On October 29, 2024, flash floods in Spain's eastern Valencia region claimed 228 lives. More than six months later, residents are still struggling to rebuild. Beyond the economic toll, many say they cannot move on until accountability is addressed. Victims argue that lives lost – in cars, basements, and on the streets – could have been saved if regional authorities had issued timely and adequate warnings. FRANCE 24's Sarrah Morris reports.

hat's a pretty strong title but the question here is when you get the justice you demand, what's next? What do you expect? What should you expect? Here's an important question. Should you have demanded justice in the first place? If the answeris no, then who has the right to demand it?
Ten years have passed since the I-S-group attacked Sinjar in northern Iraq, killing and enslaving thousands of Yazidis. But many survivors, including those in Australia's Yazidi community, are still waiting for justice for what happened to them. The scale of atrocities perpetrated against the Yazidi community by the Islamic State group include mass executions, forced conversions, abduction, enslavement and systematic sexual violence. Those are acts which bodies such as a commission mandated by the United Nations Human Rights Council have called a genocide. And a warning, some people may find this story distressing.
Left-wingers have been losing at the Supreme Court in recent years thanks to the intellectual success of the conservative legal movement, audacity in Republican management of judicial confirmations, and the aid of the Fates. But progressives are not taking these setbacks lying down; the hot new advocacy cause, led by the classically Everything Leftism-branded Arabella Advisors spinoff Demand Justice, is “court reform,” a euphemism for rigging judicial results by manipulating the composition of the Supreme Court, which has been set by law and custom without alteration since 1869. Joining us to discuss Demand Justice and the leftist crusade for court-packing is our colleague Parker Thayer. If the six right-wing dogmatists who now literally rule the Supreme Court wonder why 70 percent of the American people consider them somewhere between politically corrupt and grotesque, they might re-read their Kafkasesque decision last month perverting the meaning of bribery.Appropriately enough, the case involved garbage trucks. A smalltown mayor had funneled a million-dollar contract for new garbage trucks to a local seller, which then made a $13,000 payoff to the mayor. Obvious graft. But no, the six supremes decreed that the payoff was not illegal, because it was given to the mayor after the garbage truck contract was issued. Taking money before would be a bribe, they babbled, but money given afterwards is an innocent “gratuity” – like tipping a waiter for good service. The court's distortion of kindergarten-level ethics was written by Brett Kavanaugh, infamous for his own frat-boy moral contortions. In his formal opinion, Brett rhetorically asked if such after-the-fact kickbacks should be considered bribes. “The answer.” he proclaimed,” is no.”Of course, as any reasonable person would tell the black-robed fabricator, the obvious answer is: “Hell yes!”Kavanaugh even tried to trivialize such official bribery, calling it no more sinister than parents sending a gift basket to thank their child's teacher for a job well done. Hello, Mr. Clueless, this was a $13,000 gift basket!! The truck dealer was obviously rewarding the mayor for handing out a million taxpayer dollars to it!Do something! We're collaborating with friends to build out fresh actions you can take, and in the meantime, check these out:* Share the Justice Can't Wait updated website.* Share Stand Up America's Supreme Court Voter website, which aims to educate and mobilize voters on the impact the next president will have on the future of the U.S. Supreme Court.* Join United for Democracy in calling on Congress to rein in the out-of-control Supreme Court.* Demand Justice has been advocating for the Judiciary Act, which would expand the court by four seats. What is a SCOTUS? Sounds like a prehistoric critter scuttling along some seabed. But, no, it is the acronym for our Supreme Court of the United States.SCOTUS is meant to be the impartial arbiter of legal disputes over what our laws mean. Yet, who are these arbiters, how are they elected, why don't we even know their names, and if they go rogue, imposing their personal autocratic beliefs on our nation's democratic ideals… what then?Well, structurally, SCOTUS is undemocratic, a relic of monarchial rule. Unlike the 535 members of the legislative branch, who are elected from diverse districts across America, there are only nine supremes, and none of the current bunch have ever faced the people, even in an election for dogcatcher. They are hand-picked by political and moneyed elites, and most blatantly lie to win approval for their lifetime appointments. Once enthroned, they have no accountability to us commoners, who are expected to blindly obey their edicts.Today, out of 330 million Americans, six right-wing SCOTUS members have seized control of the court… and our government. They claim supremacy over the People, the President, and the Congress – arbitrarily dictating what is “legal” for elected officials and the public to do. Indeed, they are now making up laws on abortion, presidential power, voting rights, environmental protection, and much more to suit their personal political and religious biases. Moreover, they operate behind closed doors, with no disclosure of their conflicts of interest. This is Jim Hightower saying… Call this what it is: A right-wing extremist power grab. And it is fast supplanting our people's historic democratic progress with a kleptocracy of autocratic, plutocratic, theocratic rule. The only remedy is a head-on people's rebellion to democratize this totally unAmerican court.Do something! Hundreds of people die every year at the hands of US Border Patrol agents, either from being beaten, shot, car chases or being left stranded in the desert, simply for exercising their right to move. A US Supreme Court decision, Hernandez Vs Mesa, in February 2020 granted the US Border Patrol the ability to murder people on the Mexican side of the border without being held accountable. Clearing the FOG spoke with four women from the Border Patrol Victims Network - Ana Maria Vasquez and Tracye Peterson, who are volunteers, Marisol Alcantara, who was shot by border agents, and Yanelis Laurencia, whose 23-year-old son was murdered. They are working to raise awareness of the rampant violence on the border that targets migrants and local residents, and to demand justice. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.

Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
This week, Clearing the FOG speaks with two advocates for the freedom of political prisoners Mumia Abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier. Mumia Abu-Jamal is waiting to hear if Judge Lucretia Clemons will grant a new hearing on his case that includes new evidence of corruption in the legal process that led to his false conviction. On February 16, port workers will strike on the West Coast in support of an international day of action in for Mumia. Noelle Hanrahan of Prison Radio talks about his case and the carceral state. Leonard Peltier has now served almost 50 years in prison on a murder charge involving FBI agents. Coleen Rowley, a whistleblower formerly with the FBI, recently wrote to President Biden asking for clemency for Peltier. Rowley discusses the COINTEL Program, which is very much alive, and the culture inside the FBI. Both call on the public to take action to free Abu-Jamal and Peltier. By Amy Goodman & Denis Moynihan The Julian Assange prosecution poses a fundamental threat to the freedom of speech and a free press. President Biden, currently embroiled in his own classified document scandal, knows this, and should immediately drop the charges against Julian Assange.
Thursday, December 22nd, 2022 Chris Kang is the Co-Founder and Chief Counsel of Demand Justice. He served in the White House for nearly seven years as Deputy Counsel to President Obama and Special Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs. We talk about court reform from diversifying the bench of judges to expanding the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of the United States is actually the only court in the entire country that does not have a binding code of ethics. Congress has changed the size of the Supreme Court seven times before. It's very much within their power and ability to change the size of the court again now to restore balance. When you have a system of checks and balances set up in our constitution and one branch of government gets too powerful, the other two branches are expected and really need to step in. BrownTown invites Hannah Linsky (she/her), vintage stylist, seller, educator, and liver and breather of all things fashion to unpack the politics of dress. The friends use their experiences with clothing and fashion growing up to dissect the often overlooked yet important cultural artifact. As an everyday window into individual and collective beliefs and values, the limitless expression of how we adorn our bodies is a site for discussion around gender and patriarchy; sustainability, labor, and capitalism; and much more. The politics of dress communicate praxis of power and hierarchy yet offer an opportunity for resistance and decolonization. Stay tuned for Part 2! GUESTHannah Linsky is a vintage stylist, seller, occasional model and avid collector. She lives and breathes fashion and loves playing dress up almost as much as she loves talking fashion. She is a recent graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned her Master's in Art Education. Her work Revolutionary Dress centers around examining historical movements through the lens of dress.Rev Dress (site, Instagram) looks at the ways dress has been used as a strategic tool of resistance and revolution, across countries, cultures, and communities from the past and today. Dress is an important and often overlooked cultural artifact, a window into so many aspects of human life and behavior. Studying what people wore can help us understand their daily experiences, beliefs, values, social structures and so much more. We can use what we've learned about past people and movements to inform our choices today, and better recognize how our dress can be one tool amongst many in our collective, ongoing fight toward liberation. The Canal neighborhood is over 90 percent Latino and is the most segregated neighborhood in the Bay Area. When body-camera footage revealed the police beating of a day laborer, Latino residents decried what they say is the longstanding mistreatment by the city's police. Chronicle reporters Joshua Sharpe and Joel Umanzor join host Cecilia Lei to discuss the incident and the limits of local police reforms. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Learn more about your ad choices. Over the years, this podcast has focused on highlighting those people who are not only experts in identifying the significant problems facing the United States and its institutions, but those who propose bold solutions to those problems. In the past weeks, those problems have expanded significantly. Once again, Joe Manchin—a single senator representing a single state—has blocked critical environmental legislation. Despite being a democrat, he's tanked the Democratic majority in the senate, and he can do this because of the filibuster. At the same time, a rogue, extremist supreme court has undermined very basic freedoms in our nation, from the right to access abortion, go to school free from religious influence, and even receive full Miranda protections if arrested. Today, we'll look back at two of our episodes where our guests propose ways to get past these critical problems. First, we'll hear from Adam Jentleson. Adam is a writer and former Deputy Chief of Staff for then Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. He joined us to discuss his book Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy. Next, we hear from Tamara Brummer, Executive Eirector for Outreach with Demand Justice, who joined us to discuss efforts to reform and expand the supreme court. Highlights: “Lindsey Graham, who I otherwise detest, he's an absolute war-hawking neo-con Rino, but nevertheless, even he recognized that there has been all kinds of Soros-linked dark money surrounding Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination as Supreme Court Justice.”“Lindsey Graham brought up Arabella to put out there that Ketanji Jackson was pushed to the front of nominees by organizations like Arabella at the expense of other, perhaps more qualified judges, such as the judge he mentioned, Michelle Childs.”“The Washington Post, according to Hayden Ludwig over at Capital Research, is basically hiding the activities of Arabella from their readership, and instead using the accusations leveled by Graham and others as a foil to turn around and rail against Republicans.”“It's not just Soros that's involved in all of this. According to Influence Watch.com, Demand Justice is owned by Ezra Reese, who is formerly part of the law firm Perkins Coo-ee. Now does that name sound familiar? Well, Perkins Coo-ee is the law firm that's actually behind that fabricated Russian dossier that was used by the FBI against President Trump!”“Ketanji Jackson's nomination should be actively resisted by every single Republican. The dark money behind her alone should disqualify her from any consideration among any Republican worthy of the party.”Timestamps: [02:25] How Lindsey Graham is recognizing all kinds of Soros-linked dark money surrounding Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination[04:00] How the Washington Post is calling on Lindsey Graham's report as false[07:29] On the organization called ‘Demand Justice' that's pouring money into lobbying for Ketanji Jackson[09:00] Why all of this is actually evidence that the left is actually panickingResources:Protect your Savings with a Gold IRA! In today's episode Carl explains why republicans must fight to stop Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's appointment to the Supreme Court. She is pro-Abortion, anti-Second Amendment and she's been sympathetic to illegal immigration and Guantanamo Bay detainees. The left has nominated her because she will be a rubber stamp for Demand Justice. By using her race and sex, Democrats are hoping republicans will help fast pass her to the Supreme Court. They should not! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
