Back in the SAA Bunker deep in the Brindabellas, Marcus & Michael declare energy independence (okay, thanks to government subsidies) and ponder the details of the Trump Administration's new Defense budget. $1.5 trillion dollars delivers an all you can eat buffet of spending for everyone involved in the Military Industrial Complex. The traditional big end of town - Lockheed, RTX Raytheon, Northrop and Boeing get cash, & so do tech bro outfits like Anduril & Palantir. Just the US Army's missile budget is now bigger than the total budget of the US State Department - take that you peacenik diplomats. America First is looking like not just having a Department of War, but an entire Government of War. There are some minor problems: 1. given the real world usage rates in Iran, this 43% increase in annual spending won't produce enough expensive missiles & interceptors to fight even a short war with an adversary like China - so, not the strongest deterrent message. And 2. it looks a courageous assumption to think that US defence industry can ramp up at the scale and speed this cash splash desires. The budget describes a bad plan, that fails to adjust to the practical realities revealed in the Iran war - unless the plan is to be able to fight anyone except China or Russia.....
Plus: Trump's budget ignores the deficit, NASA's Artemis program faces delays and rising costs, and a listener asks about libertarian alternatives to Medicare for All.

On Friday's Mark Levin Show, a U.S. F-15 has been downed in a desolate area of Iran. One crew member has been successfully rescued, while search efforts continue for the second. President Trump declined to discuss specifics of the ongoing search and rescue operation and said that the incident would not affect negotiations with Iran. Also, the White House has requested $1.5 trillion for defense in the new budget. This is a great proposal - national defense is the federal government's top responsibility. Later, the Democrats are telling us, repeatedly, that if they win the House, they will impeach the president and conduct a reign of terror against all who work for him, all who have worked for him, and do everything possible to cripple his presidency. We should not roll over and play dead as they burn down the country. Afterward, Mayor Zohran Mamdani released an Easter statement that completely omitted any mention of Jesus Christ, despite Easter specifically celebrating Christ's death and resurrection. This statement was issued intentionally on Good Friday, part of a deliberate pattern by the Muslim mayor of New York City. Finally, Col Allen West calls in to give an update on how the military is conducting their search and rescue mission for the missing F-15 fighter pilot. He also expresses his annoyance at the media Iran war coverage, viewing it as unconscionable criticism during active operations, akin to opposing troops on D-Day. Learn more about your ad choices. Analyzing Japan's New Hawkish Prime Minister and the Defense Budget Goal Lance Gatling Lance Gatling analyzes Japan's new Prime Minister, Takayoshi Sado, the nation's first female leader, focusing on her hawkish stance and ambitious defense goals. Sado has committed to raising Japan's defense budget to five percent of GDP, a significant increase that reflects growing security concerns and regional tensions. However, Gatling notes that achieving this goal presents substantial challenges, as the current massive budget is already fully allocated. This would require either borrowing, reallocation, or difficult trade-offs between existing programs, and there remains serious doubt about whether the military can effectively absorb, train personnel for, and maintain such a dramatic increase.

In this episode of the *Big Ideas for Smaller Government* series, host David Fran sits down with Jeremiah Mosteller, policy director for Americans for Prosperity, to explore the vast and complex Department of Defense (DoD). With a staggering $2 trillion budget and nearly three million military and civilian personnel, the DoD is one of the largest federal agencies. Together, they discuss the department's history, structure, and some surprising examples of wasteful spending, including $5 million spent on ineffective camouflage and $1,300 coffee cups used on Air Force cargo planes. Jeremiah highlights how better coordination and cutting excessive contracting could lead to significant taxpayer savings—up to $260 billion over ten years—without compromising national security. This in-depth conversation sheds light on the challenges and opportunities within the DoD, illustrating why reforming defense spending is crucial for reducing the federal deficit and making government more efficient. Listeners gain valuable insights into how strategic changes, such as reducing contractor reliance and improving procurement, could help save billions while ensuring our military remains well-equipped. Tune in to understand how thoughtful cuts in defense can contribute to a smaller, smarter government.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will increase defense spending to over $1 trillion for the first time in U.S. history. But will it actually improve U.S. national security?
Hosts Ray Powell and Jim Carouso interview Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE), a retired Air Force Brigadier General with 29 years of military service. Rep. Bacon serves on the House Armed Services Committee and brings unique insights from both military leadership and congressional oversight.Congressman Bacon is concerned that America is spending just 2.9% of GDP on defense—the lowest level since 1940, before Pearl Harbor. He argues for increasing defense spending to 4% of GDP, approximately $150 billion more annually, to address critical modernization needs including nuclear triad upgrades, fifth and sixth-generation fighters, attack submarines, and improved military quality of life. The discussion highlights America's innovation deficit, particularly in drone technology and electronic warfare, where Ukrainian forces have outpaced U.S. capabilities. Bacon emphasizes how Ukraine's recent destruction of 41 Russian strategic bombers using $5,000 drones demonstrates the power of cost-effective innovation over expensive legacy systems.Bacon addresses growing tensions within the Republican Party between traditional alliance supporters and isolationist factions, drawing parallels to 1930s isolationism. He warns that current diplomatic approaches risk alienating key allies, citing business challenges with Canada and European partners. The congressman advocates for maintaining America's role as "leader of the free world" while acknowledging the need for burden-sharing.With China potentially spending $700 billion on defense (despite claiming $170 billion), Bacon emphasizes the urgency of military modernization focused on long-range precision weapons, air and missile defense, and drone swarm technology. He stresses that deterring China requires immediate weapons deliveries to Taiwan, noting billions in delayed military aid.Two years of continuing resolutions have hampered military readiness and prevented new program starts. Bacon explains the bipartisan nature of the Armed Services Committee while criticizing broader congressional dysfunction that prioritizes partisan politics over national security.Bacon highlights critical nuclear deterrent gaps, including 50-year-old Minuteman III ICBMs that cannot be extended, aging B-2 bombers with outdated stealth technology, and Ohio-class submarines reaching end-of-life. With Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters located at Offutt Air Force Base in his district, he argues these systems are essential for countering both China and Russia.Despite being a deficit hawk concerned about the $36 trillion national debt, Bacon argues that defense spending increases are necessary while addressing mandatory spending on Social Security and Medicare, which comprises 73% of federal spending. This episode provides essential insights into America's defense readiness challenges, alliance management complexities, and the urgent need for strategic clarity in confronting great power competition in the Indo-Pacific region.
