Welcome to this week's Modern Drummer Podcast featuring Gina Schock of the Go-Go's. Gina and MD's Billy Amendola have a relaxing afternoon in Brooklyn discussing the effect of her first concert at eleven years old igniting her dream of becoming a musician and leading her on a path of success. Gina also discusses her first book, Made in Hollywood: All Access with The Go-Go's. A coffee table book packed with stories and photos collected by the drummer over her 40-year career. “I'm excited to share this with everyone because these photos have just been sitting in drawers and under the beds and closets and all over the place,” says Schock. “It's nice to have them all in one place so that everybody will be able to see them.” Recently the Go-Go's were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by actress Drew Barrymore. “When I was about seven I discovered the Go-Go's. I went out and bought their album Beauty and the Beat. And as the vinyl twirled, my whole world changed.” The Go-Go's were the first all-female band to have a Number One album in the Billboard 200 when Beauty and the Beat hit the top spot in 1982. The quintet — Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine, and Jane Wiedlin also performed during the 2021 ceremony. Let's listen in!

Johnny Goudie is a Cuban-American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumental musician, record producer and podcaster based in Austin, Texas. Through his four-decade career, Johnny's musical experiences span the artistic gauntlet and include being the frontman of many bands including Goudie (Elektra Records), the guitarist/keyboardist/backing vocalist for renowned touring acts like Ian Moore & Bodeans, a songwriter working with the likes of Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey and Kathy Valentine (Go-Go's), a solo artist capable of revealing a previously unseen intimacy, and of course, keyboardist/vocalist for SKYROCKET! In January of 2018, Johnny enlisted the help of his old friend, producer/guitarist, "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb (Slaid Cleaves, Ian McLagan) and recorded four songs for an upcoming e.p. to be released September 13, 2018. In 2011 Johnny took his talents to the world of podcasting and launched “How Did I Get Here?”, an audio segment that takes the form of a casual living room conversation while simultaneously packing the punch of a formal interview. With thousands of subscribers, the show has garnered a worldwide fanbase through Johnny's curiosity and disarming sense of humor. He's hosted renowned guests like Ian McLagan (The Faces, The Rolling Stones), Dwight Twilley, The Bodeans, as well as up and comers like White Denim and Wild Child. The Go-Go’s, the iconic all female L.A. punk band, will release their first new recording in nearly 20 years, “CLUB ZERO,” on July 31st on UMe. The band can be seen working on an early version of the song in their new documentary THE GO-GO’S, directed by Alison Ellwood (Laurel Canyon, History of the Eagles) Propelled by the spirited, melodic punch we’ve come to expect from the Southern Californiaband, as well as a catchy, call-to-action chorus, “CLUB ZERO” will certainly join the ranksamong an esteemed catalog of Go-Go’s classics. The self-produced track was created via email exchanges amongst bandmembers and recordedat Lucky Recording in S.F. with Co-Producer/Mixer/Engineer Travis Kasperbauer and in Los Angeles with Lead Vocal Recording/Producer Gabe Lopez. As the band’s stance has always been fervent when it comes to relevant issues, the anthemic, punk-infused paean arrives just in time for a world in desperate need of a voice of optimism and change.

The Go-Go's rose out of LA's punk scene in the late 70's to the top of the charts (in 1981, their debut, "Beauty and the Beat" became the No. 1 album on the Billboard chart for six weeks, the first by a female band that wrote their own songs and played their own instruments). Meet Charlotte Caffey, guitarist and founding member. She and Bret talk about the Go-Go's new song, a just released documentary about the group, and what's next for the band.
On this week's show, we do our part to keep a legendary NC music venue open, and give it up for a couple of records we dig that turn 10 years old. All this & much, much less!

I can tell what you're thinking: really, What the Riff? The Go-Go's? That's not rock, that's pop! Well we'll agree that their debut album Beauty and the Beat was quite popular, but the group has its roots in the punk movement, not pop music. With Belinda Carlisle on lead vocals, Charlotte Caffey on lead guitar and keyboards, Gina Schock on percussion, Kathy Valentine on bass, and Jane Wiedlin on rhythm guitar, The Go-Go's were the first and (so far) only all female band to hit the top of the charts writing their OWN songs and playing their OWN instruments.Their inspiration comes from punk stalwarts like Iggy Pop and The Sex Pistols, and the band was formed before the members actually knew how to play their instruments. They established a reputation in the L.A. punk scene and were eventually signed by I.R.S. Records. Beauty and the Beat combines Punk sensibilities with the upcoming New Wave sound of the early 80's, and the result was both critically and popularly well received. The Go-Go's would be nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy in 1982, and Beauty and the Beat would spend 6 weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart. So it is OK to rock out to The Go-Go's. But don't worry if you're embarrassed. We won't tell. Our lips are sealed! We Got the BeatThis is the song that started it all for The Go-Go's. Penned by guitarist and keyboardist Charlotte Caffey, it gained popularity as a demo in the UK in 1980. They were invited to tour with the group Madness at that time, and it's distinctive percussion beat is iconic. Our Lips Are Sealed“Pay no mind to what they say. It doesn't matter anyway.” This was the first track on the album and the lead U.S. single. It's pop orientation is also atypical for the group, and The Go-Go's were unenthusiastic about doing the video. The perky, fresh image was very different from their roots. Can't Stop the WorldThis deeper cut sounds a little more new wave than the hits off the album. Kathy Valentine's bass licks are prominent on this track. The lyrics are good advice for today. “Things will be alright. Can't stop the world.”AutomaticThis minor key track has a mysterious vibe to it. This song is played in the background on a documentary on The Go-Go's discussing the darker side of the group. There are some cool pauses in the middle of this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The William Tell Overture (Main Theme from "The Legend of the Lone Ranger")One of the biggest box office failures hit the cinemas this month, and both the star and director of the movie would not respectively act and direct again. STAFF PICKS:Swords & Tequilla by RiotWayne's staff pick cranks out the rock. Heavy Metal band Riot is out of New York City, and unfortunately didn't catch the fame that later hair bands would gain. This is from their album Fire Down Under. The lead singer was killed in Atlanta when shot during an attempted carjacking. Ain't Even Done with the Night by John CougarBrian brings us an early hit from the album “Nothin' Matters, and What If It Did” by John Cougar. Cougar - soon to revert back to John Mellencamp - was an observational writer, and so his songs are not autobiographical. “It's time to go home, and I ain't even done with the night.”Find Your Way Back by Jefferson StarshipBruce's staff pick is off Modern Times, the sixth album by Jefferson Starship, and the second with Mickey Thomas on lead vocals. This song is about regret at leaving a relationship. The chorus comes back to the theme, “find your way back to her heart.”Somebody's Knockin' by Terri GibbsRob finishes us off with a crossover country song from from talented and blind Georgia native Terri Gibbs. This song hit number 13 on the pop charts. “Lord it's the devil, would you look at him? I've heard about him, but I never dreamed he'd have blue eyes and blue jeans.” INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Primera Invasion by SantanaThis instrumental track showcases the talents of Carlos Santana, who had an album on the charts at the time.

Tosh & Kimley discuss "Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk" by John Doe with Tom DeSavia and friends. Having both experienced the L.A. Punk scene firsthand, we found this to be a nostalgic and at times underwhelming look back at a scene that defied definition with bands ranging from the pure pop of the Go-Go’s to the hardcore thrashing of Black Flag. So what is L.A. Punk? We discuss both the Hollywood and Latin influences unique to the L.A. scene as well as the strong graphic visuals and DIY aesthetic that permeated all aspects of the scene. Contributors to the book include Exene Cervenka of X, Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go’s, Mike Watt of the Minutemen, and Henry Rollins to name just a few. It's summertime and that means relaxing with the things you love and for that means music. Loud angry punk music to be specific. What can I tell you, I am who I am. Anyway, I'm a big fan of west coast punk, specifically the bands of the late 70's early 80's west coast punk scene. And a year ago found this amazing book by John Doe, of X, one of my favorite bands, and Tom DeSavia, a music A&R exec. The book was called Under The Big Black Sun and it was an oral history of the first three or four years of the West Coast punk scene. I tore that book, them bought and listened to the audio version, just loved it. Lo and behold, John and Tom have continued the story with Under The Big Black Sun, taking us through the 80's heyday of the scene. The book is fascinating and full of stuff that I did not know. Did you know that the Go-Go's started out as a punk band, and that they were, in fact, notoriously some of the hardest partiers in the scene? It's true. Anyway, I was performing at a club here in LA that I love called Largo and saw that John and Tom were going to be having a book event with some of the other authors from the book. Skateboard pro Tony Hawk, Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go's, Pleasant Gehman from the Screaming Sirens, and I asked Flanagan, who runs Largo, if the event was sold out. He asked me if I'd like to moderate it. I tried my best to act cool, and I did and we recorded it and here it's here. Now, one of the kids who grew up in the San Fernando valley in the early 80's who listened to that music and went onto form his own band was Rob Zabrecky. Rob became the front man of Possum Dixon in the mid '90s and, well, to know about his life, by all forms of rationale and logic, eh should be dead. But he ain't! And to see where he has ended up in life… He's here as well today to talk about his new book, Strange Cures. Anyway, this is a very special episode because all of these people are talented creative people who I look up to an admire and through this podcast have become friends and that's really the best thing there is. https://DanaGould.com

On today's episode I talk to Anna Waronker. Anna is a singer/songwriter, composer, and producer originally from Los Angeles. After graduating from high school, Anna formed the band that would eventually become That Dog. While the band was only active for six years, they released three great albums on DGC Records (That Dog, Totally Crushed Out and Retreat from The Sun) and toured with everyone from Beck to Weezer to Blur. The band reunited in 2011 and recorded a new album to be released in the future. As a solo artist, Anna has released two albums, Anna and California Fade, and scores music for film and TV, which includes shows like Clueless, Dawson's Creek, Grey's Anatomy and Castle. Anna also now works in theater. Her last production was Lovelace: A Rock Musical, a collaboration with her sister-in-law Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go's.
