Eggs – a nutritious and affordable source of protein. Or they were. The cost of a box of eggs has been rocketing around the world. And in some places, where it's long been common to start the day on an egg – supplies are under pressure. In this programme, Ruth Alexander explores the challenges egg producers are facing - including what can be done about the seemingly ever-present threat of avian influenza. She speaks to Amanda Mdodana, a poultry farmer in Mpumalanga, South Africa; Phillip Crawley, a poultry farmer in Leicestershire, UK; Mark Jacob, poultry and egg economist in Arkansas, US; and Professor Munir Iqbal, head of the Avian Influenza Virus group at the Pirbright Institute, UK. "The media is scared of telling the truth when it comes to horrible things happening in politics. Nobody was set up for this rise of fascism...and it is fascism. And also the willingness of the Republican party to cheat in elections and and try to overturn legitimate elections. The future of the Chicago Reader is in question. After years of money troubles and ownership changes, the 50-year-old paper is set to become a nonprofit to gain financial stability. But the transition has been delayed because of a dispute between the Reader's current owners over its leadership. The Reader has been an essential part of Chicago's media landscape — at one point, its classifieds were so coveted that people would steal copies from the printing press before they were distributed — and longtime journalist Mark Jacob argues the Reader's owners should come to an agreement to save the storied paper. Jacob has written about the dispute and the Reader's 50th anniversary, and he talks with host Jacoby Cochran about why the Reader is so important in Chicago. In this episode, CJ talks with Mark Jacob, one of the three co-authors of the recently published book Aftershock: The Human Toll of War (published by CityFiles Press). This book presents an extensive collection of photos from the last year of World War II (many of which have never been seen before by the public) taken by US military photographers, scanned from the original negatives to give amazing picture quality, providing a unique, unfiltered, and often disturbing glimpse of what the latter phases of the largest total war in human history actually looked like. In many cases the authors have been able to research the backstories of the photos, and have provided descriptive captions that add detail and further humanize the stories told by the images. On this Veteran's Day, we speak with Mark Jacob, co-author of "Aftershock: The Human Toll of War- Haunting World War II Images by America's Soldier Photographers." The book contains 250 images taken by photographers of the U.S. Signal Corps of the U.S. Army during 1945, the last year of World War II. Jacob and his co-authors looked through more than 100,000 images housed in the National Archives before choosing these particular images to include in the book. Most of these photographs have never before been published.
