kids were in high school that he felt he could take the time to become an EMT. Fortunately, the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Wilton, CT sponsors two EMT classes a year for its residents. John completed the course and became a licensed EMT and NREMT in December of 2016. He went on to volunteer for the next six years including the intense period during the COVID-19 lockdown in the New York area. John also served as Secretary and President of the Wilton Corps of EMTs. Training young EMTs is a central objective to WVAC, and unlike many services, the group accepts EMTs as young as 16 years old. Last year, John and his wife bought a small inn on Cape Cod and had to leave WVAC. He will never forget how much he learned and grew through serving as an EMT including the notable life experience and sharing several shifts on the ambulance with his daughter Alex. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Dr. Rudy Tanzi about his work in Alzheimer's Disease research, his acronym SHIELD for evading its progression, and how his background as a musician has intersected with this work. Today's Guest Dr. Tanzi is the Vice-Chair of Neurology, Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Co-Director of the Henry and Allison McCance Center for Brain Health, and Co-Director of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also serves as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tanzi received his BS (microbiology) and BA (history) at the University of Rochester in 1980 and his PhD (neurobiology) at Harvard Medical School in 1990. Dr. Tanzi co-discovered the first Alzheimer's disease (AD) gene, the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene, and the two other early-onset familial AD genes, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2. As leader of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Alzheimer's Genome Project, Dr. Tanzi identified several other AD genes, including CD33, the first AD gene shown to regulate neuroinflammation. He also discovered the Wilson's disease gene and other neurological disease genes. Dr. Tanzi's team was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional neural-glial; cell culture organoids of AD, dubbed “Alzheimer's-in-a-Dish”. This model was the first to recapitulate all three key AD pathological hallmarks in vitro, and first to definitively show that amyloid plaques directly cause neurofibrillary tangles - and also made drug screening for AD faster and more cost-effective. Using this system, Dr. Tanzi has developed several novel therapies for AD including gamma secretase modulators targeting amyloid pathology and AMX0035, which was already successful in a clinical trial of ALS and now seeking FDA approval. Dr. Tanzi also discovered that beta-amyloid plays a functional role in the brain as an anti-microbial peptide, supporting a role for infection in AD pathology. Dr. Tanzi serves as Chair of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Research Leadership Group and numerous advisory and editorial boards. He has been named to TIME magazine's list of TIME100 Most Influential People in the World. Dr. Tanzi is a New York Times bestselling author who has co-authored the books Decoding Darkness, and the bestsellers Super Brain, Super Genes, and The Healing Self with Dr. Deepak Chopra. Dr. Tanzi has hosted several shows on public television, regularly appears on television news programs, and has testified to Congress on both Alzheimer's disease and brain health. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Valerie Hernandez about her journey into the world of interior design, sourcing vintage home pieces for her company, and how her background as a nurse highlighted how much living spaces impact our well-being. Today's Guest Valerie Hernandez is a registered nurse, wife and mom of two toddler boys. She started her career in the healthcare field as that was your dream since the age of 13 and remains a big part of who she is today. Soon after becoming a nurse, she and her husband bought their first home in 2016 and have completely renovated it from top to bottom. As a nurse, she learned firsthand how our exterior spaces directly impact our daily lives and the importance of how the spaces in which we live make us feel. As many can relate during COVID, she and her husband realized their home was missing that cohesive, curated, and timeless feeling. Her love for interior design, and more specifically secondhand vintage decor, became a much-needed creative outlet for her. After a hard day at the hospital, her new hobby of sourcing, researching, and mindfully selecting pieces for her home became a complete transformation of the way she views home style. She decided she wanted to make her passion more than just a hobby, so she started her own business Grounded Home Designs. Grounded Home Designs brings you a refreshing take on mixing old with new. They have interior decorating services to carefully sourced high quality vintage pieces for others to enjoy. “We believe in creating well-balanced spaces that bring Comfort function in a curated space for years to come. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Todd Keitz, the creator of My Care Friends, a community of advocates for patients and caregivers. Together, they delve into their own caregiving journeys, shedding light on the significance of advocacy in fostering empathy and enhancing mutual understanding within the healthcare sphere. Today's Guest Todd has been a lifelong social good evangelist! His personal ethos is “Paying It Forward” in a myriad of ways. He has woven community engagement and social impact into his life since he was a teenager volunteering in senior living centers. Over decades, he has created intergenerational programs to build bridges within families and communities, volunteered as a strategist and “hugger” for Special Olympics, developed business curriculum for high schools, taught for Junior Achievement within intercity Philadelphia, and been a group mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Through all of this, Todd became even more driven to translate his personal ethos on a much larger scale within his professional life. In 2012, he co-founded and served as CEO of Stock4Good, to make the process infinitely easier for individuals to donate stock of publicly held companies to 501(c)3 organizations. In 2018, he relocated to Florida to become caregiver and patient advocate for his mom and dad – each with life threatening diseases. During those experiences, Todd saw first-hand the many challenges all caregivers and patient advocates face. That led him to create My Care Friends, a unique web app for caregivers and patient advocates to connect and support each other. Additionally, Todd is Founder/CEO of 17 Commerce, which represents products at the crossroads of healthcare and technology. In addition to his role with AACY, he currently serves on the board of Say Ah! – a health literacy nonprofit changing the way people think about their health and healthcare, and the way the healthcare system interacts with the people who need it. Todd earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Kamlesh D. Patel (Daaji), delving into his journey from a pharmacist to an advocate of heartfulness meditation. They explore how he incorporated this practice into his daily routine and went on to initiate a global movement, empowering individuals worldwide to embrace heartfulness. Today's Guest Born in Gujarat in 1956, Kamlesh D. Patel (Daaji) displayed an early interest in meditation and spirituality. He started Heartfulness Meditation at the age of nineteen while studying to be a pharmacist. Soon after, he met his first Guru, Babuji, the second guide in the Heartfulness lineage. After graduating with honors from L.M. College of Pharmacy in Ahmedabad, Daaji married and moved to New York City. There, he and his wife raised their two sons, while he steadily built a successful pharmacy business. At the same time, Daaji continued to pursue his love of meditation as a devoted disciple of Babuji's successor, Chariji. Over the years, Daaji played an increasingly active role in the Heartfulness Movement, both organisationally and by spreading its message and teaching its method. In 2011, Chariji selected Daaji as his spiritual successor. As the leader of the Heartfulness Movement, Daaji now fulfills the many duties of a modern-day guru, traveling widely and extending his support to seekers everywhere. Daaji firmly believes in nourishing today's youth with practical self-management tools and universal values. Under his guidance, students and faculty in over 2,500 schools, universities, and colleges are now benefitting from a portfolio of value-based self-development programs. As a self-professed student of spirituality, Daaji devotes much of his time and energy to his personal research in the field of spirituality and consciousness, and regularly shares his findings through public speaking engagements, his website, and social media platforms, and in broadcast, print, and digital media. Daaji's articles have appeared in various leading publications including Huffington Post, Chicago Tribune, Times of India, and Business Standard. His well-received Radio City Swaran series, Dil Ki Awaaz, ran for twelve episodes. Daaji advocates bridging ancient tradition with modern scientific understanding and has assembled a team of one hundred scientists to research the physiological and genetic effects of meditation and yogic transmission. As he often says, “You are the experimenter, the experiment, and also its result.” Learn more about Daaji's practice here About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California.
