From the Point of Woods in Gettysburg National Military Park, Charlie Fennell, Ralph Siegel and Rosanne Zajko sit down with Matt to talk about the military and civilian actions on July 3, 1863, the recognized end of the Battle of Gettysburg. From the Library of Congress: "On July 3, 1863, Union troops repelled a massive artillery assault on Cemetery Ridge during the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg in southern Pennsylvania. During the early morning hours Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered General Longstreet to prepare General Pickett's troops for the assault. Longstreet advised Lee of his reservations about the success of such an advance, which he did not feel Confederate troops could sustain. Lee disregarded Longstreet and maintained his order for a heavy bombardment of Union defenses on the Ridge followed by an advance of Pickett's men. After two hours of heavy shelling, Confederate Colonel Alexander sent word to General Pickett that the Union troops were withdrawing and encouraged him to come quickly in the interval. Pickett sent his note to General Longstreet who, based on Lee's orders and despite his own reservations, approved the charge. The attack, commonly known as Pickett's Charge or Longstreet's Assault, was an attempt to penetrate the center of Union forces on Cemetery Ridge. During the attack, only one Confederate brigade temporarily reached the top of the ridge—afterwards called the high watermark of the Confederacy—led by Brigadier General Lewis Armistead who, just before being shot, yelled, “Give them cold steel, boys!” The charge ultimately proved disastrous for the Confederates, with casualties approaching 60 percent. As a consequence, Confederate General Robert E. Lee was forced to retreat and ultimately abandon his attempt to reach Washington, D.C. via Pennsylvania..." Read more here. (From the Library of Congress): "On July 2, 1863, the lines of the Battle of Gettysburg, now in its second day, were drawn in two sweeping parallel arcs. The Confederate and Union armies faced each other a mile apart. The Union forces extending along Cemetery Ridge to Culp's Hill, formed the shape of a fish-hook, and the Confederate forces were spread along Seminary Ridge..." Historian Codie Eash and Licensed Town Guide Rosanne Zajko join Matt and Six Question Lentz on the western slop of Seminary Ridge to discuss the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg with a focus on the action in and around the Lutheran Theological Seminary. This year, we've added a new element to all three of the battle anniversary episodes by including the civilian experience with a Licensed Town Guide. From the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center Website: "The Battle of Gettysburg. The Cupola of the Seminary building is utilized as a lookout post by Brigadier General John Buford and his Signal Officer, Lt. Aaron Jerome. From the evening of July 1 to July 5, the building is in Confederate hands, but is occupied by hundreds of wounded United States soldiers. The U.S. Army retakes the building after the Confederate retreat and, until mid-September, the building is one of the largest field hospitals in Gettysburg. After the last patient leaves the building on September 16, classes begin within eight days." Be sure to visit their website, donate or become a member and definitely visit it when you come to Gettysburg. Make sure you get a cupola tour so you can yell down to the lawn: "There's a Devil to pay!" And, while you're here, hire a Licensed Town Guide who will share dozens of civilian stories that will most likely be new to you and will help you get a fuller picture of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Listener (and one of the sponsors of this episode) Casey Turben arranged for us to go to Winchester, Virginia ( a great city surrounded by beautiful scenery) and reocrd a show with historian Jonathan Noyalas from inside of Star Fort on the outskirts of the city. There we talked about Robert Milroy's occupation and subsequent ousting from Winchester during the Battle of Second Winchester, June 13-15. From the American Battlefield Trust: "The Battle of Second Winchester was the second engagement of the Gettysburg Campaign. After his victory at Chancellorsville, Lee decided to invade the North once again to provide relief to war-ravaged Virginia. He hoped to fight and win a decisive battle on Northern soil. Lee planned to march up the Shenandoah Valley to cross into Maryland, where the army's movements would be screened by both the Blue Ridge Mountains and Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry. Lieut. Gen. Richard S. Ewell's II Corps received the mission to clear the valley for the rest of the army, and at Winchester, succeeded in doing so." Back in September of 2022, Matt, Six Questions Lentz, LBGs Chris Army and Tracy Baer and friends went down to Culpeper, Virginia to take a tour of Brandy Station battlefields with Clark "Bud" Hall and then record a show on Fleetwood Hill. Bud has led a remakable effort to preserve hundreds of acres of battlefield over the decades and it's truly an amazing place to visit. The grounds saw far more activity that just that famous cavalry battle on June 9, 1863. From the American Battlefield Trust: "Fought in the second week of June 1863, Brandy Station was the largest cavalry battle ever fought in North America. With momentum firmly in hand after his stunning victory at Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee decided to launch a second Northern invasion. On June 3, the Army of Northern Virginia began the movement away from Fredericksburg. The first leg of the march took the Confederates to Culpeper Court House. From there, Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry division was to screen the infantry as the march continued to the Shenandoah Valley. Stuart's concentration, however, was detected by Union cavalry led by Alfred Pleasonton. Under the assumption that Stuart planned a raid around his right flank toward Washington, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, the commander of the Army of the Potomac, directed Pleasonton to cross the Rappahannock River and destroy the Confederate cavalry. Early on the morning of June 9, Pleasonton sent columns over the Rappahannock at Beverly Ford and Kelly's Ford. Following the crossing at Beverly Ford, the Union troopers truck Stuart's camp in the vicinity of a rail station on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad, Brandy Station. The Confederates quickly rallied, and the Federals ran into stiff resistance at St. James Church and the Richard Cunningham farm. After moving over Kelly's Ford, the Union cavalry split up. One division headed for Brandy Station while the other made their way to Stevensburg. The arrival of blue troopers at Brandy Station threatened the rear of Stuart's position. Stuart countered by deftly shifting his brigades, and the two sides clashed in mounted combat on a long, low ridge that rose from the station called Fleetwood Hill. Correspondingly, Pleasonton's force at Stevensburg were stymied by Confederate horsemen. Unable to break through Stuart's position, Pleasonton abandoned the field after fourteen hours of fighting." Welcome to the thirty-fifth episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast! In the fifth part of our series on the Battle of Roberts Ridge we talk with Warrant Officer Al Mack, the pilot of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment MH-47 Chinook callsign RAZOR 3 delivering SEAL Team MAKO 30 to the top of Takur Ghar mountain at 3:30 am Monday morning 4 March 2002. His Chinook comes under heavy fire from enemy forces and SEAL Neil Roberts falls off the back ramp, which begins the desperate search and rescue for him. Al goes into the small details of how this mission unfolded and the lessons learned from the Battle of Roberts Ridge. Numerous changes were made because Al wrote all of his lessons down! There are several documentaries on the Battle of Roberts Ridge with Al Mack and other participants on YouTube. I suggest you watch these three videos on what happened on Takur Ghar here, here, and the CIA Predator UAV video of John Chapman's heroics here. An article on the recovery of MH-47 Chinook RAZOR 3 called From a Great Height is a great read on how the Army recovered Al Mack's wounded helo from the valley his crew crash-landed in. Two great articles on how a candidate becomes a 160th SOAR Night Stalker are found on the Office of the Command Historian webpage. Support from the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast comes from Wall Pilot, aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. The call to adventure was persuasive, drawing Alan into the special operations community as an MH-47 pilot with the prestigious 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR). Hard work and relentless training vaulted him to the top of his peer group as a Flight Lead and standardization instructor pilot. His experience and leadership traits put him at the forefront of several clandestine special operations, some still too classified to discuss in an open forum. The attacks of September 11, 2001, prompted the creation of a robust and deadly special operations force: Task Force Dagger. Alan C. Mack, Callsign Razor 03, led a team of MH-47E helicopters and armed MH-60s. We touch on this mission about the Horse Soldiers of 5th Special Forces Group Operational Detachment-Alpha (ODA) 595 where he provided aviation support, and a few other operations. Chris Peche, SSG (Retired), joined the United States Army prior to 9-11 and found himself assigned to the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (Old Guard) at Fort Myers. What an interesting assignment which can consist of guarding the Tomb of an Unknown Soldier, Funeral detail, Flag detail and many other tasks. All while they must maintain their infantry fighting skills.9-11 happened and he has some great never before heard stories of what it was like right afterwards in Washington, DC and the Pentagon. From performing guard duty to helping remove debris from the Pentagon, Chris was right there as a young Soldier. Soon afterwards he had the opportunity to reenlist and join Army Aviation as a CH47 Chinook Repairer/Crew Chief. All of his deployments were to Afghanistan. Chris spent some time in the Special Operations Aviation Regiment known as 160th SOAR! He honed his maintenance and leadership skills during those training and deployment opportunities. What a privilege to have worked with Chris and to have him on the show. Greg “Gravy” Coker is a legend from the elite 160th Night Stalkers, the Army's Special Operations Aviation Regiment (aka SOAR). He's a long-time Tier 1 Gun Pilot who flew AH-6 Little Birds, AH-64 Apaches, and AH-1 Cobras in multiple combat theaters, providing direct support for 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta aka Delta Force, 75th Ranger Regiment, and other Special Operators. Greg logged 7,400 hours in his career, including 1,500 hours of combat time across 11 deployments, and was in the first strike packages that went into Afghanistan and Iraq. Greg reached the pinnacle of the military aviation profession by serving as both a Flight Lead and Instructor Pilot in the most coveted and lethal rotary wing unit in the US military. He survived a combat shootdown while laying down cover for Special Operators in Iraq during the first daylight operation for 160th since Operation Gothic Serpent in 1993 (aka Blackhawk Down). Since leaving the military, Greg has written a memoir about these experiences and more titled “Death Waits in the Dark” and has a children's book coming out with his daughter called “V is for Veterans.” Show Notes 0:00 - Intro 2:25 - Watching the “Helicopter War” in Vietnam. 8:54 - A “very kind judge” changed Greg's life (this is a story Greg's never told publicly and well worth the listen!). 13:30 - Flight School Class 89-15 and selected guns (Cobras and then AH-64 Apaches). 15:38 - First assigned to 5/17 Cav in Korea flying Cobras and then moved to A Co, 1-101st Spectres. 20:50 - Seeing “little black helicopters” flying around Fort Campbell. 21:16 - Comparison between flying Cobras, Apaches, and Little Birds. 23:09 - The “Standard” of being on target plus or minus 30 seconds with a map, a compass, and a clock. This is an incredibly difficult standard in aviation terms. 24:56 - This section is for the aviation nerds (like myself) comparing speed, maneuverability, and build of different choppers. 27:02 - The selection process for aviation's Tier 1 element: 160th. 36:19 - First combat experience was 2001 in Afghanistan with the first boots on the ground and in contact within four minutes. 40:43 - Greg describes a classic AH-6 Gun engagement and what “target, torque, trim” means and why a grease pencil mark is important. 50:00 - The relationship between 160th pilots and Delta Operators and Rangers. 53:00 - Description of fighting at Haditha Dam in March 2003 supporting 3/75 Rangers. This involved continuous engagements for eight hours going through 11 loads of ammo. 1:05:18 - How to handle the torque of a GAU-19 (three barrel .50 cal gatling gun) on an aircraft. 1:06:40 - Living through a shootdown in broad daylight in Iraq covering Special Operators. 1:25:18 - Dealing with Imposter Syndrome despite being a legend in the community. 1:28:10 - How a long-time elite gun pilot can also have PTSD. 1:33:50 - What did Greg carry into combat for good luck (these are some good ones!). 1:35:28 - After all the gun fights, crashes, PTSD, and time away from home, would you do it all again? 1:36:01 - Greg and his daughter are working on a new book called V for Veteran for kids using military references to teach the alphabet. Also, Death Waits in the Dark will also be available soon on Audible (with Greg's own voice narrating it!).

The Journal had the great pleasure to sit down and chat with one of the great leaders in SOF medicine, recently retired Dr Redman. He uses his extensive experience developing and improving prehospital REBOA care delivery to give us a wide-ranging education on the topic. We review the original of REBOA in the Korean Conflict and its subsequent translation into civilian cardiothoracic practice before recent use in trauma surgery. Our guest then teaches us about recent SOF prehospital REBOA experience and their lessons learned. We then wrap up with an excellent summary of the JTS REBOA CPG and Dr Redman’s personal recommendations going forward. Don’t miss another outstanding interview from one of our SOF medicine leader. Chris came on the podcast to discuss his "old job" as he puts it. Chris doesn't really talk about his service but I kindly persuaded him to come share his story. Chris was very candid with his story, opinions, thoughts, feelings. He shared some very personal stories about getting arrested and sitting in jail but also some of his failures. He loves to fish and hunt. He is avid Muskie fisher. Chris is an incredible asset to the veteran community. He gives back when he can. He volunteers to help others that are able to help themselves. He also a great father.

The motto of 160th SOAR(A) is "Night Stalkers Don't Quit!" or "NSDQ". 160th SOAR(A) medics are the premier provider of in-flight trauma/resuscitative care because of their training pipeline. Ricky Ditzel joined the US Army with plans to join the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment, but something happened that changed those plans. Years later, he applied for the 160th SOAR(A) medical section as a Special Operations Flight Medic (SOFM). He shares the journey to becoming a medic in 160th SOAR(A), his current plans of becoming a neuro-surgeon, and then we dive into concussions and traumatic brain injury. _______________ This episode is brought to you by UnCanna. This week I interview an incredible veteran Dan Foulds. While Dan began his career in the Air Force in various capacities from loading bombs onto B-52 aircraft, to managing the Officer's Club at MacDill AFB, he made the transition to becoming a US Army Flight Warrant Officer. After his first assignment he was asked to join a newly forming unit at Hunter Army Airfield, in Savannah, Georgia, the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment Airborne in 1989. Dan remained with the 160th SOAR until his retirement in 1998, serving as a Flight Lead and Instructor Pilot in the MH-47D aircraft. Dan deployed in January 1991 to Saudi Arabia and flew combat missions during Desert Storm into Iraq. In April 1996, he deployed with 3/160th SOAR to assist in the evacuation of noncombatants from the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia. The operation lasted just 10 days, during which the Night Stalkers assisted in evacuating more than 2,000 noncombatants with no losses to the regiment. After retiring from the Army, Dan flew EMS helicopters as a line pilot, training captain, aviation base manager, and travelling relief pilot for 17 years. These days you can find Dan captaining boats in the Savannah area and teaching others to do the same. ------------------------------------------------ Also available on Apple Podcasts, Anchor.fm, Castbox, Spotify and Google Podcasts. In this episode JD and Uncle Steve speak with Brian Russell Retired Warrant Officer 4 from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. After some time as a Marine Mr. Russell decided he wanted to fly helos and cross decked to the Army. After showing some serious skill he tried out for and was accepted to the 160th. While in the 160th he spent the majority of his time flying pipe hitters everywhere in every theater to do what they do. After 8 combat tours and 22 years of continuous service he was medically retired. Obviously retirement wasn’t keeping him busy enough so between doing smart guy stuff for Defense Contracting Companies he started Horse Power therapy. Horse Power therapy gives vets and all associated the opportunity to work on, ride in and drive super charged machines and attend related events. Google them find out for yourself, get involved and give back.

CW5 Retired, Doug Englen joins Charlie and Katie to share stories about his time with the 160th SOAR, including the mission that got Osama Bin Laden.
As far back as he can remember, Michael Rutledge wanted to be a Naval Aviator. He lacked the grades to get him there, so he enlisted in the Navy, eventually becoming a Navy SEAL. Unable to ignore his desire to fly in the military, after 8 years as a SEAL, Rutledge started the process to transfer to the Army to fly helicopters. All of this happened not long before 9/11. Despite his love for the Teams and its inherent brotherhood, Rutledge felt a greater calling to make it into the aviator ranks and fly in combat. He would be one of the very few aviators that would go from flight school straight into the Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Rutledge shares with us the high's and low's of his journey, and what it meant to be a part of some of the military's most daring and precise missions, on this latest edition of HAZARD GROUND! https://makinganightstalker.com Join Red Velvet Media as we talk to David Burnett about his new book “Making A Nightstalker”David Burnett’s Making A Night Stalker,Rare Insight into The Elite 160th SOAR NIGHTSTALKERS. David Burnett takes readers into a unique world of the 160th Special Operations Aviation regiment. His journey starts in a conventional Army unit where he doesn’t feel fulfilled in his duties and obligations. This lack of responsibility drives David to pursue the dream of becoming an MH-47G Chinook helicopter crew chief in the most secretive and elite aviation unit in the world. David Burnett was born and raised in Parker, Colorado. After a few semesters of college he decided it wasn't for him and he enlisted in the Army in 2008. He was stationed with 563rd ASB as a 15U (Chinook Helicopter repairer). After realizing his job in the regular Army wasn’t as fulfilling as he had hoped, he applied for 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment SOAR. After making it through the unit's five-week selection process he began his journey as a Special Operations crew chief. He went through countless years of training and deployed with the unit five times before deciding he wasn't going to reenlist. He put pen to paper after receiving an honorable discharge from the unit and began writing. He invented and patented a clamp intended to be used on the very aircraft he crewed on, and runs the day to day in his pre-revenue company Tac-Clamp. He finished his Bachelors in Business management after being discharged. In his free time he enjoys golf and snowboarding.
It's not often that we run across someone who goes from being a U.S. Navy SEAL and who then switch branches to the U.S. Army and become a 160th SOAR pilot! Rutledge is the current Commander, 2nd Aviation Detachment, USMA as well as an MX400 instructor and mentor for the West Point Football, Swimming, Parachute Team, and Aviation Club. He enlisted in the U.S Navy in 1990 from Davenport, IA as a Naval Aircrewman and Helicopter Rescue Swimmer. In 1993, Rutledge was selected for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training. After graduation, he was assigned to SEAL Team ONE and an assignment at the Naval Special Warfare Center at Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, CA as an Advanced Training Instructor. He completed three overseas deployments to include several contingency operations and was deployed during Sept 11th, 2001. In addition, he served as an M-60 gunner, explosive breacher, team leader, and air operations department head. Upon return from deployment in 2002, Rutledge was accepted to Army Warrant Officer Candidate School and follow-on training as an Army Aviator. Mike Frazier has one of the most interesting military backgrounds of any of our guests. He served in Iraq in 2003 as part of a Coast Guard tactical law enforcement team, in support of combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following a short stint in the Coast Guard, Frazier enlisted in the Army to become a crew chief. He would eventually earn a billet in the elite and highly specialized 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, more commonly known as the “Night Stalkers.” But, a back injury would bring his military career, and his time with the Night Stalkers, to a screeching halt. Mike loved serving in the 160th. The injury, compounded with the dark experiences of combat would lead Mike down a precarious path where suicide was the only form of relief. Fortunately, after hitting rock bottom, Mike found a reason to live, and just recently began opening up about his experiences.
