POPULARITY
I wanted to try to do a hopeful episode. The world look pretty grim right now, and many of us feel discouraged. The unlawful and authoritarian actions of the Trump administration keep coming at a relentless pace, and it can be difficult to see any reasons for optimism. It can also be lonely. Someone mentioned to me recently that, in times as dark as these, we need friends, but we also need comrades. We need people who share a common purpose in defending liberalism and who are working, alongside us, to fight back against those who threaten it.Which is why I'm so happy today to welcome my friend—and, in the sense above, comrade—Carolyn Fiddler to the show. She's Director of Communications at the Democratic Attorneys General Association, and an expert in state politics. We talk about what attorneys general are doing to challenge the worst of Trump's policies, and how they've already found some success. And we look ahead to future challenges and the tactics the legal system offers to protect liberal institutions from the forces of the populist right.Discuss this episode with the host and your fellow listeners in the ReImagining Liberty Reddit community: https://www.reddit.com/r/ReImaginingLiberty/ If you enjoy ReImagining Liberty and want to listen to episodes free of ads and sponsorships, become a supporter. Virginia isn't the only state with key races on the ballot, but it's the one everyone is watching. How Virginia goes today, goes the nation next year! Or does it? Join us as we discuss Tuesday's elections with Virginia elections expert Carolyn Fiddler, and we examine our chances of prevailing, as well as what the results (good or bad) mean for the country.
On this week's The Brief we replay our episode with Matt Hildreth, the Executive Director of RuralOrganizing.org, a national "boldly progressive and proudly rural" organization based in Columbus, Ohio, working locally and nationally to build a rural America that is empowered, thriving, and fair. And Daily Kos communications director, Carolyn Fiddler to discuss state legislatures and whether or not the Republican Party is salvageable.
Carolyn Fiddler is the Communications Director for Daily Kos and a voting rights and state politics expert with a deep understanding of state legislative policymaking. We will be discussing the awful "Election Integrity Act of 2021" that was passed this past week in Georgia, other voter rights bills happening across the country, and state legislation that third parties and progressive Dems can collaborate on.
We talk about court reform. What is the path forward for adding seats from the lower courts all the way up to the Supreme Court? Does the Supreme Court have any ethics? Literally! We also talk about DC Statehood, why we need it now for our democracy, and the chances that this can happen under the Biden administration. Markos Moulitsas and Carolyn Fiddler speak with Brian Fallon and Bo Shuff. Brian Fallon is the former Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Department of Justice under President Barack Obama, top aide to Sen. Chuck Schumer, and National Press Secretary for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign He is the co-founder and executive director of Demand Justice a progressive organization working on court reform. After we finished with our excellent guest, Carolyn Fiddler of DailyKos, we went around the room and spoke to some in the crowd at Local 16. Unsurprisingly, the folks were smart and funny and willing to chime in on everything we had all just seen heard from the second night of the Detroit DNC Debates. Producer David Ross is fired for the fourth time. This bonus episode includes content normally saved for supporters of our Patreon (even the lowest tier!).
After the first night of the DNC presidential primary debates in Detroit, it was clear that the framing of issues--both from the CNN moderators and the frontrunner, former Vice President Biden--would comport more with Republican talking points than with the preferences of the progressives in the Democratic party base. Jared is joined by Carolyn Fiddler of DailyKos to talk about the implications of those choices and expectations and reactions before and after the broadcast. Live event at Local 16 restaurant and bar in Washington, DC. Segment 1: Jared and Carolyn react to the first night of ten candidates and expectations for the second slate, including presumptive frontrunner Biden. Segment 2: Jared and Carolyn react to the debate. A full version of this event is available for supporters of At The Table on Patreon. Carolyn Fiddler, Daily Kos communications director, joins Jared At The Table to preview the first DNC debates of the 2020 presidential primary.
Rep Adam Schiff has opened an investigation into the financial ties between Donald Trump and Russia. Trump calls it "presidential harassment," but it's Congress doing their job for a change! He's just not used to it! MORE scandal for the elected Democratic leaders of Virginia this week. After Governor Ralph Northam admitted to wearing blackface and Lt Gov Justin Farfax has serious sexual assault allegations brought against him, the THIRD in line, AG Mark Herring has now admitted that he also wore blackface at a party in the 1980s. If ALL of them step down, that means that a Republican could take over as governor. What a disaster. We talk to Rep Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Ginger Gibson from Reuters and Carolyn Fiddler from DailyKos.
A huge win for progressive Democrats last night. Joe Crowley, establishment Democrat, lost to a former Bernie staffer, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. She's 28 years old, she's called for the abolishment of ICE and wants Medicare for All. Does the Democratic Party get the message?Plus, Trump's travel ban is upheld by the Supreme Court. Shameful. Guest host Alexi McCammond from Axios hosts today's show and welcomes Senior Organizing Director of Generation Progress from Center for American Progress, Anisha Singh, Carolyn Fiddler from DailyKos and Jessica Schulberg from HuffPost.
The disruptive power of social protest. And Bill Press talks with Carolyn Fiddler about the political power of democrats in 2018. Author and Harvard political scientist Danielle Allen tells a tragic story of how the “war on drugs” has abandoned the people it’s supposed to protect. Kenneth Andrews of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill answers this question about social protest in the era of Trump. Can it lead to long term change? And Bill Press interviews Carolyn Fiddler of Daily Kos about all the wins that Democrats are racking up around the country. ------------------------------------- Support the Show Had enough of Fox News, the House Freedom Caucus, and Donald Trump? If you want the facts that you won’t get from them or from the fake news sites of the alt-right … then stay tuned! . Our sponsor, 21st Century Democrats, works hard to get everyday Democrats involved in returning our party to its roots... and to success at the ballot box. Sit back and listen, then stand up and fight. And follow 21st Century Democrats on Facebook for all the latest progressive news. We’re glad you can join us. ------------------------------------- Danielle Allen Danielle Allen is the director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. She was awarded a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 2001. In her most recent book, “Cuz: The Life and Times of Michael A.,” she tells the story of her cousin, a young man who was tried as an adult at age 15 for attempted carjacking. After 13 years in prison, he was released and died violently at the age of 29. It is a story she says, about the deep and destructive “war on drugs” that has corrupted a criminal justice system that has abandoned our nation’s youth. Kenneth Andrews Half a million protesters are expected to show up in Washington, DC later this month. Even more will join them in sister marches across the country. Led by students from Parkland, Florida, their goal is to change the nation’s gun laws. Protest historian Kenneth Andrews says it takes more than hitting the streets to create long term change. Carolyn Fiddler Bill Press talks “Blue Wave” with Carolyn Fiddler of Daily Kos. Jim Hightower Why not the Doug Jones Average.
Members of the Trump Administration are jumping ship left and right. Will anyone be around to help him actually get anything done??We talk to Carolyn Fiddler from Daily Kos about all the wine that Democrats are racking up around the country. Alan Pyke from ThinkProgress gives an update on the White House's plan to combat the opioid epidemic and Katherine Tully-McManus tells of how the #MeToo movement has come to Congress.
19 February 2018 – At this point it really all boils down to one thing, we cannot win until we win. Everything we cover on the show today boils down to that. Prosecuting those who colluded with Russia, opening our hearts and borders to Syrian refugees, securing our elections, passing gun safety legislation – none of these are doable until we have taken Congress back (and even then it’s going to be a tough fight.) AND we can’t just win on the Federal level – states are key and that’s why we wanted to have Carolyn Fiddler, the Daily Kos Political Editor and Senior Communications Advisor on the show this week. Carolyn is a specialist in state races, something I know we do not cover enough. We promise to do better because, we cannot win until we win. In the top bock of the show Will asks you to take a look at a video made by friend of the pod, Landon Shroder, which is the first in a series telling the story of Syrians who have fled to America. I don’t care who you are, this one will reach into your heart and remind you that humanity, kindness, life and love are things which bind us together. Lots of things are tearing us apart but can we please, please, please agree that kindness simply must be a shared value. In my main block I cover the MMT take on inflation. It’s a real thrill ride. We are celebrating our return from hiatus by joining in the celebration for the arrival of the brand new Daily Kos Political Editor and Senior Communications Advisor, Carolyn Fiddler (@cFidd). Carolyn begins her work with dKos today so it seemed the perfect time to interview her. She comes to dKos from the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) where she was the Communications Director. She has deep knowledge of state-level campaigns and her hiring signals the fierce nature of the focus dKos bringing to its work to elect Democrats nationwide at all levels of government. Today is also the beginning of a new format for Hopping Mad. Will and I feel like we had set-up a show which was too dense and difficult for us to sustain indefinitely but we vey much wanted to continue it so we have evolved. I think you will find that the show is more conversational, there will be more "umms" and pauses and, in fact, it will move a bit slower because we are going to stop trying to cram too much show into too little time. We are going to keep our focus on the resistance, 2018, modern money (#MMT) and, inevitably, Scotland (*wink*). We are also going to continue to be one of the few US-based podcasts which will bring you news and commentary about international issues. Annnnddd - we are inviting you to join us in the weekly segment, The Lying Liar Lie of the Week. You can submit your nominations here, on this site, or directly to us at ImHoppingMad@gmail.com. Again, we are happy to be back and so glad you are still with us. Carrots! - Arliss

January 31, 2024The silly season is here again, and it appears that, from now until November, we are going to be fed a steady diet of horse race journalism, as story after story will be spun into an election story, whether the story in question is one or not.
