On this week's podcast we speak with RAF Chinook Aircrewman Liz McConaghy. Liz grew up in a small country town and at 17 joined the RAF, to follow her dream of becoming a chinook Aircrewman serving for 17 years a job she loved. At 21 Liz was the youngest aircrew member to deploy to Iraq and was the only female ‘crewman' on the Chinook wing for four years. Liz completed another deployment to Iraq and would deploy 10 times to Helmand province in Afghanistan in support of the enduring Operation Herrick Campaign. Liz's inspiringly honest story reveals the highs and lows that she witnessed at war, and the cost that came with both, physically and mentally for those involved. During her deployments, she survived not only a near fatal wire strike onboard her CH47, but numerous emery fire ‘Contacts' defending her crew by returning fire from both the M134 ‘Minigun' and M60 weapons entrusted to her to operate. Liz'sgreatest honour of all her duties was serving on the Medical Emergency Response Team or “MERT”, flying ambulance as it was commonly known. This involved recovering wounded soldiers from the battlefield, often under fire, and witnessing them both die and come back to life at her feet in the cabin of her Chinook. Liz saw Camp bastion grow from a barbed wire fence surrounding an area of tents in the sand to a huge Operating Base it became. Very few Chinook crew members if any spanned the length of time as Liz did. Been a few days since my last episode. but I think this one is pretty strong.  First time in awhile with no Indo-PACOM story- oh wait- we have a nice story from Australia concerning their defense budget. Also- two stories from Germany, two stories from the UK, and the latest US Security Assistance Package to Ukraine.  Finally- two very good US Army stories from Ashely Roque (Breaking Defense): the latest on the IVAS Program & the planned production increase of Javelin Missiles and CLUs.

Another good episode- Yes, I am biased.  Great Ukraine training stories- combined arms training from the US (Mech Infantry Battalion & Artillery) and Infantry Training from Australia. We also have two new sources- the UK Defence Journal and the Asia Military Review- and we discuss a story from each- actually two from the UK Defence Journal. Also- somewhere in there we talk about M142 HIMARS for the Netherlands via a US Foreign Military Sales (FMS).  Finally- the CH47 Chinooks are back flying via a new part.

At 21, Sergeant Liz McConaghy was the youngest Chinook crew person to see action, serving in Iraq. She was also the longest-serving female Chinook aircrew member on 18(B) Squadron. Liz completed two tours of Iraq and a further ten deployments to Afghanistan. During her deployments, she survived not only a near fatal strike onboard her CH47, but numerous enemy fire contacts, by returning fire from both the M134 Minigun and M60 weapons. Her biggest honour of all her duties, was serving on the Medical Emergency Response Team. (MERT) This involved recovering wounded soldiers from the battlefield, often under fire. Chris Peche, SSG (Retired), joined the United States Army prior to 9-11 and found himself assigned to the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (Old Guard) at Fort Myers. What an interesting assignment which can consist of guarding the Tomb of an Unknown Soldier, Funeral detail, Flag detail and many other tasks. All while they must maintain their infantry fighting skills.9-11 happened and he has some great never before heard stories of what it was like right afterwards in Washington, DC and the Pentagon. From performing guard duty to helping remove debris from the Pentagon, Chris was right there as a young Soldier. Soon afterwards he had the opportunity to reenlist and join Army Aviation as a CH47 Chinook Repairer/Crew Chief. All of his deployments were to Afghanistan. Chris spent some time in the Special Operations Aviation Regiment known as 160th SOAR! He honed his maintenance and leadership skills during those training and deployment opportunities. What a privilege to have worked with Chris and to have him on the show. On today’s show I’m joined by Greg Maiden and Aaron Jones from Boeing Defence Australia. Greg recently achieved an incredible milestone in his aviation career as the first aircrew member to achieve 4000 hours on the CH-47 Chinook. Greg always had an interest in aviation and his career in the Army began in 1990 as an avionics technician. He first encountered the CH-47 Chinook in 1994 when he was amongst the first members of the Australian Defence Force to be trained on the aircraft in the United States. Fast forward to 1999 and Greg’s career in aircrew began. Greg was lucky enough in his career to undertake multiple international and Australian deployments which included several tours in Afghanistan. Greg is now an integral part of the School of Army Aviation with Boeing Defence Australia’s Army Aviation Training and Training Support program He looks likely to retain his record stating that he plans to remain flying until he is forced to retire. As you would know, the ADF could not, and does not operate in isolation. It’s supported by thousands of passionate people in the defence industry. Today I’m also joined by Aaron Jones. Aaron is a Senior Manager of the Sustainment Support Group for the CH-47. We talk about how lots of people had Mat grow on them. Post dagger Mat is much more lovable. Despite Ingtar's sacrifice, the party is slowly being surrounded. They discuss their options while they themselves now face death. It's Mat's idea to to blow the horn. No one objects. The sound it makes is as golden as the horn itself. Time Stops. A fog rises as the Whitecloaks begin their charge westward toward Falme, and the Seanchan march eastward toward the Whitecloak cavalry, with Rand and his party in between. Are the heroes horses heroes as well? After greeting Mat and the Dragon, Hawkwing tells Hurin that sometimes new heroes are added to their number. Who from this age might become join their ranks? Could Rand be one, or is the Dragon separate in each age? Lot's of interesting questions about the Horn of Valere, it's connection to the world of dreams, and whether or not Rand is always the dragon. We talk about some quotes from Robert Jordan about The Wheel of Time universe's cyclical timeline, and where his ideas for that came from. We also discuss the irony of Hawkwing leading the heroes against the armies of his own descendants. We spend some time on light and dark prophecy, on whether or not they're self fulfilling, and if they may sometimes be more trouble than they're worth. When Rand asks the heroes to help save Egwene, they laugh at him. Birgitte even points out that he's always having some trouble with a woman. When Rand battles Ishmael in the sky, he forces Saidin into his power-wrought blade. Is that Ba'alzamon is afraid of being struck and why he's eventually so badly injured by the wound Rand inflicts on him, and perhaps why the cloud of darkness enveloping Ishamael is said to scream when Rand strikes his opponent down.
