(Conversation recorded on November 12th, 2024)     In today's modern era, the overwhelming flood of information that constantly flows our way can leave us feeling disoriented, lost, and powerless. Even science – our most trusted source of truth – can be taken out of context to fuel division and distort the reality around us. In the midst of this confusion, how can we learn to ground ourselves and find guideposts that can direct our lives and work?  Today, Nate is joined by storyteller and social thinker, Dougald Hine, to explore the importance of narratives in shaping our understanding of the world and how they can help us navigate the complexities of life, especially in the face of ecological crises. Together, they discuss the need for a reframing of conversations around environmental and climate issues, the importance of grassroots responses to systemic crises, and the concept of ‘engaged surrender' as a way to navigate the challenges of modern life.  How can we foster emotional resilience in the face of ecological overshoot and the death of modernity? What role do art and storytelling play alongside science and data in responding to our collective human predicament? And how can we strengthen our communities and plant the seeds for a different way of life, starting in our own small corners of the world?   About Dougald Hine: Dougald Hine is a social thinker, writer and speaker. After an early career as a BBC journalist, he went on to co-found the Dark Mountain Project, where he was the director until 2019. He is also the co-author, with Paul Kingsnorth, of Uncivilisation: The Dark Mountain Manifesto, and his latest book is titled, At Work in the Ruins: Finding Our Place in the Time of Science, Climate Change, Pandemics & All the Other Emergencies.  Dougald's recent projects include Notes From Underground, a ten-part essay series for Bella Caledonia exploring the deep roots of the new climate movements, and The Great Humbling, a podcast he co-hosts with Ed Gillespie. He and Anna Björkman are creating a school called HOME, ‘a gathering place and a learning community for those who are drawn to the work of regrowing a living culture'. SERIES 2 EPISODE 108: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: ONE of these days ONE of these judges will have to take the bullshit by the horns and jail Trump overnight for contempt of court. He made a mockery of all the laws of the nation again yesterday in New York and must be punished. Clearly somebody or something has punished him for something. Three or four red marks have suddenly sprouted on his right hand. James Carville thinks they're evidence of the secondary stage of syphilis. I think they're more consistent with an old man slipping on ice and grabbing something to try to stop himself from face-planting. But I'm sure Trump will claim they're stigmata. America's constipated political pundits have finally figured out that the interior numbers from Iowa confirm he didn't crush ANYTHING there; in fact only 8% of Iowa's Republicans voted for him! Oh and Nikki Haley is up to 38% in New Hampshire. Trump might not be the only one disqualified under the 14th Amendment. Representative Dan Goldman has moved to censure Representative Elise "Hostages" Stefanik B-Block (21:15) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The fascists are going to get another win out of the Supreme Court. Marjorie Taylor Greene sets herself up for another dick-pic joke. (25:23) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Argentina's New President - the guy in the Wolverine costume - blames the world's ills on feminism. The Babylon Bee's best bit of satire is its belief that it's funny. Ben Carson says why not concentration camps? The migrants have to have a place to stay! C-Block (30:35) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Beaten puppy Sweet Cheeks needs our help in North Carolina. (32:05) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Trump's rage against MSNBC for not worshiping him enough is actually not something new. The Republicans think they can get away with bullying MSNBC because they succeeded at it as long ago as 2008 - with me - and with the help of Tom Brokaw.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Daianna Karaian is co-founder of Today Do This, which aims to empower everyone, every day (Today) to take action on (Do) what matters to them (This) (LinkedIn, personal website, Twitter). The theme was people being able to take meaningful action in their work. Why?First, "The scale of the change that's needed is only going to happen if social and environmental considerations are woven into the daily decisions and responsibilities of everyone in the company at every level in every department." Second, "I think there's this really common misconception that action is reserved for those in power, that sort of only a few people, in powerful positions can do anything that makes any difference in the world. And I think that's nonsense. I think power is accumulated by those who take action."Third, taking meaningful action also makes people happier and more productive. With that in mind, some things you can do after listening to this interview: -Subscribe to the Today Do This newsletter, which "revisits one major headline each week and suggests a simple, practical action you can take that day to make a difference". -Contact Daianna through this link.LinksBusiness In The CommunityFuterraPowerful Times Podcasts referred to in to interview: Ed Gillespie (the very first!) and Rowan Conway.Dr Martin Luther King's Six Steps for Non Violent Social Change:Information GatheringEducationPersonal CommitmentNegotiationDirect ActionReconciliationUN Sustainable Development GoalsB Corp CertificationTimings0:50 - Q1 What are you doing now? We're just shy of a month out from the 2022 midterm elections, a race that promises the GOP at least a leading edge in the House, if not a tsunami. And perhaps even a Senate win. But there remain critical unknowns: What will happen with the cohort of Trump-endorsed nominees, none of whom seem the best and the brightest their state has to offer?  Trump cost the GOP the Senate once before; will that happen again, and will he pay for it this time? And then, the million-dollar question: depending on how this race goes, what will 2024 look like?  All these questions and more on today's episode with Karl Rove. Does it still make sense to talk about climate change? This seems a strange question to ask, for someone who has spent much of his adult life talking to people about climate change, but it is the question writer Dougald Hine has found himself wondering about lately. When we talk about climate change, we are entering into a conversation that is framed by science, yet climate change also asks us questions that lead beyond that frame. In recent years, however, the language of science has become supercharged: from the placards that read ‘Unite Behind the Science' to the political leaders who insist that they are ‘following the science' in their response to the pandemic, there's a new emphasis on the total authority of science that makes it harder to ask these frame-breaking questions. This is converging with a particular approach to climate change, one that points to a dystopian future in which the world has been remade as an object of total management. What does this mean for how we have meaningful conversations about what Dougald Hine refers to as ‘the trouble we're in'? Dougald Hine is a writer and culture maker. Ten years ago, Dougald co-founded The Dark Mountain Project, which has grown into world-wide community of artists and writers. He and his partner Anna Björkman now run A School Called Home, a learning community for those drawn to the work of regrowing a living culture. He also podcasts together with futurist Ed Gillespie at The Great Humbling. Recently, a CBS News reporter asked McAuliffe, "If you win, how are you going to work with those parents who have concerns about how things are being taught in schools across the commonwealth?""Let's be very clear here," McAuliffe replied. "This is all generated by Glenn Youngkin."The Democrat went on to compare the education issue in 2021 to the issue of the MS-13 gang, which Republican nominee Ed Gillespie brought up during Virginia's 2017 election. I travel to the far reaches of Europe on the train, travelling to Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Italy, Mallorca, as the extent of my reach. I long one day to take the Trans-Siberian express. Yes, there are now places in the world I probably will never reach, but that's OK. I can honestly say that not flying has not diminished my quality of life at all. I travel slower, I see more. As we reach a time where airlines and travel companies are falling over themselves to tempt you back onto airplanes to head off on holiday, we are taking a pause, a breath, to ask a question that once felt heretical, but which now feels rather exciting… “what if we all stopped flying?”   Anna Hughes is an author and flight-free adventurer, and hasn't been on a plane for more than a decade. ** Please note, audio improves from 02:30 ** Welcome back to Leading in a Climate changed World, where, we return to our interviews from before the coronavirus lockdown. In this episode, we talk about the climate crisis with Ed Gillespie and discuss striking the right balance between hopefulness and hopelessness, and the best way to avoid overwhelming humanity into doing nothing. Robin asks about the people and organisations showing the courage that might inspire us at this time, and whether B-Corps and business round-tables are just window dressing or are genuinely inspiring sustainable change. Ed talks about his travels, and the communities he encountered, including tribes which have scarcely changed their way of life, for the last hundreds of years and reveals a number of initiatives, which might just help us onto the right path. The big story of never-ending Progress has captured our imaginations for hundreds of years. But now we seem to be witnessing its unravelling. The search for other stories is no longer a fringe activity, but taking place in all parts of society. What do we want to keep from this story, and what do we leave behind? In this episode we explore the idea of Progress together with writer Dougald Hine. Ten years ago, Dougald co-founded The Dark Mountain Project, which has grown into world-wide community of artists and writers. Jon Richardson and the Futurenauts: Episode 8 - Climate ChangeHello@jonandthefuturenauts.comIt was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Humanity stands at a crossroads. The mighty forces of progress have lifted billions out of poverty. Energy has lit and warmed (or cooled) our homes and powered us overland, sea and into the air. We grow enough food to feed 10 billion people. And for the first time ever in history the internet is poised to connect every single person on the planet. Together. As one. What could possibly go wrong? If only it were that simple. Unfortunately there is also a lot to be very worried about. Our engine of progress is out of control. We’re destroying beautiful wild and natural habitat at a rate of knots. Humankind has kick-started the sixth mass extinction of biodiversity. Burning billions of years of fossilised sunshine as coal, oil and gas is overheating the planet. Industrial agriculture is destroying our soils, with less than a hundred harvests left. Nationalism, populism and factionalism bubble up from a toxic online culture swimming in ‘fake news’. Has it all gone irrecoverably wrong?Comedian Jon Richardson – the ‘Ultimate Worrier’ - is going to try and find out.Jon doesn’t sleep much at night. The questions he is asking himself in the small, dark hours see to that. Are we going to run out of food? Is it already too late to stop climate change? Should I start learning Mandarin? Are killer death robots from the future already among us? Will my kids grow up to see a real tiger or giraffe? Could Trump become ‘President for Life?’ Why hasn’t anyone yet made an intelligent hairbrush? Oh they have? As you were…Playing on his own paranoia Jon will discuss his fears with guarded optimists Ed Gillespie and Mark Stevenson aka ‘The Futurenauts’. Authors, futurists and provocateurs, to ease Jon’s angst Ed and Mark take him on adventures through the futures we need that already exist today. A 'Keep it Light Media' ProductionAll enquiries: hello@keepitlightmedia.com

Gov. Ralph Northam (D-VA) came out in a viral clip with the same message as some Asian female state lawmaker who advocated for infanticide — saying that a baby could be delivered and born, resuscitated if need be, and kept comfortable while the mother and doctor decide what to do with the child. This reportedly left open the opportunity to kill the born baby, per a state bill pushed by the Asian Democrat “lady” Kathy Tran who said yes that even a baby in dilation could be killed. Because Democrats believe in “science.” BTW: Wash. Post did a puff piece for that woman, titled: "Del. Kathy Tran was known for nursing her baby on the House floor. Now she's getting death threats over abortion." They include a bunch of photos of her campaigning and being in office while carrying her baby daughter. Here's another leftist Asian: Eugene Gu, a well-known far-left anti-Trump “doctor,” who tweeted: Don't let Trump and the Republicans fool you with their false propaganda regarding “late term abortions.” No responsible physician in America would ever terminate a fetus that can be safely delivered from the mother and survive outside the womb. Doctors do not commit infanticide. Also worth noting that at least one Asian American “citizen” (anchor baby) was arrested among a few Asians running an operation taking advantage of our idiotic birthright citizenship policy which people want to pretend is part of the 14th Amendment, but it's not. They use that pretend law to commit birth tourism, immigration fraud, and other crimes to make Chinese baby “citizens” of America. The 14th Amendment says people born here UNDER OUR JURISDICTION (as in black slaves born here who were not previously counted as full citizens) shall be considered citizens. (That doesn't count illegal alien mothers or Chinese fake tourists.) Blacks want to pretend they weren't counted as full human beings because they want to dehumanize the whites of that time, acting as though the whites were inhumane, with no soul, and treated fellow human beings as animals. It's not true. For generations blacks have treated one another and other fellow human beings as animals, as well as acting like animals, as evidenced by abortion rates, homicide rates, violent crime rates, race riots, etc. Trump tweeted about Gov. Northam: Democrat Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia just stated, “I believe that I am not either of the people in that photo.” This was 24 hours after apologizing for appearing in the picture and after making the most horrible statement on “super” late term abortion. Unforgivable! https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/s... Trump also tweeted: Ed Gillespie, who ran for Governor of the Great State of Virginia against Ralph Northam, must now be thinking Malpractice and Dereliction of Duty with regard to his Opposition Research Staff. If they find that terrible picture before the election, he wins by 20 points! https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/s... REMEMBER LAST WEEK: FL Sec of State, appointed by new Republican Gov. Ron de Santis, resigned after photos came out of him in blackface. (Producer note: Just another example of whites/Republicans not standing by one another, and a white man caving and resigning over a petty issue.) https://heavy.com/news/2019/01/michae... The hateful people are the anti-white so-called “anti-racist” media, politicians, activists, and useful idiots who want to punish whites for being free. Dressing up as black, Mexican, American Indian, or whatever is fine, it's fun, it's harmless. In history male actors dressed up as women to portray women — they didn't have women play women but men. That's way worse than minstrelsy, the whites playing blacks.

In an increasingly desperate attempt to develop a narrative for the coming Democratic collapse, the Democrats have indulged themselves in what for half a century they've habitually attributed to the American right -- the paranoid style in American politics. The talk is of dark conspiracies secret money, foreign influence, big corporations, with Karl Rove and, yes, Ed Gillespie lurking ominously behind the scenes. The only thing missing is the Halliburton-Cheney angle.
