This Sunday, Pete, one of our small group leaders and a member of the preaching team, brings the final message in our Hidden Lives series. Naomi returned home empty, carrying nothing but loss. Yet that “failure” became the doorway to blessing, legacy, and even Jesus Himself. What if your lowest moment isn't the last word?

In this talk, Julian Arnold explores the challenge of living with conviction when faced with pressure, compromise, or fear. From a personal story inside the Pentagon to the biblical account of the Hebrew midwives in Exodus, Julian shows how small acts of courage can shape history — and how the choices we make today define who we become tomorrow. He reminds us that true courage isn't the absence of fear, but the presence of reverence: choosing integrity and faith over compliance and compromise. Drawing parallels between ancient stories, modern challenges, and everyday decisions, Julian invites us to ask: Who do I want to be before the moment arrives? This is an inspiring call to live with faith, integrity, and courage, even when the world tells us otherwise.

Send us a textIn a time when stories are under siege, especially those that center queer characters and themes, we're seeing a rise in book bans and legislative efforts aimed at erasing LGBTQ+ experiences from classrooms and libraries. Just last month, The U.S. Supreme Court handed a victory to Montgomery County parents who object, for religious reasons, to the school system's use of LGBTQ+ themed books in classrooms, saying parents should be allowed to opt their children out of such classes. Today In the Den, Sara is joined by Lee Wind, advocate, educator, and author whose work helps fill the shelves with stories LGBTQ+ youth so deeply need. Special Guest: Lee WindLee Wind's superpower is stories – true and fictional – that center marginalized kids and teens and celebrate their power to change the world. Closeted until his 20s, Lee writes the books that would have changed his life as a young gay kid. His Masters Degree from Harvard didn't include blueprints for a time machine to go back and tell these stories to himself, so Lee pays it forward with a popular blog with over 3 million page views (I'm Here. I'm Queer. What The Hell Do I Read?) and books for kids and teens. His latest book is Red and Green and Blue and White, a picture book illustrated by Caldecott-winning illustrator Paul O. Zelinsky (Levine Querido.) It has received five starred trade reviews and the New York Times called it “beautiful.” Lee's middle grade nonfiction No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves (Lerner Publishing Group/Zest Books), was honored as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection and was selected for the Chicago Public Library's 2021 Best of the Best Books list. He is also the author of the crowd-funded YA novel Queer as a Five-Dollar Bill, featured as a Publishers Weekly Indie Success Story, and one of Publishers Weekly's Top Five Independently Published Middle Grade and Young Adult Books of 2018. With day jobs for the Independent Book Publishers Association (as their director of education and programs) and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (as their official blogger), Lee's superhero job is storytelling to empower readers to shine with their own light. Links from the Show: Lee's website: https://www.leewind.org/ Lee's books: https://bookshop.org/beta-search?keywords=lee+wind  Subscribe to Lee's newsletter here: https://mailchi.mp/fc7b55fc0636/leewindsignup Join Mama Dragons today: www.mamadragons.org In the Den is made possible by generous donors like you. Explaining History (explaininghistory) (explaininghistory)

Join us on The Explaining History Podcast as we welcome Dame Vikki Heywood, former Executive Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court Theatre, to discuss her dazzling debut novel Miss Veal and Miss Ham. Set against the sleepy veneer of a 1951 Buckinghamshire village post office, this intimate tale reveals the hidden passions and unspoken resilience of two women whose lives span from the suffragette movement to the aftermath of World War II.In this episode, we explore:A Day of Reckoning: How one pivotal day in 1951 cracks open Miss Dora Ham and Miss Beatrix Veal's carefully maintained spinster façade—and what it tells us about post-war Britain.Through Beatrix's Eyes: The wry, poignant narrative voice that illuminates the challenges of love that “cannot be spoken,” and the heart-breaking decisions forced by changing times.Echoes of Literary Greats: Why fans of Barbara Pym and Sarah Waters will be drawn to Heywood's rich tapestry of gay underground clubs, wartime Blitz life, and the shifting landscape of women's work after the war.Hidden Lives, Lasting Love: What inspired Heywood to tell a four-decade story of clandestine romance, and how her own career in the arts informed this deeply human portrait.Whether you're intrigued by post-war social history, the evolution of LGBTQ+ narratives, or the behind-the-scenes world of theatre leadership, this conversation shines a light on love, loss, and the unbreakable dignity of lives lived in the shadows. Tune in for an episode that bridges art, history, and the enduring power of storytelling.*****STOP PRESS*****I only ever talk about history on this podcast but I also have another life, yes, that of aspirant fantasy author and if that's your thing you can get a copy of my debut novel The Blood of Tharta, right here:Help the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon hereOr you can just say some nice things about it here Hosted on Acast. Death and Lucid Surrender with Melinda Powell

What is lucid surrender? Can dreams facilitate psycho-spiritual transformation? Can we be in contact with those who have died and what does this suggest about the afterlife? We speak today with Melinda Powell from the Dream Research Institute in London. Melinda starts by talking about how she has been a lucid dreamer since a child, and she shares a powerful snake dream and how working with that dream in waking life was transformational. We talk about lucid surrender, both dreaming and awake, and how dreams are a kind of angel that is out ahead of us. After the break, we take a question from Max and talk about how our dreams are showing us how to live. We end with a conversation about the luminous void. BIO: Melinda Powell is co-founder of the Dream Research Institute, London, and past Vice-President of the International Association of Dreams. She has authored three books: The Hidden Lives of Dreams, Lucid Surrender: The Alchemy of the Soul in Lucid Dreaming, and her latest: Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Lucid Dreaming from Beyond the Grave, which will be available from June 30th, 2025. Located in London's Little Venice behind Paddington Station, the DRI is housed in the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education (CCPE) which offers a 5-year accredited training in psychotherapy from a spiritual perspective and a master's degree in Transpersonal Psychotherapy. Nine Hidden Lives by Robert Gold Secrets only survive in the dark When journalist Ben Harper is asked to help re-examine an unsolved murder case from thirty years ago, he immediately agrees. It's not just that the victim was also a journalist, murdered after she'd published a series of shocking interviews with victims of domestic abuse. It's also that he understands all too well the need of victim's daughter, Doctor Uma Jha, for answers. But it's not long before their investigation leads to threats being made on Uma's life. Ben needs to unravel this crime before it's too late, but instead he finds himself tangled in a web of lies and deception. After all, a crime like murder has implications for many people. People who have been keeping secrets for thirty years, and will do whatever it takes to protect them. Strangers in Time by David Baldacci Fourteen-year-old Charlie Matters is up to no good, but for a very good reason. Without parents, peerage, or merit, he steals what he needs, living day-to-day until he's old enough to enlist to fight the Germans. After barely surviving the Blitz, Charlie knows there's no telling when a falling bomb might end his life. Fifteen-year-old Molly Wakefield has just returned to a nearly unrecognizable London. One of millions of children to have been evacuated to the countryside Molly has been away from her home for nearly five years. Her return, however, is not the homecoming she'd hoped for as she's confronted by a devastating reality: neither of her parents are there. Without guardians and stability, Charlie and Molly find an unexpected ally and protector in Ignatius Oliver, and solace at his bookshop, The Book Keep. Mourning the recent loss of his wife, Ignatius forms a kinship with both children, and in each other they rediscover the spirit of family each has lost. But Charlie's escapades in the city have not gone unnoticed, and someone's been following Molly since she returned to London. And Ignatius is harboring his own secrets, which could have terrible consequences for all of them. As bombs continue to bear down on the city, Charlie, Molly, and Ignatius learn that while the perils of war rage on, their coming together and trusting one another may be the only way for them to survive. Alan, an ant enthusiast since childhood, is joined by Susanne Foitzik, author of Empire of Ants: The Hidden Worlds and Extraordinary Lives of Earth's Tiny Conquerors. She explains that while queens start colonies and lay eggs, they don't control the colony. Worker ants take on specialized roles like brood care and foraging, with older ants handling riskier tasks. Ants communicate through pheromones and use impressive navigation skills. Some species, like the Argentine and fire ants, thrive in new environments due to human transport, forming super colonies. Susanne's current research focuses on how ants regulate labor division and how parasites impact their behavior and longevity.     Guest Bio Dr. Susanne Foitzik is a professor of evolutionary biology, Vice Dean of the biology faculty, and Acting Director of the Institute of Organismic and Molecular Evolutionary Biology at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. She has held academic positions at Ludwig Maximilian University, the University of Regensburg, and as a postdoctoral fellow at Colorado State University. With a doctoral degree in biology and a habilitation in zoology, Susanne is widely published and the author of Empire of Ants: The Hidden Worlds and Extraordinary Lives of Earth's Tiny Conquerors, a captivating exploration of ant behavior and ecology.       Show Notes (2:12) How many species of ants there are (3:46) The role of ant queens and how they're made (5:55) The different functions ants take on in the colony (9:01) How nests are created (11:02) How ants communicate and navigate (16:01) How certain ants have developed the ability to maintain livestock and how they do it (19:01) Ants' more aggressive behaviors (22:34) What turns ants into “zombies” (25:34) The social immune system of ants (28:42) Invasive species of ants (32:39) Understanding ant-tink (34:31) What Susanne is working on now     Links Referenced Empire of Ants: The Hidden Worlds and Extraordinary Lives of Earth's Tiny Conquerors: https://www.amazon.com/Superpowers-Six-Legs-Hidden-Lives/dp/1615197125

In the idyllic seaside town of Cayucos, on the Californian coast, property is expensive, a home here can easily cost a million dollars or more. The property boom which has made people of Carolyn's generation well off, has priced so many out of the market and made it expensive to rent. There is a growing problem with homelessness, a world that Dave knows well. Even now that he is living with Carolyn he has not cut his ties with the homeless and is determined to help when he can. When Dave returns to Riverside, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, he visits some of the friends he lived alongside on the river bottom. There are tarpaulin covers stretching for miles, largely hidden by the trees and it is down there that we meet Rebecca. She is a crystal meth addict and offers him the pipe: he has made so much of leaving this world behind, but has he really? In that same visit he goes back to the Gavilan mountains, a spaghetti Western landscape that is sun scorched and inhospitable. It was here that Dave lived with a famous Hollywood actress. A story which hardly seems true but which is and one which quickly raises new worries about Carolyn's safety at his hands. The relationship between Dave and Carolyn captured the attention of the BBC Journalist Sue Mitchell, an investigative journalist who reports on the lives of people like Dave who inhabit the dangerous margins of society.New episodes will be released on Thursday, wherever you get your podcasts. Beyond lucidity:  For experienced lucid dreamers, at least some of them, the ability to live out endless fantasies gets tired pretty quickly, and they start to use their lucid dreams to explore the nature of their minds, their dreams, consciousness, and existence itself.  In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to someone who has done exactly that, and written about it, and who teaches people who want to do the same: Melinda Powell. They talk about how dreams have shaped and influenced Melinda's life and work, and the powerful messages she has received in dreams, including the directive to teach and write about what she has learned from paying attention to her inner world. Melinda is one of the Co-Founders of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies; she is a psychotherapist and teacher of dreamwork and the art of lucid dreaming, and is the author of two books about dreams, “The Hidden Lives of Dreams: What they can tell us and how they can change our World”, and “Lucid Surrender: the alchemy of the soul in lucid dreaming”. She has published and lectured widely about dreams and lucidity, and she is writing a new book called: "Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Love, Light and Lucid Dreaming From Beyond the Grave."  In this episode:   Ways to find out about and contact Melinda: Melinda has a gorgeous and informative website at melindapowelldreams.com Instagram: @melindapowelldreams And see her courses, writing, interview and other contributions at driccpe.org.uk!   Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast!  Instagram @thedreamboatpodcast FaceBook @dreamboatpodcast Twitter @dreamboatpod DRI website: driccpe.org.uk/contact  This podcast is a project of the DRI, the centre for dream studies at CCPE, the psychotherapy college overlooking the canals at London's scenic Little Venice. Which stories are left out of the history books? What's in the documents omitted from the “official” record? And what happens when we go in search of people's hidden lives? Today's book is  No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves (Zest Books, 2021), by Lee Wind, in which he reminds us that “history” was crafted by the people who recorded it. And sometimes, those historians were biased against, didn't see, or couldn't even imagine anyone different from themselves. That means that history has often left out the stories of LGBTQIA+ people: men who loved men, women who loved women, people who loved without regard to gender, and people who lived outside gender boundaries. Historians have even censored the lives and loves of some of the world's most famous people, from William Shakespeare and Pharaoh Hatshepsut to Cary Grant and Eleanor Roosevelt. Throughout the text, Lee Wind shares primary sources—poetry, memoir, news clippings, and images of ancient artwork—and explores the hidden (and often surprising) Queer lives and loves of two dozen historical figures. No Way, They Were Gay was honored as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, and was selected for the Chicago Public Library's 2021 Best of the Best Books list. Our guest is: Lee Wind, who writes stories that center marginalized kids and teens and celebrate their power to change the world. He is the author of No Way, They Were Gay? His day-job is for the Independent Book Publishers Association (as their Chief Content Officer), and for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (as their official blogger). Middle school might not feel like a very enchanting time in our lives — it definitely didn't feel that way for me when I was living through it. But according to my guest Chris Balme, middle school is a time of great magic and opportunity for our kids, and for us as parents, if we know what we're looking for. In our conversation, Chris explains the three stages of identity development a child goes through in middle school, how we as parents will want to adapt our parenting styles change as our kids reach these stages, and how to navigate our child breaking our trust. Bad Bridget is the new book from historians Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick. It tells the unheard stories of Irish girls and women who emigrated to North America in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The book which follows the successful podcast series of the same name, is a culmination of over five years worth of research into the lives of these women who travelled across the Atlantic and didn't quite find the American dream. The pair's extensive research into police, court and prison records uncovers the types of criminal activity in which Irish women were involved, including drunkenness, sex work and murder. In this episode, Farrell and McCormick speak to Róisín Ingle about the Bad Bridget podcast series and the Irish women that history chose to forget. This episode was originally published in February 2021. The Bad Bridget book is out now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Closeted until his 20s, Award-winning blogger and author Lee Wind writes books today that would have dramatically changed his life as a young Gay boy. With his Master's Degree from Harvard, Lee commits to writing Cool Stuff For Queer Kids. His book "No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves" explores the hidden (and often surprising) Queer lives and loves of two dozen historical figures, including William Shakespeare, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. "I give young people access to a hidden history that can be life-changing. History has been sanitized for the protection of those in power, leaving out the stories of women, people of colour, indigenous people, disabled people, and – my focus – men who loved men, women who loved women, people who loved without regard to gender, and people who lived outside gender boundaries." Giving young people access to this hidden history is life-changing. Seeing people like you in the past changes how you see your place at the table now. And that changes what you can imagine for the future."
