Rehmannia Dean Thomas discusses wellness through ancient healing systems and visions for the future of mankind and our planet. Host: Bonnie Burkert Rehmannia is a Taoist Tonic Herbalist in the Gate of Life lineage, a 5000 year old herbal system from China (est. 2975 BC). His experience with Chinese herbalism began in 1985 during a visit to herb farms in Northeastern China. After returning, he and his then Chinese wife made tonic herbal tinctures in their kitchen. In 1998, Rehmannia met Master Herbalist Ron Teeguarden and became his personal apprentice until 2006. In 2007, Rehmannia created his first business, Shaman Shack, where he formulated ground-breaking tonic elixir formulas. During this time, Rehmannia innovated new developments in the field of Chinese herbalism, including innovating the use of Shilajit and ORMUS as amplifying devices. In April 2021, Rehmannia resigned from Shamanshack to create his new RDT Connoisseurs line. Rehmannia is a U.C. Master Gardener, focusing on Permaculture. He studied Chinese medical diagnosis at Alhambra University and obtained a degree from Natural Healing College as “Master Herbalist”, but adheres to the title Master Teeguarden gave him as “Superior herbalist.” Rehmannia has written nine books including Raw Chi, Healing Thresholds, and The Hsien, and is near completion of an online course in Taoist health philosophy and Tonic herbalism in the Gate of Life lineage. On today's podcast, we've invited four hospice and palliative care social media influencers (yes, that's a thing!), all of whom focus their efforts on educating the general public about living and dying with a serious illness. Their work is pretty impressive in both reach (some of their posts are seen by millions of viewers) and breadth of work.  We've invited: Julie McFadden (aka Hospice Nurse Julie): Julie is a social media superstar, with 1.5 million subscribers on TikTok, another 400,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel, and another 350k followers on Instagram. She covers topics on death, dying, and hospice from a hospice nurse perspective, and she also has a book coming out called “Nothing to Fear: Demystifying Death to Live More Fully,” which is now available for pre-order.   Matt Tyler (aka Pallidad for those on Twitter): Matt is the Hospice and Palliative care doctor who created How To Train Your Doctor, which helps patients living with serious illness find tips on “owning” their healthcare plan on his Instagram and  YouTube pages.  He was also the one who we have to thank for suggesting this podcast! Hsien Seow & Samantha (“Sammy”) Winemaker: Hsein and Sammy's goal was to start a revolution with their podcast “The Waiting Room Revolution,” which is now in its 7th season! The hope was by going directly to those living with a life-changing illness, we could directly tackle the question that comes up so many times - “Why didn't anyone tell me that sooner…”  They also just published a book,” Hope for the Best, Plan for the Rest,” and Sammy is a TikTok star in her own right, with some posts having over a million views. We covered a lot of topics in the podcast from::  What motivated them to create public-facing social media channels? Why focus on the public rather than other health care providers? How do they deal with professional barriers and the barrage of comments? Advice for others who might want to dabble in social media outreach   So, take a listen and check out their social media sites to get inspired. Just don't let Alex make me do another TikTok dance…   Eric Widera

Today we're interviewing Adwin Koh Hsin Win, Head of Food Innovation and Technology at Pizza Hut in Malaysia! So a global company like pizza hut needs to adapt to local cultures and sometimes the franchise can take charge in developing local R+D flavors. Adwin is the man who gets that job done Adwin is a rockstar who's worked in Lays, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and even smaller companies building out their menus. He's super experienced and knowledgeable in his field. One of the industries I don't really have a good grasp on are Quick Serivce or QSR interviews. One, I personally love fast food, but two, it's definitively a different beast compared to a lot of the companies I work for. When we started looking into food service, I never realized how important the ease of use a product has to be for it to be part of a large QSR channel. I love QSR interviews, especially R+D ones and Adwin's reminds me of a personal favorite, Missy Schapook from Taco Bell. Fun fact, I actually went to the headquarters of Taco Bell thanks to Missy and she showed me everything from the kitchen where they innovate products, the sensory room where they put you into a booth for you to try new taco bell products, and the marketing room where they track each and every tweet and post for positive or negative vibes. Adwin brings more insight to the field and talks about how the Malaysia team works with Global. It's a really fun interview. As always, I ask Adwin about the cool things in Malaysia and he adds to the ever-growing list when I come back.

A Companion to The Story of the Stone: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide (Columbia UP, 2021), co-authored by Susan Chan Egan and Pai Hsien-yung (Columbia University Press, 2021), is a straightforward guide to the Chinese literary classic, The Story of the Stone (also known as Dream of the Red Chamber), that was written at a time when readers had plenty of leisure to sort through the hundreds of characters and half a dozen subplots that weave in and out of the book's 120 chapters. The Story of the Stone is widely held to be the greatest work of Chinese literature, beloved by readers ever since it was first published in 1791. The story revolves around the young scion of a mighty clan who, instead of studying for the civil service examinations, frolics with his maidservants and girl cousins. The narrative is cast within a mythic framework in which the protagonist's rebellion against Confucian strictures is guided by a Buddhist monk and a Taoist priest. Embedded in the novel is a biting critique of imperial China's political and social system. Each chapter of A Companion to The Story of the Stone: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide summarizes and comments on each chapter of the novel. The companion provides English-speaking readers—whether they are simply dipping into this novel or intent on a deep analysis of this masterpiece—with the cultural context to enjoy the story and understand its world. The book is keyed to David Hawkes and John Minford's English translation of The Story of the Stone and includes an index that gives the original Chinese names and terms. Susan Chan Egan is an independent scholar. She is the author of A Latterday Confucian: Reminiscences of William Hung (1893–1980) (1987), coauthor of A Pragmatist and His Free Spirit: The Half-Century Romance of Hu Shi and Edith Clifford Williams (2009), and cotranslator of Wang Anyi's The Song of Everlasting Sorrow: A Novel of Shanghai (Columbia, 2008), among other books. Pai Hsien-yung (Bai Xianyong) is an acclaimed fiction writer and a professor emeritus of East Asian languages and cultural studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His books include Taipei People (1971) and Crystal Boys (1983). He has taught The Story of the Stone for decades and is the author of a popular three-volume guide in Chinese on which this book is based. Linshan Jiang is Ph.D. candidate in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests are modern and contemporary literature, film, and popular culture in mainland China, Taiwan and Japan; trauma and memory studies; gender and sexuality studies; queer studies; as well as comparative literature and translation studies.
