What is lucid surrender? Can dreams facilitate psycho-spiritual transformation? Can we be in contact with those who have died and what does this suggest about the afterlife? We speak today with Melinda Powell from the Dream Research Institute in London. Melinda starts by talking about how she has been a lucid dreamer since a child, and she shares a powerful snake dream and how working with that dream in waking life was transformational. We talk about lucid surrender, both dreaming and awake, and how dreams are a kind of angel that is out ahead of us. After the break, we take a question from Max and talk about how our dreams are showing us how to live. We end with a conversation about the luminous void. BIO: Melinda Powell is co-founder of the Dream Research Institute, London, and past Vice-President of the International Association of Dreams. She has authored three books: The Hidden Lives of Dreams, Lucid Surrender: The Alchemy of the Soul in Lucid Dreaming, and her latest: Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Lucid Dreaming from Beyond the Grave, which will be available from June 30th, 2025. Find our guest at: MelindaPowellDreams.com, driccpe.org.uk, ccpe.org.uk, and on IG @melindapowelldreams, @dreamresearchinstitute, and @thedreamboatpodcast Melinda co-founded the Dream Research Institute, London, in 2012 with Dr. Nigel Hamilton, and directed the DRI for seven years. Located in London's Little Venice behind Paddington Station, the DRI is housed in the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education (CCPE) which offers a 5-year accredited training in psychotherapy from a spiritual perspective and a master's degree in Transpersonal Psychotherapy. Nine Hidden Lives by Robert Gold Secrets only survive in the dark When journalist Ben Harper is asked to help re-examine an unsolved murder case from thirty years ago, he immediately agrees. It's not just that the victim was also a journalist, murdered after she'd published a series of shocking interviews with victims of domestic abuse. It's also that he understands all too well the need of victim's daughter, Doctor Uma Jha, for answers. But it's not long before their investigation leads to threats being made on Uma's life. Ben needs to unravel this crime before it's too late, but instead he finds himself tangled in a web of lies and deception. After all, a crime like murder has implications for many people. People who have been keeping secrets for thirty years, and will do whatever it takes to protect them. Strangers in Time by David Baldacci Fourteen-year-old Charlie Matters is up to no good, but for a very good reason. Without parents, peerage, or merit, he steals what he needs, living day-to-day until he's old enough to enlist to fight the Germans. After barely surviving the Blitz, Charlie knows there's no telling when a falling bomb might end his life. Fifteen-year-old Molly Wakefield has just returned to a nearly unrecognizable London. One of millions of children to have been evacuated to the countryside Molly has been away from her home for nearly five years. Her return, however, is not the homecoming she'd hoped for as she's confronted by a devastating reality: neither of her parents are there. Without guardians and stability, Charlie and Molly find an unexpected ally and protector in Ignatius Oliver, and solace at his bookshop, The Book Keep. Mourning the recent loss of his wife, Ignatius forms a kinship with both children, and in each other they rediscover the spirit of family each has lost. But Charlie's escapades in the city have not gone unnoticed, and someone's been following Molly since she returned to London. And Ignatius is harboring his own secrets, which could have terrible consequences for all of them. As bombs continue to bear down on the city, Charlie, Molly, and Ignatius learn that while the perils of war rage on, their coming together and trusting one another may be the only way for them to survive. Alan, an ant enthusiast since childhood, is joined by Susanne Foitzik, author of Empire of Ants: The Hidden Worlds and Extraordinary Lives of Earth's Tiny Conquerors. She explains that while queens start colonies and lay eggs, they don't control the colony. Worker ants take on specialized roles like brood care and foraging, with older ants handling riskier tasks. Ants communicate through pheromones and use impressive navigation skills. Some species, like the Argentine and fire ants, thrive in new environments due to human transport, forming super colonies. Susanne's current research focuses on how ants regulate labor division and how parasites impact their behavior and longevity. Guest Bio Dr. Susanne Foitzik is a professor of evolutionary biology, Vice Dean of the biology faculty, and Acting Director of the Institute of Organismic and Molecular Evolutionary Biology at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. She has held academic positions at Ludwig Maximilian University, the University of Regensburg, and as a postdoctoral fellow at Colorado State University. With a doctoral degree in biology and a habilitation in zoology, Susanne is widely published and the author of Empire of Ants: The Hidden Worlds and Extraordinary Lives of Earth's Tiny Conquerors, a captivating exploration of ant behavior and ecology. In the idyllic seaside town of Cayucos, on the Californian coast, property is expensive, a home here can easily cost a million dollars or more. The property boom which has made people of Carolyn's generation well off, has priced so many out of the market and made it expensive to rent. There is a growing problem with homelessness, a world that Dave knows well. Even now that he is living with Carolyn he has not cut his ties with the homeless and is determined to help when he can. When Dave returns to Riverside, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, he visits some of the friends he lived alongside on the river bottom. There are tarpaulin covers stretching for miles, largely hidden by the trees and it is down there that we meet Rebecca. She is a crystal meth addict and offers him the pipe: he has made so much of leaving this world behind, but has he really? In that same visit he goes back to the Gavilan mountains, a spaghetti Western landscape that is sun scorched and inhospitable. Beyond lucidity: For experienced lucid dreamers, at least some of them, the ability to live out endless fantasies gets tired pretty quickly, and they start to use their lucid dreams to explore the nature of their minds, their dreams, consciousness, and existence itself. In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to someone who has done exactly that, and written about it, and who teaches people who want to do the same: Melinda Powell. They talk about how dreams have shaped and influenced Melinda's life and work, and the powerful messages she has received in dreams, including the directive to teach and write about what she has learned from paying attention to her inner world. Melinda is one of the Co-Founders of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies; she is a psychotherapist and teacher of dreamwork and the art of lucid dreaming, and is the author of two books about dreams, “The Hidden Lives of Dreams: What they can tell us and how they can change our World”, and “Lucid Surrender: the alchemy of the soul in lucid dreaming”. She has published and lectured widely about dreams and lucidity, and she is writing a new book called: "Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Love, Light and Lucid Dreaming From Beyond the Grave." Which stories are left out of the history books? What's in the documents omitted from the “official” record? And what happens when we go in search of people's hidden lives? Today's book is No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves (Zest Books, 2021), by Lee Wind, in which he reminds us that “history” was crafted by the people who recorded it. And sometimes, those historians were biased against, didn't see, or couldn't even imagine anyone different from themselves. That means that history has often left out the stories of LGBTQIA+ people: men who loved men, women who loved women, people who loved without regard to gender, and people who lived outside gender boundaries. Historians have even censored the lives and loves of some of the world's most famous people, from William Shakespeare and Pharaoh Hatshepsut to Cary Grant and Eleanor Roosevelt. Throughout the text, Lee Wind shares primary sources—poetry, memoir, news clippings, and images of ancient artwork—and explores the hidden (and often surprising) Queer lives and loves of two dozen historical figures. No Way, They Were Gay was honored as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, and was selected for the Chicago Public Library's 2021 Best of the Best Books list. Our guest is: Lee Wind, who writes stories that center marginalized kids and teens and celebrate their power to change the world. Closeted until his 20s, Lee writes the books that would have changed his life as a young Gay kid. His Masters Degree from Harvard didn't include blueprints for a time machine to go back and tell these stories to himself, so Lee pays it forward with a popular blog with over 3 million page views (I'm Here. I'm Queer. What The Hell Do I Read?) and books for kids and teens. He is the author of No Way, They Were Gay? Which stories are left out of the history books? His day-job is for the Independent Book Publishers Association (as their Chief Content Officer), and for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (as their official blogger). Middle school might not feel like a very enchanting time in our lives — it definitely didn't feel that way for me when I was living through it. But according to my guest Chris Balme, middle school is a time of great magic and opportunity for our kids, and for us as parents, if we know what we're looking for. In our conversation, Chris explains the three stages of identity development a child goes through in middle school, how we as parents will want to adapt our parenting styles change as our kids reach these stages, and how to navigate our child breaking our trust. We also talked about what individuation is and what it means to become a better companion for our kids, which is a reframe I really love.Chris Balme is an education leader and writer, passionate about helping young people discover more of their human potential. Bad Bridget is the new book from historians Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick. It tells the unheard stories of Irish girls and women who emigrated to North America in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The book which follows the successful podcast series of the same name, is a culmination of over five years worth of research into the lives of these women who travelled across the Atlantic and didn't quite find the American dream. The pair's extensive research into police, court and prison records uncovers the types of criminal activity in which Irish women were involved, including drunkenness, sex work and murder. In this episode, Farrell and McCormick speak to Róisín Ingle about the Bad Bridget podcast series and the Irish women that history chose to forget. This episode was originally published in February 2021. The Bad Bridget book is out now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today we have the pleasure of speaking with the incredible author of the incredible book "No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves" Lee Wind. Lee Wind's superpower is stories that center marginalized kids and teens and celebrate their power to change the world. He is an Award-winning blogger and Lee's middle grade nonfiction “No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves” was honored as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection and was selected for the Chicago Public Library's 2021 Best of the Best Books list. We discuss the noble reason he wrote "No Way They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves" along with "Red and Green and Blue and White". Lee Wind shares incredible stories about the hidden queer lives and loves of historical figures. He gives us some insight into why people have attempted to erase their stories. He also shares what historical figure speaks to the core of his inspiration. We end our interview with a fun game of "Would You Rather". Closeted until his 20s, Award-winning blogger and author Lee Wind writes books today that would have dramatically changed his life as a young Gay boy. With his Master's Degree from Harvard, Lee commits to writing Cool Stuff For Queer Kids. His book "No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves" explores the hidden (and often surprising) Queer lives and loves of two dozen historical figures, including William Shakespeare, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. "I give young people access to a hidden history that can be life-changing. History has been sanitized for the protection of those in power, leaving out the stories of women, people of colour, indigenous people, disabled people, and – my focus – men who loved men, women who loved women, people who loved without regard to gender, and people who lived outside gender boundaries." Giving young people access to this hidden history is life-changing. Seeing people like you in the past changes how you see your place at the table now. And that changes what you can imagine for the future."

Friendly or Deadly? A View Into the Hidden Lives of Fungi Fungi are all bad, right? Well…not exactly. You might be surprised by how much you benefit from fungi in your everyday life. Learn what those mushrooms in the woods, or even on your pizza, are doing in nature and what those splotches of color you see on trees and rock are. By providing a window into the hidden lives of these fascinating and important organisms, we will highlight how fungi can be both friendly and deadly. Lee Wind's superpower is stories – true and fictional – that center marginalized kids and teens and celebrate their power to change the world. Closeted until his 20s, Lee writes the books that would have changed his life as a young Gay kid. His Master's Degree from Harvard didn't include blueprints for a time machine to go back and tell these stories to himself, so Lee pays it forward with a popular blog with over 3 million page views (I'm Here. I'm Queer. What The Hell Do I Read?) and books for kids and teens. His latest book for readers age 11 and up is the nonfiction “No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves”, honored as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, and named to the Chicago Public Library Best of the Best Books of 2021 list. With day jobs for the Independent Book Publishers Association (as their director of education and programs) and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (as their official blogger), Lee's superhero job is storytelling to empower readers to shine with their own light.--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mohanni-love/message

Each day in October, a new LGBT Icon is featured with a video, bio, bibliography, downloadable images, and other resources. LGBT History Is History “LGBT History Month sends an important message to our nation's teachers, school boards, community leaders, and youth about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in American history." Background In 1994, Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and lesbian history, and gathered other teachers and community leaders. They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur that month. Celebrate Our Heritage The LGBT community is the only community worldwide that is not taught its history at home, in public schools, or in religious institutions. LGBT History Month provides role models, builds community, and makes the civil rights statement about our extraordinary national and international contributions. https://lgbthistorymonth.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/queervoicez/support

We're talking about Books That Make You Rethink the Private Lives of Historical Figures Gay people have done extraordinary things across history, in science, art, sports, literature, social justice, military conquest and more. Very often, though, the nature of their orientation was not included in history books, or revealed or discussed at all. Oftentimes, those writing history were biased against, didn't see, or couldn't imagine anyone leading lives different from themselves. Lee Wind is the author of “No Way, They Were Gay?: Hidden Lives and Secret Loves.” which launches readers on an edifying journey through primary sources—poetry, memoir, news clippings, and images of ancient artwork—to explore the hidden Queer lives and loves of two dozen historical figures. He is also the author of the crowd-funded YA novel “Queer as a Five-Dollar Bill,” featured as a Publishers Weekly Indie Success Story. In October 2021, he will also publish his upcoming picture book “Red and Green and Blue and White”. During the day, he works for the Independent Book Publishers Association as their director of marketing and programming, and as the main blogger for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. Author Lee Wind talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his new book “No Way, They Were Gay?: Hidden Lives and Secret Loves” a Queer History Project published by Zest/Lerner. In “No Way, They Were Gay?” Wind takes the reader on a fascinating journey through primary sources of poetry, memoir, news clippings and images of ancient artwork to explore the hidden and often surprising Queer lives and loves of two dozen historical figures. History has often left out so many stories of our LGBTQ community and people who lived outside gender boundaries. Historians have even censored the lives and loves of some of the world's most famous people from William Shakespeare and Pharaoh Hatshepsut to Cary Grant and Eleanor Roosevelt. Wind skillfully revisits famous figures in the USA and world history by delving into primary sources and reassesses what's made legible about people's sexual and gender identities when the present and past are allowed to collide. The book is divided into three categories: men who loved men, women who loved women and people who lived outside of gender binaries. Wind not only delivers a long overdue education for everyone that reads this book but also helps our LGBTQ youth by providing role models that are among the most revered of leaders. We talked to Lee about what he hopes to accomplish with “No Way, They Were Gay?: Hidden Lives and Secret Loves” and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. Lee Wind is the founding blogger and publisher of “I’m Here. I’m Queer. What The Hell Do I Read?” an award-winning website about books, culture and empowerment for LGBTQ youth and their allies. For over 11 years readers from 100-plus countries have racked up 2.6 million page views and counting. Lee’s debut novel “Queer as a Five-Dollar Bill” addressing the theory about Abraham Lincoln's close relationship with Joshua Fry Speed a Springfield, Illinois merchant who met Lincoln in 1837 one of Publishers Weekly’s top five independently published middle grade and young adult books of 2018. Currently Wind is Director of Marketing and Programming at the Independent Book Publishers Association and the official blogger for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Lee’s passion is writing stories to empower LGBTQ youth and their allies. This episode is based on the talk that I gave at the 2020 European Association for Social Anthropologists. I was delighted to take part in the first virtual 2020 EASA panel on Ethnography beyond the looking glass. I presented the work that I have been doing as part of the Nightworkshop project designed to research nightwork communities in urban spaces. In this talk I focus on the use of the body in research and the use of cyberethnographic methods to capture the sensorial experiences of a researcher immersed in night ethnography. The audio-visual methods that I have used to bring this information to the mixed audiences includes short ethnographic films and this podcast series, the Nightworkpod. The three short films, Invisible Lives, Nocturnal Lives and Nightshift Spitalfields are available to watch on Vimeo and Youtube or go to Nightworkshop. This work is based on a book chapter due for OPEN ACCESS publication in May 2021. You can read the abstract here.

Mike and Ryan begin a new series: "Keeping Your Church on Track." In this series they are first talking about factors that can "derail" a church or take them off-track from their primary calling. Today's first topic is life stage. The life stage of your congregation impacts how you engage in ministry. At every stage in the life cycle the church responds differently to change, leadership development, new ministry, discipleship, and community engagement. Understanding your life stage helps your church to navigate it better. The resource Ryan references in the episode is The Hidden Lives of Congregations by Israel Galindo.

Hidden Lives - Colossians 3:1-11 - from Sunday, August 4, 2019
Are high heels oppressive or powerful? Good or bad? Beauty or pain? What if the answer to all of those questions is...yes? We talk with Summer Brennan about her new book, High Heel, which explores how heels aren’t just about fashion or culture, but are really about women’s place in public life. Summer is a journalist who writes about gender, art, and the political history of fashion. Her new book, High Heel, is part of a Bloomsbury series called “Object Lessons: Exploring the Hidden Lives of Ordinary Things.” What does it mean if the most feminine shoe is the shoe that makes it difficult to get from one place to another? In the literal sense, does that say something about our metaphorical ability to get from one position to another position? We chat about: Summer’s new book. High Heel is out now! Why high heels are such a divisive topic, and how Summer deals with negative feedback High heels and class: how what women are expected to wear ties directly to perceptions about where they stand economically Her own relationship with high heels—and ours (it’s complicated) Writing about oyster farms and environmental policy, high heels and feminism, and a thousand things in between—all at the same time Links: Twitter Summer’s website Information on all of Summer’s books “Sex, power, oppression: why women wear high heels” in The Guardian Bloomsbury’s Object Lessons series Plus Sara shares why liking things thought of as girly ended up feeling like a rebellion to her—and how that resulted in sneaking clear mascara as a kid. Katel reveals that a love of clogs runs in her family, and why she blames high heels for once fainting on the NYC subway. We recommend Bossed Up, a podcast that keeps it real about the challenges women face at work. And a big fuck yeah to...Cantrip Coffee, a new roaster in Philly whose co-owner is Robyn from Blowdryer—the band behind our theme song!
1. Most substances make a clean break between their liquid and solid states. But liquid crystals straddle the boundary: They flow smoothly, like water, while maintaining a crystalline structure. A tiny jolt of electricity aligns the molecules in the same direction and allows them to rotate light—an effect you see when the pixels in your LCD television or smartphone flip on and off to form pretty images. 2.
Graham Nuthall was an education researcher from New Zealand who spent most of his career on classroom observation, both by directly sitting in on lessons and by recording them by the hundred, watching them back, and analysing them with his team. He also made extensive use of interviews with students to clarify their thought processes. This short book communicates his most important findings to other researchers and to teachers. His most impressive achievement is being able to predict, with some accuracy, what concepts or facts children have learned based solely on classroom observation. His team would analyse what different students were doing at key moments in lessons, noting whether they were paying attention to the information being taught or discussed. They found that if a student had been paying attention at least three times when the full information necessary to understand a concept was being stated, then they would almost always have formed the concept and be able to articulate it after the end of the unit. If they had paid attention only two or fewer times, they had not learnt the concept. His work emphasises the individual lives of students, and particularly peer interactions. It's not only "distraction" either - for some students, over half of what they learned had been from peers. He goes over detailed examples of classroom conversations, both the public and the clandestine, showing how these affect both student learning and broader behaviour and culture. Although the main points of the book concern peers and the number of exposures required to learn something, given that the book is a summary of the most important things that Nuthall has to say, it touches on many other points and ideas in education. Although I was hoping to make this a short episode, as per my Public Service Announcement (last "episode"), it ended up having to be around 50 minutes long to cover the most important things that he had to say, even briefly. Maybe 50 minutes is still short for me. Enjoy the episode.

The Agewyz Podcast is on a summer break and will be back with all new episodes starting September 14th. Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy this popular rebroadcast: We often think of caregiving as something only adults do, but in the US there are at least 1.3 million youth caregivers (ages 8 to 18), many of them forced to drop out of school to provide care to a family member. That's what happened when a surgical error left Feylyn Lewis' mother in need of 24/7 care. Feylyn was just eleven years old at the time and her parents were divorced, so her 18-year old brother left college to care for their mother and even took a job to pay the mortgage. In today's show, Feylyn talks about her brother's sacrifice on behalf of their family and what it was like to grow up with a mom who needed constant care. Currently in England completing a PhD focused on identity development in young adult caregivers between the ages of 18 and 25, Feylyn also shares some of her research results and tells us how support for youth caregivers in the UK differs from support in the US. Tune in for a spirited conversation with a researcher on a mission. Tom Hall, the author of Footwork: Urban Outreach and Hidden Lives, reads an extract from his book. Footwork is a street-corner ethnography of the homeless living in Cardiff in Wales, drawing on the themes of urban regeneration, lost space and the 24-hour city. It’s an insightful and at times very funny portrait of hidden lives, an ‘erudite book about city life that exudes a deep but irreverent sense of humanity.’
"I can’t trust my own mind, or my memory, so I’m writing all of this down… There’s been a murder in this town and I’m determined to get to the bottom of it." Aaron Grayling hates summer. It’s a time of heat and humidity in the dreary town of Meriville. It’s also the time when the bad dreams come, which have been intensifying since the death of his father. He hardly seems to find the space to breathe… Until the fateful day he finds a diary in the woods. Penned by the mysterious X, it hints at a shadowy world of murder that seems too true for the boy to ignore. Torn between school and a murder investigation, Aaron finds himself an unlikely companion in X. Can they stop the crimewave from hitting Meriville before it's too late? And will it help Aaron understand the turbulent goings-on in his head? Hidden Lives is a powerful novel of friendship and loss, and staying true to who you are against the odds. Feylyn Lewis is a millennial from Nashville, Tennessee who's doing her PhD thesis on identity development in young adult caregivers in the US and UK. She has firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by this often overlooked group: when she was eleven years old, complications from a surgery left her mother—a former nurse—with a physical disability and Feylyn's brother left college to become mom's full-time caregiver. In today's episode Feylyn talks about what it was like growing up with a mother who needed 24/7 care, her brother's incredible sacrifice on behalf of their family and how young adult caregivers can be supported through the transition into adulthood. With the news about Carlton and Gina Pearson's divorce and Josh Duggar's secret affairs, is it time for Christian leaders to be more transparent and if so, how should they go about doing it? I've always wondered why lay persons are more tolerant of someone's fall from grace after it happens instead of allowing leaders to show their own fallibilities How transparent should Christian leaders be to those they serve?
